Mail: new mailbox, archive, rebuild

I wanted to archive my mail because the inbox was too full.
So, I created an inbox "on my mac" and tried to move my messages there.
When I tried to move or copy my messages from my inbox to the on my mac folder, I got a message saying "an error occured while moving mail to mailbox."
I read about different solutions to this problem and decided to try the "rebuild" button. But, now all my messages and notes are gone.
(The messages are not on my msn mail server, so they can't be retreived that way.)
Is there any way to recover these emails and notes?

I've tried moving the envelope index and starting mail over again. That didn't work.
I also went to library - mail and moved the old POP folder to my desktop to restore it. There are only four of 2000 messages in that folder.
Any solutions?

  • Email account folder in /user/library/mail is much larger than full mailbox archive for the same account

    Hi,
I recently changed jobs and want to archive all email (with attachments in place) for the associated work email account.  I also plan to remove the old work email account (IMAP) from the list of active mailboxes in Apple Mail.  I don't want Spotlight searches for personal or current work email cluttered with results from my old job.
I have created an archive of the old work account by doing Mailbox Archive for all of the IMAP folders for that account.  The entire archive is 1.7GB in size.
Before I delete the old account from my Mail preferences, I want to make sure that I have really exported everything.  So I've compared the size of the new archive folder with that of the mailbox folder in users/.../Library/Mail for that same account.  That latter is 8.7GB in size.  Why the enormous difference?
Can the difference be attributed to lack of compression and indices (which would be rebuilt if I import the archive) for spotlight searches?  Am I missing something in the archive that I created?
I've created a zip of the system folder.  Can I easily restore this at a latter time if I delete the email account from my Mail preferences?
Is there a better way to achieve my objective?

I did find a "Recovered Messages" by looking in the the Mail client under "On My Mac" (I don't normally use that feature).  One message with an accicental 99MB attachment that I never sent, was recovered ~60times, consuming 5.7GB.
I deleted all of those, but the size ~/Library/Mail/xxxaccount folder did not change much.  It is still much larger than the Archive I created.  BTW, this is an IMAP account that was syncing with corporate GMail.

  • TS3276 I created a new mailbox in mail, but it does not show up in my list

I created a new mailbox in mail, but it does not show up in my list of mailboxes. Now I cannot change it or delete it. I keep getting an error message that I must resolve conflicts, but it won't let me change anything.  Can you help me fix this?

  • I have an edit button in my e mail account but when I press it I don't get the ''get new mailbox' button. How can I create e mail folders? Thanks.

I want to create e mail folders for my goole account. I go to the account and as suggested in the forum i tap on edit. Then instead of getting at the botton a button that says 'new mailbox' i get 2 boxes one red that says delete and one blue that says move. This is on an ipad 2. I have also an ipad 3 and there it does work. I have checked the settings in both ipads and they seem identical to me.
How can I create the foldesr then on teh ipad 2?
    Thanks a lot!

You need to be in the mailbox list for the account when you tap edit.
Sounds like you might be trying to do it from insider you Inbox.

  • How do I add a new mailbox to a mail account on iphone?

How do I add a new mailbox to a mail account on iphone?

One thing that might help out.
To add a folder or a mailbox to your existing account, you need to add it on your computer.
Now, this will work and reflect to the iphone if you are using an imap or exchange account.
If you are using a pop account, you will not be able to add a folder to an account on the iphone.
    Hope this helps.

  • I cannot find imported mail boxes. if i try to setup a new mailbox, it shows the existence of the mailboxes that i am looking for in the location drop down menu. where would they be located?

i cannot find imported mailboxes. if i try to setup a new mailbox, it shows the existence of the mailboxes under location/on my mac. they do not show up in the mailbox list. where would they be located so that i can retrieve them?

Did you quite Mail and relaunch?
Your imported mail is stored in a new mailbox called “Import.” To reorganize imported messages, create new mailboxes and drag folders and messages from the Import mailbox to other mailboxes. When you’re done, you can delete the Import mailbox.
If you don’t see your mailboxes in Mail, choose View > Show Mailbox List; empty mailboxes aren’t imported.

  • When I create a new mailbox in mail.app, the mailbox does not appear in the list of mailboxes

I am trying to create a new mailbox in mail.app, but it never appears in the list of mailboxes. This USED TO WORK.

Without seeing anything of what you did there is not much to go on except to say that when you create a classic tween you use a library-based object and it has to exist at both ends of the tween.  When motion guides come into play you usually have to fiddle around when making the link between the object and the motion guide to get the object to lock to it.

