Mail Is Zipping On Its Own

I am running Mail 4.3 under System 10.6.4. I've noticed that if I select a folder as an attachment, Mail is automatically zipping the folder when it sends it. If I attach a single file this does not happen. It also does not happen if I attach several files by selecting them individually. Just to a folder. Is there a setting somewhere in Mail that controls this behavior? The reason I ask is that some recipents cannot handle a zipped file or folder.
Thanks,
Bob

Most ISP will block sizes more than 10 MB (25 in Google email) . Sending large files need something like either DropBox, CloudApp or PogoPlug.

• E-mail setup launching of its own accord

I'm using a Nokia X6 and ever since Orange merged with T-Mobile, the E-mail setup wizard has been launching of its own accord asking me to allow the application to use network to send or recieve data, I hit No and it goes away, but the wizard will keep launching.
It only seems to launch when the phone is locked and if I go in and out of signal.
Some help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Any help? It's quite a pain. I've tried restarting, but that hasn't fixed it.

• Mail shuts down on its own

Seems like mail is shutting down on its own several times a day.  Any one have this problem

Other people have had the same problem. See this thread:
https://discussions.apple.com/message/17337738#17337738
Be sure to quit Mail before moving or deleting any Mail-related Library files!
I'd also advise having a recent backup before moving/deleting any Library files.
As you may know, your user Library is hidden. To see it: in the Finder, hold down the Option key and, under the Go menu, choose Library.
Note that the advice in that thread is from OS X 10.5. Things are in different places now, plus you probably have more than one file called Envelope Index (with different suffixes).
Your Envelope Indexes are now in YourUserLibrary/Mail/V2/MailData
Mail's caches are now in YourUserLibrary/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Caches
You might want to try either the Envelope Indexes or caches first, not both at the same time, in case the problem is only with one.
If you do as advised in that thread, Mail will re-create your Envelope Indexes and/or caches (you'll have to "import" all your messages, which is just Envelope Index re-creating its index). If all works well after that, you can then remove the old caches and/or Envelope Indexes.
Please let me know....

• Mail service quits on its own

Hello,
The mail service on my server is turning itself off automatically. I can turn it back on and for a few moments it will run, but them it shuts-off. The System log is awash with messages relating to postfix and dovecot, but I can't understand what they mean. Is there something, specific, I should be looking for in the logs? I know the logs are a key component in troublshooting, but I am just unsure what to look for. Also, clients cannot make IMAP connections to the server, SMTP is working fine.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

There is a whole bunch of these messages. The Mail server is currently off at the time these messages are logged.

• WHY does my cursor decide on its own to go sit somewhere OTHER than where I just got finished typing? I see it in Yahoo mail, and Facebook. It STINKS.

I type a lot of stuff, but I'm a one-fingered typist. I very often look up to proof-read what I just entered on my laptop screen, and I see it's been jumbled, with words cut-up and cut-off, but the word and the sentence have been inserted (as if cut-and-pasted) u a discussion board I like to visit and contribute to. Hi,
You can consider the Reset Firefox feature via Help (Alt + H) > Troubleshooting Information. If it is okay, you can then install the Mozilla Archive Format add-on.
If you have security software installed you can try to delete all existing entries for Firefox and its sub processes in the different configuration modules and try to fully trust/allow Firefox afresh. Even after network access is completed, Firefox would still need unlimited access to its disk cache/memory as well as its files. Please see this.

Hello,
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)
* On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
* Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshooting extensions and themes article for that.
To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.
Thank you.

• My Macbook Pro started freezing all the time & going to sleep on its own for no reason

I've been having trouble for a few weeks with my computer freezing way too often for seemingly no reason - I'm using it exactly the same way I always have with no problems, and even actively trying to have less applications open (which seems to have no effect). I can't always load simple webpages without it freezing and giving me the color wheel and it's just MUCH slower in general. It is seriously making it difficult to use my computer for work  or for fun...
It has also started going to sleep on its own - the screen will just go black (or sometimes BLUE) and the keyboard lights turn off, and the only way to get it to wake back up is to close the computer, wait, open it again and click or press a key. It doesn't respond to any keys/clicks until it has been closed and reopened.
It seems to overheat really easily lately as well - but it does not always overheat when it freezes.
SMC reset did not seem to have an effect. Activity Monitor doesn't show anything crazy, everything is pretty much 0% except Firefox around 7-12% as I'm typing this. 246 GB available on my hard drive so that doesn't seem to be the problem either. Right after restarting my computer it seems better but the problems quickly resurface...
I googled for help before posting this and someone had suggested running the command
syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'Channel t|GPU D|I/O|find tok|n Cause: -' | tail | open -ef
in Terminal, which they said "Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty." But mine gave this:

Eric - I dont understand how I'd use caffeinate.  I am not running any code or particular script.  My system goes to sleep if surfing the web, or running Word or Excel, etc.
Or..  Are you saying I should go through and type 'caffeinate X' for all of my applications?

