Mail marks mail as read before I have viewed them

I'm using Mail for my gmail account (IMAP). When I receive a new email it is automatically set as 'read' and do not get a new message counter on the icon in the dock. This was not a problem when using POP (but IMAP works better for me so I'm keeping it).
Anyone able to tell me how to fix this?

then I don't know why this would be happening.
your Mail preferences may be corrupt. quit Mail and delete (or move to the desktop) the file ~/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist. ~ means your home directory. you can get to it by clicking on the house icon in the sidebar of any finder window or by going to /users/username.
then start Mail. you'll have to recreate all your email accounts so make sure you know all their settings. once recreated they will recognize their existing mailboxes. see if Mail behaves after that.

  • Using Mail - items being marked as read before I have read them

    Hi
How do I stop Mail marking an item as read as soon as I move the cursor away from it in the ail listing? Just because it is shown in the preview pane does not mean I have read it yet.
In Outlook I can change a setting so that items are not marked a s read until I double click them to open them fully and read them - how do I do the same in Mail?
Also if I delete an item from the list, the cursor moves UP to the previous item (I have ordered the list so that newest mail is at the top. I then start reading from the top down..). Can I change a setting somewhere to move the cursor the other way after processing an email?
    Many thanks

The only way to have it not be marked as read is to turn the preview pane off (then you double-click each message to open/read it).

  • Is there a way to have my e-mail messages stay unopened on my computer after I have viewed them with the blackberry

Not sure if there is a setting on the blackberry but my work e-mail(s) will also be sent to my blackberry. After I have viewed them on the blackberry, if I go to my desttop computer, the e-mails will already have been opend (not bold). Just wondering if there a setting that can be changed or should I contact our IT dept.

The app that I am using came on the Samsung tv. It is called mediaplayer. I have updated the firmware on the tv but it did not change the app or update it. The same thing happens. It recognizes the photos but not the videos. My friend also has a Samsung tv (differnet model) and I connected the touch to his and the same thing. He has a Motorolla Droid and when he connects it to his tv via a USB cable it does recognize his videos so I imagine that his Droid records videos with the mp4 extension.
So I am back to my original question. Is there a way to make the mp4 extension as the default when recording videos on the touch?

  • Mail mark as not read

    Hi all.
Pretty new on Mac environment so I apologize for any boring question.
I'm mainly facing two matters at customer locations.
So far I understand MAIL does not support this feature.
I found out truepreview app which helps in solving this cust request.
Even if still some open point. Infact, if canceling a mail from inbox, MAIL opens same mail in paperbin.
Which could cause some security exposures, if I'm not wrong.
Anyone can provide me with help ?
    Thanks in advance
    Luca

if canceling a mail from inbox, MAIL opens same mail in paperbin.
Which could cause some security exposures, if I'm not wrong.
You're wrong... if I understand you correctly. Viewing a message in Mail will never run malicious scripts on your machine or anything else like that. It is not a security problem. Just be sure you have "Display remote images in HTML messages" turned off in Mail's viewing preferences, which could be used by spammers to verify that you have opened their e-mail.

  • I don't want to mark emails as read when I have only seen them in preview. How can I do this, so they are only marked as read when actually opened?

every other email client I have used lets me mark a message as read only when I actually double click and read it. and not just when I preview it.

I will, thanks. It looks like I am keener to use your product than you are for me to use it.

  • Mail marks my bcc: copies (sent to myself) as junk

Mail marks mail sent to myself as bcc: copies as Junk mail
I always send a copy of outbound email to myself as a bcc: copy.  Mail marks these as Junk mail every time no matter what I do.  Is there a way to configure a copy to my own mailbox that will not trigger junk mail?

It really has nothing to do with the Email client you are using to send Mail. It does have everything to do with the Recipients Junk/Spam filter they are using. Mac Mail is not flagging your outgoing mail as Junk. No email program does that. It get flagged as Junk by the program the recipient is using.
That is unless you are sending these emails in bulk with many address in the To field. Some email programs see that and think Hey this must be Spam as it is being sent to X number of email addresses at the same time.

  • Unread mail marked "READ" when opening Mail

I have about fifteen mail messages from a few weeks ago marked "unread". However, when I open my mail box all of today's mail gets marked "read' before I scroll over or read any messages. Any ideas?

I HAD a blackberry downloading my .mac email. It was marking them as opened for some reason - no way to change the seeting.

  • Mail will not mark messages as read after being opened

Mail will not mark messages as read after being opened... the blue dot will NOT go away, no matter how many times I open the e-mail.
It's a simple pop account. I AM able to mark messages read with the message menu item (mark as read.) I also have nothing synced with it, no iPhone, no IMAP accounts, no .mac account, nothing.
But this is a real pain to have to do manually, when it used to happen automatically upon clicking the e-mail, it opening in a window to read, and then closing it.
All was working fine up until the 10.5.7 update. I hoped the 10.5.8 update would fix the problem, but no change. Everything else is working perfectly (I do the permissions repair/disk verify procedure before and after each update.)
Can't seem to find anyone else with this problem in here either, through search or just going through hundreds of messages.

