Mail keeps on asking to use Keychain

It seems I'm not alone in this but … recently Mail started asking for permission to use Keychain each time I open it for the first time in a session. I read what seemed to be the appropriate pages in Help, and followed the instructions as best I could, but to no avail.
Anybody out there understand what's going on?

Hey thanks for all the responses. I've still got the problem and am beginning to suspect it is because I have four different accounts and 3 out of 4 have the same password. Anyway, it's apparent from reading around, that this is not an uncommon problem with Mail. Simplest solution seems to give up on Mail and use some other mail browser. I love my iMac and think OS X is, generally speaking the best system in the world BUT!! … nothing's perfect and Apple would do well to put a bit of work into upgrading Mail (and Safari, for that matter. I'll go and see what Mozilla have to offer.

  • Windows live mail keeps uploading deleted emails. using the HP Pavilion Slimline s5623w

Emails that have been deleted months ago are continuously reloading to my inbox. I have the Norton anti virus running on my desktop and it is indicating that everything is fine. Not quite sure what to do. I haven't installed any new software to my computer.

    Hello queenbre2000,
To clarify you are using the Windows mail application and not necessarily using Live mail from Microsoft?
What email accounts are you using within Live Mail? Since the application supports many different email providers knowing your exact provider and how you have it configured is going to help with providing proper steps.
    So questions for you
    1. Clarify that you are using Windows Live Mail as in the application?
1a. If yes, what email provider are you using within the application?
1b. If no, what application are you using to get your Live Mail?
    2. Are you configured for POP or IMAP access?
    3. Are you running the latest version of the application that you are using?
    4. Do you have the latest Microsoft Windows Updates?
    5. Don't delete, instead manually move an item from the inbox to the trash by dragging and dropping, does it reappear in the inbox?
    6. If you view your email online through the website is the email showing in the inbox?
Please post back clarifications to the questions.

  • Mail keeps on asking for password

Several times a day, mail asks for my passwords - I type them in and check the "remember" box but it doesn't help.
Is there anything I can do? This happened before the Leopard upgrade.

Have you deleted OS 9 to free up space? You might have accidentally deleted Keychain in the process if you did. I don't know if its possible, but you might have. Have you been having problems like this in the past?

  • What do I do if Mail keeps rejecting my password and I cannot find it anywhere?

I just bought a new Mac mini Lion OS. Everything was going well until I tried to set up my mail account. Even on my old Mac I was getting continual messages to enter my password and no password I tried was accepted. This was going on for the past month. Every time I tried to use Mail I was asked for my keychain password and nothing I tried would work. Then, two days ago I was setting up my new Mac mini and the same thing is now occurring. I cannot send or receive mail. I have tried a bunch of different things such as starting a new account on yahoo! mail, deleting my accounts. I don't have anything of value yet on my new Mac so I would be happy to start the entire installation process over again if that is needed. My question is: how to I get my email to work on this machine? Thanks.

Did you happen to install Cydia or what they refer to as jailbreaker recently?

  • As of Friday Night, Apple MAIL (in Tiger) asks for imap password? Why?

As of Friday night, when accessing my email (via AOl's imap server enabled through Tiger's 10.4.8 Mail, I can no longer get my new mail. I changed no settings on the computers (this began occurring on two of my Macs--a 15-inch G4 Titanium PB 867 and a Dual 1 GHZ Quicksilver) within the Apple Mail apps. I just started getting this weird alert/dialog box saying "unable to recognize your 'imap' password, please re-enter"--which I then did--to no avail. I could not get any new mail.
Now, on my other Mac, a G4 Upgraded B&W G3 running Panther, the mail runs fine. I can see my new mail--which I tested by sending a message from the "Tiger" computers to myself. The message would be sent--I could hear the "whoosh"--but not show up in the Tiger mailboxes. Of course--got in the Panther 10.3.9 Mail In-box no sweat!
Rebuilt permissions on both machines, still no change. The e-mail works fine when I access it via the web (through AOL), but I just can't figure out what happened since Friday night? Is AOL having IMAP server trouble? I just dunno. All I do know is that my mail is now broken under Tiger and I now have to go through more hoops to get my mail--the extra webmail shenanigans are a kludge, and having an Airport card in the PB is sort of negated a lot having to do teh whole webmail access when it worked so well before just hitting my "Mail" icon.
I've checked the forums and seen nothing mentioned about any "problems" since last night, sooooo, I guess maybe it's ME...but, on both computers? Weird.
Any help wopuld be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks much,
    Yusuf Lamont

