Mail not downloaded from server

I've never had any problem reading my mail but am now getting the following message: Message has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it. As far as I can see, the account is online. If I restart the computer, this sometimes fixes the problem temporarily. Please help.

Hello, and welcome to the Discussions.
If you are running 10.3.9, as the info below your post reports, then you likely have an Overstuffed Mailbox. The message you are getting is the result of errors in the index for the mailbox.
First, confirm your version of OSX, and if 10.3.9, then read:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=121837
and the important link within it of:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25812
After observing the size of this mailbox (is it the Inbox?), report that result.

  • Message "not downloaded from server. You need to take this account online

After upgrading to 10.4.9, when I click on any of the old emails in my inbox I get the message "this message not downloaded from server. You need to take this account online in order to download it."
I can still read all email in any other mailbox.
I can read all email received after upgrading.
    I appreciate any help.

You upgraded to 10.4.9 from what?
If you upgraded from Mac OS X 10.3 or earlier, the problem is that the conversion from Mail 1.x to Mail 2.x is broken. Take a look at the following thread to better understand the problem:
Help! "You need to take this account online in order to download it."
More specifically, if this is a POP account, the following procedure should allow you to fix the Inbox problem. A similar procedure should allow you to fix other mailboxes that might also be affected:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong while trying to fix the problem. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is stored.
    3. Create a new folder on the Desktop and name it however you wish (e.g. Inbox Old). It doesn’t need to have an .mbox extension.
    4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/.
    5. Move the files mbox and Incoming_Mail out of INBOX.mbox, into the Inbox Old folder just created on the Desktop. These files contain all the messages that were in the mailbox before the upgrade to Tiger, and maybe even some messages that had been deleted. mbox is the most important. Incoming_Mail may or may not be present.
    6. Move any strangely-named Messages-T0x... folders to the Desktop (not into the Inbox Old folder). These folders are to be deleted after fixing the problem. They are temporary folders created during an import or an indexing process, and Mail should have deleted them when done. Their presence is a clear indication that something didn’t work as expected. If you’ve been using Mail after the conversion and have already tried to fix the problem by rebuilding the mailbox or something like that, they might contain messages that are neither in Messages proper nor in the mbox file, so keep them around until the problem is fixed.
    7. Move everything else within INBOX.mbox, except the Messages folder, to the Trash.
The result of the above should be that INBOX.mbox contains the proper Messages folder only, and the Inbox Old folder on the Desktop contains the mbox and Incoming_Mail (if it exists) files only. Now, proceed as follows:
    8. Open Mail.
    9. The account’s Inbox should properly display in Mail as many messages as *.emlx files are in ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/Messages/. If that’s not the case, select the mailbox in Mail and do Mailbox > Rebuild.
    10. In Mail, do File > Import Mailboxes, choose Other as the data format, and follow the instructions to import the Inbox Old folder that’s on the Desktop.
As a result of doing the above, some messages may be duplicated now. Andreas Amann’s Mail Scripts has a Remove Duplicates script that you may find useful.
Do with the imported mail whatever you wish. You may move the messages anywhere you want and get rid of the imported mailboxes afterwards.
If all is well and you don’t miss anything, the files on the Desktop can be deleted, although you may want to keep them for a while, just in case.
Take a look at the following article (also referenced in the thread I mentioned at the beginning of this post) to learn what you might have done before upgrading to minimize the risk of this happening, and what you may do after fixing the problem to avoid similar issues from happening in the future. DON’T do now what the article suggests, though, as that would make things worse in the current situation:
    Overstuffed mailbox is unexpectedly empty
Ask for any clarifications or if you need further assistance.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder.

  • FOUND SOLUTION TO EMAIL ISSUE - "message not downloaded from server"

It took me 4 days to figure it out but there is a solution to the problem "the messsage has not been downloaded from server" and "the message has no content".
I do not have to set up "push" accounts from yahoo or gmail and it works with my corporate email.
Apple can reach me at <Message was edited by: Host> to discuss this issue.

