Mail missing after Rebuild

Hi All,
Having problem with the Mail.app
All my mails were missing after I ran the rebuild function.
I think the old mails were somehow hidden from the inbox as i noticed the the size of inbox.mbox is 1.22GB, whereas the latest INBOX is only 240mb.
How do I bring back all my old mails?
Mail.app v 1.3.11
OS 10.3.9
Many thanks.
Cheers

Hi mercuryfin.
I'm sorry you've been left out in the cold. For some reason your post has gone by unnoticed, maybe because there are many threads discussing problems similar to the one you're having. Read the following article (and the articles it links to) to better understand the problem and how to fix it:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=121837
Unfortunately, one of the side effects of trying to fix your problem as suggested in the article is that a lot of previously "deleted" messages may reappear and you'll have to delete them again. If you wish, we can try a slight variation of the procedure described there to see whether that side effect could be avoided -- I haven't tried it before, but it won't cause any data loss, at worst it'll just not work and we'll have to do what the article suggests.
Let me know if you need any clarifications or want to try the alternative approach I'm suggesting. If the latter, start by quitting Mail and, in the Finder, go to HOME/Library/Mail/. Locate the folder of the account that contains the largest Inbox -- its name starts with the account type (POP, IMAP, Mac), followed by the account username and the incoming mail server. Open the account folder, locate the file INBOX.mbox, right-click or ctrl-click on it and choose Show Package Contents. Now, choose Edit > Select All (⌘A), then Edit > Copy (⌘C) and paste it in your reply to this post so that I can see which items are within that mailbox. Tell me also the size of the mbox file that appears there.

    >After installing Lion (intel I-Mac 2g ram). My Microsoft Office 2004 no longer runs.
Upgrade to a Universal compatible version of Office or equivalent.  http://www.neooffice.org/ is the least expensive alternative, though importing Entourage into iCal, Mac OS X Mail, and Addressbook works best if the data was exported from Entourage while still in Snow Leopard.
    >Also, when I select "printer friendly" pages in Safari or Firefox, I get a "missing plugin" message.
When you upgraded, did you make sure that Safari was installed in the Applications folder?  If not, you may have to redownload Safari from http://www.apple.com/safari/ as it happens to be the same version.  Firefox double check is already Lion compatible.  For more on upgrading to Lion, see my FAQ*:

  • SOME mail missing after Leopard upgrade

I just upgraded to Leopard (from OS 10.3) and successfully imported most old messages into Mail. However, there is a gap - I had to rebuild my mailbox three months ago, and now I cannot find any messages from the date of the rebuild until the date I installed Leopard. The mailbox in my Library folder doesn't appear to have the missing messages. Could they be living somewhere else?

Hello and welcome to the Discussions.
Read the info in the topic at the link below, which while written about conversion from 10.3 to 10.4, would also structurally apply to a conversion from 10.3 to 10.5. Sadly, it would appear the conversion process has not been strengthened, although the real fault lies with the condition of the mailboxes prior to Upgrade.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5664866&#5664866
The messages are not lost, but properly converting them for use in Mail 3.0 is a detailed and tedious project. The best thing would be to have used Rebuild on every mailbox prior to the Upgrade, and if you had used mailboxes created in an even earlier version of Mail, to have removed the Leftover file. Of course I recognize it may be too late for that now, so the "devil is in the details"!
Please do not hesitate to ask any and all questions you need to ask to get comfortable with all you may need to do, depending on the number of large and complex mailboxes you had prior to the Upgrade.

  • Mail Missing After Leopard Upgrade

For some reason, since I upgraded to Leopard, my inbox only goes back 3 months or so with my .mac email.
I have years of mail that was on my computer that isn't there. I just did an upgrade on top of 10.4. How do I get it all back?
    Thanks.

Assuming you upgraded from 10.4.11 to 10.5.x then have you tried rebuilding your mailboxes? choose the mailbox you want rebuild and go to Mailbox>Rebuild?
If you have upgraded from an earlier 10.4.xx version you may want to search this discussion group as there are known issues with mailboxes and missing email.

