Mail messages window closing

The messages viewer on Mail closes immediately when I open mail. If I quit mail  and re open it it seems to be okay. Any suggestions?

It still happens and it really gets boring. I have Mail 8.0 (1990.1). It happens from any folder selected: Inbox, Sent, Smart Inboxes...
How could such a bug remain undetected and not fixed asap? Maybe it's a plot from Apple to get us to ditch Mail and instead buy Unibox, Sparrow or Airmail from the Mac App Store so they get more $$$ commissions?

  • Mail messages window disappear when searching

    Hello,
I'm using Mail 8.0 on OS X 10.10 (14A389). With French language and localisation. This is something I already noticed in Public Beta.
I have my Sent folder selected (maybe it would happen with another). I start typing something in the search box. Then the whole main messages window disappear immediately. But Mail thinks it's still visible. Even search suggestions continues to show. Typing cmd+0 to hide/show the messages window does not help.
I have to restart Mail to get my messages window back.
This happens randomly. After restarting Mail I can search as usual without the window disappearing. But sometimes later it will happen again.
Anyone encounters this too? Is this known from Apple? Any better temporary workaround than restarting Mail?

  • Mac Mail message windows

I am using Mac Mail 5.2 on a MacBook Pro with OS 10.7.4.  If I open a  folder in On My Mac, it shows the mail under the headings From  Subject   Date Received.  Is there any way I can insert To into the headings,so I know to whom the e-mails were sent?

Sounds to me like it is.  The mail apps on any OS are just slaves to the delivery by the mail servers they are configured to use.  When the servers deliver the stuff the mail apps just receive the stuff and tell their user about it.  Sure it's buffered somewhere, but not for a day, unless of course, you configure you mail program to only check mail once a day or the servers themselves are broken and can't deliver the stuff (it happens).

  • Mail "New Message" window retreats to background after drag and drop attachment from Finder to Mail "New Message", click, and Finder window stays in foreground even when not in focus

Hi, I'm surprised I can't quickly find if anyone else is having this issue. For me it has been going on since Lion on my 13" MacBook Pro 2011 and it's still persisting in Mavericks, and even still now that I've "downgraded" to a 15" MacBook Pro 2010 with Mavericks.  The behavior is odd and difficult to explain concisely. Basically, when I want to add an attachment to Mail, I'll Cmd+Tab over to Finder click and drag and Cmd+Tab back to Mail, and drop the attachment. At first it looks fine, but when I click in the New Message window where I just dropped the attachment, to move the cursor, it retreats to the background and the Mail Main Window comes to the foreground. Then, if I click on that, the Finder window that I just used comes to the foreground. Sometimes if I switched to another app before going to Finder to select the drag and drop, that other app window will appear in the foreground instead. If I click on the other app window that is now in the foreground, then the Finder window that was last used will come to the foreground. The only thing that seems to fix this switch-a-roo effect is Cmd+Tab-ing back and forth a few times, or click on the window "frame" at the top to move the window around.
The way to prevent this is to have my Mail Message window visible in the foreground side by side with the Finder window when the drag and drop occurs (this is a tedious extra step if mulitple windows are open, or to use the add attachment command in the menu within Mail. But it sure is annoying buggy behavior.
    Thanks
    Daniel

Yep, I get exactly the same thing when using Thunderbird mail client on my 2011 iMac running Lion. I've been putting up with it for at least a year, maybe longer.
For me it appeared to start after a Thunderbird update, so I figured that was the cause and couldn't find a solution at the time. However I've now noticed it starting to happen in Apple Motion 4 when dragging files from Finder into a DropZone in my animations. Motion remains the active program but the Finder window sits on top until I Cmd-tab out to a third open program (ie not Finder) and back to Motion again.
This is the first indicator I've had that it's an OS X issue.
Be great to find a solution as D&D is by far my preferred way of adding attachments to emails and similar tasks.

  • Outlook New Message Window from Javascript

    Hi,
From a hyperlink, i can bring up a new mail message window by simply using the <mailto> tag.
What if i wanna do the same thing on click of a button....
onclick event can be handled in javascript but how can we invoke a tag from there ???

    document.location="mailto:[email protected],[email protected]?cc=[email protected],[email protected]&bcc=[email protected]&subject=stuff";

    Hi, try this...
If nothing is showing in the Toolbar at top, click the little gray oval at top right.
Right click or Control+click on the Toolbar, choose Customize Toolbar, drag the Send button to the Toolbar.