OK, I just want to make clear that Mail is asking for the Keychain password over and over again, periodically, while Mail is open. It does not ask for the passwords to individual accounts. There is no problem logging into any of the three email accounts I have activated. The normal behavior of Mail is to ask for the Keychain password once upon launch. What it does now, is continue to ask for the Keychain password periodically - perhaps every fifteen minutes, or so.
    I have tried:
Running Keychain Repair. It did find problems, repaired them, but this did not resolve the issue.
Disabled accounts one at a time, hoping to isolate the problem to one account - no luck. Then I disabled all at once. Mail continued asking for Keychain password, even though all accounts were disabled.
Deleted Keychain Items associated with these e-mail accounts, and re-created them. This did not resolve the issue.
Cursing Mail each time it asked for, and I had to re-enter, the Keychain password. This, also, did not resolve the issue.
I can't see anything in the Console associated with Mail. What would cause Mail to ask for the main password after it's already been entered? It seems to me that if the problem were coming from a server, it should cease once the account's been disabled. If it were a Keychain issue, I would expect to have problems with other apps. Obviously, it's not a problem with the Keychain Items themselves since they were deleted and re-created. That leads me to think the problem is with Mail. But, I've been wrong before....

  • I am using a Macbook Air mid 2012 and an apple application "Mail". With only one email account (Yahoo), everything works perfectly. But the problem started when I added GMAIL account. Now it keeps on asking for my password for gmail and keychain.

With only Yahoo account in my Macbook Air "Mail", everything works perfectly. Problem started when I added my Gmail account. It keeps on asking my account and keychain passwords. And all my accounts always works offline.

It sounds like you may need to go into Mail>Preferences>Accounts and Complete setting up you Gmail account.  It may not be finished being setup.  For instance, note the line below to be selected from the drop down list in "Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP", then  "Edit SMTP Server List":
    Hope this helps

  • Mail keeps asking me keychain until I visit mail provider on safari

Hi, for some reason, when I open mail up it asks me for my "keychain" password, in this case my password I use to login to my hotmail. But, for some reason it will not accept the password untill I open up Safari and actually log into my hotmail.
How can I solve this issue? Thanks.

    Woohoo! I got it fixed
Apparently the keychain is often corrupted for many people after upgrading to 10.4 to Leopard.
The fix is (in my case) to run the "keychain first aid". There are step-by-step instructions on the following link (they suggest booting up in Safe Mode first... I did not (thats your call)).

  • Mail keeps asking for password, over and over and over again. How to fix?

How do I stop this behavior of Mail?
I tried disableing my account and resetting it up, but it won't let me do that either. I use Mac OS 10.6.8.

OK. When you say that Mail doesn’t save the password, are you basing this solely on the fact that Mail keeps asking for it? Or is there something else that makes you believe Mail doesn’t save the password?
Open /Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access, choose Keychain First Aid from the application menu, and proceed to repair the keychain. If that doesn’t work, try removing the password entry from the keychain and let Mail create it again the next time it asks for it.

  • Mail keeps asking for password and icloud setting do not load in system preferences

    Hi,
I have a mac mini server with mavericks, i have 2 iMacs as clients running mavericks too, when i use iMac (A) mail app and icloud work fine, them i take iMac (B) and mail app start asking for password , it just won't take the password, icloud do not load and cannot use anything else on system prferences because it locks system preferences, i need to force quit system prefrences , so I return to iMac (A) and i get same behaivor as iMac (B), i would appreciate your help for finding a solution for this.
All network users get the same behaivor, local users do not get this behaivor.
    Thanks
    Hector

    Hector;
I have the same problem. The solution is to log into your client, open Keychain, run Keychain First Aid under file menu. If it fails to find your keychain, note the path, mount the disk that it is looking for, and rerun.
In short, you need to have the disk that your keychain is sitting on mounted. While your user account is mounted, Maveriks cannot match the reference path. Looking like a bug.
    Example:
my folder sits on a second disk on server. It is properly setup in the mavericks server.
On the server, it is locally referred to as: /Volumes/my_disk/Users/my_user. I can log in to mail on the server when I log in with my user name.
In the workgroup manager, the same location is referred to as:
    afp://my_server.local/Users/my_user (or smb)
    /Network/Servers/my_server.local/Volumes/my_disk/Users/my_user
So this is the network path. So the client should be looking for that. But instead, it looks for the local disk, which is not mounted as such. In other words, it looks for:
    /Volumes/my_disk/Users/my_user/Library/Keychains
    instead of
    /Network/Servers/my_server.local/Volumes/my_disk/Users/my_user/Library/Keychains
To eliminate this problem, you mount the volume on the client, so it can find. I will keep the editorial to myself, but this is not quality software.