  • Music missing after "Rebuild"

I have had a 30gb Zen Vision:M for about 4 years now and recently I turned it on and when it started up the screen said it was "Rebuilding".After it was done "Rebuilding" there were no songs in the Music Library. I still had all my Videos and Pictures which were playable but ALL the songs were gone. So,I plugged it into computer and opened up the Music folder on MP3 player and ALL the songs were in this folder. So,I went to Creative.com and downloaded the MP3 Recovery Tool which only updated firmware and still this did not work. So,I made a copy of ALL of the songs and "Formatted" the MP3 player and also did a "Disk Clean Up" and then put ALL the Music back into the "Music Library" folder. Still nothing shows up on the MP3 player but when the MP3 player is connected to Computer the "Music Library" folder has ALL the Music that I placed in this folder. Is there anything else I can do to regain the Music on MP3 player? The Firmware version is .62.02e. Any information on the issue will be Greatly Appreciated. Thank You for Your time.

You can redownload iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
For other music you will have to get them from where you obtained them the first time.

  • All my hotmail mails dissappeared after rebuild

    Hi everyone-
    Mail crashed yesterday.
I have 5 mail accounts, got four back with emails intact. All I did was to add new accounts back into mail where they had vanished and all of my emails were showing again.
This morning I re-did hotmail using the http plugin 1.49 that I always use.
Emails showed in in box, including new unread ones with the following message:
    "Bring account online" ....
I did a quick search and stupidly REBUILT my hotmail acct. All evidence of mails vanished.
Cannot find actual mails in ~library .... the inbox is there for hotmail....mails gone.
    Please help?

To get the other down to it snormal, about 0.5 GB, you need to restore the iPod.  First try from backup.  That will work unless the other is also in the backup.  If you still have the large other after restoring from backup you need to restore to factory defaults/new iPod.  Make sure that auto-syncing is turned off (go to iTunes>Preferences>Devices and check the box that says Prevent iPods... syncing) oherwise the bacup will contai the lareg other.  Restoring may also fix the other problems.

  • Mails missing after sync with Exchange

    Hi Community,
in my company I'm using my MBP (15", late 2013, i7, 10.9.4) in a Windows network with Exchange. I have an VM installed using Parallels 9, Win 7 64bit. Sometimes I have to use MS Outlook to send mails with a larger attachement (almost always as pdf) since some of my customers have difficulties to view mails from my MB correctly.
These Mails are properly shown in Outlook but don't show up in Mail. If I'm searching them via search in Mail, they were not found, doing the same with spotlight they show up properly in the search results.
All other mails are synced without any problems between Outlook and Mail.

It sometimes takes awhile for the info to download from itunes.
    try this:
Reboot the device by pressing and holding down the home and sleep/wake buttons (power) at the same time until the apple logo appears on the screen, then let go.
If that doesn't work then reset the device by going to settings/general/reset/reset all settings

  • Mail Missing Plug-in after sending; quit and restart Mail fixes it

mail > Missing Plug-in after sending; quit and restart Mail fixes it.
Its very obnoxious after all these years to have Apple Mail continue to complain about Missing Plug-in
This happens for PDFs, .zips, .jpgs and other types.
Any ideas why Apple cannot seem to fix this?

    Back up all data.
Boot into Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, follow the prompts to reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the boot volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.

  • Mail Reset After Kernel Panic- Accounts/Rules/preferences missing

My MbP had a kernel panic this evening and after the restart, I opened mail and got the "Welcome to Mail" message.
Tried restarting again, resetting pram (not sure why, but did), deleting preferences, etc. But all my mail preferences and accounts are missing.
They do still exist in the ~/library/Mail folder
But all my rules, smart folders, custom settings, etc are gone.
Any idea why this would happen?

