Mail, Keychain & Disk Utility Issues After Install

My clean install of Leopard seem to go fine. After restart it wanted to grab an Apple Remote Desktop update, I believe, via software update. Re-installed clean copies of further mac software and known Leopard compatible 3rd party apps.
My problems started to appear when I used migration assistant to transfer 2 accounts from my 10.4.10 backup. Both accounts went over, but on one the mail upgrade process consistently failed and on the other the keychain seemed to be of no use.
All's fine now, I manually imported the errant mail acount and just started with a fresh keychain on the other offending account. I know the backup was sound as I subsequently used it to restore a Tiger install as a fallback on another disk.
My last issue appears every-time I run Disk Utility to verify and repair permissions. I get the following text displayed part way through a verify and or repair.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
The verify/repair completes and I can quit Disk Utility. I'm presuming this is as a result of the early software update Leopard wanted to perform and the current shipping version of Disk Utility has no idea of the desired permission state of this file?
Was just wondering if anyone else had experienced any of the above or had any explanation?
Hope you're all having more fun than headaches with Leopard.

Nerowolfe,
I have installed Leopard and have had nothing but problems as well. Perhaps you can help me. I am ready to roll back to Tiger. These are just a few:
1. I cannot mount my external firewire drives. I have separately tested each and they work fine, I booted with the Tiger disk and they mounted fine, I reset the firewire port and when I connected them they mounted on my desktop, but not in the finder window and when I tried to open one, it just hung. I have been unsuccessful after many attempts to mount one of them with Leopard.
2. I appear to get random hangs. I have a 160GB hard drive and 2GB memory. I have 42 GB space left on the hard drive....yet I continue to have random hangs, especially when I try to open disk utility
3. Spotlight just does not work, period
4. I keep finding locked folders. Right now my CS3 is locked and even after going into get info and unlocking it, it just locks back and I am unable to open the application. I am a photographer and have been unable to do any work for the past 2 weeks while I am messing around with my computer. Now I have Christmas photos to sort and can't access the photos on the external drives or even open CS3
I have searched the forums, tried many of the recommendations, but nothing is working for me....perhaps since you have been successful you could give me a hand with these issues.
I wait for help.......
Other than that, how do I uninstall Leopard and reinstall Tiger????

  • Disk Utility crashes after Leopard upgrade

I have a problem with Disk Utility crashing (error message is the generic "application unexpectedly quit")on launch after upgrading from Tiger to Leopard. For the most part the pgrade was fine but somehow I lost Disk Utility. Has this been seen before? What might I try? Incidentally, the mini has 2Gigs of RAM and plenty of free disk space. The problem occurs in all accounts. Oh, I forgot to mention that I also upgraded to the latest version of Leopard (without checking whether disk utility worked after to install from the disk - so technically, this could be an combo upgrade issue? Having said that, I did exactly the same with the G4 mini and had no issues.
    Any thoughts?

Boot from the Leopard DVD - hold down "C" key with disk already in place - and after the language screen, in the menu top left, select Utilities and run the DU from there. Repair HD and permissions.
If you did a "merge" install from Tiger (default) then you may have brought some things along that Leopard does not like.
Did you have any "haxies" or other old 3rd party apps installed in Tiger? Most of them won't work with Leopard and need to be replaced or removed.

  • Safari, Mail and Disk Utility won't run unless Font Book is Open

Recently Safari, Mail and Disk Utility would crash and spin and the "Application Not Responding" line would appear when I checked the program in the dock. After following a variety of tips from other Apple users, I finally got the programs to run. However, I started them while Font Book was open and now they only work when it remains open. I've been using Apple/Mac products since the beginning of time and have never seen anything like this. I've repaired permissions, throught out preferences, etc., etc. and can't resolve this problem. Please, someone, help me.

