Mail not Flagging / Mark as Unread

I have recently been having an issue with OS X Mail where messages that I mark as flagged and/or unread/read do not update straight away. Mail has to be quit and relaunched before the changes become visible. Has anyone else noticed this behaviour? The problem is across a number of different computers running latest 10.5.

George--
I have a similar problem with IMAP. If I have 5 messages that are unread in my inbox they all turn to read when new mail comes in. Did you ever figure anything out with your issue?

Some read mail items remain marked as unread (even after I've read them).
I have to manually mark them as read.
This doesn't happen to all mail items, just some.
    How can I fix this?

A few discoveries I made this morning.
One is that disabling GPGMail seems to solve the problem, or at least significantly reduce its occurrence.
Another is that with GPGMail enabled, it seems to depend on how quickly one opens an email. I can't say for sure that this is a hard and fast rule, but messages staying unread seems to be more of a problem if you've just entered the folder or just been viewing another message and suddenly change to an unread one. It's as though GPGMail causes Mail to need some time to think things through.
A third is that if you have multiple mail accounts, a workaround to reset the unread count exists. If a mail folder in Account One is having problems, you can switch to a folder in Account Two, possibly wait an interval of time (not sure what that interval would be), then switch back to your original Account One folder. That seems to force a refresh of the unread count, without needing a folder rebuild (with consequent loss of expanded threads, etc).
However, for the time being, I've just disabled GPGMail. I can re-enable it as needed, by the looks of it, and it's not as though I've really needed to use it yet.
I could wish, though, that Apple offered proper GPG support, or at least that they made enough of their API available that third parties could do a proper job instead of an ugly and somewhat broken hack. (I've also seen complaints that Apple like to change their API without telling anyone, just to keep third-party developers on their toes =P.) I suppose another problem is lack of available time. Which I also suffer from, so I don't think a "real solution" is forthcoming from this quarter, at least.

    Hey there Fabian,
If I understand correctly you are going to Settings > Mail, Contacts, and Calendars > Add Account but that last option is not usable because it is gray. In testing this for you, I was able to reproduce this by enabling Restrictions and denying Account Changes. You can configure that with this article:
About Restrictions (parental controls) on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Mail Rules missing "mark as unread" and "mark as unflagged"

I'm adding some new rules in Mac Mail and just noticed that there is no option to "mark as unread" in my list. My friend has it coming up, but it isn't there for me.
When I click to add a new rule, the drop-down for Perform actions lists "delete", "mark as read" and "mark as flagged". I'm missing "mark as unread" and "mark as unflagged".
Why would I be missing those options?
    Thanks,
    Morton++

Mail rules doesn't offer these options which is why you don't have them. Your friend must be mistaken. and anyway since the rules are only applied to new messages there is no point in having the option to mark them as unread - they are unread already. You can add a rule to unflag messages using apple script but if I'm not mistaken all new messages are unflagged by default too so there is no point for this one either.

  • Old e-mails keep reappearing marked as unread. How can I stop this? I am importing from a Hotmail.co.uk account.

For the last few weeks old, read messages have been reappearing in my inbox marked as unread thus triggering a new message alert on my phone, tablet and pc. I have archived all messages up to and including December 2013 which made no difference.

Is it possible to remove old messages from the Hotmail server itself? Maybe that would be a good idea, if possible.

  • New mail is not being marked as unread

This just started today. I have my preferences set so that unread mail is in Bold type. I see by the Mail Activity Viewer that new mail is coming in. Mail chimes that I have new email, but SOME of the new email is not in bold type. I say SOME because it is only a few of the messages that have this problem. I have repaired permissions, changed the mail prefs and then changed them back. Does anyone have any idea as to what is going on and how to fix it?
    Thanks in advance.
PS: I first tried searching the forum, but couldn't find an answer or even a similar problem.

    Thanks for the response David.
It is a POP account, actually several accounts. I am going to monitor it to see if it affects all accounts, or just one.
I am currently accessing it from my regular Mac, the G5, I only use webmail or the iBook when I am traveling.
This afternoon I ran MacJanitor and have not yet seen the problem occur, but there hasn't been too many emails coming in.
I update this thread if I find a solution and if running the CRON tasks apparently fixed it.

  • Flag / Mark as unread - SMS on iPhone

Is there any way, or any application that I can download that will enable me to mark my text messages as unread once I have read them (like you can in Mail).
I normally read my messages and then mark them as unread to reply to them later!
    Thanks

There's no way to do this on the iPhone, and I haven't heard of any App's that could do a similar job...
Would be hand though, but usually if i've time to open the Text, then i've time to reply.