Just wanted to make a quick reply because I had the same problem happen today, my MacBook Pro running 10.6.6, crashed with a kernel panic while using mail, although after checking the logs, it appears coreaudio caused the crash (had iTunes open in the background, perhaps a problem there?), had to do a force shutdown and restart (this is a very rare occurance that my MBP crashes).
When I started up again, mail would not start directly, instead was asking for details to set up a new account with the 'Welcome to Mail' message.
The fix was to move the mail preferences file (~/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist) to the desktop (or trash) and recover the most recent preferences file (com.apple.mail.plist) from time machine or other backup to the original location (~/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist).
Once I did that, restarted mail and all settings, messages, mailboxes, etc.. were exactly in place with no change (even the message I was typing when it crashed was still in the Drafts folder).
So this fix works as long as you have a back up.
(note I added extra info/explanation into this post for search engine's sake to make it easier to find)

  • Sound effects missing after 2.0 update?

Anyone else notice their sound effects (click, etc.) went missing after the 2.0 update? (and yes, "both" is checked under settings). Just wondered if this is universal or if something went haywire with mine...

Sweet! The power of the collective on the web...
Jeff - try this, worked great -
unfortunately i lost all my info on my touch when doing this, but I can dedicate some time tonight to resetting my wallpaper, my mail settings, etc.
i think the 'DFU' in these instructions means device firmware upgrade...found this on another forum where people complaining of same problem...
    1. Hold both the home and power buttons until the device turns off
    2. EXACTLY one second after the iPod turns off, release the sleep/wake button, holding the home button still ( the apple logo SHOULD NOT BE ON ).
    3. In about 20 seconds, you will see your iPod appear in iTunes, but the screen on your iPod will still be off. You are now in DFU mode.
    4. RELEASE the home button as soon as your iPod appears iTunes. If you fail to do so, your iPod will simply go back into recovery mode.
yo Apple - please roll out some info on this 'known issue'; While $9.95 isn't a budget-breaker, if you have to figure out how to make that $9.95 work on your Apple device like it appears some of us are, it speaks to posting something in Support about it - thanks!

  • VIPs missing after logout

I have noticed that my VIPs in Mail disappear after I logout of my account. It is unclear to me if these VIPs are supposed to sync to iCloud or not (They appear to be persisting in iCloud). Either way the VIPs have to be recreated every time I logout of my account on my mac. I notice that the VIPs seem to need to be recreated on my iPhone as well. I do have two iCloud accounts linked to my phone and mac only one of which syncs contacts. This never was a problem until the most recent OS X update.
Only including info on Mac here.
    Any ideas?

  • Also RAID 5 missing after reboot; RA Utilities non effective

I am having a nearly identical problem as listed in the "RAID 5 missing after reboot; RA Utilities non effective" thread, with one or two small differences.
We shut down our Xserve RAID normally on friday, started it back up on Monday to find that one of the arrays was no longer there. RAID 1 is still working perfectly, but RAID 2 now has all the drives listed as spare. Tried all the tools in RAID Admin, but nothing has worked. At the advice of Apple tech support i updated the firmware to 1.5, swapped out controllers and cables, and tried using the Recognize RAID command in utilities. Nothing has worked. Apple recomended bring the drives to Drive Savers to get the data recovered. Does anyone have any other ideas?
Oh, also this raid was reporting a failed drive on friday before it was shut off, when powered back on the drive now claims to be fine.

Guess I got lucky.... After a reboot of the Xserve RAID, RAID #2 mounted again. Did my backups, shut it back down, and updated firmware to 1.5 with no problems. All seems good now.
    Still wondering what happened.
It appears that drive #8 failed, and after the rebuild with new replacement drive, it seems as though the controller needed to be restarted too. The odd thing is, before the restart, #2 was acting like it had three new drives and no array configured at all. After the reboot, there is the RAID 5 array, no rebuild or anything - ready to go.
    So here is my question:
How often does everyone reboot their Xserve RAID? should it be done periodically? Every 3 months? Every month?
Or is this just a hiccup with the parity rebuild, and nothing else to worry about, or even a firmware issue for the controller(s) that 1.5 may resolve?

