Mail keeps asking me for password...never done it in the 3 years previous

Hey All..
I am having a little trouble with my Mail. I have 2 accounts on my MBP. One is my .Mac mail and the other is my PO3 mail. For the past year or so everything has been fine (and the previous 2 years on my PB) But, yesterday I was messing around using "Main Menu" application cleaning up my computer.
I have never used it before so I was just trying to make some space by removing things. Anyway, did the following things:
* Clean User Cache
* Clean System Cache
* Empty Browser Cahe
* Clean Font Cache
* Remove Corrupt Preferences
* Clean All Logs
* Remove Temporary Files
I did all of these and just wondered if any of this would have had an affect on my Mail. I also have MSN Messenger on my laptop and iChat and when I open them I am also now prompted for my password.
I went in to the mail preferences and sure enough on both accounts the password field is blank. So I filled them in the saved them. But on reopening the preferences the passwords are gone again. Please help as it's very frustrating. I started all this after a one-2-one training session in the Apple Store yesterday. Would love some help if anyone can spare the time. I'm not sure what I did but would love to undo it. Is there anyway I can go back?
Many thanks..
~RICKY

This looks like your keychain got corrupted somehow. Try usig the Keychain First Aid in Keychain Access.app

  • Mail keep asking me for passwords.  Like every 5 minutes

    I recently, a couple of months at least, have had mail demand passwords when retrieving email. I go to preferences and put in passwords and save. 5 minutes later, it asks me for passwords again. I threw out the plist preference file and recreated all accounts inputing all passwords. Ten minutes later, it asks me for passwords, again. This is getting frustrating. I am using OS X 10.4.11 and mail 2.1.3 (753.1). I have rebuilt the directory (disk warrior), repaired permissions and fsck'ed several times. I have rebuilt the keychains and am now out of things to do. Any Help?

    When you "rebuilt the keychain," did that entail selecting "keychain first aid" under the menubar in Keychain Access,or did that entail finding any and all entries related to the offending mail accounts in your keychain and deleting them outright? If you've only done one of these things, I'd try doing the other.
    BTW, are you getting your mail after each manual entry of your password, or are you unable to retrieve your mail altogether? If you are not able to retrieve your mail, then I would wonder if your password, back at the server, somehow got changed?

  • At setup wizard keeps asking me for password.....

    At the setup wizard it keeps asking me for password. i have my internet connect to the router and iam able to get online from my comp. My issue is the password window i put my on password and it goes to checking computer settings and comes back to password and  i retype my password and samething.
    Please help Thanks

    Yep, I had the same thing happening. Save settings at a certain spot, and it asks for a login/pass. The solution for me was to turn off my Norton Security entirely for a few minutes to change router settings. Now the Mac laptop and Nintendo DS all connect wireless.

  • Mail keeps asking me for my Verizon POP password!

    Hello,
    The Mac Mail program keeps asking me for my Verizon POP outgoing password. It is so annoying because I have the password stored in the program's preferences for my Verizon.net account, and I know it is stored in the Keychain utility. I have never had this problem on my old mac which ran Mac OS 10.3.9, but I seem to have this problem several times EVERYDAY. I have my outgoing mail server as outgoing.verizon.net. I called Apple tech support about this, and they had me change my authentication settings from Authenticated POP (APOP) to Password. However, after saving that setting, the stupid program reverts back to APOP!!
    What can I do so that Mac Mail will stop acting like it is suffering from alzhiemer's, and remember my password?

    I suggest running Keychain First Aid on your login Keychain via Keychain Access.
    The Authenticated POP (APOP) is for the incoming mail server, not for the outgoing or SMTP server.

