Mail migration to Lion Server

Well, I've searched the forum and don't see what I'm looking for, so I'm going to ask before I start but proceed anyhow since I don't see anything to indicate anyone has done this yet.
I have 10.6.8 XServe running Mail, iCal, Web Services, iChat, OD (replica). My original collaboration server crashed - so much so that Apple gave me two (2 - count 'em) Mac Mini servers to replace my big beautiful XServe. Here's the wrinkle - since I couldn't be down I took the hard drives (at the recommendation of Tech Support) and put them in a spare server I happened to have (bought two servers at the same time - identical hardware configurations. Everything SEEMS to be working except the RAID array drops one of the hard disk drives when I reboot. Right now it's flashing amber on the front panel. I fully expect this server to fail as well.
I think the Minis are more than capable of running the collaboration services I need. So far the only thing I've done with the Minis is create a Mirrored RAID HDD with the two 750GB HDDs that came with the Mini. I've installed all the updates to Lion to date.
I have been told by Apple that all I need to do is boot my XServe into Target Disk Mode and then migrate the data over from the XServe Drive.
MY QUESTION IS:  does anyone know if the Migration Assistant would do the same thing. I'm thinking it WOULD.
Anyhow that's what I'm going to try. IF, however, anyone HAS done it, I'd appreciate any tips before I do it.
All my collaboration data is being stored on the RAID array on the XServe. The XServe has a SSHDD that was running the boot partition, but I disabled that and moved the boot partition to the array because of the "Phantom Disk" problem you get when the SSHDD boots up faster than the RAID array (had I only known when I bought the XServe - great concept - TERRIBLE implementation).
Anyhow, I plan to do this over Columbus Day weekend (or whatever they call it now) - so I'll report back. My Apple Engineer says this is a non-destructive process so if it doesn't work, I can always go back to the old XServe. Then I'll have to figure out some manual way to move the data over. I'm hoping it would be as simple as just copying the data over.
However, the XServe is also an OD replica. I don't know if all that will get migrated over as well. But, we'll see.
Thanks for any tips anyone might have before I do this.
I'm actually pretty stoked about trying this...stay tuned...

Probably the simplest approach is the one I just detailed here https://discussions.apple.com/message/16207870#16207870
Basically it is possible (unofficially) to run 10.6.8 on the new Mac mini, so you could clone your entire setup across to the Mac mini via FireWire Target Disk Mode.

  • SL Mail store to Lion Server

    Hi,
I've done a fresh install of Lion on a separate drive. I'm trying to work out how you import the old mail store to Lion Server. Has anyone been successful with this?
    Thanks

There's a walkthrough of how to theorhetically do this in the "Upgrading and Migrating" manual; but it never worked for me at all.  (And migration clearly doesn't at all either.)  Wish I could be more help, I have some tickets open but zero response yet.

  • Users report no email messages after migration from Lion Server to a clean Mavericks Server with Migration Assistant

We have a Mac Mini server running Lion Server.
We bought a new Mac Mini server and installed OS X Mavericks and the Server app onto it.
We then ran Migration Asssitance on the Mavericks machine and migrated from the Lion server in target disk mode.
The migration seemed to run OK and all the user accounts seem to be working, however users are reporting that there are no email messages in their mailboxes.
Confirmed this behaviour by adding their accounts to mail (via IMAP) on a separate laptop.
Did we miss something? Is there an extra step to move the email service data?
Any insights would be grately appreciated.
    Many thanks, Tom.

If your saved emails did not come across properly in the Migration, you can always export the mail from the old computer and import it into the new computer manually:

  • Where can I configure mail quotas in Lion Server?

One (minor) problem for me, after upgrading from SnowLeopard Server to Lion Server is the fact, that I can't figure out where to administer the mail quotas. So far I have just managed to find the "Server Admin". Here, under Mail -> Maintenance I can see the quotas and under Mail->Settings->Quotas I can enable quota warnings and edit them. But I can't find a place to configure individual quotas. The quota settings from SnowLeopard server have been migrated and are still in place. But how should I change them. It used to be in WorkgroupManager. But in WorkgroupManager this item is gone.
    Many thanks for your replies.

