MAIL-more .emlx files in Library than messages in Mail.app

I have seen that the number of messages .emlx in several Folders and subfolders of my Library/Mail/V2/..... is much more than the actual number of Mails to be seen in the different Folders of Mail.app.   I keep only a limited number of Mails (last few weeks) so it is easy to see the difference; many .emlx go back to 2011.
My Mail in both my iMac and MacBookPro are the result of several migrations from 2005 from 3 MBP and 2 iMac, and they all sync with iCloud. During the time I changed one of the mail accounts from POP to IMAP.  Until about 2010 I had a POP account and I used to copy tha Mail folder from one Mac to another to keep trace of the sent mail which was not possible to sync due to POP account.  I have basically 2 accounts one iCloud and one IMAP.
I have no problem at all on my Macs and my iPhone which Mail but I whould like to know if this left stuff could be cleaned in some way.
The folder structure is complex.
Thanks for any suggestion.

Quit Mail.
Back up all data. That means you know you can restore the Mail database, no matter what happens.
Triple-click the text on the line below to select it:
~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope Index
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A Finder window will open with a file selected. Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have names that begin with "Envelope Index". Move those files, if any, to the Trash. Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is corrupt and that Mail has to quit. Click OK.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the file you moved to the Desktop. If you get a warning that the file is in use when you try to empty the Trash, log out and log back in.

Only if the songs were bought from iTunes, you use transfer purchases.

As long as the report ends up with 'Permissions repair complete' then, as far as permissions go, you are fine. You can ignore the various statements in the report:

  • How can I sent 2 or more attached files with 1 email-message from Ipad iOs6.0?

How to sent a mail with 2 or more attachments from Ipad or Iphone? Not foto or video-files!

Pages and iBook will only accomodate one document at a time.
Pages - can be sent from the open document (Tools Menu - looks like wrench) or the dccument library screen (Tap Edit, tap the document, tap the the share iconn  - looks like square with a swoosh arrow). iBooks work from the open document.
GoodReader supports multiple email attachments, and I'm sure there are others available in the app store.

  • Sync'ing "Sent"-box between Mail.app and e-mail sent using the web-app (2)

    Hi,
A while ago, I posted this question, and Allan Sampson provided the answer, how to do it quickly and efficiently (see below).
However, that method turns out to have a flaw:
Here's what I just posted to Apple's sofware feedback:
    ========
During the week, I connect to the internet from behind a firewall that prevents IMAP usage. I therefore use the webmail access to my @mac.com account. Once I am connected from a more liberal network, I let Mail.app sync with the @mac.com account, and transfer the "sent" messages from the server (the "Sent Messages" sub-folder at the bottom of the left-hand side folder listing in Mail.app) into the "Sent" (paper glider looking) folder, to be stored locally. I store about 7 year's worth of e-mail and use it as database.
Unfortunately, when so transfering the sent messages from the @mac.com server into the local "Sent" folder, the "Date Sent" inexplicably changes to the date of transfer, and the original date of sending is obliterated!!! This should not happen, and I cannot but consider it a bug in Mail.app.
    Please fix this ASAP!
    ========
In the meanwhile, does anyone know of a workaroud, other than forwarding those "sent" messages to myself, whereby the original header with the original "date sent" would be retained?
    Thanks, Tristan

