Mail not connecting

When I open my mail app I get the message "Cannot Get Mail.  The user name or password for "sbcglobal" is incorrect".  It's been fine for 5 months and it was fine this morning.  I've checked settings, deleted user name and password and then retyped them in, shut down the Ipad....nothing helps.  Any suggestions?

Quit the mail app and restart.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
You can also try turning mail off in that account, restart the iPad and then turn Mail back on again and see if you can get mail.

  • Mail Not Connecting.. For Three Weeks

For the last three weeks Mail hasn't been connecting - I can't send or receive mail at all. It's basically the same problem as this person was having here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10543385&#10543385
iChat wasn't connecting either, until yesterday when I fiddled with the ports.
Firefox works fine but Mail, WoW, Steam, Transmission, etc. do not connect. I've done a malware scan and nothing turned up. My landlord says he isn't blocking any ports. This started about three weeks ago. One day, everything was working fine.. the next day nothing would connect.
Does anyone know what I could do to get Mail working again? Or what the problem may be?

I was rather hoping you were going to tell me that the PC was able to access email and that this problem is therefore restricted to the Mac. If it wasn't for the fact that you are unable to connect from the library as well I would suggest that it is most likely to be an issue with the router or ISP. I think it is still worth asking your landlord if they will check that the firmware is up to date on the router and if it isn't if they could update it, At least if they check it will eliminate something from the equation.
In the meantime I guess we can check your email ports. Go to https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 click on 'Proceed', then 'Lookup Specific Port Information' then enter 995 and click 'Jump' then click 'Probe THIS Port'. Repeat the probe for port 587. You can also ping the GMail server by going to /Applications/Utilities/Network Utility/Ping enter gmail.google.com and click Ping. Obviously I am concentrating on the ports that GMail will use and you can probe other ports used by your other apps that can't access the internet.
Try this, in Terminal (in your Utilities folder) enter
    dscacheutil -flushcache
    to flush the DNS cache
    Still in Terminal enter:
    sudo /sbin/ipfw -f flush
... and type in your password when prompted. This will clear out your existing Firewall rules so if you had any set up you will need to recreate them.
You could also go into System Preferences/Network and create a new 'Location' use that and test. It might be useful if you could also test your connection at the library or some other place using this 'test location'.
Report back with what you find and we will see where we can go from here. Hopefully you do find something because the ideas are starting to dry up and unless Golden Shoes or someone else can come up with something we may come to a dead halt here.
BTW are you sure you looked in the right place for the Receipts folder? It should be in /Library where I said, at the top level of your HD not to be confused with the one in your User folder or the one in System

  • ICloud on Mail not connecting to IMAP server since Lion update

Since the latest lion update, my Mail has been unable to recieve or send any mail.
Mail connection Dr is showing the following error; "Could not connect to this iCloud IMAP server."
Here's a few screenies showing the problems; http://imgur.com/a/VA7x1
Does anyone know what this could be? Thanks.

    Thanks for the responces, both!
I've tried re-signing in, in both mail and through system pref. I just get the following error at the starting "Welcome to mail" splash screen
The iCloud IMAP server “p04-imap.mail.me.com” is not responding. Try checking the network connection, and that the server name is correct. Otherwise, the server might be temporarily unavailable. If you continue, you might not be able to receive messages.
As to the mail server, I can only assume no! As far as I can remember it was just a case of username+password and I was good to go. Really stumpped as to why this has happened.

  • Mail not connecting regularly since updating to Yosemite

Ever since updating to Yosemite my mail program has had a really hard time staying connected to my email accounts.  Both my gmail and my icloud accounts are affected.  The settings have not changed, and this worked fine on all previous iterations of OSX.
Could not connect to iMap Server
connection to server "imap....."on port 993 timed out.
I've tried deselcting Use SSL, but it doesn't seem to fix the problem.  It just times out on port 143.
The only caveat to this is if I quit mail and re-launch, the program connects, but only for a little while.