  • Wanted to know how to make new mailboxes in e mail.

Wanted to know how to make new mailbox in e mail.

If you are on iOS 5+ and it's an IMAP type account then you should get an Edit button at the top of the list of folders that you currently have on your email account. If it's a POP type account then you won't get the Edit button, and you are limited to the folders that you currently have.

  • Cannot create a new mailbox in Mail.app

After installing Maverick Mail update recently I no longer can create a Mailbox in Mailboxes. Before installing it I could add a few, but not anymore after the update. What should I do to fix it?

Might be corrupted Mail preferences after upgrading to Mavericks ...
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy / paste the following:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Preferences
Then click Go. Move the com.apple.mail.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Trash.
Restart your Mac then try adding a new mailbox.

  • Mail replied to in new mailboxes is not appearing in "Sent"

New Mac user. New MacBook Pro owner. Both wise choices.
I have created 12 mailboxes separate from the main inbox. When replying to mail in the new mailboxes, my replies are not appearing in "Sent" as they do when replying to email in the main inbox.
    Thanks for considering this question.

  • How do you add new mailboxes in mail? Tried what manual showed, didn't see edit option in mailboxes

How do you set up new mailboxes in mail? Followed manual's directions, didn't see edit option in mailboxes.

What type of email account is it ? As far as I know it only works with IMAP accounts (it doesn't work with my POP account), and you should get an Edit button at the top of the list of folders that are currently on that account.

  • 3 new mailboxes just showed up in Mail

Two odd things happened this past week - maybe at the same time, although I can't be sure.
    1) In Apple Mail, three new mailboxes for my .mac account suddenly appeared under "On My Mac": Deleted, Junk and Sent. They never used to be under "On My Mac", so I'm wondering if this is somehow related to the next item:
    2) My .mac account disappeared from my iPhone. My POP3 account remains.
I still get mail to the .mac account on my laptop, and it still shows up online when I go to the .mac website.
Any ideas what's going on here?

    Roger,
As to point 1), that would be consistent with a change in Mail Preferences/Accounts/Mailbox Behaviors to not store Deleted Messages, Junk, nor Sent Messages on the server, so thus they are On My Mac as soon as some action causes them to be created. Check the preferences settings.

  • I cannot see a new mailbox in mail with OS mavericks

I created a new mailbox but cannot see it.  I saw somewhere in the support groups that I should look for user/library/mail folder but cannot find that either.  I then decided to see if updating mail would help but when I started to install the update I got the message that my hard drive cannot support the update.  I have an OS X 10.9.3 in 3.06 GHz INterl Core 2 Duo iMac with 12GB RAM and 130 GB of free space on the hard drive.  Mail is version 7.3.

  • Mac Mail - Create New Mailbox Shortcut?

    Hi everyone,
Can you help? - I'd really like to be able to create a new mailbox using a keyboard shortcut, instead of navigating the menus.
What's the best way for me to do this?
    Thank you.

Hi, dibleyg. Welcome to the forums!
Have you tried using the "+" button at the bottom-left corner of the Mail window?

  • With Mail, does a new mailbox have to be under "On My Mac?"

I haven't been using Mail lately and I went back to it and having trouble.
I go to create a New Mailbox--I have 2 options, "On my Mac" or "RSS" Under Mailboxes in the upper left of the window is Inbox, Drafts, Sent and Trash--then there's a separate list under it called "On My Mac" Which includes mailboxes I imported from Eudora.
I don't understand, why can't I create a new mailbox under the top Mailboxes heading? What is the purpose of a separate "On My Mac" heading? It's all 'on my Mac' anyway!
I have imported my Inbox from Eudora but it is buried under "On My Mac">Import>Mail Folder>In. Is there a way to integrate the imports with the regular Inbox?
    Thanx,
    Ken

when you create a new mailbox in mail you are given the choice of either "on my mac", "rss" or under an imap email account if you have one. if you only have pop account(s) then your only choice is to create a mailbox "on my mac" as in it is stored on your mac, as opposed to an imap account where you have the choice of creating "on my mac" or under the imap tree of that account - which would then show on the server side of that imap account.
each email account has five main mailboxes: inbox, sent, drafts, junk, trash. the new mailboxes you want to create will not be created under these main mailboxes, but, again, either "on my mac" or under the imap tree of an imap account.
finally, if you want to create a folder for your rss feeds, then that would created under "rss"
    hope this helps
