Mail Nags for POP Password; Please Fix It

At first it only happened on my G5 iMac, now it has begun to happen on my MacBook Pro:
Mail can't find the password for the POP3 account in the keychain and keeps nagging me for it. This is really getting annoying. On the G5 iMac, I tried all the remedies for fixing the keychain. However, there is no other problem with the keychain, and beyond that, there is no reason for Mail to use the keychain: the password is in the account settings!
I have concluded that this is a bug that impairs the value and usability of Mail, and that it needs to be fixed pronto. Would an Apple employee please respond vaguely to this post, then light a fire under someone to fix this in a software update?

Ken,
I see this often too, it may be caused by interfering requests when you have several accounts on line. What you see is not the normal Keychain Opening password request, I assume, but a separate request from inside Mail. For dark reasons, this does not relate well to keychain.
Next time this happens, just press cancel when requested for the password, and press the online/offline button (you can add this one on your Mail toolbar) and do a check mail, it should now work again.

  • Mail ask for the password all the time

    Hello.
For the last month I´ve been experiencing problems with my mail. It ask me for the password every few seconds. I´ve have already tried all the solutions published at the help page in apple the site, but the problem is still on.
Could anyone of you give some help.
    Many thanks.
PS: if someone could send me an answer in spanish, it could be easier for me.
    Thanks.

    Hola Luis.
I’ll reply in English, amongst other reasons because that allows me to copy & paste between posts, but let me know if there is something you don’t fully understand. You can post in Spanish if you want. BTW, you can make your life easier in these forums by going to System Preferences > International and moving English to the top of the list. The next time you launch an application, it'll be all in English.
Open /Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access, choose Keychain First Aid from the application menu, and proceed to repair the keychain. If that doesn’t work, you may try removing the password entry from the keychain and letting Mail create it again.
Note that Mail often doesn’t correctly report what the problem really is. If Mail can connect to the server but cannot log into your mail account for some reason, it’ll ask for your password, regardless of whether that’s really the problem or not. Don’t keep entering the password every time, because that’s not the problem (click Cancel instead, and take the account back online afterwards).
Some ISPs refuse connection attempts if they are too frequent, for example, or limit the number of simultaneous connections that are allowed from the same IP address, or the account may have become full, or there might be a problem with the network, or there might be a problem with the server... If the latter (i.e. if there is a problem with the network or the server), the problem will probably fix itself after some time for no apparent reason.
Actually, if Mail asks for the password every few seconds, then you’re probably checking for mail too often, and that alone could be the reason you have this problem. What’s the time interval chosen in Preferences > General > Check for New Mail? If it’s set to Every minute, try changing it to Every 5 minutes.
Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list.
Also, try using a different method to connect to Internet, if possible, or connecting the computer to Internet as directly as possible, i.e. bypassing any routers that might be present, using an ethernet cable instead of wireless, etc., and see whether that makes a difference.

  • Mail asked for a password each time it starts

I've used gmail (IMAP) for several months with no problems, until recently. Now Mail asks for a password each time it starts, then again when I try to send a mail. Despite re-entering the password and checking the box for the password to be stored, I'm prompted again the next time I re-start Mail.
I've tried several remedies described here in support discussions including:
    1. delete the imap.gmail.com and smtp.gmail.com entries in the keychain then re-enter the password via Mail.
    2. run keychain first aid.
    3. manually enter the passwords in keychain
    4. use disk utility to repair all permissions
None of the above remedies have worked for me.
With some trial and error, I've discovered that setting Access Control for the two Keychain items (imap.gmail.com and smtp.gmail.com) to "Allow all applications" (rather than the default "Confirm before allowing" with "Mail" as the listed application) does work.
So it appears that Keychain allows Mail to store the passwords but then does not allow Mail access to retrieve the stored passwords once Mail is restarted when "Confirm before allowing" is set.
Although now I have a "Work-around", does anyone have an idea of what's broken and how to fix it? Thanks.

OK. I tried the "Keychain Reset" and it did not work. The reset created a blank keychain file. I entered the mail passwords after starting Mail.app, then quit Mail. When I restarted Mail.app, it prompted again for the previously entered password. No change.
The clue to the problem is the current "work around". If I set "Allow All Applications" the Keychain allows Mail.app to use the stored passwords. Of course this defeats part of the security.

  • How do i stop Mail asking for Keychain password?

