Mail looking on port 0...

Hi all,
I've read a few posts by people having the same problem as me with Mail checking port 0. I've tried all the posted fixes but nothing works. I've posted elsewhere that I can resolve the problem by quitting and re-opening Safari, or if Safari is not running, quitting Mail, starting Safari then restarting Mail. This got me thinking and I realised that my problems started about the time I installed the version 3 beta of Safari.
While I'd still appreciate any suggestions to fully resolve this issue, the main reason for this post is to ask if the other users who are experiencing this port 0 problem are also using beta 3? Maybe the problem's not with Mail at all?

MacBook / G3 iBook / UMAX PPC603e (system 7)   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Update:
I popped over to the Safari Beta 3 boards and had a nose around, the new version installs a different version of WebKit which has a major influence on things that connect to the internet (hence the reboot), and obviously Mail is one of them. So to test my theory I downloaded the installer again and ran the included 'UNinstall' app and rebooted (Windoze anyone?). Ironically, when I ran Mail I still had the same problem, but the port number is now correctly reported as being 110.
As I see it there are three possibilities:
1: The fix worked and Mail is right, my POP3 host is just pants!
2: The fix failed and the problem is more than just an issue with port 0.
3: The fix was a partial success, but Mail was never actually looking on port 0 at all, there was just a variable print out error in the dialogue box...
I'd be interested in hearing if this works for anyone else?

How to tag spam mails in iron port and foreword to junk folder?

    As Dave has suggested.
Positively identified spam recommended actions would be to Drop it -- if you would like to review these emails and manually remove it, then send it to the spam quarantine
This can be changed under the GUI > Mail Policies > Click on Incoming or Outgoing mail Policies and edit the anti-spam settings per policy if needed.
Ideally suspected spam to be sent to the quarantine for further review.
If you do not wish to use a quarantine or drop the email, you can prepend the email as Dave also suggested and send it to the end recipient under [Suspected Spam] <Subject> for the end user to determine it.
However the IronPort will not make specific rules to deliver it to the MUA's Junk mail folder.
This type of setup is normally down to each specific end user to work with on their own MUA  (outlook, lotus, safari etc.)
    I hope this helps.

  • Mail 5.1 port 993 time out

    Hi
since 2 days ago , I face problems in my mail 5.1
mail can't connect to prt 993 , $ get me time out error , I try to recreate my account & mail get me "The Google IMAP server “imap.gmail.com” is not responding. Try checking the network connection, and that the server name is correct. Otherwise, the server might be temporarily unavailable. If you continue, you might not be able to receive messages."
    What should I do?

gmail imap won't import new emails.
    i've tried port 143, and 993.
    checked ssl and not ssl.
    checked password and settings.
went through connection doctor, and it's all green.
gmail account imap settings are right.
i am able to sent out a test email, which reaches my account on the gmail website. but it won't load on apple mail 4.2.
    running snow leopard 10.6.2
sigh read through a few forums and all anyone can say is to reload the account.
there must be an easier way.

  • Mail - Looking for a spotlight plugin that is not installed...

I'm migrating a large mail database from another mail server to Lion Server Mail and it is going fine, but I am seeing lots of errors like this:
Cannot find function pointer OfficeImporterPluginFactory for factory BFA4E323-1889-11D9-82C8-000A959816BE in CFBundle/CFPlugIn 0x104722640 </Library/Spotlight/Microsoft Office.mdimporter> (bundle, not loaded)
    and
indexer process 13609:           /Library/Spotlight/Microsoft Office.mdimporter/Contents/MacOS/Microsoft Office: no matching architecture in universal wrapper
The weird thing about this is that the Lion Server is a clean install, and has never had MS Office anywhere near it.  Nor does it have a /Library/Spotlight directory.  So I'm not sure why Mail / Spotlight are looking in /Library/Spotlight for a MSO plugin.
I'm guessing that the information must be coming from the IMAP data being processed by the mail server - but seems a bit odd.
Anyone know what is going on?  What / Whether I should do anything to mitigate?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Re QTCFR.DLL: Are you sure it isn't QTCF.DLL? That's a QuickTime component.  Try downloading and reinstalling QuickTime from Apple.com.
Re converting to PSE 8: You will have a difficult time of doing that without first having a consistent, connected PSE 6 catalog.  It may be possible, but I recommend sorting out your current situation first.
Generally the easiest way is to install PSE 8 on the old computer, convert your catalogs there, and only then move the catalogs to the new computer, following the methods in this FAQ:
    http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshop-elements-faq.htm#_Move_your_photos_1
This way, you don't need to solve the problem of the missing-disk message.

