Mail multiple identities...?

I have a few dotmac mail addresses
( aliases ) that I use to send pseudo-anonymous mail
( NOT spam! ) when I want to preseve my actula address.
I would like to have different accounts in Mail
so I can switch from one to the other on-the-fly...
...but Mail does not allow me to enter the same information
( like smtp, etcetera ) for a new, different account,
which only difference would be the «name» and «email» fields.
Is there a way to do it sans bulkyslow applescripts...?

I was going to try Mail again (I've been using GyazMail) to see if this account issue had been solved. I too want to create more than one account that has the same extender...I use a forwarding service that sends all mail to my one email address but I would like to separate incoming and outgoing into different accounts. For example, [email protected]; [email protected], [email protected] I've never been able to do this in Mail but no problem in GyazMail. Using your suggestion of putting all addresses in one account might work for me except that I would not be able to separate "Sent" folders...unless I used a Rule or somethink like that.
Just wondering if there might be another solution...or has Mail been fixed for this?

Mail - Support for Multiple Identities (under one OS account).

Let me define what I mean by an "Identity" before that is misunderstood.
In Entourage, you can have multiple email accounts (just like in Apple Mail). However you can create multiple Identities, each of which only has access to that Identity's email accounts.
For example, the Mac is operating using one User Account: lets call this account "Dave". Now while logged into this User account on the Mac, I can have an Entourage Identity called "Dave - Personal" that only has access to a group of personal email accounts. I can then (within Entourage) switch to an Identity called "Dave - Work" that would then only have access to my work email accounts.
All the while, regardless of which Entourage Identity I am using, I am at all times still logged in to the Mac User account "Dave", so I have access to all of the same data (documents, etc.).
Is there a way to have Apple Mail operate in the same manner?
Before anyone asks why....
I keep my work emails and my personal emails in different Identities, within the same Mac User account. I do not open up the work Identity (with the work-related email accounts) after 5 p.m. weekdays or during the entire weekend. (This way, I don't have to see or worry about work!) However, whether I am at work or at home, (or anywhere else) I still want to have access to all of the same data within my Mac User account. So, the solution that most people may recommend, which would be to create separate Mac user accounts for each Identity, doesn't really solve my problem.
Does anyone know if this type of functionality can be had using Apple Mail? I am growing tired of Entourage, and this is one (of several) reasons I have still not switched to Apple Mail.

In a word, No. To accomplish that you must create a separate user account. You can have multiple email accounts within Mail, however. But not as a separate identity as in Entourage.

Multiple identities

My new 20" imac is shipping from Cali as we speak. I am moving from windows and I have a question on the basics...and this pertains to itunes & iphoto..
My wife and I (and my 5 year old son) will be sharing the computer. Over at the OS board I had asked about using multiple identities. Mostly for mac mail. I was told the only way you can do this is log in as a different user.
OK, cool. My wife and I use outlook now and want to keep the email accounts seperate.
The problem is though, we would rather have the music (itunes) and definately the pictures all the same. What do other people do in this case? I don't know how Itunes and Iphoto handle this...?

Both users have their libraries in..let's say the shared folder....does that virtually make all music into one library, no matter what identity imports / buys the music
Yes, all users have all their music at one location. Their libraries however don't have to be the same.
Each user still has it's own library, which can be all or only a part of the music in the 'Shared' folder.
When you set up such a shared folder, and add all the music to the iTunes library of another account, the libraries will be the same at first.
If user 'A' imports a CD, the files will be stored in the 'Shared' folder.
The library of user 'B' will not be automatically updated however. He/she will have to add the songs to his/her library. If the CD also is imported by user 'B', that will result in duplicate files.
Be careful when deleting files. Usually, when I delete songs I don't like (anymore), I choose to trash them.
On systems with a shared library that would result in creating 'dead links' in other users' libraries.
If you want to delete songs from your library choose to 'Keep the files' to avoid 'angry faces'.
So, it's important to know the weakness and the strength of such a setup.
The weakness is the fact that it can be messed up completely by other users.
On the other hand you will save HD space by avoiding having duplicates in different libraries.