    Hello buhrow:
That makes two of us that go back to the beginning of time and have never seen anything like that. Have you run the fontbook applications to eliminate duplicates and check for corrupt fonts? Offhand, I cannot understand why just having a program open would prevent other programs from crashing.
If nothing else works, you might want to consider an archive and install (after backing up, of course):

  • Issues after installing Classic on OS 10.4

    Background and System
    I have a Power Mac G3 350Mhz Rev 2 Blue and White, 512MB, 40GB, DVD ROM
running 10.4.9 installed from Retail DVD. Firmware up to date. 2x 20 GB partitions formatted as Extended
Prior to this issue OS X has been running well.
    Issue:
After installing OS 9.2.1 to second partition OS X will now not boot up from DVD nor it's partition
    Solutions tried:
I wanted to install a Classic environment so used a Retail OS 9.2.1 Bootable CD and did a full install to the second partition.
After the install finished and the system restarted, set on the OS X (Partition1) for start up the system hangs right after the Apple "Chime". with no signal to video card
Attempted to then boot from OS 10.4 DVD but this does not get detected when holding "c" down for boot up from CD option. This worked perfectly before.
Have run OS 9.2.1 Disk Aid Verify and both partitions are ok. The system will boot from the 9.2.1 CD and partition but anything to do OS X now will not work. I also tried an Ubuntu 6.06 Live CD but this will not now boot either.
Checked firmware and tried to re run firmware update and this advised my firmware was up to date.
    Any other suggestions?
    Thanks

The only thing I can think of is that when you installed the 10.4.9 OS you didn't option to install OS 9 drivers.

  • Issues after installing Mavericks

I am having a ton of issues after installing macericks on wed evening, on my MBP 15" 2.5 GHz i7 with 8GB of memory,
I have a task com.apple.internetaccouts, and com.apple.MailServiceAgent, taking upwards of 100% CPU at time and the fan will go full speed, and earlier today i had a msg come up that i had run out of usable memory and the sytem had paused programs, I have restarted a few times and still the same things are coming up and the system has become really slow.
would think that with this system not being that old, that i should not be having these types of issues, if there is something that someone could lead me to ths casue i thnk you
    Thanks
    Doug

Had this issue again today on my wife's iMac.  This was after the Mail.app update that was recently released.  I now have messed with this issue enough that I believe I have figured it out.
I used to have a plugin for Mail called HTTPMail that was used to access Hotmail prior to them having POP/IMAP.  It seems that removing the account from Mail left some residual account details in the ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Accounts.plist file.  Mavericks Mail.app chokes on this account detail and starts duplicating it numerous times.  That's why the Accounts.plist file grows so large.
If you open the Accounts.plist file in a text editor (TextWrangler would be my suggestion), find any <dict> entry that points to services.msn.com in any way and remove all those <dict>...</dict> entries, it should resolve the issue.  Warning though - I had to delete hundreds of entries so it took a while to do.  Once I finished it though, my wife's e-mail has been working fine.

I had similar errors when first setting up the SQL interface. Are you on a 64 bit operating system on the essbase server? If so Essbase needs to use the 32 bit odbc driver, not the default 64 bit driver.
The 32 bit driver is still available here SysWOW64\odbcad32.exe <-----This is the 32 bit (Use)
The Administrative tools by default uses system32\odbcad32.exe <----This is the 64 bit (Don't Use)
Once I opened the 32 bit driver interface directly and set it up the errors went away.

  • Erased free space in Disk Utility, and after it finished it kept a DMG there.

I erased free space in Disk Utility, and after it finished it kept a DMG there called "DeveloperDiskImage.dmg", why is it left behind? can it be deleted? how? if erasing free space is supposed to help get memory and remove all the files truly, it shouldnt be creating anything, it created a DMG at the start, but it went away, after a hour and a half it made the DeveloperDiskImage, i went to eat dinner and when i came back it was done but that was left.

Delete it. Erasing the free space isn't supposed to free up any space; it's there in case someone deleted a file insecurely when they meant to securely delete it.