    Followng up a bit,
In looking into OD records on my Snow Leopard Server via the Inspector in WGM, I see the following attribute for one of my users for whom I've set a 1024mb mail quota.
    Name:
    MailAttriute
    Value:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <dict>
              <key>kAPOPRequired</key>
              <string>APOPNotRequired</string>
              <key>kAltMailStoreLoc</key>
              <string></string>
              <key>kAttributeVersion</key>
              <string>Apple Mail 1.0</string>
              <key>kAutoForwardValue</key>
              <string></string>
              <key>kIMAPLoginState</key>
              <string>IMAPAllowed</string>
              <key>kMailAccountLocation</key>
              <string>[redacted].[redacted].org</string>
              <key>kMailAccountState</key>
              <string>Enabled</string>
              <key>kPOP3LoginState</key>
              <string>POP3Allowed</string>
              <key>kUserDiskQuota</key>
              <string>1024</string>
    </dict>
I'm wondering if manually entering this attribute, and an XML value with at least the kUserDiskQuota key included will be all I need to do to implement per-user quotas in Lion Server.
If I get time, I will test and report back.

  • Mail rejected by Lion Server

Upgraded a test server from snow leopard to lion and have problems with all incoming mail being rejected by the server.
    Rejected mail always reads:
Reason: Server rejected MAIL FROM address.
Diagnostic code: smtp;530 5.7.0 Must issue a STARTTLS command first
I've searched for hours and see that there are a couple of explanations.  With initial installation I used a self-signed SSL certificate and then removed it according to this discussion.  https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3339935?start=0&tstart=0
Also disable spam filters and greylisting.
Reinstalled once and relaized I had the DNS pointing to port 443 and thought that might be the problem and changed DNS with a fresh install.  Every time I reinstall Lion Server from scratch going back to the SL install disk and after install under server hardware settings it alwasy initially reads SSL certs for mail (IMAP, POP and SMTP).
Last install I zeroed out drive and reinstalled and still after install it showed certificates for all mail services.
Can't figure out where it could be finding settings to reinstall certificates after they have been completely deleted.
    Sending mail works fine.
    Any suggestsion?  Thanks.

You don't want to do that. In my opinion, smtp should only be accessible via an encrypted connections, ie. TLS. It can represent a security risk and is against best practice.
I have started, building my Lion Server from scratch, rather than migrating it.Things so far seem to be promising. I might be finished by the time Apple releases Mountain Lion Server...

  • Mail features in Lion Server

I work for a small company that only has three machines; one Mac and two PCs. Currently we're using gmail as our email provider.
Long story short, we bought an all-in-one printer that has a scan to email feature. However, the printer only provides "Login/Plain" SMTP authentication, and gmail requires SSL or TLS authentication to send and receive emails. We're looking at a few different possibilites on how to get this fixed, which lead me here.
Is it possible to set up email accounts on Lion Server that will accept emails without SSL or TLS authentication? Will Lion server still work well with the two PCs we have? And will I be able to continue to use my iMac for the design work I do now if I load Lion Server on it?
I don't mind recommending the purchase, I just want to make sure it will solve our issues before doing so. Thanks in advance for any help!

Is it possible to set up email accounts on Lion Server that will accept emails without SSL or TLS authentication?
Yes. That's the default. You have to take extra steps to support SSL/TLS.
Will Lion server still work well with the two PCs we have?
Yes. email is pretty ubiquitous nowadays, and even PCs can connect to a standard UNIX mail server.
And will I be able to continue to use my iMac for the design work I do now if I load Lion Server on it?
Yes. Running server adds several background services to your machine, but if you're just running mail it won't be noticeable.
I don't mind recommending the purchase, I just want to make sure it will solve our issues before doing so.
There are many other issues involved in running your own mail server.
Are you planning/hoping to use this server for all your mail? including email coming in to your users?
If so you're going to run into issues with accounts, static IP addresses, reverse DNS and the like.
On the other hand, if you're just using this to relay your users' mail over to Gmail then it's not such a big deal. You will, however, need to get under the hood to configure gmail's TLS authentication, since the GUI doesn't provide this functionality - it can be done, but it's not a one-click option.

  • Mail aliases in Lion Server

I have two servers that are both running mail.  I'd like to be able to have them back each other up.  If an email comes into server 1 and server 2 (where account is) is not available, I'd like Server 1 to hold that mail until Server 2 comes back on line.
Previously, in OSX Server, in Workgroup Manager, you could specify a forwarding address for a user and this worked great. In Lion Server, there is no such provision.
So, I edited the /etc/aliases file to add an alias to each such user. I run newaliases and restart the mail server.  If I ( with an account on a given server) send an email from mail.app through that server, it properly forwards it to the right server.  If there is an incoming email from somewhere else on the internet, then it won't forward it to the correct server but simply rejects it.
I suppose I could go through and create a complete set of duplicate accounts and then go to the web client and specify the redirect through a filter but that would be a total pain.
    What am I doing wrong?
    J.