One GMAIL account, multiple identities: how to access that on iPhone?

I use my Gmail account to fetch mails sent to several POP-mail-boxes, so that I can access those mails from a single mailbox. This works fine, especially because gmail allows me to send mail from the web-interface using different identities.
I now have set up my iPhone 3g to access my gmail account through IMAP. It works fine, except that I can only sent mail using my @gmail.com - identity, since iphone regards the login as identical to the sender address.
How to solve this? Does anyone know how I could use my gmail account, and still send from different addresses / using multiple identities?

I have wanted to be able to do this since "Forever". This is NOT a Gmail limitation... this works the same for ALL POP accounts...
The other thing that really gets me is that you can only have 1 signature! Even if you have multiple email accounts setup.

Sorry if this is something that has been addressed here before. I was wondering if anyone knows a way to set up multiple identities within the Mac Mail program (similar to how it is done in Entourage). My husband and I use the same account on our iMac for personal stuff -- he's been using Mail and I've been using Entourage. I'd like to start using Mail w/o having to create a separate account on the computer, and I don't want all our email downloading into the same inbox. We've looked at the program and haven't seen a way to do it -- is there a 3rd party application that does this -- something similar to iPhoto Buddy perhaps?

Hello,
First off I am not yet running Leopard, so there might be some differences I am unaware of. In Tiger (10.4) all you have to do is open the Mail app, click on preferances, and then in the account area click the Plus button on the bottom left of the window. Set up that seperate account according to whatever email service you are using. After it's all set up you will have two seperate inboxes in the Mail app.
I hope this is the same in Leopard.

Windows XP Using iTunes with Multiple Identities

Hi. I'm using Windows XP and iTunes 7. I have my music files on an external drive, but all my library files are in My Music folders. I'd like to share all the music with other users of this PC (my kids) from their own identities. I was able to import the music, but album artwork that iTunes does not have that I imported on my own does not shows up on the new identity.
Also, I am guessing that, if I add a song with the original identity, it will not show up in iTunes with the new identity unless I add the library, folder, song, etc.
Is there a proper way to share iTunes music on the same PC with multiple identities?

E mailing multiple photos

Hello,
I presume this will be an easy one for someone. How do I e mail multiple photos on the same e mail form iphoto.
If I create a new mail from mac mail and try to attach a photograph I don't seem to be able to browse my iphoto library.
If I compose a mail straight from iphoto i'm not sure how I add more than one photo to the e mail.
I want to e mail multiple photos perhaps from different events etc.

This is built into Mail in 10.5. You can use a media browser.
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
You can drag pics from the Browser to the Mail message window.

RDP 6 client and saving multiple identities

Have I just missed something somewhere, or does the new RDP client no longer allow you to retain the username/password in a saved .rdp file for multiple identities on a particular RDP target? It drives me nuts that I cannot rdp into a server as two or more different users with a single click by keeping the username/pwds saved, relying on the security of the workstation upon which the client is installed.

Hi Drew, thanks for your reply. I have indeed read through that blog, in fact I posed the same question there. I still do not see how to accomplish what I'm looking for though. Yes, I can save a username/pwd for a particular server in an .rdp file for a particular user. The question is, how do I save 2 or more different username/pwd pairs (presumably in different .rdp files) for a particular server?
If I create a "server1user1.rdp" file for server1.a.org, and save the credentials of user1 with appropriate password, then I can get into server1.a.org as user1 with a double click of the server1user1.rdp file. If however I then create a new rdp file, say server1user2.rdp, that also targets server1.a.org, and edit the credentials with user2 as the username and the appropriate passwd, then I can get into server1.a.org as user2 with a double click of the server1user2.rdp file. however, when I go back and double click on server1user1.rdp, the credentials there have been updated with those of user2, so now I have two rdp files that get me into server1.a.org, both of which are for user2, and I can no longer get into server1.a.org as user1 without re-entering the password. I cannot get beyond a 1 to 1 mapping between username and TS server target. How do I create two seperate rdp files that get me into the same server as two seperate users?