  • Dreamweaver CS4 having issues after installing PS CS6 Beta

    Hi All,
I'm having issues with Dreamweaver CS4 after installing Photoshop CS6 Beta. I'm getting the follwing erros when trying to open any html file (see attached image).
Once I click OK, the file will open, also now; any copy and paste commands will not work. Anyone else experiencing any problems with other apps after installing this beta version?
Any help and feedback is much appreciated, thanks!

Re :Re: Dreamweaver CS4 having issues after installing PS CS6 Beta
    Just a thought ...
    This may help!
Uninstall the Beta Version of Photoshop CS6 now and then restart your computer and see if that works.
Open the CS4 programs and see if that fixed the problem and it is all working as it should again.
    It is worth a try!
    All the best.

  • Disk Utility Issues Wait to Install Leopard

    Dear fellow Mac users,
Rather than a question, this is a recommendation to those who are wondering whether to install Leopard now or to wait until it gets really stable.
My experience in installing Leopard has not been positive and I chose to revert to Tiger. After discovering several issues and going to the "Genius Bar" of the local Apple Store, I fortunately have been able to restore all my previous settings.
The loss has been mostly time and money, and they frightened me up suggesting that I had to change my hard drive. For those who might experience similar problems, let me provide some details.
    1. Installation of Leopard
After carefully making a bootable backup of my HD on an external drive, I installed Leopard choosing the Option "Erase and install." This occurred without visible glitch. After updating the system to its latest version, I migrated all my data and settings. The result was an incredibly slow system, completely useless. It cannot have been the results of my settings, because I also created a "clean" account called "Maintenance," with the same results. On the recommendation of the "Apple Genius" I also added 1 GB of memory, getting a total of 1.5 GB of RAM installed to the cost of $150. It did NOT improve the situation.
    2. Disk Utility
Because I suspected problems with privileges, I tried to run the Disk Utility. The result was an endless spinning wheel. After waiting several hours, I had to force quit the application. Tried to run it from the install DVD of Leopard, with the same results. People at the Genius Bar also tried their disk utility after booting from an external drive, without any success. They diagnosed a probable failure of the hard drive and recommended that I replace it. Fortunately, I didn't trust this groundless recommendation and made a last attempt by erasing Leopard and reinstalling Tiger. Now it runs just fine, and there is not the slightest mechanical problem. Apparently, and I only discovered this today, the whole disk check procedure changed with Mac OS 10.5, and at this stage it is a complete mess, with enough bugs in Disk Utility to keep the developers busy for a couple of months. I came across discussions of this on the Mac FixIt Website.
Thus, my recommendation at this stage is that if you have Mac OS 10.4.11 running fine you JUST STICK WITH IT and be patient for a few more months. Upgrading at this stage amounts to loosing time, energy, and money. Of course, I am sure that Mac OS 10.5 has many promising features and look forward to using it in the future, but not now. I would be happy to hear contradictory opinions, if any.
    Best wishes for patience.

  • Same Disk Utility issue appeared on 2 different Macs after 10.4.6 upgrade

Yesterday I upgraded the following two different Macs from 10.4.5 to 10.4.6:
    1. iMac G3 400MHz, 384MB ram, Maxtor 40GB HD (update via Software Update)
    2. PowerMac G4 450MHz AGP, 500MB ram, Ata 133 interface with 160GB HD from a brand I don't remember (update via separate 10.4.5->10.4.6 installer)
The update went fine and both computers booted and function normally in all obvious respects.
On the other hand, when I ran Disk Utility on both Macs and verified the startup drive, the SAME IDENTICAL problem was reported:
    Verifying volume “Internal HD”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Illegal name
    Checking multi-linked files.
    Checking Catalog hierarchy.
    Checking Extended Attributes file.
    Checking volume bitmap.
    Checking volume information.
The volume Internal HD needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair
I ran Disk Utility from the 10.4 Install Disk but it says it coulnd't repair the damage.
I'm not sure about how severe this issue is. I'll refrain from reinstalling everything on both computers until more light is shed on the problem. I'm posting this in the hope that others confirm the issue and Apple take a look into it.