When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

  • Mail not connecting through proxy

I transferred all information from my previous iBook (MacOS X 10.3.9) to my new MacBook (10.4.9) over the firewire link during installation. All settings have been accurately copied.
Mail works at home, using a cable modem and DHCP. It works with the external modem. However, it will not connect at the office using internal Ethernet through a proxy on our network, while the old mail with the same settings worked fine. Now, the (new) Mail Connection Doctor says: "Mail was unable to connect to the internet, etc. Nothing I do there will make it work. Two observations:
    1. Safari works fine, all the time.
    2. Mail does connect to the internet: when I collect my new messages with the external modem (out of necesity) and then change back to my office configuration, Mail will not connect to my mail servers as described, but it will effortlessly collect all the images embedded in HTML messages I have already downloaded.
    Help will be gratefully appreciated...

Hi Doc_Ski, and a warm welcome to the forums!
maybe the password to my account on the proxy is stored somewhere and all 3 browsers keep using it
Yes, it can be stored in Cookies.
Try making a new User & see if it works or asks for them.

  • MAIL NOT CONNECTING TO SERVER

Over the past few days I've noticed that Mail isn't connecting to my mail server.
Mail does connect when its first launched, but then won't connect when scheduled. If I quit from the software and re-launch, Mail connects and then the same thing happens again.
I've tried restarting and everything else I can think of, but this doesn't make any difference.
This can't be a server problem otherwise Mail wouldn't connect at all. Plus I've noticed that this happens from several different machines in several different locations.
I've noticed that a few other people have had the same problem but no-one seems to be able to come up with an answer.
    Can anyone help?

Anyone still having this type of problem should look at Lee's solution here:

  • TS1398 Safari and mail not connecting on ipad mini

Suddenly, at home or work, my ipad mini is acting up:
    - It connects to Wifi ok or using Verizon cellular data
    - But neither Safari or Mail can access the internet.
    - Yet Square, (which requires an internet connection) works fine
    - Also, all  my coontacts are gone...
I have tried all the suggested ideas to reboot, disconnec, reset Wifi etc... (which is not the answer as when I am on cellular network I have the same problems.)
All was workin gfine for months before...
    Any ideas??

I was at work and could not try all your suggestions.
Now that I am done, I turned on my ipad, and all is back to normal???  After being totally messed  up since last night.
But I do think that Lizdance idea about the icloud and password might be the answer.  Somehow apple straightened it out...???
Thanks for helping out!  What an amazing thing this internet is!!

  • Mail not connecting while "sleeping"

I'm having an issue getting my MBP to continue checking for mail when it is "sleeping." In the "energy saver" prefernce panel, I have my 'computer sleep' setting set to 'never.' Display sleep is at 15 min.
Before Mavericks, when I left my MBP with Mail open, it would check for mail every 10 minutes as if I were in front of the machine even though the display was asleep, and apply sort the junk from my inbox. This was a really helpful because when I checked my mail on my phone (I have an IMAP account), the spam would already be sorted out.
After Mavericks, when I come back to my computer and switch to Mail, I can see it that it hasn't been checking for mail, and hence not sorting out junk mail. It will then start to connect again, but only while I'm actually using the comptuer.
I understand that if my machine was asleep, it shouldn't check, but shouldn't it continue to do so since I have sleep set to 'never?'
Is there some other new setting in Mavericks that I'm missing that will help me fix this behavior?

I have exactly same problem with iMac and Mac mini.
Problem was already with Snow Leopard and continues with Lion.
Have you tried to use usb mouse or keyboard?
I have, and even they don´t operate.
As well iPhone/iPad mobile mouse don't operate.
PRAM & SMC reset done, no help.
If trying to ping with another computer, you can't find that Mac in problem. Not via WLAN or ethernet.
Disconnecting eg. a usb hard disk shows a message on screen that disk was not disconnect propely... etc, showing that computer is alive.
Mac mini is used only for watching TV, there are no other sofware installed except the OS.
Edit: Different versions of VLC installed on both Mac for watching videos / TV
All system is updatet to latest version.
MacBook Air don't have this issue at all.

  • Mail not connecting on some accounts

I am having a problem with Mail since the security update yesterday.
Keeping getting this against some of my email accounts.
'The server returned the error: Connections to the server “mail.plus.net” on the default ports timed out.'
Have tracked it down to the 'Use SSL' box being ticked and 'Allow insecure authentication' box not being ticked.
I have untucked and ticked these boxes and emails will coming in for a while and then stop working again.
When I go back into account settings the ticks have been swopped over again. This keep happening
but not with all of the accounts at the same time.
    Any ideas.

