Mail locks up on launch - still sending huge file?

I tried to send a 400mb file and Mail crashed. Now every time I launch it, it just cycles the little gear and then locks up.
I think its still trying to send the file. I have attempted to use the pull down to the gear and hit the red stop signs, but the system stalls first and I need to force quit.
Can the app (Mail only) be re-installed fresh from the install discs?
Peter

Hello Peter.
No reason to re-install the Mail.app which rarely resolves any problems with the application.
With the Mail.app quit and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail > Mailboxes > Outbox.mbox.
The Outbox.mbox represents "Out" in the mailboxes drawer and is shared by all accounts.
Delete the Outbox.mbox and empty the Trash.
Launch Mail and a new Outbox.mbox will be created automatically within the Mailboxes folder and this should resolve the problem.
It is impossible to send a 400MB file as an email attachment with any email client or via webmail since most, if not all ISPs and email account providers have a limit on the overall size of received and sent messages.
For example, a .Mac account has a 10MB overall message size limit for received and sent messages and most ISPs and email account providers have a similar limit.
Email account providers also have a server size limit for all received messages and many have only a 10MB allowance. Both of my POP type accounts have a 10MB server size limit for all received messages so even if it were possible to send a message with such a large file and you sent the message to one of my POP accounts, it would be rejected at the incoming mail server since I have only 10MB of server storage space for all received messages.
In addition, all attachments must be encoded before being sent via an email client and the Mail.app uses MIME 1.0 for attachment encoding which is the internet standard.
The encoding process increases the size of the pre-encoded file by roughly 50% or so. A 400MB file will be roughly 600MB after the encoding process.
See What is the maximum size of email attachments? for information about the attachment encoding process with an email client.

  • E-mail locked-up after trying to send a large video file.

I've restarted several times and e-mail is still locked. It still wants to send the file. There are three e-mail addresses aol, gmail and me.  I sent from aol first and got a message to try another due to file size.  I thought it would let me know if the file was too big tp send but it locked up and wouldn't let me do anything even after a forced quit.

Assuming that it's not still trying to send the video, then you could do a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Mail app won't launch: "No Info.plist file in application bundle..."

    Hi -
I'm running 10.6.8 on an Intel iMac and haven't used Mail in a long time.  I tried to start it today and it won't launch.  I opened the Package Contents for the app from the Finder, and double clicked the Mail executable.  It launched in a Terminal window and gave the following error message:
Last login: Thu May 24 12:17:01 on ttys000
    /Applications/Mail.app/Contents/Mail ; exit;
    imac:~ Bill$ /Applications/Mail.app/Contents/Mail ; exit;

I looked and there is a file called Info.plist in the folder and it even has the string NSPrincipalClass in it.  Beyond that, I am clueless!
    Any help much appreciated!

I would download and run the OS X 10.6.8 Combo update.
I peeked into it with Pacifist, and it contains an update for Mail.app, including replacements for the executable and the info.plist:

    1. Quit Mail.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/.
    3. Locate Outbox.mbox and move it to the Desktop if you want to preserve any messages waiting there, or just trash it otherwise.
    4. Open Mail. A new (empty) Outbox.mbox will be created automatically.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user's home folder.

No matter how I try to Email a Safari web page (using the share arrow icon or the mail icon or the File menu), Mail locks up.  Then I have to Force Quit Mail and send the report to Apple.  There must be a bug somewhere, but I can't figure out where!  I have closed and restarted Safari, closed and restarted Mail, restarted my Mac Pro - all to no avail.  I have every update installed - and, in fact, the latest update to Mountain Lion is the culprit, as I didn't have this problem before I installed it!  Is it possible to uninstall this latest update?  Help!!!

You're suffering from two common misconceptions.
    1. You will never get a response from Apple when you submit a crash report. The reports are used internally, if at all.
    2. This is not Apple tech support. This is a forum provided by Apple for users of its products to discuss technical issues among themselves. Apple Mail locks up immediately after I launch, connect to three imap and pop servers and attempt to reply to a message. I force quit, and relaunch, usually successfully. It can happen several times a day!

    Lets try ...

    Volume scen/rep
If none of these show improvement, then we can get a little more creative.

  • Send huge data through the network

    Hi all,
I need to transfer large image (around 200MB) through the network to the neighborhood PCs for processing. The time i have is very short (Say 4 seconds).
Since, i need to send the image to multiple PCs, i thought UDP will be helpful. But the LabVIEW UDP vis having limitation of 548 bytes reading for each run. So i need to run in a loop and get the image. Building the string also will be of great memory related task. So the time taken is very high (in the order of minutes). often, i am missing some of the bytes during the operation.
Then i have tried TCP/IP, planning to send to only one PC. There also when the size is more than 78MB, i am not able to send in single time. Is it so? But i have not seen any limitations in the documents. For 78 MB it take around 18 seconds. But the data is safe.
The great disadvantage of these two method is, i need to flatten as a string and and rebuild the image in the other end.
I have tried one more option also, using save as bmp, and read from the network. This work quite better compared to the other two. Time take to transfer 200MB image is 24 seconds ( 5 seconds to save in the same PC + 19 seconds to read through the network). Still it is far from my requirement. One advantage here is, i can read as image datatype it self.
I have used 100Mps LAN, yes, i can go far 1GPS. Then any other idea how to transfer these huge files in quick manner.
    Thanks,
    Logic

    Hi cc,
Yes, i was quite clear on that. The point i want to explain is - because of the limitation of the VIs (like 548 bytes for UDP & 78MB for TCP/IP) we are not able to achieve this.
I need to flatten to string the 200MB image.
I need to send this in a loop (loop delay may needed to synchronize)
I need to concatenate at the other end
    Unflatten to image
Look at the timing i have send in my last mail. Its huge for UDP & TCP/IP
But the File I/O looks simple and comes closer to your calculation. In my trial i have sent 180 Mega byte image - it took 19 seconds to read from the network PC Harddisk in 100mbps line - which looks good. In a way File I/O also, should do the same (Flatten - read thru network -May be in an ideal way). Anyway, I have left with 2 questions now.
In File I/O, i need to first write image in to Harddisk of the same PC - that time going to remain the same, any ideas on reducing this? Any chance for without saving into HD - transfer?
Will it reduce directly 10 times if i go for 1Gbps? (200MB in 2 Secs?) Anything else decides this timing?
    Thanks,
    logic

Your issue is with the Yahoo email account which is notoriously bad.
you can try deleting and reinstalling the email account.
If that doesn't fix it try the yahoo email app.