• IPhone deletes MobileMe email on its own

I first noticed the problem last week. I open up Mail on my iPhone, it checks Mobile Me for new messages, they start to download and I saw a number of emails fleetingly appear before my eyes and immediately thereafter vanish without a trace. Today it had to be the most important email I was waiting for didn't it? And it was. I saw it briefly, again for all of a second, and then it was gone forever.
No trace of the emails to be found in Trash or Junk. Gone.
I found another, closed thread relating to Yahoo Mail and people who encountered this error. But this was Apple's Mobile Me service. I've even checked my mail via me.com, no luck. It's like the message never existed but I know it did.
Ideas? Help? And why did it bypass the trash for goodness' sake? If it had dumped it there because of some bug I could have rescued it. But to wipe it totally? Man, that's one nasty bug.

No. I was accessing my me.com email nowhere else at the times this happened, as it has happened again since my original post above. I have switched off email on my iPhone until this is resolved, I can't afford to have emails going like that.
And bear in mind, whether you access elsewhere or not is somewhat irrelevant when talking about MobileMe accounts as they are supposed to keep in sync, meaning if I download an email to my MB Pro it will appear in my inbox on iPhone or iMac as well. Unless of course you move or delete the email, which I didn't.
Before switching off email on my iPhone as an emergency response I tried changing the settings to confirm deletions before going ahead. That was completely ignored by the iPhone, which went ahead and deleted another email all on its own thereafter.
I have never had the problems with emails other have had before now. Could an installed third-party app impact on the Mail app in any way at all? I have installed a few apps along the way but was thinking, could something installed in the past fortnight, say, be a cause?

• Firefox is starting up on its own. I don't want it to because sometimes I don't need it, and when I go to shut down, computer won't let me because Firefox is running and I didn't know it. What to do?

I used to be in control of whether or not Firefox would load for any particular session on my computer. Now, probably after some update I got in the recent past, Firefox has a mind of its own. It opens every time I turn on my computer. There are times I don't want to use any browser, including Firefox. For example, sometimes I just want to look at my mail. Don't have time for anything else, but my computer won't let me shut it down. Why? Firefox sneaked in. So I have to find it and close it before I can shut down the computer.
HELP!!! How can I stop Firefox from automatically loading?
Thanks.

Welcome to Apple Support Communities
First, when you are going to turn off or restart your Mac, you will see a box called "Reopen windows when logging back in" in the shutdown or restart window. Untick this box and see if the App Store opens automatically in the next startup.
If it starts, open System Preferences > Users and Groups > Login Items, and see if the App Store shows up. If so, remove it from this list

• My Mac got hacked. I was working on a word document when the computer suddenly started typing meaningful sentences on its own that describes how the hacker is skillful. At the that time I was on a password protected wifi and file sharing was off.

This is the first time I get hacked this bad. I was working on a microsoft word document when the computer suddenly started typing meaningful sentences on its own that describes how skillfull the hacker is. At the that time I was on a friends wifi network that is password protected (not sure about the encyrption), the Os X Firewall was on. I was using the admin profile, however, file sharing was off. I'm very careful not to install any suspecious 3rd party software.
So far I have verified permissions and fixed some errors there, and changed passwords.
Do I have to erase/format my computer and reinstall the Os? If so is it adequte to use the internet recovery tool or will it use old and possibly infected EFI/Root files?
Would appreciate the advice of all the Mac experts out there. Thanks

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Step 1
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting. A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
Step 2
Repeat with this line:
{ sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix\.cron)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; echo; sudo launchctl getenv DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES; echo; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; echo; sudo crontab -l; } 2> /dev/null | open -ef
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
Step 3
{ launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'; echo; launchctl getenv DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES; echo; crontab -l 2> /dev/null; } | open -ef
Step 4
ls -A /e*/{cr,la,mach}* {,/}Lib*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts .la* 2> /dev/null | open -ef
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of login items' | open -ef
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
You can then quit Terminal.

• "Terminal" opens on its own after starting my MBP

First of all, I'd like to apologize for my english...
I have a problem since 2 weeks ago. Everytime I start my mac, a Terminal's window opens on its own, and the next sequence of commands starts to execute in themselves:
Last login: Mon Jun 8 00:18:46 on console
/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/A/Commands/java ; exit;
MBP:~ miguelgonzalezherranz$ /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/A/Commands/java ; exit;
Usage: java [-options] class [args...]
(to execute a class)
or java [-options] -jar jarfile [args...]
(to execute a jar file)
where options include:
-d32 use a 32-bit data model if available
-d64 use a 64-bit data model if available (implies -server, only for x86_64)
-client to select the "client" VM
-server to select the "server" VM
-jvm is a synonym for the "client" VM [deprecated]
-hotspot is a synonym for the "client" VM [deprecated]
The default VM is client.
-cp <class search path of directories and zip/jar files>
-classpath <class search path of directories and zip/jar files>
A : separated list of directories, JAR archives,
and ZIP archives to search for class files.
-D<name>=<value>
set a system property
-verbose[:class|gc|jni]
enable verbose output
-version print product version and exit
-version:<value>
require the specified version to run
-showversion print product version and continue
-jre-restrict-search | -jre-no-restrict-search
include/exclude user private JREs in the version search
-? -help print this help message
-X print help on non-standard options

