Mail not remembering password

Since the 10.5 upgrade, Mail continues to ask for my password when it goes out to check mail even with the "save" box checked.
I ran Keychain First Aid.

I had the same problem every once in a while with Tiger and now with Leopard. Sometimes, it works properly, i.e. remembering the passord. Sometimes, I am asked for my password repeatedly whether I check the "save" box. I have two different e-mail providers (gmail.com and gmx.net). I only get the troubles with the second one from time to time over a period of time.
I could "fix" it with the following workaround:
Mail > Preferences > General > Check for new mail: every 5 minutes.
Before, I had had set it to "check every 1 minute" what often resulted in the "loss" of the password.

• FIXED! How I fixed Mail not remembering passwords, keychains, certificates

As noted in this lengthy thread, hundreds of users who upgraded to Leopard were experiencing their email accounts not remembering their passwords in Mail. Since the upgrade to Leo, I was seeing this, too. Every hour or so, I'd need to reenter all the passwords to all 8 emails that I had. I also was seeing odd keychain behavior with Safari. I'd need to re-enter passwords and certificates over and over again.
From reading the above thread, a couple posters had come up with a fix. I modified it slightly, and for the past 3 days, everything has worked perfectly. Note that I'm no geek, don't really get why it worked, and basically attacked this like a man with a shotgun shooting a mouse. So what I did may break your system or cause you to die from cancer. But here's the steps I did that eliminated the problem
1. I quit Mail & Safari.
2. I opened up Keychain Access (in Utilities) and deleted everything I possibly could. I initially tried to just delete Mail and Safari-related stuff, but that didn't work, so I deleted everything the system allowed me to delete.
3. I ran Keychain First Aid (Menu: Keychain Access). I re-ran it about 4 times until it couldn't repair anything further (there was a dozen things it said it couldn't change, but there you go).
4. I then hooked up a second Mac, via Firewire, that had recently had a clean install of Leopard on it. I dragged the Mail app file over into the applications folder had it replace the existing Mail app.
5. I did the same with Safari, replacing the existing Safari app file.
(NOTE: I hear you can do essentially the same thing for steps 4 and 5, using your original Leopard install discs and a program called Pacifist, but that was more techie than I felt comfortable with. But I hear it does the same thing as copying over clean virgin copies of Mail and Safari, as I did in steps 4 and 5)
6. I then repaired permissions (via the Disk Utility in Utilities). I think this step is a little like smudging with sage, or chanting, but in fact both the new Safari and the Mail app needed thousands of repairs, so perhaps this wasn't as voodoo as suspected.
7. I then restarted the Mac. Upon opening up Mail, I did, of course, need to re-enter all of the passwords again. But that was it. That was 3 days ago, and I've been groovy ever since. I've restarted the apps, and restarted the Mac numerous times. So far, all passwords and keychains and certificates have remained solid.
So there you go. How I Fixed a Hair-Pulling Glitch in my Otherwise Nice Leopard System.

Did you copy both key3.db and signons.sqlite to the profile folder?
You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
It is possible that there is a problem with the files key3.db and signons.sqlite that store the encrypted names and passwords in Firefox.
Rename the files key3.db and signons.sqlite in the Firefox profile folder.
You can add .old to the file names (key3.db.old and signons.sqlite.old) or move them to another folder to make it possible to undo the action.
You need to set a new Master Password after renaming or deleting key3.db and all currently saved passwords are lost.
If that has worked then you can remove the renamed files that are no longer needed.
• Why was "Mail not remembering passwords" thread locked out?

The problem wasn't resolved, yet the thread has been locked out! Does Apple monitor this board? If so, could someone from Apple at least acknowledge that there is a Mail-related problem and that someone is looking into it? The problem wasn't resolved with the latest Leopard release and even a cursory reading through the aforementioned thread reveals a lot of very frustrated users!

• Firefox 8.0 remembering username even though I've set it to not remember passwords. What do I do?

I downloaded the new version of Firefox. I had the old version set to not remember passwords. The old version also deleted the username, which is what I wanted it to do. • Firefox will not remember passwords even tho the box is checked and there are no exceptions listed. The little bar asking to save passwords doesn't even come up.

After an online session, Firefox (6.0.1) crashed and a crash report was sent. After that, Firefox would not start and the crash window kept coming up. I uninstalled it and did a new install. It works fine now except it will not remember passwords even tho the box to save is checked and there are no exceptions listed. The bar asking to save does not come up.

I have been locked from my itunes account as I could not remember password and it is on an email address we no longer have. I also cannot remember the security questions. How do I retrieve all this? Help! Note that I am doing this query through a work-related apple id.