  • Outlook 2011 for Mac keeps asking me for password

    I had been using Windows Live Mail (pop 3) for years until last week; rarely, if ever had any problems downloading my mail.
    I just bought a Mac computer and am using Outlook 2011 for Mac; my operating system is Maverick (if that means anything to anyone).
    The BT tech guys suggested I set up my mail accounts as IMAP so that all mail read on the server syncs etc. with my Outlook. It all sounded great. However, ever since I installed Outlook for Mail it asks me for my password numerous times during the day (for each of my 5 email accounts)....it usually does this when the computer has been in sleep mode, i.e., when Outlook tries to download mail from the server.
    Something else to mention is that whilst the BT tech guys set up my IMAP accounts with:
    Incoming Port - 993 (requires SSL)
    Outgoing Port - 465 (requires SSL/TLS)
    The BT Mail department (today) told me to revert back to 110 (outgoing)  and 25 (incoming) and to call the incoming and outgoing mail.btinternet.com instead of the smtp.........(I forget the rest of it now) that the tech guys set it up as.
    I've since reverted the incoming and outgoing to mail.btinternet.com but haven't changed the numbers to 110 and 25 because the BT Mail guy said "if you are able to send/receive using the 993 and 465...just leave them. And I *am* able to send/receive. The problem is more the password prompt and the message "server not recognised" or whatever it says....I can't recall the exact words.
    I phoned Apple and they of course say it is an Outlook problem; not an Apple one, though they did help me delete the mail settings in their keychain thingie so that I could put in my passwords again (all passwords are correct by the way).
    Apple did ask, however if my internet service provider are happy for me to have mail set up as IMAP; she epxlained  that it really isn'y *my* choice; it's the server people's choice.
    My questions are therefore: 1) who/what is my server? Is it BT? My email addresses are all btinternet.com and I'm also using BT Broadband for both home and my business/office.
    I just don't understand why Outlook keeps prompting me for password so my second question is 2) does anyone know why I am being prompted for my password as often as I am? Does this have to do with IMAP settings? with Outlook? or with my Server? or possibly all of the above? and how does one identify the real issue?
    Many thanks!

    Hi Steve,
    Thanks for this-yes, eventually, I do send/receive fine, once I've poppedd my passwords in.
    I think you are right in that BT seem to be having unique server/login issues...at least this is what I've read elsewhere too.
    Iroonically, this AM I opened my new Mac and have *not* been asked for passwords so perhaps the changes I made in the settings yesterday (keychain reset in Mac) and also changing it from smtp.....to mail.btinternet.com solved the issue...who knows? All I know is this last week I've nearly lost the will to live on more than one occasion, from the transition from PC Windows Live Mail to Outlook for Mac.

  • HT4864 problems with iCloud mail server on the mail, but it does not fix it when I put the password in, keeps asking me for password. When I go into iCloud to access it from safari, it accesses the icloud fine with my password. I have reset all the settin

    I am running os x 10.7.5, on a macbk, I have been using all the apps fine and not changed anything or run any software updates, suddenly my mail dows not think it can connect with the outgoing server for icloud and requests my password, which I give, but it repeatedly asks again and again. I have tried re-setting all the mail for icloud up again, and it thinks its ok, except the box keeps flagging up can't access outgoing server. I have checked it all a number of times, and I can access the icloud stuff including mail from http when I log in there. Anyone know why my mac will not accept my icloud password? suddenly I cannot get any icloud mail in or out, but I changed nothing. Why does it do this and why can't i fix it?

    No carrier "automatically" unlocks at end of contract - many won't do it at all, even if requested.  I don't know what your carrier's policy is since you didn't say what country you're in.
    However, if I understand you correctly, you didn't change carriers so it doesn't matter if it was unlocked or not. Try the following steps, as needed:
    1. Reset phone - press both home and sleep/wake buttons for at least 19 seconds until the Apple logo appears
    2. Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings
    3. Restore phone in iTunes using a backup
    4. Replace SIM card (don't care what Telstra says)
    5. Restore phone in iTunes as new, without using a backup
    6. Take phone to Apple.

  • Apple Mail keeps asking me for my password ... over and over

    Hi,
    I am having an issue that is driving me crazy on my macbook.
    I have set up my mail password without issues and was accessing this until a month ago on a regular basis. Now, when I access it, it asks me for my password every 30 seconds - I have tried entering it, validating it, changing it, deleting past the message, resetting the entire account from the preferences ( including deleting the account and re-adding it ) but nothing seems to work.
    Does anyone have any what I need to do to get this to work? I'm wondering if I need to start deleting keychains but surely the system should use the latest version and I should not need to. This is driving me crazy - all I want to do is write a mail and I spend 30 mins tryingt to get past this message.
    Thanks for your help,
    Matthew

    go to Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access
    on the left, for Keychains, select login
    for Category, select Passwords
    use the search box to search for all keychain entries related to the passwords in question
    delete those entries
    in the Keychain Access menu, scroll down to Keychain First Aid
    enter your password, select repair, and start
    I don't know if a restart is needed at this point but it wouldn't hurt.
    you will have to enter your passwords again but this time they should stick.

  • Keeps asking me for password over and over and over!!!