  • Can javamail use windows default outgoing smtp mail server and port?

how can i use windows default outgoing smtp service and port from javamail? is it possible to retrieve this info or just instruct javamail to use default?
    thanks

Windows doesn't have a default SMTP server. However if you have something like Outlook or Outlook Express or Eudora or Netscape Mail or whatever set up on your Windows box, you will have already told it what SMTP server it should connect to.
That information would be in the Windows registry, or in the config file of whatever e-mail client you already have set up. However it's probably easier to just have your application ask for the SMTP server's name again rather than trying to find where some other application stashed it.

  • What's up with Mac Mail settings not porting and being so laborious?

i am wondering why at such a late date (Mountain Lion and iOS6) i am entering NINE (9!) entries for my email accounts on my iPhone and having to enter my email address for the new account THREE (3!) times - and then having to do this again for EIGHT (8) entries on both my laptop and my desktop.
i have had to do this again due to porting my website to a new host and - well - at a minimum it would be nice to get iOS 6 to only require me to enter my address ONE time (this means that for my ten email accounts on the iPhone i would cut down my entries from 90 to 70 which would be great).
then if there is some way to /port/ my email setting from my laptop to my desktop (assuming i am running the same OS on both) this would mean i would only have to enter an additional 80 entries instead of the 160 i have to do now.
am i missing some EXPORT utility in Mac Mail in Mountain Lion or - well - or is this software somehow not interested in making my life easier in 2013?
    THANKS

I tried the technique in that linked article with another account on my Mac. It works, but I think you'd be better off setting up the accounts. Here's what I needed to do (note changes with Mountain Lion).
Open you user/Library folder and copy the Mail folder to an external.
Open the containers folder and copy com.apple.mail folder to external (ML change)
On the destination Mac, select Get Info on each of the folders.
Unlock the padlock in the sharing and permissions section.
Click the Add button and add yourself. Set you to read/write.
Select you, then use the Gear menu to make you the owner.
Select any of the other users (except everyone) and delete them.
Copy the folders into you User/Library folder in the same locations they came from.
If you don't transfer the keychain, then you'll have to set the passwords for all the accounts, along with the SMTP server password, if set.
Your original plan I think was easier.

  • Mavericks Server mail relay custom port

After upgrading to Mavericks i cannot enter a custom port in the mail relay section of the Mail Service
in older versions i could enter:  mail.domain.com:587, but now i cannot save this setting.
Anyone an idea how to fix this ?
    Thanks in advance

It is about the mail service in OS10.9 SERVER I presume.
    I got the same problem.
Via the terminal I was able to set anther portnumber (port 26) instead of standard port 25.
Now I can have mail sent via a script I have running om my website, BUT
only mails to my own domain are sent.
All other mailaddresses do not get my script-generated mails.
Same config on OSX10.8 server2 works fine, it went wrong after upgrading to OSX10.9 Server 3.
    what can I do?

  • Mac Mail and blocked ports

    Hi,
I work in a not-very-Mac-friendly school district, but use a Mac anyway. We've figured out how to open the correct ports, etc. for internet use (via Network Preferences) but still can't access email (on an MS Exchange server) or any POP mail (Yahoo) or .mac mail through the mail program. I'm guessing it's something with a port somewhere that needs to be opened. Any thoughts on what it might be, or how to open ports on Mail?
Thanks for any help anyone might offer.
    -Widget