Tristan, we’re getting nowhere. For some reason that escapes me, you keep ignoring, misreading and/or misunderstanding what I’m saying...
At this point, I can only guess that you don’t really know what I’m referring to when I talk about message headers. The message headers are not the same as the column headers that Mail displays in the message list. The message headers is what Mail shows above the message body when viewing a message. You can choose the amount of header information that Mail shows there by default in Preferences > Viewing > Show header detail, and you can tell Mail to show all the headers while viewing a message by doing View > Message > Long Headers.
There is no such thing as Date Sent or Date Received message headers. The date & time that Mail shows in the Date Sent column is the date & time that appears in the Date message header and is set by the sender’s mail client. The date & time that Mail shows in the Date Received column is the date & time that appears in the latest (topmost) Received message header and is set by the recipient’s incoming mail server.
If the message headers that Mail uses to determine the date & time that it should display in the Date Sent and Date Received columns are missing, Mail cannot reliably show the right date & time there, but it may still try to do so by looking somewhere else, such as the Internal Date message attribute if the message is stored on an IMAP server. Problem is, contrary to what happens with the message headers I’ve mentioned, the Internal Date is an IMAP attribute that isn’t part of the message itself, and hence, is lost as soon as the message is moved out of the server...
    Before the transfer:
    <http://homepage.mac.com/thubsch/eMailTransfer0.gif>
What you’re showing here is Date Received, not Date Sent, but I could say the same I’ve said about Date Sent in previous posts, except in this case Mail gets the date & time to be displayed there from the latest (topmost) Received message header. The thing is, that header is set by the recipient’s incoming mail server, so don’t be surprised if you don’t see it either by doing View > Message > Long Headers while viewing a sent message...
Again, if that message header is not present, Mail will have to get the date & time to be displayed in the Date Received column from somewhere else. In particular, if the message is stored on an IMAP server, as is the case here, it can determine that date & time by querying the IMAP server for the Internal Date message attribute, just like it can for the Date Sent column when there is no Date message header.
BTW, note that Date Received is meaningless for sent messages (Mail has absolutely no idea when the messages were received, not even whether they were actually received), but since those messages would normally have no Received message header, Mail would actually display the right sent date & time in Date Received for sent messages if the Date message header was present.
However, I wish to store those messages on my machine locally. In answer
to my earlier question (for which you cited the URL), the really simple
procedure was recommended, to select all messages from "SentMessages"
and press-and-drag them into the "Sent" folder. When I do that, the "Date
Sent" for all those messages becomes the date & time of transfer:
    <http://homepage.mac.com/thubsch/eMailTransfer1.gif>
And again, when you do that, Mail can no longer query the IMAP server for the Internal Date message attribute. Since the message headers that you keep ignoring and that Mail needs in order to be able to show the right date & time in the Date Sent and Date Received columns aren’t there either, Mail simply has absolutely no way of knowing what date & time should it display there other than by looking at the creation date of the *.emlx files associated with those messages...
Now, you are welcome to write a dissertation on how come this happens and
why this is not a bug in "Mail.app". However, you are missing the boat:
Interestingly enough, I’ve already explained multiple times why that happens and why this is not Mail’s fault. The culprit here is the mail client used to send those messages, which fails to set the Date message header that Mail (or any other mail client, for that matter) needs in order to be able to determine what the Date Sent is supposed to be.
It’s you who keeps missing the boat and ignoring, misreading and/or misunderstanding everything I’m saying...

  • Mail.app says I have more messages than exist

I'm having an issue with Mail.app pointing to the gmail server using IMAP (default automatic setup)
Right now I have 3 messages in my inbox, all read. Mail.app's title says "Inbox (4 messages)" even though I have 3. It's off by 1 every now and then and I have to quit and restart to have it fix it - although this doesn't always solve the problem I don't think
Is this a known issue? How can I file a bug report?

    Empty/corrupt iTunes library after upgrade/crash

  • After upgrading recently I got this message: "The file 'iTunes Library.itl' cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes." The music/video files are still on my MacBook Pro.  Is it because I'm still on 10.5.8?  How do I fix this?

For your reference I’m using a MacBook Pro running 10.5.8.  Several weeks ago on a Monday I received an upgrade for iTunes. When Tuesday arrived I attempted to log in so that I could download the latest freebie song(s).  I was met w/this message: “The file ‘iTunes Library.itl’ cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes.”
The music/video files are still on my Mac (I’ve verified that via Searchlight), but I’m unable to open the program.  Since I know that 10.5.8 is rapidly becoming prehistoric, could it be that the newest iTunes isn’t compatible w/this particular OS?  I’d like to switch up, but understand that the newest OS won’t work on a Mac of this vintage (6 years old).  In addition, my Adobe products (all CS2) won’t work w/anything newer than 10.5.8, so I’m reluctant to go to a newer OS (I just can’t afford the Adobe upgrade $$$ @ this point).
Is there any way to get a download of an “old” iTunes version?  If there were, I’d simply refuse any future upgrades until my personal economy allows me to stop working as if it were 2006.  Please advise, somebody!