    This is so annoying, I went to download new music onto my laptop which I had bought through my I pad and phone but after a little while it kept asking for my username and password, so I put it in about 5 times then it carried on ok for about 5 mins then again it asked so I must have typed it in 6 times before I got fed up and it wouldn't let me so anything else I couldn't minimise it or cancel it it just pops straight back up over and over again. In the end all I could do was uninstall the whole thing. Has anyone else had this?
    I have found lots of post regarding issues on other apple devices but can't see one for a windows laptop I run the Internet on google chrome and I deleted all the cookies still didn't help.
    I am yet to reinstall iTunes as I got too stressed out with the whole thing. And wants to check if I need to do some magic trick before I try and reinstall it.

  • TS1389 My I tune a/c wont let me. It keep asking me for security question .an I give the request.this is from my ipad

    Can you help me log in my I tune store purchases .it keep asking security question

    If it's saying that your answer is wrong, then from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5665 :
    If you have three security questions and a rescue email address, sign in to My Apple ID and select the “Password and Security” tab to send an email to your rescue email address to reset your security questions and answers.
    If you have one security question and you know your Apple ID password, sign in to My Apple ID and select the “Password and Security” tab to reset your security question.
    If you have one security question, but don't remember your Apple ID password, contact Apple Support for assistance. Learn more about creating a temporary support PIN to help Apple confirm your identity when you contact Apple Support.
    If you can’t reset them via the above instructions (you won't be able to add a rescue email address until you can answer your questions) then you will need to contact iTunes Support / Apple in your country to get the questions reset (these are user-to-user forums).
    Contacting Apple about account security : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5699
    When they've been reset (and if you don't already have a rescue email address) you can then use the steps half-way down this page to add a rescue email address for potential future use : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5312

  • HT4009 Hi I am having trouble buying something that is in the app it keeps asking me for 2 sets of password and it keeps telling me it's wrong

    Hi I am having trouble with purchasing an app that is in the app with the credit I have , it keeps asking me for passwords and I keep getting them wrong my new email is ***@Hotmail.com so I can not see the password  .
    <Email Edited by Host>

    We are fellow users here on these user-to-user forums, you're not talking to iTunes Support nor Apple - I've asked the hosts to remove your email address from your post (it's not a good idea to post personal info on any public forum).
    Do you mean that you are being asked for your answers to your security questions ? If you do then if you have a rescue email address (which is not the same thing as an alternate email address) on your account then the steps half-way down this page will give you a reset link on your account : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5312
    If you don't have a rescue email address (you won't be able to add one until you can answer your questions) then you will need to contact Support in your country to get the questions reset.
    Contacting Apple about account security : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5699
    When they've been reset (and if you don't already have a rescue email address) you can then use the steps half-way down the HT5312 link above to add a rescue email address for potential future use

  • Emailing a photo, asked for my password(never done that before.  I put in my computer password, wouldn't take it.  Now just keeps coming up with wrong password, cancel or OK, but won't let me enter another password, so can't email a photo?

    I tried to email a photo yesterday (on gmail).  It asked for a password (never done that before), and I put in my computer password, and it rejected it.  Came up with OK or Cancel.  OK, box went away.  Cancel, it said do you really want to delete this email.  It would not come up with another box.  I think I was supposed to put in my gmail password probably.  I can still use regular email, but can't send a photo, the same thing keeps happening.  I even turned off my computer thinking that might reset it.  I cannot figure out where this password thing came up.  I checked the preferences, nothing there except requiring password for other people to see my photos, which is not checked.  I am stumped.

    Actually, no it doesn't. You can email a photo with Gamil via any Mail client and/or web browser.
    iPhoto Menu ->
    Preferences ->
    Accounts ->
    Delete and recreate your email settings.
    Alternatively, use Apple's Mail for the job. It has Templates too - and more of them.

  • Mail keeps asking for password but won't go online

    I am having multiple problems with passwords on my MB Pro -- FYI running 10.9.   Just fixed a problem with being unable to get into my admin account because I didn't know the password; got that fixed then had problems with keychains - still having.  Keeps asking if I want to go back to default keychain (don't get the keychain thing as it is).  Now both emails are offline and Mail keeps asking me to enter passwords but then it won't go online.  could use some advice or links to fixes

    Back up all data.
    This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
    Step 1
    If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
    Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
    Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
    The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
    Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
    Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
    from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
    In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
    Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
    Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
    Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
    Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
    Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