I'm not a computer technician, and if you were to give me a few days looking at the problem, i'm sure I or anyone else could provide a solution. I'm not too bothered about the message appearing 50% of the time as i'm usually within easy reach of a Laptop or PC or can find another method to get access to my email.
So i'm not pi**ed off that you have found a solution. I'm just trying to obtain information for a post that says "FOUND SOLUTION TO EMAIL ISSUE - "message not downloaded from server" in the Apple HELP FORUMS...

  • How to fix message not downloaded from server

    Hello everyone,
My name is Joshua Kahley, and I am an IT technician in charge of handeling email related issues in my company.  We host our own web and email server and since the I-OS 7 update we have had a problem where many messages cannot be retrieved from our email server.  I confirmed with my own phone that this issue did not exist prior to I-OS 7, messages that displayed fine before were no longer be readable on I-OS 7 when i upgraded.
The error message I recieve is "This message has not been downloaded from the server"
I'm not sure if this is a problem that can be solved on the phone itself as I have tried changing numerous settings.  Has anything changed with the way I-OS 7 handles IMAP messages that my require us to change settings on our server?  No other email provider has this issue as far as I can tell; in addition, all of our customers have the same issue (they all have their email through our servers)
If anyone has any insight into this I would greatly appriciate it.
    ~Joshua Kahley

No fix, but I found a work-around for a single message that iOS email refuses to download at http://www.bitcraft.com.au/iphone-mail-app-says-this-message-has-not-been-downlo aded-from-server/
    that reads:
...here’s a quick fix… Forward the message. Just click Forward and it will ask you “Download rest of message first?”. Say yes and then you will see the old message quoted in the forward. Now if only Apple would make than an option without having to ‘fake’ forward it…
The above worked for me when I encountered "This message has not been downloaded from server” on my iPad 3 running iOS 7.1.1.

  • Email not downloaded from server

HI my iPhone 5 doesn't always let me open my emails. "Email not downloaded from the server" appears on random emails, usually ones with pictures?? help!!

This happens to me too from time to time.  Seems to be connected to the size of the download attached to the mail and the fact that you are using the mobile data network. Try to use Wi-Fi instead, this works for me.

  • Deleted pop mail not deleted from server

mail retrieved from pop acct & deleted, and trash emptied, is not deleted from server, so it gets re-retrieved.
settings>delete from server> when removed from inbox, but the msgs are still on the server as viewed from the isp's web interface.

    been there, done that;-}
    Incoming mail server (POP3): pop.verizon.net
    Incoming Server Port Numbers: 995
    Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.verizon.net
    Outgoing Server Port Numbers: 465
it seems mail.app is designed for imap, in that msgs can't be deleted when d/l'd by default, but must be config'd "when moved from inbox"

  • Mail 'not downloaded from the server'

Recently, I have been getting the message
"The message from Xxxxxxx (this is my account name) concerning “Xxxxxxxx (subject of the message)” has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it."
This happens whenever I try to open old mesages, sent or received. But usually only happens after the program has been working fine for a few hours!
If I quit Mail and restart it, all is OK for a while. But it usually happens again.
Can anyone offer a solution, please?
    Very many thanks!

    Mike,
In addition, the followup if you are using Mail 1.3, and the statement that this message is almost certain to be caused by an Overstuffed Mailbox, typically caused by size and large numbers of messages of diverse types is to see:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=121837
and the important link it contains of:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25812
There are a few conditions caused by files that might not be needed, if any were leftover from Jaguar's mailbox structure, but somewhat rare. After you read these, let me know what you find, and any questions you may have.

  • Mail - "message not downloaded from server"

I know that the message was download from the server because it was todays mail from this first thing morning. This happens once or twice a week, I will go to view a message from a couple of hours ago and i will get this meesage.
    Anyone have any Ideas??
    Thanks

Thank you for your help, that did the trick. My mail box was too large, once I emptied my trash the problem has not repeated itself. I thought I had my trash set to empty upon quiting. My Mail box was 1.6 gigs and I was trying to keep it clean by throwing old mail and junk mail away, but it built up and I did not realize it.