  • Mail can't create a new message window ...?

    Hi,
Mail.app on my machine has been having a strange issue the past few days. Twice now, it has lost the ability to create a new message editing window.
If I click the new message button, or select "New Message" from the file menu, or click the "Reply" button on an existing message, etc. but no new message window ever appears. Quitting Mail.app and restarting, all the new message windows suddenly appear and everything is fine again ... until the next time.
Anyone else ever had Mail.app lose the ability to create new message editing windows like this?
    Machine: Powerbook G4 15" (Oct 2005, 1.67GHz)
    OS: 10.5.8
    Mail: 3.6 (936)
    All software updates applied
    Thanks!

That worked.  Now, why didn't I think of that!?

  • Opening new Mail message in the main window

    Hello,
When I get a new mail message notification banner in the right top corner of the screen and click on it, this message is opened in a popup window. I want it to be opened in the main window, like it does when you click on a message if you are already in the Mail app.
Is this possible? I can't find any option to change this in System Preferences or Mail settings.
    Thanks!

If the Mail app is frozen then have you tried closing the app via the iPad's multitasking bar and seeing if it works properly when you re-open Mail ?
iOS 7 : double-click the home button to open the taskbar, and then swipe or drag the Mail app's screen from there up and off the top of the screen to close it, and click the home button to close the taskbar.
iOS 6 and below : from the home screen (i.e. not with Mail 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Mail app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
If that doesn't fix it then you could try a soft-reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Mail wont let me open new message window

    Hello,
So lately I have noticed a bug, I believe, in mail. At random times when I click on the new message icon nothing happens. However, if I close mail completely and reopen it, the new message window shows up. Any idea why this is happening? Thanks for the help

SUSSED THE NEW MAIL MESSAGE PROBLEM!!!
I am delighted to say that I resolved this one myself... Its on an IMAC 20", which I had also hooked up to a second display (although not switched on). What happened is that I turned to system Preferences, went to Displays, and changed the settings in the arrangement tab. This I thought would help, as perhaps the New Message window had been created, but was displayed somewhere else I could not see, and Guess what, there they all were! They had been elongated after the update to Leopard, and subsequently, were all sat there on the 'other' display.
I hope his helps with others with the same problem. (thats also why I did not have the problem on the laptop)
    Good luck to all.

  • Mail messages open in new window

Recently when a notification comes in for Mail, if I click on the banner notification or the notication in Notification Centre, the new mail message opens in a new window instead of just going to the mail app and showing me the message there.
As far as I am aware I have not changed any settings. Could anyone help me change this back please?
    Many thanks.

Don't forget to turn off banner notification for Mail in System Preferences!

  • Mail messages open in small window

I am using Mail 6.6 on OSX 10.8.5.
When I open an email in a seperate window, I only get the header section of the email, and it always seems to open in the lower left of the desktop.  I am able to move the message around the screen, and I am able to re-size the message window.
When I do this, subsegquent messages open fully. Then when I print a message, the next message I open is shrunk and appears in the lower left hand corner of the desktop.
    Is there a solution?
    Thanks!

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before (triple-click, copy, and paste):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Mail messages open in small, truncated window . . .

I'm running OSX 10.8 on a MacBook Pro Retina. When I click on a Mail message on the list, it opens in a small truncated window at the bottom of my screen. I have to move and resize virtually every piece of email to read it. Is there a fix? Thank you!

I am having a similar issue on my MacBook Air.  On occassion, a mail message will open at about 1/3 of normal size in the bottom left corner of the screen.  It is not consistent, and there doesn't appear to be any pattern to the type of email that causes this.  It happens with both of my email accounts.
The only 2 solutions I've found:
    1) Resize the window which will sometimes correct the problem, but it generally reoccurs shortly thereafter.
    2) Close and reopen Mail.
    Any permanent solutions?

  • Can't open new message window or reply window in mail

I just started having issues where I cannot open a new message window or a reply window. I also cannot open a new Note or To Do. I restarted, zapped the pram (8 times), and was going to trash the plist but couldn't find it. Does anyone know if there is a plist for mail. Any other suggestions would be welcome.

Hi ulua & welcome to discussions...
Try this - find the /Library/Preferences folder in your user/Home folder and then locate and delete this file:
    com.apple.mail.plist
*Caution* - doing this may clear your account settings so be sure to note those first in the event you are required to reconfigure, etc.