IPhoto won't let me e-mail multiple photos anymore

Since I got Leopard I can no longer compose and e-mail multiple photos from iPhoto (mine is iPhoto 4).
I used to be able to highlight several photos in my iPhoto library, select 'e-mail' in the toolbar, and a newly composed e-mail would pop up with the selected photos embedded and ready to go to the recipient. However, since Leopard if I select more than one photo and hit 'e-mail,' I get the following error message:
"Mail got an error. Can't get paragraph 8 of content of outgoing message id 107157168. Invalid index."
An e-mail is composed, however, it is embedded with only the first selected photo and no others. Can anyone help?

Welcome to the Apple user discussion forums
this has been reported on these forums in the past and appears to be a bug
for now (and maybe for always - you are not likely to see any more updated to iPhoto 4) you need to either export the photos and add them to the e-mail or create the e-mail with the first photo and then drag the remaining ones to it

Entourage has the ability to have multiple identities, can Mail do this?

In Enttourage, you can have multiple email users in the same local user account, and you can switch identities to access the different email account. This is really useful if multiple people share a login, but want to have access to their own email...
Eudora had a similar trick, you could copy the settings, then change them for each user, then the user just dbl clicks their settings file and has access to their own email account....
Does Mail.app have similar capabilities?

How to get multiple identities in mail.app in ios7

I am trying to get the equivaelent of Thunderbird's identities in mail.app. I can do this on the desktop version. The way to do that there is that you manually enter the smtp information for the other address and then go to mail-> preferences and under email address seperate your emails with a comma.
For instance, suppose I had to emails, main @email.com and support @email.com. I don't want 2 seperate accounts as everything at support @email.com gets forwarded to main @email.com
Using the desktop mail.app, I do the following:
I create an account for main @email.com. I then go in and change the email address line to show: "main @email.com, support @email.com".
I then go in and add the smtp information for support @email.com. Then when I send email, I can send directly and just select support @email.com as the server.
This is equivalent to the thunderbird "manage identities".
However, I can't seem to do this in IOS 7. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Mail.app using multiple identities and outgoing servers, how to map them?

Hi all,
I am using mail account and my main account (gmail) is defined as IMAP on it.
In my gmail settings, all my other mails are forwarded to this e-mail account so I don't need to define my other mails to get those mails (since I get them from my mail account).
When sending an e-mail or replying, I want to use the same identity that the mail was sent to and the same outgoing mail server.
For now, I successfully defined my different identities in my main account (i.e., I added them in the e-mail address field with comma separated values), and I also managed to define different outgoing servers (from account -> outgoing servers). However, my problem is that, I cannot link an identity to an outgoing server. They are all linked to my default mail's outgoing server by default and I have to manually select them every time I sent an e-mail. However what I want is the following:
Let's say that I have 2 identities: id1 and id2 and two outgoing server os1 and os2.
I want the mail.app to select os1 whenever I selected id1 and os2 whenever I select id2.
I want the mail.app to select os2 whenever it decides to use id2 (because the e-mail was sent to id2) and the same for the other os-id pair.
Is this possible? All help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, and do ask if you need more information.

Have you tried restarting or resetting your iPhone?
Restart: Press On/Off button until the Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after It shuts down, press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10 seconds).
Also consider deleting and reinstalling the Mail Account in question.

Mail Multiple Users

Is there a way in Mail to create multiple users with access control via password? Two of us use the iMac and the only thing we want to secure is the Mail. We want to have full share for files and other functions so I don't really want to create multiple user accounts on the system.
We are converting from a Windows XP system and use the "Identities" function in Outlook Express for this on the WINXP system.
iMac 20" Duo / Macbook 13.3" Black Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Anyway, this would not secure your Mail and would not work to keep your messages separate.
The way Mail files messages makes having two separate identities in the same account not possible. Also, email messages are stored as plain text in Users/~/Library/Mail. If you allow someone else access to your user account, they could quite easily navigate to the folder and open all the messages there with TextEdit –they don't need to open Mail.
You really are better off with separate accounts. If you have an external HD, or if you partition your internal, you can turn on the option to 'Ignore Ownership on this Volume" with the Get Info window to allow easier sharing of files while keeping your Home folder (and your Mail) private.