Hello and thanks for the post - I had the same problem this morning (same update/ISP) and now its solved by unchecking SSL and allowing insecure authentication - I set up thunderbird in the interim which gave me the warning that plusnet apparently does not support password encryption, which I guess is what caused the problem.

  • .mac mail not connected today

today on my main tower machine mail can't connect to the .mac mail servers. the account is grayed out in the account list view. i can access the email through webmail and i'm getting new email. i'm even getting it to work on my powerbooks mail client. what's going on with my tower's mail.app program?

Mailbox > Online Status says Take Offline for this account, right?
    correct.
Go to Preferences > Accounts > Advanced. Are Enable this account and Include when automatically checking for new mail checked?
    yes.
Open Window > Activity Viewer. Do you see there any activity related to this account?
    not at the moment.
What happens if you do Mailbox > Get New Mail for this account?
i get a very quick flash of the "clock dial" busy icon that all the mail accounts get. but the .mac (what i've named that mailbox) stays gray.
Does Mail display there the messages that it doesn't download?
    it does not.
Also, go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network > Show: Network Port Configurations, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list.
yes, that's obviously working since i'm on the internet at the moment.
this email address has been working for years and now suddenly it's acting "offline" without even the offline indicator. the odd thing is that it's doing it on multiple machines (3) on two seperate networks. so that rules out an isp issue. there must be a problem in the configuration of the account from apple's side otherwise how could it bork 3 different computers in two different location on different networks? even stranger is that the webmail part of it is still working and it's also showing up on my treo. it's all really weird.

  • IMAP Mail not connecting

I use Gmail, where I have 2 accounts (one for spam, one for personal) I access it through my home iMac, my iPhone and my MAc Book Pro.
Everything was working fine until I tried to send a particularly large file (My bad, I know) and now the IMAP won't connect on all 3 of my Apple Mail devices FOR JUST ONE OF THE ACCOUNTS. The account which I tried to send the large email.
The offending email was immediately deleted, yet I still have no access to IMAP.
I can log in through a browser and I am still getting email through my spam account.
I tried resetting the Captcha and no dice.
I also deleted the account on my MBP and re set it upas a test, but it's still not working.
Could this be a Gmail thing? or is it a Mac thing?
    Any ideas would be helpful

    Thanks for the responces, both!
I've tried re-signing in, in both mail and through system pref. I just get the following error at the starting "Welcome to mail" splash screen
The iCloud IMAP server “p04-imap.mail.me.com” is not responding. Try checking the network connection, and that the server name is correct. Otherwise, the server might be temporarily unavailable. If you continue, you might not be able to receive messages.

  • Mail not connecting well with exchange

I connect with office 365 exchange for my mail.
Since Yosemite, I'm getting really inconsistent syncing.  Sometimes it's just not receiving, sending, transferring email etc at all.
I have to keep restarting the program, but it inevitably happens again.
    Very frustrating!!

Me too and it's causing a world of hurt since I use this at work. Sometimes it acts like it cannot send an email and I hit resend and people tell me they got my email 2-3 times or not at all.  Some emails stay in outbox for 10-20 mins.  Also not syncing well.  Some emails I read on my phone act like there are unread on my mac.  I have mine set to get new mail every minute, but sometimes 15 minutes go by before I see a new email.  I get endless "Drafts" since it thinks I'm never finishing sending my emails.  I called Apple this am and a senior tech acted like he had never heard of this happening.  Now I do know Microsoft is having some issues with 365 in the last 4-5 days, but still my Windows based co-workers hardly see any issues, so it's got to be Yosemite.  It was fine in Mavericks.

  • Mail not connecting, Ipad 2, 5.1

We have entered all the correct details, deleted the account and re entered info again, restarted the mail app and the Ipad, updated software yet it keeps coming up when we open it the user name or password are incorrect. Our wi-fi connection is working. Please help! We can access the email account with the same details from the computer. Also none of our applications will update.

I also have the exact same problem. Has become worst and worst. A month ago or so I would not be able to see any wifi, and then after a few hours the ipad2 would see the wifi network again. Have been struggling for 5 days now and it still can't see any network. I have Ipad2 with v5.1 on (Also did it on the previous 4.2??)
Please tell us how you fixed it? I am desperate!! Thanks!