  • Mail stops downloading from server

    Hello all -
    We are running 10.3.9 on a 733MHz Tower G4.
We have four separate user accounts, each of which uses the same Mail application (1.3.11). With three of the accounts, there is no problem. However, there is a goofy problem when using Mail on the fourth account.
After successfully running Mail for "a while" (downloading, sending, etc), we suddenly get the following error message when attempting to look at any mail:
"The message from (what we're trying to look at) has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it."
We are, in fact, online and have been opening and reading mail messages for "a while."
This error message appears not only when we try to open a new mail, but also when we try to look again at a mail we've already opened! No matter what we try to read (new or already opened), we get only the error message, not the mail message.
Quitting Mail and restarting it solves the problem, for a while. But it eventually rears its ugly head again.
    Any ideas - ??
    Thanks in advance -
    - The OldFart

What type of account is this (POP, IMAP, .Mac)?

  • Messsages not downloading from server

Even though my account is online, I get the message "This message has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it." After a few days they can be viewed, but what's stopping me from downloading them into mac mail and viewing them immediately?

Try the steps in Mail: Messages seem to be missing, or "Message has not been downloaded" alert appears when opening.

  • Inaccurate "Message not downloaded from server" message

I recently started seeing error messages like the one below appearing in the body of my Mail messages right after reading new messages from the POP server at my work (a large hospital). I'm running OS 10.3.9 on a dual 2GHz PowerPC G5. None of the other Mac users in my group at work are getting this type of error message:
"The message from "Doe, John" <[email protected]> concerning “RE: New spheres” has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it."
I don't believe this has anything to do with our mail server at work. My account is "on-line" when I see this message, and taking it off-line and then on-line again does not correct the problem.
When I see it, this error message appears as the only text in many or all of the e-mails in my "InBox" -- and it replaces the actual text of each message -- even in messages that were previously downloaded and read successfully. I have never seen this message appear in any other mail folders -- I have only seen it in mail messages in my InBox.
This error message is clearly not accurate because when I see it in one or more emails, I can simply quit Mail and then re-start it and then I can see all of my In-Box mail messages correctly again, (without downloading anything again from the server).
I have tried deleting the mail preference file, and I have run the utility program Yasu to try to clean things up. Nothing has worked to fix this bug.
    Suggestions?
    Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    This is not a bug.
All email clients have limits and the recommended mailbox size limit for Jaguar or Panther Mail is 1GB and for Tiger Mail, 2GB.
This error message indicates an "overstuffed" mailbox issue which means the account's inbox mailbox has either approached or exceeded 1GB in size or the mailbox has some corruption. An "overstuffed" mailbox issue can occur at any mailbox size but is more likely to occur depending on the number and size of message attachments contained in a mailbox and especially as a mailbox approaches or exceeds 1GB in size for Jaguar or Panther Mail.
This has been eliminated with Tiger Mail since the mbox format has been improved over previous Mail.app versions but there is still a recommended mailbox size limit (2GB) with Tiger Mail.
Quit the Mail.app first and using the Finder go to Home > Library > Mail > this POP account named folder (named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account) > INBOX.mbox.
Move the INBOX.mbox to the Desktop.
Launch Mail and a new INBOX.mbox will be created automatically by Mail within the account named folder.
This will allow the Mail.app to function properly again while working on the old INBOX.mbox moved to the Desktop to recover the existing messages.
Control-click on the old INBOX.mbox moved to the Desktop and at the menu window that appears, select Show Package Contents.
List the package content file names and size each here.
This information is required to determine the next step to take to recover the existing messages.
For future reference, since an account's Inbox mailbox is usually the most active mailbox and more prone to minor corruption over time, it is not a good idea to use an account's Inbox mailbox as the final storage location for all received messages not deleted.
Better to utilize user created "On My Mac" location mailboxes to sort received messages by category.
Before upgrading to Tiger Mail, I didn't allow any mailbox to exceed 500MB or so in size, used the Rebuild Mailbox function on the most active mailboxes on a regular basis (once a month or so depending on activity) and I never experienced an overstuffed mailbox issue.

  • Mail not downloading from pop server

I hit the get mail button, and I see "Incoming Messages" working away in the bottom left corner, but the messages don't get downloaded to my imac.
I checked the Account INfo and the mail is on the POP server, but hasn't downloaded to my mail app.
    What can I do?