    Hi
"Previously, in OSX Server, in Workgroup Manager, you could specify a forwarding address for a user and this worked great. In Lion Server, there is no such provision."
If I've understood you correctly that's not strictly true. There's a number of ways you can do this. You could consider using WebMail or the command line:

  • Sending external emails thru Mail relay in Lion Server

    Hi,
I've setup Lion Server with a Mail Relay for outgoing emails and currently paying for x amount of emails per day.
Does Lion Server send all outgoing emails through the relay, or is it smart enough to know that internal emails (on the same subdomain) or emails generated by web apps on the server itself do not go through the relay because it can deliever it directly into the mailbox that resides on itself?
We generate a lot of emails internally, but only a handful to external addresses.
I'm looking for information about this but I havne't found anything yet.
    Please let me know.
    Thanks!

The mail server first checks the domain of any recipient. If it's a local domain (i.e. one that the server handles) then it just passes that message to the user's mailbox.
It's only non-local domains that need passing upstream through your relay, so you can send as many internal emails as you like - they won't touch your relay server.

  • Archiving Mail on Mountain Lion Server with MailSteward or Other?

Anyone here successfully archiving mail for multiple user accounts on Mountain Lion Server without spending a bunch of dough?
From poking around a bit I guess mail is in /Library/Server/Mail/Data, but I don't think MailSteward can pull from there, dovecot daemon stuff that is over my head.
Interested in solutions short of going to Kerio Connect, which looks to provide the archiving functionality I need (and maybe also lets users change their own passwords, which would also be nice).

One thing that jumps out from your brief description of the problem is a bug in the persent iteration of Lion Server that occurs when the "Dedicate system resources to server services" box is checked (or, honestly, when it's unchecked too -- read on).  This is located within Server.app.  in the left pane, select your machine under the hardware section.  The second tab, settings, contains this option.  I'd try either ticking or unticking the box and then restarting and then trying to start those services again.  Though the bug was initially reported as related to this similar problem (the one you describe) occurring when this box is checked, I've found that toggling between on to off, or off to on (depending on the current state) and then restarting, seems to help get things going again.  Sometimes this has to be done twice.  As well, until Apple issues a fix for these Server.app related problems, it's best, once you get your server configured, to keep from opening Server.app when possible.  Just opening it seems to cause problems.  One example of this is checking the mail quota box and entering a value.  It seems to stick fine, but when Server.app is opened again, the box is unchecked once again.  This one happens every time.

  • Password problem after migrating to Mountain Lion Server

    Hello everyone,
Yesterday, I migrated our Lion Server to Mountain Lion Server. Everything seemed to work fine. Except since this morning, none of the network user cannot connect to their calendar, reminders, and wiki. They can connect to their account and to their mails. The following line appears multiple times in ApplePasswordServer.Error.log:
    Aug 16 2012 16:52:50 700250us    client response doesn't match what we generated
It seems that only web services are concerned (vpn, mobile accounts, and mails are working). My initial guess is that the hash computed on the basis of the user password is not computed on the same way on the client machine (which is running Mountain Lion by the way) and on the server. On the other hand, this would be very surprising, since all this stuff is based on standards and unlikely to have changed since Lion.
I tried to create a new "Test" user. Even this new user, created after the migration, cannot connect to its calendar, etc. I also tried to reset my user password using the Server App. It makes no difference, the same lines appear in the logs.
Is anyone experiencing a similar problem ? Does anyone have a clue of what to try next ?
    Thanks a lot !

    I found out the following:
After looking at the contents of the password server database using the slot numbers of several user accounts, it seems that all users where WEBDAV-DIGEST authentication is failing, have two entries for the digest method "*cmusaslsecretDIGEST". This is obviously wrong. All users who can authenticate successfully have only one such entry.
Deleting and recreating the user account has no effect. In fact, updating the password server with a new entry may actually trigger this error. It could be that all users where this is failing have changed their passwords after the server was updated to Mountain Lion.
It would be interesting to know if you also see duplicate entries for "*cmusaslsecretDIGEST" in the database. You can display a password server record via the user account's slot number (in your example, the 0xd6ace...) using the command
    sudo mkpassdb -dump <slot-number>
At the end of the record dump, you should see 10 digest entries with their method identifiers.