I've no idea of the cause of this problem, but i'm really scared about the possibility of being a virus, so I'd be very grateful if you give a hand with it.
Thank you very much

Hello MIke:
Welcome to Apple discussions.
No need to apologize. My English, at times, is not very good and it is my native tongue!
First, there are NO viruses that affect a Mac running OS X - none.
Open system preferences>accounts>log in items. See if "terminal" appears there (probably not).
I suspect this article will help yoiu solve the problem:

• Having Aperture library on its own drive?

I'm wondering if it would be advantageous to move the Aperture library to its own drive. I currently have 2 different internal RAID 0 volumes. One of them is comprised of two WD Raptor drives and is my boot drive and contains my applications and Aperture library. The other drive contains (some of) the referenced files and my data. Given that I am a heavy Aperture user (350,000 referenced images in a 150gb library) I'm wondering if I wouldn't be better off having the library be the only thing on the Raptors. I'm guessing that with a library this big, disk fragmentation could be a major bottleneck, plus I would also gain some speed advantages by having my volume only be 50% full (instead of 75%).
Do you think I am making this overcomplicated for a small speed advantage, or I might I see significant gains?
thanks,
Dave

Hi both,
Firstly i typo'ed the RAID number (sorry but sounds like you realized).
Subjective / empirical results from my own tests with my needs in mind:
I've noticed small performance improvements moving from FW400 to eSATA externals but frankly with 8Mpix/24Mb files sizes for the RAW's it's not been a significant contribution to decision criteria for me. Moving from USB 2 to FW400 was significant, esp. for launching Aperture, importing and exporting. During editing/adjustments, FW400 was quite acceptable.
As for RAM, moving from 2.5Gb to 4.5Gb gained me some when I was also running PS CS3 and other apps. (Mail, Safari, MS Office 2004/Rosetta etc.). At 4.5Gb, I rarely run into much virtual memory paging. My suggestion is to launch Activity Monitor and just see how you are using RAM for your workload. More RAM will achieve nothing at all if no paging to disk is taking place.
Aperture is reasonably multi-threaded but import to some extent and export primarily are the best examples of where the extra cores add value. Once into image manipulation, my 4-cores tick along at idle for the most part and sadly I Activity Monitor doesn't show GPU performance. Maybe the X1900 G5 card is maxed out (likely) but I don't know. I did a test with 2 x graphics cards under Aperture v1.1 but it showed no improvement whatsoever. Unknown whether Aperture v2.x will multi-thread gpu calls but I think not .... possibly core image limitation in Leopard.

• Where can I get Net 8 on its own for new remote installation?

I require to install Net 8 on a remote SQL Server/Windows 2000 Server and as the connection is very delicate I need to just copy the installation file for Net 8 across.
I have it in our 9i pack and on the Oracle Forms and reports CD but how do I get it on its own? Is in on a resource pack?

I haven't seen a small (standard) install since 7.3.x. Do you need 8.0.x or 8.1.x?
I guess you could try in your PC first to customize a stage area to cut down on some subdirs/files. Maybe it's easier to just send the CD by mail?
At a minimum OCI, Net and RSF files are required, maybe ~50MB (or less?). But there's no real minimal standard Client install. (Maybe 10g Instant Client will change that!)

• I have an iPad 2 running iOS 8. The email app is not working. The screen shows empty email box, then closes on its own. I have tried closing the app, turning ipad on and off and reset to no avail. Any other ideas? Thanks.

I Have an iPad 2 running iOS 8. When I open email, the email isn't there. I have tried closing the app, turning off the ipad and resetting the iPad. None of that helps. Any ideas? Thanks.

So the app is opening to a white screen then closing on its own?  If you have deleted your email accounts & the app is still crashing then I would try resetting all settings (without deleting data).
Did you reboot the iPad after removing the email accounts?  If not, try that first holding the home & sleep/wake buttons simultaneously until the apple logo appears, then release & once booted back up, try opening the mail app again.
The problem may have started because one of your email messages might have been corrupt or had a corrupt attachment.  If you can access it from a computer, sign into your email & see if there are any that can't be opened or produce errors opening.  If so, delete the offending emails then try adding the account back to the iPad.