I have my Keychain set up with a password.
I'd like to allow Mail access to the relevant parts of the Keychain WITHOUT needing me to enter my password all the time.
    How do I do it?
So far I've gone into Keychain Access, found my mail (IMAP & SMTP) passwords and added Mail to the list of applications to always grant access to, but it's still asking for my password.
Could it be due to my @me.com email? If so, what do I need to grant access to as I can't see any specific IMAP/SMTP me.com passwords.
    thanks,
    donncha

    Back up all data.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Select the login keychain from the list on the left side of the Keychain Access window. If your default keychain has a different name, select that.
If the lock icon in the top left corner of the window shows that the keychain is locked, click to unlock it. You'll be prompted for the keychain password, which is the same as your login password, unless you've changed it.
Right-click or control-click the login entry in the list. From the menu that pops up, select Change Settings for Keychain "login". In the sheet that opens, uncheck both boxes, if not already unchecked.
    From the menu bar, select
Keychain Access ▹ Preferences ▹ First Aid
If the box marked Keep login keychain unlocked is not checked, check it.
    Select
Keychain Access ▹ Keychain First Aid
from the menu bar and repair the keychain. Quit Keychain Access.

  • Mail Asking for Keychain Password Randomly for Years

Apple Mail has been randomly asking me to type in my keychain password for one single email account for seriously 10 years.
How the **** can I turn this off, forever, and ever, so I never have to see the god **** thing again!?
It is on a Gmail account setup through Apple Mail.
    HARDWARE/SOFTWARE I AM RUNNING:
2.66 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
    8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    OS 10.6.7

The server is sometimes falsely rejecting your login. That happens occasionally with many mail servers. When it does, Mail assumes that the password saved in your Keychain is wrong, even though it isn't, and you get the prompt.
One thing you can do is to cancel out of the prompt. That will cause the account to be taken offline. Later you can take it back online (Mail > Mailbox > Take all accounts online) and try again. Usually it will work on the second try.
You may also be able to reduce the frequency of login failures by changing to a different authentication method. I don't use Gmail, so I can't tell you what the best method is. If you have another Gmail account that works better than this one, compare their Advanced settings in Mail preferences. If not, you'll just have to do some research or contact Gmail tech support (if there is any.)

  • Can Mail ask for a password when using an account?

I would like to open Mail with a password for using an account. Is it possible?

Yes, Go to Mail - Preferences - select the "Accounts" tab and select your mail account on the left. In the password field, blank it out. You will be prompted for the password when mail tries to access the account.

  • Mail asking for my password but won't accept it?

Hi I am having problems with my mail on my MacBook. It is asking for enter password for account, I put my assword in then it comes saying"the MobileMe imap server "mail.mac.com" rejected it"? Any ideas as this has never happened before?!?
    Many thanks

    Hi..
    Launch the Mail app.
From the Mail menu bar click Mail > Preferences then click the Accounts tab then the Account Information tab.
Select your MMe account on the left then type in your password.
If that didn't help, open Keychain Access located in /Applications/Utilities
    Select Password on the left.
Use the search field top right corner of that window to locate your MMe keychain.
Then right or control click the keychain, then click Delete.
Go back to the Account Information tab in Mail > Preferences > Accounts.
Type in the password. Click Yes when prompted to save that data to a new keychain.

it seems to be broken with "noatime" set.
Apparently it works if you use the maildir folder format.
    http://wiki.mutt.org/?MuttFaq/Folder
There is also some issue with the "noatime" flag for mounting filesystems (most often used on laptops). [...] another option is to use the MaildirFormat.

  • Keychain problem - mail always asks for pop password

I have tried to set the password in Mail prefs but it simply won't stay there. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance,
    Mike Caley

try clicking "cancel" instead of re-entering the password, I have found this to work in the past - no idea why.. theory is that my mac has the correct password but some other mail pop log in problem externally is being interpreted by mail as a log in failure when it isn't, such as the pop box still being locked from an earlier session (timeouts etc) or by another simultaneous login by another machine using the same pop box, maybe a laptop and a desktop.
the problem used to drive me nuts.

  • Mail asks for MobileMe password

Yesterday, my Mac Mail began prompting:
The iCloud IMAP server “p13-imap.mail.me.com” rejected the password for user “lauralobo”
I can't access my mail, so tried changing my password, thinking I wasn't remembering it properly. I changed it on my phone. I attempted logging into iCloud.com mail through Safari. It didn't recognize my new password, so I reset it through Safari. Still, iCloud mail would not permit me to login. And asked that I reset my password. I had Reset Safari, and tried logging in using Chrome. I can still access my email on my phone, but now iCloud.com has disabled my account and continues to ask for a new password, again… and I am still locked out of my MacMail.
    10.7.5, Mail version 5.3

Try going to System Preferences>iCloud, uncheck Mail, restart your Mac, then go back and check Mail again.  This deletes, then adds back your iCloud email account.
Of course, if you can't sign in on iCloud.com because your iCloud ID is disabled, you'll have to fix that first.  To do that, contact the Apple account security team and ask for assistance: Apple ID: Contacting Apple for help with Apple ID account security (be sure to ask for the account security team).

