Mail Keeps Downloading the Same Emails

As of this morning, Mail (v4.5) keeps downloading the same emails over and over. I've got my delete setting to delete after one week (not immediately after download), but this has never been an issue before. In fact, I have multiple email accounts that access the same mail server, but only this one account is having this issue. I've gone in to my mailbox via Mail2Web and deleted all the messages in case it was some kind of corrupt email causing the issue. But as new emails come in, the problem reappears--the new emails are downloaded over and over. This is with a POP account.
I would think it'd be a server issue, not a Mail issue, but none of my other accounts that access the same mail server are affected. Any suggestions?

Hi,
I have several acocunts all retrieving mail from various servers.
Yesterday changed a configuration from one server to stop automatically forwarding e-mail to another server and, instead, just have mail retrieve the messages directly from that box.
Now, for some inexplicable reason, mail keeps retriving the same messages stored on each server everytime it logs in. I know have up to 4 - 6 copies of some messages in both mail boxes for these two servers. I have re-examined all my settings and they are as they should be.
I fanally trashed all old mail on the servers (there was over 1500 from the past week on one which was continuosly being downloaded.)
What could possible be causing it? How do I fix it?

Never mind about the Junk Folder missing. I found out about that.
Still receiving the duplicate e-mails though.

For POP accounts, Mail uses a file within the
account
folder to keep track of which messages have
already
been downloaded. That file may have become corrupt
or
the data stored there may have become invalid for
some reason.
You may try deleting that file so that Mail
creates
it anew, but that will also cause Mail to treat
everything still on the server as if new
and
try to download it again:
1. Quit Mail.
2. In the Finder, go to the
~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/
account folder.
3. Locate one or two files named
MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded and move them
to
the Trash. Mail 1.x used
MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded
to keep track of which messages had already been
downloaded. Mail 2.x uses
MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded2 for the same
purpose.
Alternatively, you may try clicking Remove
now
in Preferences > Accounts > Advanced, which
should both remove from the server the messages
that
Mail thinks have already been downloaded and reset
MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded.
I tried both of these messages. No luck. I finally
jsut set one of the accounts to immediately delete
the message once it has retrieved it from the server,
though that takes away a certain piece of mind that
it exists in two places at least for a weel.
Anyway. Niw my Junk mail folder has disappeared. I
had it set to train and this morning when I opened
mai it asked if I wanted it to change to automatic.
I said yes and went about looking at new mails.
There qere a lot of junk mail not beeing tagged as I
began to use command-shift-j to mark this messages,
the first few turned brown as they should. The, all
of a sudden, messages started disappearing. When I
looked for the Junk Mail folder on the left, it was
gone! I still have no idea where it is. I spent the
afternoon backing up an d running Disk Warrior. But
Junk didn't return. Any clues? (Possibly this
should be a new thread)
BTW, what are your Preferences > Accounts >
Advanced > Remove copy from server settings?
I had them set to be removed after a week. No I have
one removing them as they are retrieved. This
computer's been running like that for 3 years. Not
sure gremlin has gotten into the works but it's
frustrating as ****.

You can't even delete from the server in mountain lion.... I did it from my old mac, but it didn't work. I keep having 11,000 new emails that can not even be deleted in blocks!!!
Was it a gmail account? Mine is, and my other 2 are fine...

Blackberry 8520 keeps repeatedly downloading the same email messages and facebook notifications

My Blackberry 8520 has all of a sudden started downloading the same email addresses and facebook notifications, that I have already read, I tried deleting them totally and also deleted from my computer inbox, but it just downloaded the next lot in my inbox repeatedly instead. Sometimes it says I have 50 unread messages, which is the same 7 or 8 messages over and over again, showing as unread.
I have rebooted device several times and don't know what else to do now, can anyone help please?

Hi and welcome to the forums!
Have you changed the settings for messages on your account on the providers website?
(Gmail, Yahoo, etc.)
If that's not it try the following:
Go to options advanced options, Host Routing Tables, click to enter. DO NOT click on any listing.
Press menu key, and select register now.
You will get a verification message. Then go to email settings and send service books.
I would suggest logging into the carriers BIS site via PC if you can.
You will get an email per account. Repeat the battery pull and see if the problem is
resolved.

Itunes keeps downloading the same songs over and over again on a shared library

I have a share library on a NAS box, and until now, little problem. But now, iTunes keeps downloading the same songs etc, when I go to another PC, even though the library is shared between the other PC, is the same.
Plus, iTunes repeatably asks for my Password to log in, even though it is correct.
Share Library on NAS box, mapped drive paths to drive letters.
Keeps re-downloading songs and podcasts I all ready have on the NAS box, if I open iTunes on different computer.
This is new behaviour. Has not happend like this till today.
Keeps asking for my iTunes ID and Password, over and over again, evertime I run iTunes, or my iPod.

If your .mac account is set to be type .mac (don't laugh, it can be set to be POP, or IMAP), it functions essentially like an IMAP. As a .mac, the Inbox is actually on the server, and when you display the Inbox, you are displaying everything on the server. Any downloading you observe is purely for purposes of display, according to what selections you have made in Mail Preferences. What you report seems perfectly normal, for a .mac account, and for an IMAP account.
Often an exchange account is also an IMAP account, and thus the behavior would seem normal for that type of account.
Again the Inbox is on the Server, and not on your Mac. Do not confuse this with selecting to Keep copies for Offline viewing -- those copies are refreshed from the server whenever you sign on.
Neither a .mac nor IMAP account folder will contain a MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded file . However, your POP folder should have such a file or two, to control duplicate downloads of messages remaining on the server -- POP was originally designed to remove upon download, but now that many people use more than one computer, it is logical to sometimes leave messages on the server to be download onto other computers.
In the Finder, open Home/Library/Mail and look for a folder named to begin with POP and including the server and/or email address in the name. If there is not a POP folder, then the account has NOT been set up to be something other than POP. If there is a POP folder, it should contain the MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded.