  • Mail quits after running for a few minutes

Mail quits after running for a couple of minutes, started doing it yesterday. I have looked at the advice given for similar problems, disk utility can find no problem with my drive, I repaired permissions anyway. No change.
Also ran the 'plutil' on the plist which came out as 'OK'.
I don't 'think' it is immediately the result of updating to 10.4.7 as it ran happily for some time after the update.
Is the only solution to trash the plist and redo all my mail accounts?
    20' iMac 2.1 Ghz PowerPC G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   1 GB RAM

Mail probably is crashing when new junk mail arrives. Try the following in order to identify the problem:
    1. Either tell Mail to go offline immediately after opening it, or shut down your Internet connection and open Mail afterwards.
    2. Disable junk mail filtering in Mail > Preferences > Junk Mail.
    3. Go online again.
If Mail doesn't crash now, then you know for sure there is something wrong with the junk filter. In that case, the following procedure should fix the problem:
    1. Quit Mail if it's running.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/.
    3. Locate LSMMap2 and move it to the Trash -- deleting this file is what clicking the Reset button in Preferences > Junk Mail does. If you see an LSMMap file there, move it to the Trash too.
    4. Locate DefaultCounts and move it to the Trash. This file keeps statistics about the number of messages that have been marked as junk, either automatically by the junk filter or manually by the user.
    5. Locate MessageRules.plist and move it to the Desktop. This is where Mail 2.x stores all rules, including those used by the junk filter. If there is a file called MessageRules.plist.backup, move it to the Desktop too. You may also see MessageSorting.plist files there; this is where Mail 1.x stored the rules, and they are no longer used by Mail 2.x, so just move them to the Trash if you see them.
    6. Look for the account folders. The name of each account folder starts with the account type (POP, IMAP, Mac), followed by the account username and the incoming mail server. Open each of the account folders, locate the Junk.mbox or Junk.imapmbox folder within it, and move it to the Trash if present.
    7. Go to ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/. Locate any Junk.mbox folders there (their name may include the account name in parenthesis), and move them to the Trash.
Note: Messages in Junk folders with an .mbox suffix are stored locally, and will be lost forever as a result of doing steps 6 and 7. If there is a chance that you have legit messages there and you want to preserve them, move them to another mailbox in Mail first (you may prevent Mail from crashing by shutting down the Internet connection or telling Mail to go offline immediately after opening it). Messages in Junk folders with an .imapmbox suffix are stored on the server and can be ignored (Mail will rebuild those mailboxes automatically).
    8. Open Mail. As a result of removing the rules file, the junk filter will be disabled now. You may want to either tell Mail to go offline immediately after opening it, or shut down the Internet connection before opening Mail, to prevent it from downloading anything until the junk mail filter has been enabled again.
    9. Go to Mail > Preferences > Junk Mail, enable junk filtering, and configure it however you wish.
    10. Go online again if you went offline in step 8.
If the above solves the problem and you don't have any rules you'd like to preserve or recreating them is not a daunting task, just delete the MessageRules.plist files that were moved to the Desktop and be done with it.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the file path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the file path there.

  • Contacts numbers missing after IOS 5 update.

Contacts missing after IOS 5 update.  I turned off my phone and turned it back on but only my email contacts were there not my numbers.  I updated it on my PC.

Ok. So after too much of a fight with the iPhone, here is what i think got back the contacts on my phone.
Step 1: Setting -> Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> iCloud : Switch off everything.
Step 2: Go back to main setting page.
Step 3: Make sure you see "Inactive" under iCloud.
Step 4: Hit the home button
Step 5: Close iTunes and start it back up.
Step 6: Unplug your iPhone from the computer and plug it back in.
Step 4,5,6 is to make sure you are starting a new session.
    Step 7: Sync iTunes.
Step 8: Check your contacts. They should have come back up
Step 9: Setting -> Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> iCloud : Switch on everything.
Choose the option "merge" when you get it.