    Okay, then lets try this:
    1. Select all your messages in the Inbox; then use the contextual menu or the Message > Mark menu to mark them all as Read.
    2. Quit Mail.
    3. Go to Home/Library/Mail and delete the Envelope Index file.
    4. Restart Mail, wait for the index to rebuild and retrieve any new email you might have, and see if the problem contineus. Hopefully it will not.

  • Marking Mail as Read

How do I stop mail marking as Read when using Autoview?   I want to actually double click and open the message before it is marked as Read.
    OldCroc

You don't, that's just the way it works. Mail is designed so that you don't have to double-click to open a message... just click it and read. However, you could always close the message view pane, by clicking the dividing line between it and the message list and dragging it all the way to the right edge of the window. You'll lose the ability to "preview" messages, but otherwise it should then behave the way you want.

  • Mail marking new items as read itself

HHave recently upgraded iPhone to iOS7, and using mail app for Gmail with imap, noticing that a lot of new mail is coming in marked as read, how can I stop new items being marked as read before onset them?

Hello bgdesign and welcome to the Palm forums.
Lots of people, I'm sure are looking for this feature.  I've asked for the ability to multiselect messages too.  I don't work for Palm/HP so I have no idea when this feature might be coming to Palm webOS.
As a work around, you should be able to mark messages read in your email account when you access it from a PC and the update should sync down if you are using a Google or IMAP server.  If you are using a POP email server, I don't think that work around will work.

  • Can u mark messages as "read" in iPhone after reading them in apple mail?

As the title says. I'd like to find a way to have all my emails marked as "read" in my iphone mail after I've read them in my apple mail or vice versa. I belong to an email mailing list that I receive about 30 emails every day on that I'd like to not show up in my iphone but they're sent to my main account that I have linked to my iphone. Aside from just that email blast. I'd like to not have to go in and automatically delete or open then back out of all the emails that I've already read. And I dont want to delete them cause most of them I need.
    Any help?

Got it, I did have to disable POP because my Gmail account in my apple mail was set up as a POP mail. I then had to create a new account with the same email address and it set itself up as an IMAP account. Was super easy. Now I have all sorts of folders for it too even. Only problem is, I cant rename the mailbox for some reason.
Anyone have any bright ideas on that? I want to rename the mailbox in my apple mail. Right now its just called "gmail"

  • IPhone Mail Mark as Read/Mark as Unread PLEASE ALREADY!

Please send feedback to Apple to have then add the following long overdue functionality:
    Mark Read
    Mark Unread
    Mark All Read
    Mark All Unread

Thanks, CT, but I really want Mail to NEVER mark anything as read automatically because I often open a message and skim it to assess its urgency, then leave it for later.  Your suggestion would at least mean that a message isn't marked read just because the cursor happened to land on it, but what a nuisance to have to turn off the preview pane and do all that extra clicking when all I need is for Apple to think for five seconds about how people actually work, and to understand that we need to control our own activities, not have some anonymous coder make those decisions for us based on ... what?  No research, no analysis, no thinking - just the first notion that came into his or her head.  Sorry to rant - it really does cause me genuine stress.
I've looked at various alternative mail/calender/task clients, but can't find one that syncs with other devices.  Or one that allows you to attach a reminder (with date and alarm options) to a message.  I have Mail Hub and Fantastical installed.  I just need one more plug-in that controls the read/unread behaviour properly and my life would suddenly be manageable and tolerable.  It seems like so little to ask.  I hope somebody else knows of such a plug-in.
Not being a coder and a fairly recent Mac convert, I know nothing about Apple Script, but I did wonder if the behaviour could be controlled with a script or an amendment somewhere else.  All suggestions welcome - and extra gratitude for 'for dummies' explanations.

There is a bug in Mail triggered by receiving a password-protected PDF as an attachment. According to reports, the bug is fixed in OS X 10.8.5.

  • Mail marking read copy of email in other account

Mail program on Mountain Lion Imac is marking read copies of email in another account which the email was both sent to. Main account is AOL for me and assistant uses gmail account which we both look at. If we are both sent an email and it is read in the AOL account on the Mountain Lion Imac the program marks the email read in the gmail account and the assistant doesn't think it is new. Marking it Unread works as long as the mail isn't read in the other account. This doesn't happen with IOS 6 phone or older operating systems. Can't see any preferences for this.

Are you using the same computer and the same user account? If so, try setting up a new user to separate the Mail accounts. You can then set up fast user switching.
    From System Preferences Help.
Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.
