Mail mishandling VIP mail

I've made a lot of use of VIP categories in Apple Mail since Snow Leopard. However, I have several problems repeatedly.
1. Sometimes, a VIP has a mistaken count. For example UPS Mychoice "folder" has a count of (1), when I open that folder and look at it,
there are six messages total in their and all have been read. But the count is still 1. I have other combinations of the same thing, where the
count displayed does not agree with unread messages. Usually this is a case when all have been read but the count is > 0. To work around this
I have right clicked the folder and selected Mark All Messages as Read. This does not change the count and read status of the messages. Usually
Mark all as read works fine. For example, I have certain VIP folders that accumulate a large number of message more than I want to read. Usng
Mark As Read removes the count nicely
I have had a non-zero count on VIP folders in which there are no messages at all, read or not.
Anyone else see this or know what might the issue might be?

First, select sender(s) as VIPs. Then the VIP category will appear.
To select a sender as a VIP, open an email from that sender, then hover over their name and a star icon will appear to the left. Click the star, and that sender will be set as a VIP (and the category will appear in the pane on the left).

I deleted emails from VIPs and didn't realise they would be deleted from my Mailbox. VIPs does't appear in Mail on Time Machine. Is there any way I can restore the deleted emails?

You can't download pictures from iCloud by logging into icloud.com. If you deleted pictures from camera roll AND photo stream, the only possibility is preforming a restore from an iCloud backup, assuming the backup has the pictures in it. (Many users have been unable to restore and get back their pictures.)
If the restore doesn't have all the pictures, then they are gone.
In the future, use photo stream to sync photos from an iPhone to a computer, then copy the photos on the computer from the photo stream album into a permanent album. Photo stream pics stay there only for 30 days, and only up to 1000 photos are stored. Don't use photo stream as a storage medium, it's only for copying photos from one device to another. Always copy (either via USB cable or photo stream) to a computer and then move to an album.

How to get rid of VIP mail box added version 6 ?

I just updated my iPod to 6.0, and there are two things I do not like about it:
First, it added a "VIP" mail box which I don't want. How do I get rid of it?
It also added a "passbook" app or something, which I don't want and don't need. I've religated it to the "not used much" folder, but I wish they wouldn't add it without asking me or at least let me take it off my device.
Shame on you Apple. For the first time since I've had my iPod I'm feeling messed with and I don't like it.

Try a reset: hold down the home button along with the power button until you see the Apple, then let go.

Ipad mail in ios 6 will not delete correctly from VIP mailbox

After upgrading my ipad to ios 6, which added the VIP feature. I then added some of my contacts as VIP's, however when I attempt to delete the email after reading, the entire mail app crashes.

consistently crashed the app if I try to delete a VIP email after reading it, and DOES NOT delete it. If I go back into VIP and select the message, and delete it, it crashed again, without deleting, ad infinitum
I have to nav out of the VIP folder and select the message in the regular folder, then it deletes correcly, and does not crash.
This is very annoying, and hope they fix it soon as my regular routine is to delete the 90% of email that is of no value after reading.

Missing VIP mail folder

VIP Mail folder missing after upgrade 10.9.5

With Mail quit....
Go to the User's Library folder. This folder is hidden by default. To unhide: Select the Finder in the Dock. Under Go in the Menu bar > hold down the Option key and you’ll see the Library.
• Go to Mail folder.
Select the V2 > MailData folder.
Delete any files in MailData with envelope in the name. (should be 3)
Open Mail.
Mail will reindex your files.

Missing Mail VIP folder

Mail is now missing the VIP folder along with the sub-items listing my VIPs. Anyone else have this problem? Just updated to 10.10.3 supplemental upgrade.

Try re-indexing the mailboxes. This can take awhile if you have a lot of mail.

