Mail keeps deleting the password for iCloud?

Using mail on an iMac, mail will not keep the iCloud password and deletes it after it has been saved. It also keeps taking the accounts offline when I am trying to send e-mail frustrating! Why not just log onto the accounts as outlined in the preferences.

Thanks for the reply but it seems that something else is also going on.
When this little window appears asking for my password I am given the option to "cancel" but nothing happens if I click that box. I'm reallly given only two options: typing my password into that box or cancelling the MAIL program, shutting down my internet connection and then re-opening MAIL. If I do neither of these I'm frozen.
If I restart the program I find two things. All accounts are off-line and my password has disappeared from Preferences?Account Information. If I re-type my password and click all accounts back on-line I'm okay.
But what bothers me most is the removal of my password from Preferences. How could some failure to connect to the server be responsible for this? Couldn't the problem somehow be in the MAIL program? Maybe this problem is triggered by a failed connecion to the server, but how could anything like that affect settings in my program? If something happening out there in server-land could erase my password I almost feel like I'm being hacked.

if go to Preferences/Account Info I see that my password has been removed. I have to re-enter it there and then instruct accountsto go back on-line(I have two accounts active adn it will always be only the password that had been challenged that is gone; the one for the other account is still there.)
So, difficulty connecting to the server or not, ow could that effectively change settings in my program - that is, the password I have set in my Preferences. Whatever is happening is somehow corrupting the MAIL program.

I have an iMac, and have a Verizon DSL account (3 email addresses). Recently, my Mac Mail keeps requesting the passwords on my accounts every few minutes, and will not allow me to send messages using Mac Mail (the message says that the outgoing server was rejected. I cannot edit the outgoing server, and the keychain will not save my passwords (the ports are valid). How can I change the outgoing server to send emails, and how can I avoid having Mail request my passwords every 2 minutes? Verizon, as usual, will not provide support to iMacs.

Is there an email saved in your drafts or outbox folder?  I suspect that Mail is continually trying to send it, and each time Google is rejecting the email message.
You can open the message and then delete it from your Outbox folder.  Then try removing all @gmail email addresses from it and seeing whether you can send to the other folks.  I suspect that will work.
With email, if an SMTP server *can* verify email addresses, sometimes it will and it will refuse to send messages.  If a message has to be relayed across servers, no verification is done, and you'll get a bounce if an email address is bad.

Apple are currently trying to get less secure passwords updated. They require that your account passwords are at least eight characters long and contain both alpha and numeric characters and at least one upper case alpha character.
You might try changing your account password to match these requirements.

  • HT5312 I cannot remember the password for iCloud that goes with an old email address that I used to set it up.  How do I delete the iCloud account and start over?

I am stuck in a loop and want to delete the iCloud account I set up and start over.  How?

If you acquired content with the old Apple ID, you also forfeit the content. Content is forever associated with the Apple ID that bought it. Apple does not transfer content from one ID to another nor does Apple merge IDs. It would be best to reacquire use of the ID than to abandon it if you have content because that is the only ID that can redownload the content or update it. Call Apple Care for your country and ask for the Account Security Team, then request help resetting the password for the account.
Otherwise, if none of that matters, just abandon the ID and everything associated with it, delete everything from your devices and libraries. Then create a new Apple ID and start over.

  • Mail doesn't save password for iCloud IMAP account (works fine with other email providers)

Mavericks Mail doesn't save the password for my iCloud IMAP account no matter how many times I enter it into Preferences or enter it when prompted.  Doesn't seem to be saving in Keychain or wherever it should be saved.  Passwords for all other email providers that I use are saved.  Any suggestions on how to fix this?  Thanks!!!!!

Great, thanks A LOT! Best answer on that issue and so simple!!!! Now it works perfectly fine

  • HT204053 Since upgrade to the latest version of the iPad system, my iPad does not recognise the password for iCloud and won't let me access it to change it

Since the last upgrade on the iPad system, I have not been able to log in with my password to iCloud.  I have changed my Apple ID and password to see if this would help but no it hasn't made any difference and every time I go into my emails the log in screen keeps popping up with the old username and the sign in it won't recognise.  Please could someone tell me in easy steps how to alter this?

Hi Susie. If you don't remember the password to the apple id with which you have logged into icloud then you need to reset the password at iforgot.apple.com. Put in that old apple id and if you have access to that email you can have a link sent to it to reset your password. If you don't have access to it then you can choose to answer security questions. If you can't answer the security questions properly then you need to go to expresslane.apple.com and tollow the prompts for apple id issues/can't answer security questions and if you put in your contact information Apple will call you immediately and you can talk to someone who can help you reset that password.

