Mail keeps retrieving old messages

I was wondering if there is a way to set up mail where it stops getting old messages. I am trying to clear up my mailbox but every time I do it retrieves old messages from the server and then I have to clear those out. In addition, the old messages that are added come up as unread so my unread message number indicator on the icon is always high. I want to be able to have a lot of messages in my inbox but I just wish it would stop getting old messages unless i tell it to. Does anyone else have troubles with this?

Just a curiosity...
POP3 and imap have implemented a 'last' feature. This is a value that represents the last message that the client (iPad mail) has seen from that server.
Sometimes the versions are funky and this 'last' is not implemented or not compatible.
Since this is an old feature (5 years as I remember) most sendmail servers support it. But, well versions and opinions being as they are some people don't use industry standard products and muck up features.
THis isnt all that helpful in solving the issue. But may be useful in diagnosing it.

  • Hotmail Email Keeps Retrieving Old Messages

Hi, I was given a 3GS iPhone recently and sent up several email accounts on it. The problem is that with my main account, Hotmail, the phone keeps loading up way old emails after I delete the previously loaded ones. I just want new emails to be updated. Is there a way to stop this from happening? If so, can the directions be simple because I am new to this. Thank you

The is standard behavior when creating a POP account with an email client such as the iPhone's Mail application.
If you created your Hotmail account as a POP account with another email client on your computer that hasn't been used to access the account, all received messages that remain at the incoming mail server for the account would be downloaded as new and unread messages.
Microslop supports accessing a Hotmail account as a POP account only.

I guess you could try but I don't believe Apple can help with activation lock issues.  They may, however, be able to determine if the Apple ID belongs to one of you and reset the password for you if you can prove your identity.
You might want to try calling Apple by going to https://expresslane.apple.com; click 'More Products and Services, then 'Apple ID'.  In the next page select 'Other Apple ID Topics' then 'Lost or forgotten Apple ID password'.  Perhaps they can help determine if it's your ID and reset the password for you (and they probably have more expertise in doing this than the Apple store).

When I open my macbook, mail activity shows old messages incoming.

Try rebuilding the mailbox. This can take awhile if you have a lot of mail.

  • Retrieving Old Messages

    Hi Experts,
Is there any way we can retrieve old message Ids in XI. What's the criteria that XI archieves the messages??
Does it depend upon certain period of time or it depends upon the flow of messages? Are they archieved or they are permanently deleted from the database?
Is there any way, we can retrieve those messages?
    Please suggest.

  • My itouch mail keeps loading old emails and displaying them as unread.  If I delete them it just loads 50 more older ones

My itouch mail keeps loading old emails and displaying them as unread.  If I delete them, 50 more load....old ones that I have long since read and discarded.  Any suggestions.  It appears to be only 1 of my email accounts that does this.  I have deleted the account and resynced to get it back in use, but 50 old emails come up as if they are new unread ones.  Thanks for any help.

I am having the same issue and it started the same day.  My other mac does it as well but has been an issue for two years.  I just gave up on it and stopped using email from that mac.  I just spend 4 days trouble shooting ti myself when i had time and now spent 2 hours with apple on a chat and screen share and they couldnt solve it either.

  • Mail is sending old messages automatically.

Mail is sending old messages automatically. It's been doing this for about six months.
It only happens when open mail.
How can i stop this. I'm running tiger and have performed all the available software updates.
    Thanks

First I'd backup your whole Mail folder.
Try trashing this file first, then logout/in...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
If that doesn't work try the .plists in...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/

  • Mail keeps receiving deleted messages!!!

Running OS X version 10.9.5 on my macbook air...ongoing issue with MacMail. It keeps receiving old deleted messages. This is super frustrating. It is happening with all my email accounts. I go through and delete the old emails...a day later I sign in to mail and it downloads 1000 messages again! Its like Groundhog day...Help!! I tried deleting messagesalreadydownloaded files in the mail data folder as I saw someone posted that as a solution but it did nothing...the files just reappear.

You have multiple email accounts, you will need to check how you have your server(s) set up to handle your mail.
Go to Mail, go to Preferences, go to Accounts, go to Mailbox behaviors and see the options you may have set.

  • Mail re-sends old messages

old messages (~6 months) get re-sent???