This is bad. My Inbox now shows empty. I have checked the mbox/messages folder, and it contains a lot of emix files, which are readable, but strangely, they are very old, many from previous years. There are no recent mails in these emix files. Yet I only keep the last couple of months' emails in my Inbox!
There are over 600 messages on the POP server, and I have stopped checking mail, in case Mail tells the server I have them, and my pending mails are deleted on the server. Checking Mail does not seem to show any new mails in my Inbox, although SpamSieve has logged several. (I have saved SpamSieve's log, so I can have its summary of emails I've supposedly received, and I can email their senders about them later if I have indeed lost these emails.)
I have turned off TimeMachine, so it doesn't overwrite my previous Inbox. When I check it, it contains emails up to the point where I upgraded to Leopard (21 November), but when I open these emix files, they only have a title, no contents.
I am confused and worried. Before upgrading to Leopard, I had a working mail client, and a lot of email in my Inbox. After upgrading, I can't receive mail, and my Inbox shows as empty. I have repaired permissions and restarted, more than once. Console has no comment: indeed, it shows no information after the 21st November (the day I upgraded), although other logs, such as the SpamSieve log, continue to update, and crash logs continue to be written. There are older "console" logs from previous dates, but the current "console" only goes up to 21st November.
Please advise me. I am frightened to do anything else myself, in case I lose my data. My concentration is very limited, but I can follow simple instructions.
I do not understand why Leopard Mail has rearranged my mailboxes. I had quite a few extra mailboxes within my overall account, and I filtered mailing list messages into them. (These mailboxes still contain their mail, including some messages which SpamSieve logs as received today.) These extra mailboxes are listed as part of "On My Mac", which I thought used to be the whole hierarchy, but after upgrading to Leopard, is only a sub-section of the hierarchy, listed after Reminders and Smart Mailboxes (I installed MailTags once, but had problems with it, so I removed it). Could this rearrangement of mailboxes be part of the current problem?
Thankyou for any help you can offer.

  • I have an e-mail showing up that is stating "not downloaded from server".  I cant delete it. Using ipad 1, with ms outlook

    Please help...

Try deleting it from the mail server. If you can't delete it on the actual mail server (ie: from gmail, outlook, etc), that's more than an iPad problem. If you're really having issues, and you removed it on the actual server (but it's still on the iPad), remove the mail account (Settings>General>Mail,Contacts,Calendars>Select the Account>Delete Account) and then re-add the account. If you can configure it with IMAP that would be preferred.

  • Email not downloading from server - mail activity says there is

Hi all - I have an email account with mail on the server, which i can see on by logging in through a web interface.
However, retrieving new mail yields no messages, and a mysterious progress bar in the Mail activity window that says it's downloading "280 of 280 messages" which looks like this:
    http://localhostr.com/files/d2e3f0/odd.png
It comes up and then goes away within a second or to, but now messages come through.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

Thanks for the suggestion of using system preferences - could you please give me a little more information on how to do that?
I went into System preferences - network - advanced then clicked on the DNS tab where i saw 2 window (DNA and SEARCH DOMAINS). If i try to past the smpt in there (in the form smtpout.xxxxxxx.net) it simply pastes this: .eceee.e
If I try the same thing into the other window (SEARCH DOMAINS) it pastes just fine.

  • IPad Mail not deleting from server

Does anyone else have this problem? I have my mail accounts set so that they should delete emails from the server as soon as they are deleted from ipad. It doesn't seem to work though.. as I just came back home after a trip and all the dozens of email messages came flooding into my Mac inbox
Does anyone have any suggestions? Do I also need to delete the mail on the ipad's mail trash perhaps...

SO SORRY for not responding.... For some reason I have not been getting emails saying there are replies to this topic.
As it happened, I thought I had solved the problem, but I haven't...
In the settings for my email accounts, I am offered the option of my emails being deleted from their server as soon as I delete them from the iPad email inbox. However, when I choose this option, they are not deleted.
DAVID I do not have the setting that you describe available for my email accounts either... It seems that different setting options appear according to the nature of the email account that is being set up.
It is clear to me that the way I have set things up is correct for what I want though, as it's very clearly stated in Settings... It's just not happening....