  • Keep changing my password for iCloud to verify my account?

Why do I have to keep changing my iCloud password for my iPhone to verify my account? That iMac doesn't have any trouble but my iPhone keeps losing the function of anything iCloud related. Changing the password seems to fix this but why do I have to keep doing it?
    Thanks for any help.

Make sure you are checking the email address you used to set up your iCloud account.  Also make sure you check the spam/junk folder as well as the inbox.  If it isn't there, go to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage your Apple ID, sign in, click on Name, ID and Email addresses on the left, then to the right click Resend under your Primary Email Address to resend the verification email.

  • My old apple ID no longer exists and my phone needs it to delete the account for iCloud, what can I do?

I bought the iPhone 5c. Prior to this I changed my apple ID. This phone associates with my old one, which no longer exists and therefore has no password. So, I cannot use icloud on my phone. Any suggestions?

  • TS5223 Updated to iOS8. I don't remember the password for my old Apple ID or the password for that e-mail. I can't delete the iCloud account without knowing it, although my iTunes and everything else is set to the new Apple ID and password. Help?!

I keep getting pop-ups telling me to sign in to my iCloud and it's very annoying. I have no idea what the old password was, and I don't really have a way of changing the old password because I also don't know my password for the e-mail address connected to it (it kept telling me that the answers to my security questions were wrong, but I'm not sure what other answers they would have been). Therefore, I created an entirely new e-mail and a new Apple ID and everything else is set to that ID... except iCloud. Is there any way to correct this, or am I out of luck?

If your device is signed into an old iCloud ID, and if it is an earlier version of your current ID*, do the following:
Make sure you are signed into iMessage and FaceTime with your current ID.  If they are signed into the old ID, go to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive and Settings>FaceTime, tap the ID, sign out, then sign back in with your current ID.
Then temporarily recreate the old ID by going to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  (You should not have to verify the old email account so it doesn’t matter if you no longer have access to it.)  Now go to Settings>iCloud, turn off Find My iDevice and enter your current password when prompted (even though it prompts you for the password for your old ID).  Then go to Settings>iCloud, tap Sign Out (or Delete Account if you are not running iOS 8) and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign back in with your current iCloud ID and password (your data will download back to your device).
    * If that's not the case, you'll have to contact the Apple account security team and ask for assistance resetting the password for the old ID: Apple ID: Contacting Apple for help with Apple ID account security.  You'll have to be able to prove your identity to them before they will do this.

    Hi Aurion23,
If you intend to keep using iCloud on your iPad, your best course of action would be to update your Apple ID/iCloud information so that you have a known password and it is associated with an active email address. You may find the following articles helpful:

If the setting is greyed out perhaps you have restrictions enabled that would prevent someone from changing accounts. Settings>General>Restrictions>Allow Changes>Accounts.

We purchased a new iPad2 and registered it using a 'new' iCloud email/ID. We are unable to send email from the iPad and iPhone. The error is:>> Cannot send mail. The user name or password for iCloud is incorrect.

About ~20 hours later, this ended up solving itself. We can send email using the '.icloud' email from both the iPad and iPhone.  Advise would be 'wait' before you start seeking alteranatives like yahoo, hotmail, etc.  This definitely is a convenient way to keep all your 'cloud' information in a centralized place, including the common email...

  • How do I stop the message "user name or password for iCloud is incorrect" from popping up 2 times in a row when i try to get mail from other accounts? thank you in advance

How do I stop the message "Cannot get mail. The user name or password for iCloud is incorrect" from popping up 2-4 times consecutively every time I choose MAIL on my iPhone 4,  7.1.1  I have to select "OK" 2-4 times each time before I can read other email accounts.  I used to have an "@me.com" account which I think was automatically changed to an "@icloud.com account."  I opened a new iCloud.com account yesterday because I could not figure out how to get in the old ones.  I want to delete the original @me & original iCloud account.  When I try to delete the account, they tell me my DOB is wrong. I just want those pop ups to stop.  Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hi Suzanne,
It sounds like you’re running into a password issue with an older Apple ID that’s setup on your iPhone, which is preventing you from removing an iCloud account from your device. Take a look at the article linked below, it outlines all of the possible ways to change an Apple ID password.
If you forgot your Apple ID password - Apple Support
After you enter your Apple ID, there are three ways you can change your password:
Answer your security questions. Use these steps if you know the answers to your security questions.
Use email authentication. We'll send you an email that you can use to change your password.
Use two-step verification. If you set up two-step verification, you can use it to change your password. You just need your recovery key and a trusted device.
    So long,
    -Jason

You can't delete an existing account, you can only choose to stop using it.  It will still be there should you decide to use it again in the future.