From the client side, you don't need to open any ports in Sys Prefs Sharing at all. Opening ports there is only for dealing with inbound traffic that you didn't initiate and weren't expecting as a response to something, i.e., if you were a mail or web server. But you're not a server, you're a client. So close 'em. Plus, in Mail.app (or any other application for that matter), those port numbers (like 25 or 587 or 465 for smtp, or 110 or 995 for pop, or 143 or 993 for imap) are at the destination mailserver, not your computer.
If you launched Terminal.app, "su {adminUserName}" and "sudo tcpdump -i en1" (en1 if wireless, en0, if ethernet cable) you will find that when you launch Mail and try to check mail or send mail, stuff from your computer is leaving your machine on a randomly chosen (by Mail.app) five-digit port number and it's at the destination server where these port numbers (25, 587, 465, 110, 995, 143, 993) have any meaning. Same holds true for all applications, e.g. Safari, port 80 refers to the web server, not what port on which you are sending out your browser request to the server. The (mail, web, other) server responds back from its port (25, 143, ..., 80, etc.) port to the random port number that your application chose.
Your problem, most likely, is that your IT Dept is blocking outbound traffic destined for any "foreign" host addresses at ports like 25 or 143, that are NOT the host addresses of your IT Dept's own mailservers. They would be blocking this at their firewall to the internet. My work's IT Secret Police does this. So unless they relax their firewall restrictions, you're going to have to do something like use your cellphone as a dialup modem to access those mail accounts, or use webmail (since they probably aren't blocking all http (destination server) port 80 traffic -- although they could be blocking traffic addressed to specific host addresses like yahoo.com/webmail).

  • Mail problem on port 110

I posted this on the Tiger mail forum, but there are so many postings there my question has already been buried, so I thought I'd try here.
I'm on Earthlink DSL. If my browser is closed and I open Mail 2.0.5, I get a message that I known is familiar to many:
There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Check the
settings for account "POP:[email protected]" or try again.
The server error encountered was: The server "pop.earthlink.net"
cannot be contacted on port 110.
What's odd is that if I open my browser, quit Mail and then reopen it, all is well. OR if I open my browser and wait a few minutes, Mail functions just as it should. The advice I've received from Earthlink hasn't been much help. They don't seem to understand that Mail does eventually connect. There's just this annoying delay.
Any ideas as to what's going on and how I might fix it?

Is your DSL connection already on? I know with my DSL and my eMac, I have the eMac wirelessly connecting to my DSL router. Normally I turn the airport card in my eMac off. If I turn it on and then go into a browser or other internet application, I fail to get a connection because the eMac is still "logging in", so to speak, with the router.
If you don't turn yours on/off manually, does tiger have a setting that automatically disconnects and reconnects you to the network connection?
Are you connecting wireless or via CAT-5 ethernet?

  • Why can I download Gmail, and not Mobile Me mail, through same port?

I can download email from my Gmail account without a problem at the office, where the appropriate "port" has been authorized to prevent the firewall from blocking it, but I cannot retrieve MobileMe mail: both are set to use exactly the same port and scrolling through the various setup options, I couldn't find any difference between the two.
I was wondering if someone could help work around this problem.
    Thank you!

They are both set by default at port 993, but what is strange is that Gmail works perfectly with exactly the same configuration! I tried deleting and resetting the account to no avail, for some reason it just won't connect to the server.

  • Mail smtp server port problem

I just changed isp provider and I am trying to use mail with my yahoo account. Everything seems to work except sending mail. I have talked with Yahoo and Adelphia and they can not figure it out. Adelphia suggested that my server port was blocked but I don't know how that could be because it was working with my last isp verizon. How do I unblock port 25 if that is the case or do you have any other suggestions?

Most, if not all ISPs block the use of SMTP servers that are outside of their network (or not provided by the ISP) on Port 25. Some ISPs allow the use of an authenticated SMTP server only that is outside of their network on Port 25 but some block its use regardless.
These restrictions are in place as part of an overall effort to prevent spam emanating from the ISP's domain.
You cannot unblock using Port 25 with an SMTP server that is outside of your ISPs network. If using an SMTP server that is outside of your ISP's network is blocked by your ISP on Port 25, only your ISP can do so.
Are you also accessing an email account and SMTP server in Mail that is provided by Adelphia and if so, are you able to send mail with your Adelphia email account?
If so, sounds like the person you talked to with Adelphia does not know what they are talking about.
    Something to try.
Go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts and under the Account Information tab for your Yahoo account preferences at the SMTP server selection, select the Server Settings button below.
Enter 587 in place of 25 in the Server Port field and when finished, select OK to save the changed setting.
Test if this resolves the problem. If not and you are accessing an email account and SMTP server in Mail provided by Adelphia and you are able to send messages with this account, select/use Adelphia's SMTP server to send mail with your Yahoo email account which is invisible to all recipients.