Mail VIP list not showing "all VIPs" or useable in Smart mailboxes

I thought I'd give the Mail app a go again in Yosemite after abandoning it when it all went horribly wrong in Mavericks.
I can't get the VIP list to work properly though. I have VIPs and I can open the VIP list to select an individual VIP (I have about 50) but I want to click on the main VIPs label to see mails from all VIPs. Specifically, I want to limit to the view to Inbox Only, so I can see all messages from any VIP that is currently in my inbox. The problem is, no mail shows when clicking on the main VIPs label, only when I click on individual VIP names. Also, if I create a Smart mailbox, using Sender is VIP, nothing works (no mails are found). I can still select multiple individual VIPs out of the list and that will show them all, but it's a pain and just doesn't seem like the right thing to do. in iOS, tapping on the VIP inbox, lists all mails from VIPs, why not on the mac too?
Anyone else having the same problems?
As a further clue. When you click on one mail box to another, the list of mails instantly changes to show the mails in the new mailbox. This is true if you click from an individual mailbox to the 'group' one. But, if I click from any mail box (that is showing mail) to the mail VIPs group, then the mails from the previous mailbox are still shown, ie the view doesn't re-fresh. I have to click on the main VIPs tab twice to get the mail list to refresh (which then refreshes to an empty list due to the problem above).
This is driving me mad!

I have worked this out for myself and fixed the problem.
It's down to a bug in Mail (or possibly Spotlight). I had a VIP with an apostrophe in her email address which Mail wasn't handling properly and it was causing the search query to fail. Removing that contact from the VIP list fixed my issue.
Technically, what's happening is that the code wasn't "escaping" this special character and that was causing a syntax error in the search query.

iCloud will only sync devices on the same account. There is no way around having to purchase more storage, unfortunately for you.

Why don't VIP names show up in the Mailboxes column on Mail for Yosemite?

I added a couple of new colleagues to my VIP list in mail yesterday after installing Yosemite. The colleagues were added to the VIP list, but their names are not displayed in the Mailboxes column. Everything about the VIP functionality works -- the messages I expect to find when clicking on the un-named stars in the list are the right messages. Only the name label is missing:
I've tried the obvious things: quitting and relaunching Mail, logging out/logging back in, restarting my MacBook.
This is an Office365 Exchange email account.
Anyone else see this problem or have suggestions for how to get the names attached to the stars in the VIP mailbox list?

You backed the phone up to iCloud, but what were you syncing the contacts with? Apparently, it wasn't iCloud...

Hi I did same, but funny enough its putting email from all inbox only. I have lots of mails in subfolder thats not going there.
When i go to subfolder i can see small littile start in the VIP people but not shoiwng in the VIP mailbox.
Is there any workaround to fix this or its bug needs fixing.

Combining multiple VIP addresses in Mail

Is there a way to combine multiple email addresses under the same VIP in Mountain lion's Mail? I have 4 or 5 email addresses for a contact and as such have 5 different VIP inboxes for this person when one would be perfect.
Any help would be great.

This solved it for me: before, two VIPs with same name, but was same person with two different email addresses; added both email addresses to that person in Contacts, restarted mail, and voila now one entry in VIP list for this guy. Thanks ddarby08!

Where is the VIP function in mail?

I just updated and am unable to make a person a VIP (there is no star next to them that I can "check"). I was able to set my mail notifications so that only people who are VIPs get sent to the notifications bar. Is this one of those features that hasn't been fully released yet?

in the mail message you have received
send your cursor to the left of the senders name and a STAR will appear subtly...click on it and you will then notice a folder appear on left side under mailboxes
labeled VIP...that sender will apear in that folder any future mailings will land there also

VIPs is inactive in mail.app

After the last update(OSX 10.10.2) VIPs is greyed out and inactive in mail.app and can't access the messages filed under it. However vips working on iCloud.com and iOS8. Any ideas what might be the problem?

I think the search in mail is busted due to an upgrade issue. I couldn't search the "Entire Message" and get results. To, From and Subject worked. I saw a post here http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6765153&#6765153 about re-installing leopard. I did a "Preserve Network and Users install, see here for docs http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301270 This finally worked where nothing else did. It's a real P.I.T.A. but it worked. I would be interested to know if all the search problems have been with upgrade installs.