My mail application is completely screwed up: it
re-sends old messages to people and it's becoming a
HUGE problem. It's completely random but it happens
at least once a day. I'm also having trouble with
attachments -- i often can't open them (even though
it's just a file or something).
I would like to trash the application and just
re-install it. Does anyone know how to do this?
The easiest way is to use a program called "Pacifist." It allows individual packages to be installed. Just Google the program name and mac and download it. ($20 shareware and totally worth it)
Use your original OSX 10.4 install disk and run pacifist and re-install the mail package using Pacifist. Download any updates (ie: OS X 10.4.5 combined) and repeat the process with the updated mail application included in the combination package.
You will now have a fresh, current install of mail.

  • Failure of Mail to retrieve email messages

I use Apple Mail, ver.1.3.11 for email, and use Firefox as my browser 2.0.0.0.17. I open the browser, then use the Get Mail icon in Mail to transfer it from my ISP's site. Lately when I go to Get Mail, the followiing appears: "The message from (name and address of sender) has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this message online in order to download it." At this point I click on "Quit" above the Mail icon in the Dock and, as soon as it quits, re-click on the icon to open Mail again, and at that point the email message appears.
Any suggestions as to what's going on and how I might bypass the step of having to close and then reopen Mail? Thanks in advance.

Duane: I'll restate my October 28 post as follows:
My problem is that when I go to check email using Apple Mail, and press "Get Mail" I get the following message: "The message from (name and address of sender) has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this message online in order to download it." In order to retrieve the message, I then quit Apple mail and immediately restart it. When Mail reopens the message is there. Any thoughts about what is causing this annoying problem? I have to go through the above procedure every time I open Mail and attempt to retrieve new mail.

  • Mail showing very old messages in inbox

When I do a search on someone's name for whom I have received an email, I often get other emails with that same name (but a different person) that are from 2005!when I click on the email, there is nothing showing in the preview and there's nothing when I click on 'Show in mailbox' either. Any ideas where these very old messages are stored???

I see the choice in Mailboxes. I just tried it and unfortunately it wiped out all my 'trash' contents. I typically keep trash for 6 months out in case I need to refer to thing that inadvertently found there way there instead of a folder. Darn. I hadn't realized it would wipe out the ones in the trash folder. Yeah, I know they were 'deleted' from the inbox, and others, etc. but I still considered them safe until I deleted them physically from the trash mailboxes. My error but I can recover them from Time Machine. And ironically, the emails from 2005 are still showing up when I do a find on say, the name "kate". Oh well. still unresolved at this point. thanks for trying though.

  • Mail is moving old messages from folders into the inbox

    Hey,
Mail has started behaving really weird. It has started to move old messages, from various folders into the inbox. When i try to move it back, i have to use the contextual menu to do that, drag and drop doesn't work.
Has anyone experienced this before? Help is greatly appriciated!
    /Andreas

    Hi Andreas.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, and ensuring that there’s enough space available on the startup disk (a few GB, plus the space needed to make a backup copy of the Mail folder), proceed as follows to re-create Mail’s index:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Make a backup copy of this folder, just in case something goes wrong, e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down. This is where all your mail is locally stored.
    3. Locate Envelope Index and move it to the Trash. If you see any other “Envelope Index”-named file there, delete it as well.
    4. Move any “IMAP-”, “Mac-”, or “Exchange-” account folders to the Trash. Note that you can do this with IMAP-type accounts because they store mail on the server and Mail can easily re-create them. DON’T trash any “POP-” account folders, as that would cause all the mail stored there to be lost.
    5. Open Mail. It will tell you that your mail needs to be “imported”. Click Continue and Mail will proceed to re-create Envelope Index — Mail says it’s “importing”, but it just re-creates the index if the mailboxes are already in Mail 2.x format.
    6. As a side effect of having removed the IMAP account folders, those accounts may be in an “offline” state now. Do Mailbox > Go Online to bring them back online.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. That is, ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder, i.e. /Users/username/Library.

  • Mail automatically moves old messages into a new folder.

    Hi,
I noticed today that Mail automatically created a new folder called Aug2009 and moved all my old messages from my Inbox into that folder. How do I stop it from doing that? I would like to be able to see and search through ALL my mail at once, not just one month at a time.
    Thanks for your help
    -Patrick

    Greetings,
Sounds like you have a Rule setup to do that, since it's not something Mail would do all by itself. Look in Preferences > Rules for that and if you see it, delete it; then move the messages back to your Inbox.