  • You Can't Create A Mail Folder For POP Accounts?

I can't believe that I am unable to create a folder for a POP email account so that I can file and manage my email on the iPhone 3g! Which rocket scientist at Apple made this decision? What happend to the "manage email on iPhone" Use Case?
So, how do i use the iPhone for email if all i can do is load the last 200 emails into the inbox?

You cannot have POP3 mailboxes on the iPhone. You can have IMAP mailboxes but you must create them on another client such as your desktop.
Even if you could create POP3 mailboxes there would be no way to sync them with your desktop. the POP3 protocol does not support mailboxes; it was developed at a time when having mail on your desktop was unusual, and no one at the time ever thought you would have more than one computer to read mail with.
One workaround is to get a free gmail account and set it to read your ISP mail. You can then set up the iPhone to sync with gmail via IMAP.

  • Why is my mail certificate for POP IMAP rejected?

I am running 10.6 server with the latest updates and suddenly I noticed that my mail account stopped working. When I investigated the issue it looks like that my SSL certificate in the server admin under mail -> security is gone. there are two fields for enabling SSL, one for SMTP-SSL where my certificate still shows up and is working just fine and the other one for IMAP and POP SSL shows 'no certificate'.
When I try to chose my certificate from the pulldown menu and click save, it takes a couple of seconds to save the status and then jump back to showing 'no certificate'.
when disabling ssl the mail server works as intended. changing or adding certificates with the certadmin also failed. maybe someone else has an idea on how to get the server-admin to use a certificate for the imap-pop-ssl again.
    thanks.

after googling around for quite some time was about to give up but then i stumbled onto some threads with the same problem.
one suggested to reinstall and set the server up clean from the beginning again, which wasnt really an option but there was one comment to it that helped me to find the solution. the person suggested to point the dovecot.conf file (located at /etc/dovecot/) to the /etc/certificates folder again. that was not quite the solution for me, but maybe it helps someone else.
what did the trick for me was actually to manually solve a bug from server-admin in the dovecot.conf file at /etc/dovecot. be sure to make a backup of the file first before you do any editing. if you change something in server-admin with your mail server and certificates, the server admin tends to append things to the dovecot.conf rather than replace the old text in there. so what you end up with is a long and messed up dovecot.conf file. in the dovecot.conf file is a section for ssl_ca_file, ssl_key_file and ssl_cert_file where only one term should stand, rather than multiple things. by deleting the unnecessary additions created by server-admin, or deleting everything the equal sign (after ssl_ca_file =) and then pointing the server-admin to the right certificate again, you may get rid of this bug.
this is the thread that helped me find this out: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2291114?threadID=2291114
    thanks

  • Firefox security settings will not save any of my passwords even when i click on the check box for saving passwords. please help.

When a pop-up comes up on the screen it will ask to save my password or not, well, I click on save password but it doesnt save any passwords even when I have the check box checked for remembering my passwords for certain sites it will not save any type of passwords at all. What am I doing wrong? I am using linux-mac OS user.

Simply because I don't think about using this option that takes more time to close... I always close ALL my windows with the X.
Firefox doesn't hang at exit also...
Using Firefox / Exit doesn't always save the bookmarks also... let's say there is 80% chances it will but not always... I noticed the first time I open firefox after booting the computer... Bookmarks won't be saved... But if I close firefox and re-open it, then it might save it... 50% guess...
I tried the safe mode, but since its closing firefox and re-open it... new saved bookmarks sometimes work, sometimes don't... it's pretty unstable...
Hopefully there is a solution to this problem in a near update, annoying... else I will simply reverse to firefox 3.6.16

  • Use mail app for POP account only?

This may be a stupid question, but my .mac trial has recently expired, and I do not wish to pay for an entire .mac account because I only enjoy using the e-mail portion of it. I have set up my gmail account so that the e-mail gets forwarded to my mail, but is there any way to send e-mails from my mail application using my POP account now that my .mac is expired?

I'm not sure I understand you rquestions - It sounds like you want to discontinue your .Mac account but continue to use your .Mac email - I do not believe that that is an option
If you are switching to gmail (or for that matter adding gmail) you can set up Apple Mail to handle your gmail account either as a POP account ( http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=13275&topic=12810 ) or an IMAP account ( http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=81379&topic=1281 ) - gmail help has instructions for this set up and many others as well - a great place to look