How do I stop mail from looping the same emails into the inbox over and over again? It does the same thing with deleted messages that keep showing up again and again in multiples even after deleting them. I have made sure my server settings in all email accounts are set to delete immediately once I delete them on my MacBook Pro/IPhone. This issue has severely compromised the efficiency of Mail on my MacBook. Thanks for any help you're able to give me.

I have tried that but it does not fix the problem.
The "card" group is not a previous recipient.
Although not available for editing in Contacts, it is a valid group showing up in the "To" field of Messages, Mail, or any app using the AddressBook.
Its associated file is automatically created in:
~/Library/ApplicationSupport/AddressBook/Sources/<hexaFolder>/MetaData/<hexa>ABG roup.abcdg
This is why it also shows up in the Spotlight results...
If I manually remove this file, it gets recreated...
If I turn off the syncing through iCloud, the entry gets deleted. If I turn it up, it comes back!

is there any way to prevent Mail from downloading the same messages over and over again? Mail has a minimum of "50 recent messages" to download, but i hate having to delete them every time i check for new mail! why doesn't the program remember if you have already downloaded a message, and suppress any subsequent downloads???

Go and log out of your MobileMe account and then try logging back in again with a dummy username and password. This can help clear it and then just log back in again with your normal username and password.
Note though that iWeb does not require a password or username to use it - this is MobileMe.
Also, start thinking about MobileMe alternatives before you are forced to in June.

Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.

Thunderbird is locking up on a message and I have to delete it on Bellsouth otherwise it will download the same email over and over. How do I fix?

It started a couple of weeks ago. I noticed one email being downloaded several times. After checking a lot of things I deleted the e-mail on Bellsouth and Thunderbird then downloaded all of my e-mails. Over time it has started to do this several times in one batch of e-mails. The downloading bar will say it's down loading 1 (or whatever the number is) of say 71 messages. It may download 1 or more then it stops downloading. I go into Bellsouth and delete the last message downloaded and hit Get Mail in Thunderbird to start the process over.
If I don't delete the last e-mail downloaded when I hit Get Mail Thunderbird will download the same e-mail again and stop. Some times it will start a download and work for an extended time and then stop the download without downloading a single e-mail.

That sounds like an anti virus choking on a mail. Norton is fond of doing this, but it is not alone.

If your mail download in this safe mode then look to your anti virus and disable email scanning.

Why does Thunderbird keep retrieving the same emails 2 to 3 times from my hotmail that I already retrieved?

It's not always exactly like this but here is example of the problem I'm having;
In the morning I open Thunderbird and it automatically retrieves the new emails from my web emails Hotmail and Gmail (that's good).
In the afternoon, when I open Thunderbird again, it will retrieve the same emails from Hotmail that I already got in the morning (that's not good).
Sometimes when I open Thunderbird a third time, it will again get those same emails from Hotmail (That's frustrating).
Note:
1) This only happens only with the hotmail account, not the gmail account.
2) The second and/or third time I open Thunderbird is not necessarily the same day, it could be the next day or next time. I just used the morning/afternnon example for ease of explanation.

I have the same issue. I have not followed it up, Hotmail is such a rubbish service these days and I am sick of dealing with support there. They simply do not understand mail or it's protocols. They only comprehend "Microsoft" and their scripts. I just moved on the GMX.
But I am guessing something there is broken. Perhaps it is not moving the mails to the POP folder in a timely manner. But I am seeing exactly the same thing. And it is not always either. Windows 8 uses IMAP so they really do not care if POP works or not. They would probably prefer not.

Cant Send Mail & keep getting the same E Mail over & over

I'm Having a couple of problems with my e mails
1st i have had this problem for some time now
my mail client is Vodafone Mail & i use smtp.vodafone.net to send now i have installed thunderbird & it works fine its just mail it does this with i use mail with other pop accounts personal & work & it works fine with them
i have tried to talk to vodafone tech support & they have just said all is working fine there end & it should be working just fine they also told me that i should not need to use my password to send e mails. so i have tried to send e mails with & without the password without any success

i keep getting the same e mail over & over again everytime mail refreshes to recieve mail i get another one
i deleted the message last week but it still keeps coming i have spoke to the sender asking if he had put it on some sort of repeat send he said not
i have had to delete this message over 500 times & it is starting to really annoy me

just thought of this actually i asked vodafone when i spoke to them on the phone they told me it doesnt matter
when it asks for my username in the authentication part i was just putting in the first part of my e mail address i have just put in the whole e mail address as my username & it worked straight away
as for the other problem still happeneing i'm afraid
as to your questions i am using the application mail which was on my mac when i bought it its the icon with the postage stamp with an eagle on it
i use my pop 3 vodafone account for my e mails which i have setup in the aplication mail you could say it is webmail as i can access my e mails from the vodafone.net website i use it as i also have my mobile phone linked to it
i have been on the vodafone.net site & i cannot find anything on there to solve my problem & i am still recieveing the same e mail

I keep getting the same emails twice, after I've deleted from device and read on desktop!

While at work, I usually read my email on my computer, but I still get them on my BB, which I delete right away. However, even after it's already been read on my computer and deleted from my Curve, I end up with another alert for the same email, and the email as unread in my Curve inbox.
How can I make that STOP? I don't need to be told more than once that I have a new email, and even less so if I've already read it!