  • Using Applescript to track Mail "Mark as Unread"

    Hi,
I'm new to actionscript, I've never written anything using it. I'm a web developer, so I know JS, PHP and languages like that, but Applescript seems quite different to me.
Anyways, I would like to know if it is possible to have a script in the background with an event handler that will trigger additional actions when a message is marked as unread?
Pretty much, I want some code (that I will work out later) to be executed when a user marks a message as unread in Mail. ("Message"->"Mark"->"As Unread" OR ⇧⌘U)
    Thanks

    I'm new to actionscript
    You mean AppleScript, right?
I would like to know if it is possible to have a script in the background with an event handler that will trigger additional actions when a message is marked as unread?
Not directly. The ideal way of doing this would be for Mail.app to have some kind of option to attach AppleScripts to events within the application. It's entirely possible to do within the OS, but few applications take advantage of it - that includes Mail.app, so there's no way to have Mail.app call your script directly.
The closest you could get would be a background script that silently polled Mail.app for the status of all messages and somehow detect when a message went from Read to Unread. This could be unwieldy, especially if there are many, many messages in the mailbox - you pretty much have to keep track of every read message and scan for any unread messages that are in the previous read messages list. This option doesn't work if you want to perform some real-time action such as interact with the user since there would always be some delay between the user action (marking the message unread) and the script noticing it.

  • Sent Mail Marked As Unread

In Lion Mail, sent mail is being marked as unread. Why is that? Can I change that behaviour or is this a bug maybe?

    A couple further details...
    Using a .me account
I sent 3 emails, one after the other, to my work address, 2 of the 3 show up as Unread in the Sent, though all 3 were received by my work address
Using the same .me outgoing server for all emails
There are no Rules in effect that would cause this
This seems to happen at random to only maybe 1 or 5 sent emails
They are going to both .me and other domains.

  • Mail 5.1 not correctly marking messages on the Exchange Server as read

Since I've upgraded to Lion, this has been a recurrent and persistent problem for which Apple has provided no good solution. Even though all the messages from my Exchage account have indeed been read, the little number in the red circle on the dock Mail icon as well as the the number of unread messages next to the Exchange inbox in the side pane in Mail will indicate some unread messages. I've tried deleting all the Mail-related files in the Library folder and reinstalling all of my accounts on several occasions. But it's only a matter of time before it returns. Right now it shows 2 unread messages when all have been read. And by the way, this happens with both my computer at work and at home. No such problem with my iPhone or iPad, or if a log in with a *gasp* Windows machine. Anyone see this or know how to fix? Many thanks.

I have been having the same problem since last Thursday.  Spent nearly 2 hours on Tech Support with a 2nd level technician.  I was at home with 2 iPhones, 2 iPads and a couple computers available to be used while we investigated the issue.  It is a very strange behavior.  Here is a summary of the results of our efforts.
1 - If you mark AOL mail as read on an Mac using Mavericks or Snow Leopard, it will be marked as read on iOS 7 on your iPhone or iPad within seconds.
2 - If you open an AOL e-mail on your iPhone - by touching/loading it - it will stay marked as read on your iPhone, iPad and on your computer.
3 - But, if you use the EDIT function - and try to mark an email as read (or mark all as read using the command at the bottom) the iPhone will initially mark the emails as read but they will NOT be marked as read on the AOL server.  Your computer and any other iOS 7 devices will not change the e-mail to read.  At some point, typically within 5 minutes, the message will reappear on the iPhone as unread.
It seems to be tied to the EDIT function in iOS 7 mail as Read, Flag, Move, and Delete all fail to work in the same fashion.  It is also a one way error - iPhone iOS 7 to the AOL IMAP server - but only if you take action without viewing/loading the e-mail.
Note that we tried multiple mail account deletes, various settings deletes, and even a total iPhone reset.  Nothing fixed this error.
AOL mail on my iPad, using iOS 6, works as it should.  AOL mail on my wife's iPad, using iOS 7, has the exact same problem as my iPhone 5s.
The 2nd level technician has concluded it is an iOS 7 bug and forwarded the information to the engineering team.
If others are having this issue too - please add it to this thread.  We need to make sure Apple understands it is a wide spread issue that needs attention.

  • Why can I not flag an e-mail in the new iOS6?

Seriously, can we only mark a message as unread?  I was already having problems with my iPhone4S not showing flagged messages on my iMac, but the fact that I can't even flag a message on iOS6 is a further step backwards!

I think it depends on the type of mail provider you have configured.  I have a standard Gmail and flagging works (flag and mark unread).  I also have another Gmail account set up as an Exchange provider so that I could receive push notifications and the only option for that provider is "Mark as Unread".  I know that this has changed since iOS5 and it's annoying.
    Cheers

  • How do I delete all my sent emails on IPad 2?  I only get 2 options: Flag and Mark as Unread.  It doesn't let me Mark All of them.

Have been trying to figure out how to delete all of my sent mail on my IPad 2...it only lets me choose to Flag or Mark as Unread.  It will take me hours to go through and check off each one.  I have 2 years of emails in my sent folder!

Unfortunately, there is no way to select them all at once to delete them. You do have to select one at a time.

  • All mail is marked as unread following iOS 7 install.  How do I fix that?

All mail is marked as unread following iOS 7 install.  How do I fix that?

Ignore my last question.  This was entirely user inflicted.
The count that shows on the mail icon on the iPad shows the number of email in the "New" folder on my AOL account.  Some of these are emails that I read and then marked as unread.  In the previous versions, these "read and then marked as unread' emails did not show in the count on the iPad icon...but now they do.  Not a big deal...it's just different.
    Thanks for your help.