  • Mail keeps asking for password but won't go online

I am having multiple problems with passwords on my MB Pro -- FYI running 10.9.   Just fixed a problem with being unable to get into my admin account because I didn't know the password; got that fixed then had problems with keychains - still having.  Keeps asking if I want to go back to default keychain (don't get the keychain thing as it is).  Now both emails are offline and Mail keeps asking me to enter passwords but then it won't go online.  could use some advice or links to fixes

    Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Mail Keep asking for password despite saving....

    Hi there,
I use POP Hotmail using the mail program. It all works fine but I do keep getting asked for the password often even though this has been set up on the mail program and using hotkeys.
It's a little problem but a rather annoying one, any suggestion greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks in advance

if deleting and recreating keychain items doesn't fix it, you could, for no particular reason, try reapplying the 10.6.1 update (and generally speaking, for 10.6.2 and beyond, always reapply the combo update not the incremental update).
Reapplying (combo) updates has been known to fix a myriad of strange problems that people have experienced with Tiger and Leopard, as apparent by old threads in iChat and Mail and other forums. In fact, when updates are released, with the exception of .0➛.1 updates, I always apply the combo, not the incremental, updates.
OF course, no guarantees that this strategy will fix your problem, but it shouldn't hurt anything, either. Recommend that you run disk utility verify (and repair if necessary) hard drive and disk utility repair permissions before reapplying combo updates.
One other thing, as a test, you might try (temporarily) creating this mail account in another user account and see if the same thing happens.

I have icloud on my phone with an apple id that I no longer use. I keep getting asked to enter the password for this ID. However I can't remember the password.
When I try to re-set the password, a e-mail will be send to an address I no longer use and can't access.

    Welcome to the Apple community.
This feature has been introduced to make stolen phones useless to those that have stolen them.
However it can also arise when the user has changed their Apple ID details with Apple and not made the same changes to their iCloud account/Find My Phone on their device before upgrading to iOS 7, or if you restore from a previous back up made before you changed your details.
The only solution is to change your Apple ID back to its previous state with Apple at My Apple ID, verify the changes, enter the password as requested on your device and then turn off "find my phone".
You should then change your Apple ID back to its current state, verify it once again, delete the iCloud account from your device and then log back in using your current Apple ID. Finally, turn "find my phone" back on once again.

  • I have an iMac, and have a Verizon DSL account. Recently, my Mac Mail keeps requesting the passwords on my account every few minutes, and will not allow me to send messages using Mac Mail. I cannot edit the outgoing server; how can I send emails?

I have an iMac, and have a Verizon DSL account (3 email addresses). Recently, my Mac Mail keeps requesting the passwords on my accounts every few minutes, and will not allow me to send messages using Mac Mail (the message says that the outgoing server was rejected. I cannot edit the outgoing server, and the keychain will not save my passwords (the ports are valid). How can I change the outgoing server to send emails, and how can I avoid having Mail request my passwords every 2 minutes? Verizon, as usual, will not provide support to iMacs.

Is there an email saved in your drafts or outbox folder?  I suspect that Mail is continually trying to send it, and each time Google is rejecting the email message.
You can open the message and then delete it from your Outbox folder.  Then try removing all @gmail email addresses from it and seeing whether you can send to the other folks.  I suspect that will work.
With email, if an SMTP server *can* verify email addresses, sometimes it will and it will refuse to send messages.  If a message has to be relayed across servers, no verification is done, and you'll get a bounce if an email address is bad.

When I look up the account the "password" is a long string of gobbledygook. Something I would never do.
But when I attempt to use that pw I still can't get in.
I have no trouble accessing that email account on my mac mini. Just on the macbook.

    Maiko,
I'm confess I'm still trying to get a handle on your problem. You do a fantastic job of describing it ... but I'm just trying to picture it accurately in my head.
I think, were I in your shoes, I'd begin by looking at what the debug page has to say for the specific destination in which you're interested in fixing. In other words, I'm not clear on where, exactly, this destination points ...
    Destination illinois.edu.1945806043
Is that your site, or the division within your site that you want to fix? "Normally", you do not need to specify a site handle to get to your site within your transfer CGI ... if you say "uillinois.edu", it's enough to transfer your users to iTunes U ... but every site still has a handle, and you could, if you wanted to, actually specify it in your transfer CGI. For example, this:
    Destination uic.edu.1139051993
is for my entire site ... it's my site handle. Whereas this:
    Destination uic.edu.1991288441
is for a division within my site ... but it's impossible to tell the difference between "site" and "division" from just the handle (I mean, if I didn't say "this is a site" and "this is a division", there'd be no way for you to know). So when I look at your creds and permissions on your debug page, I can't quite tell if they give you download access for your site, or for the specific division you want to fix. If you could open the debug page with your division as destination (or confirm that that's what we're looking at), it'd rule out some things.