I don't know how you received an upgrade for iTunes.  You make it sound like it was sent to you.  At most your computer will tell you of a new version and you tell it to download it and install it.  However, a computer will not do this for a version which is incompatible.  iTunes 10.7 came out a few weeks ago but your computer would not notify you and even if it did, 10.7 would refuse to install on your computer.  So this part isn't making a lot of sense.
Two ways to get the 'newer version' message.  One is to open your library on a computer running a newer version, and then try to open it with an older version.  Usually happens when the library is on an external and used with multiple computers.  The second way is if you have multiple versions of itunes installed on your computer.
The newest (and likely the last) iTunes for OSX 10.5.8 is iTunes 10.6.3 which has been out for quite a while.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

its annoying since i dont want to be forced to download a 720MB pckage of itunes every month - even more so, if the system start "lying" to me.
or is it another problem? anyone got the same? any solution? maybe an erratic prompt?

zepel has it, but perhaps some more detail will help.
    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!

  • Error Message: "The file 'iTunes Library.itl" cannot be read..."

I'm trying to install iTunes on my machine and am getting this error message:
"The file 'iTunes Library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes."
Does anyone know why? How can I fix this?

In order to play m4p files, you must authorise your new PC. iTunes should prompt you to do this if you try to play an m4p file on an unauthorised PC.
Apple has a strict download once policy, so you cannot re-download files that you have already downloaded.
The simplest way to get you files off the external drive is to add the folder containing your music to iTunes with File>>Add folder to library. You need to ensure that "Copy to itunes music folder when adding to library" is checked on the advanced tab of Preferences.
Doing it this way is easy but you lose counts and ratings etc. If you want to recover these, there are two possibilities.
If you had your iTunes folder containing the the iTunes Library files on the external drive, You can simply connect to it by doing a shift key start.
Hold down the shift key and start iTunes. Keep holding the shift key until you are promoted to choose a library. Navigate to the iTunes folder on the external drive and choose iTunes Library.itl.
But I suspect that you had your iTunes folder with lirbary files on your old PC. Recovering the library data is more complicated and I will need more information about your old set up if you want to attempt it.

    Hello,
it seems that we have problem with SAP XI AF CPA Cache.
We make this changes and after this AF Cache stops working.
    •     In the Visual Administrator, in service SAP XI AF CPA Cache, set the SLDAccess parameter to false
    •     Save your entry and start the service
    •     In service SAP XI AF CPA Cache, check that the cacheType parameter has the value DIRECTORY
    •     In service SAP XI Adapter: XI, enter values for:
    o     xiadapter.isconfig.url - http://xidev:8038/sap/xi/engine?type=entry
    o     xiadapter.isconfig.username - XIAFUSER
    o     xiadapter.isconfig.password –
    o     xiadapter.isconfig.sapClient - 001
    o     xiadapter.isconfig.sapLanguage - en
    •     On the Integration Server, use transaction SMICM to check that you have entered the correct URL for the Integration Server.
    •     On the Integration Server, use transaction SU01 to create a new user XIAFUSER
    •     Assign the role SAP_XI_AF_SERV_USER_MAIN to the user XIAFUSER
    •     In the Visual Administrator, check whether the user synchronization was successful
    •     Use the new user to log on to the Integration Server and change the initial password to master password
Any idea for SAP XI AF CPA Cache update?

  • More tracks on my iPod than in my library??

When I upgrade my iPod, it doesn't take into account all the changes I've made in my library, eg I've changed the artist name for a podcast and the file now appears under both the old and the new name. So my iTunes library and my iPod library don't coincide exactly and I have more tracks on my iPod than on iTunes... What should I do??
    Thanks!

Do you manualy update or auto update the iPod?
    Auto update should fix this.
I auto update which is why I can't figure out why I don't end up with 2 identical libraries...