  • How do I use Disk Utility to help install Mountain Lion after many failed attempts?

I tried to install Mountain Lion from an App onto my MacBook.
First it said that my disk was damaged to i tried to repair it.
    Didn't work.
Then it said I didn't have enough room to install Mountain Lion.
Then I tried to restore Lion.
    Didn't work.
Then someone suggested I reset my PRAM.
Tried that, and now I am stuck.
I can't restore any of my backups from timeline.
I can't reinstall OSX because my drive is now locked.
And I don't know how to use Disk Utility to solve this problem!
Any suggestions welcome... I'm in way deeper than I understand and feel like anything I do is making this worse!

I gather that your computer is in a less than satisfactory state, so the process below will basically start you from scratch, but you shouldn't lose anything.
Okay, can you inspect the Time Machine Backups with the Finder? About two or so folders down you should start seeing your system files. Assuming all your files are present.
    Important^
You probably have an installation disk that came with your macBook.  Boot from that CD and install from the CD.
Run the verify disk utilites and repair utilities if necessary.
You may want to erase your disk from the CD's disk utility. This will erase your Hard Drive (make sure you do not erase your backups, as that would be very bad).
Once the installation is complete, run all system updates. Either look through your backup and find the Mountain lion installation app, or download it from the app store again.
    Run the ML installtion app.
Once everything is up and running, move all files and folders you want from your TM backups and you should be good to go.

  • Mail 4.3 not working after installing combo

I had problems with my mail after installing snow leopard and then having one failed software update. I then installed the combo. It seemed to successfully install the mail app and then When i opened it, it said to wait while my mailboxes were rebuilt... this was then "done".
after that however mail started to misbehave. The mailbox viewer does not come up (I found it under "Window"). When it did, it looks completely different, doesn't have the buttons up the top , the blue dots indicating a read message are missing etc. I now have some mail in the inbox ( I have 2 inboxes, both IMAP) but only the at the top of the viewer window. The bottom 2/3 is blank - perhaps thats where the preview pane is supposed to be. All my mailboxes on the mac are empty (I do have a backup). i CAN highlight a particular mailbox and choose "rebuild" and it fills up with messages in the bizzaro message viewer
I cant play with it - many commands are unresponsive - eg Preferences, new message viewer etc. I cant even quit. I cant compose a new message, although one time I tried it did give me a "new message" window that was totally unfamiliar.
I have reinstalled it a number of times. I have tried repair disk permissions.
is there any way I can un-install mail and install a clean one? is there a clean one somewhere? The combo doesn't give me an optional install option
Imac intel based 2008   Mac OS X (10.6.4)

I tried trashing it and downloading a fresh copy from the App Store three or four times (including removing the receipts in /private/var/db/receipts), which hasn't worked.
Mark, what do you mean by "hasn't worked"? Could you not download and reinstall, or did the reinstall not fix the issue?
The crash log is not very specific:
    Exception Type:  EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS)
    Exception Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE at 0x0000000000000000
That can either mean a data error or system trouble - by data error I mean, that you may have imported corrupted media (photos or video), or your disk trouble has corrupted images in your iPhoto library. Corrupted media cannot eb fixed by rebuilding the library, and other application may still be able to browse your iPhoto library.
To check, if your iPhoto library may be causing this, test with a new, empty iPhoto library. Try, if you can launch iPhoto with the alt/options-key ⌥ held down and select "Create New". If yes, test, if iPhoto will work with a new library. If a new iPhoto library works, post back. Then you need to remove your last import from your iPhoto library.
If not, some setting in your user account or installed helper applications, preference panes, etc may be causing this or a system corruption.
Then try to launch iPhoto in Safe Mode: Mac OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode? .
and post abck with the results.
    Regards
    Léonie