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions. To do this, click here and pick a method; if that page doesn't list one for your country or you're unable to call, fill out and submit this form.

Do you mean names and passwords in the Password Manager or do you mean that you are no longer logged on to (remembered by) websites after closing and restarting Firefox?
There is a difference between remembering the name and password in the Password Manager and a "remember me" check box on a web page.
The latter usually involves the creation of a special "remember me" cookie that is stored on your computer and that is send to the server.
If that "remember me" cookie is removed or gets corrupted or is not send to the server then the server won't remember you and you need to sign in once again.
• Anyone know why, firefox does not remember password for a site when you remove password from the view password site? I removed a pasword in the view password window and now it not asking me to remember and also it is not remembering the password when I go

Anyone know why, firefox does not remember password for a site when you remove password from the view password site? I removed a password for a site that was not remembering the correct password for the "view password" window and now it does not guess the password and does not remember the password for that site. All other sites are being remembered.
== This happened ==
Every time Firefox opened
== After I deleted the password from the view password window.

The saved password feature worked well, but the site I had saved the password for required that I change the password. I have found no way to update the password in Firefox. After I deleted the saved password, Firefox did not ask if I wanted the new password saved. When this happened before, I removed and re-installed Firefox, and then it worked. I hope there is another way to update a password.

• Mail not remembering Account Passwords

Sorry to add to the list of things not working, but...
My Mail doesn't seem to want to save it's passwords. I keep having to re-enter them each time I reopen Mail.
I've checked Keychain Access and it doesn't seem to be the cause of the problem, even tried repairing it to no avail.
Anyone else having this trouble?

So I tried all the keychain stuff, loaded the new 1.0 patch, ran permissions and disk repair from the install CD and still... I have tried deleting mail accounts and adding them back, it asks for passwords and all but does not retain them. HOWEVER, in my non-administrator account I can create and save mail settings and passwords just fine, and on my G4 Powerbook when I loaded 10.5 it kept the passwords and works fine.
I thought for a bit maybe there were regional versions of this software and the problem could be in one of those. I live in Northern Wisconsin and am using Snow Leopard... :o)

• With Mac OS 10.6.8 and Firefox 7.0.1, firefox is not remembering passwords nor is firefox asking to remember passswords?

Firefox does remember passwords for some sites but not others. Some of the others have been previously remembered but with different user names and passwords.
The problem started with changes in the user name and password, or with changes in the login URL.

Thanks for your second reply. The problem is apparently in the Firefox software, since it occurs with all Mac users even though their personal information is different. In other words, the problem follows the website.
I have been unable to find a systematic way to duplicate the problem. It initially occurred while I was changing user names and passwords. I didn't want to update some of the changes in the "saved passwords". My recollection is that I ignored the "Remember password" prompt. URL's were changed. The "Remember password" prompt no longer appeared, and did not reappear when returning the the web sign-in page.
For those web pages, there is no "Remember password" prompt. However, those pages are not included as exceptions to the "Remember passwords for sites" exceptions. Similarly, the sites do not appear in the saved passwords.
I have read the recommended reading; none seem to apply. For one of the sites, I was able to produce a pull down list for user name. However, the Shift + Delete action produced no change.

• Firefox v3.6.8 will NOT remember passwords. I've doubled check the settings but it will not remember the passwords

New HP laptop, O/S XP-Pro, my previous computer with XP-Pro had no problem remembering passwords but this v of Firefox will not remember the PW's

Thanks Cor-el. It now works on some sites, but there are still some where it doesn't work. The problem appears to be with sites that have more than just the username and password to fill in. Firefox only saves the username and password but not the other fields. It then refuses to fill in any of the fields on the site.
For instance, my bank has four fields on the sign-in page - username, security code, password, and an odd one with a number between 1 and 4 in it. Firefox only saves the username and password and so can't fill in the other fields. Actually it refuses to fill in any of the fields. It seems to not recognise the page at all.
The only way I can see around the problem at the moment is to save any that Firefox will save and use RoboForm to save the others. It means having two programs to do one job. It's messy but at least it works and I can save all my usernames and passwords and have them fill in properly.
I don't know why it is that RoboForm will save the data but Firefox won't. It appears to be something to do with Firefox only saving two fields whereas RoboForm will save any number as required.

• Firefox not remembering passwords etc. fix not compatible with ver. 34.05. So what to do?

Was pleased to find a fix for making my computer remember passwords, but NOT pleased to find that it is not compatible with my FF 34.05! How do I fix this or even go back to a previous version? Noticed that on some sites, the Password Remembering KEY does not show, particularly on Banking sites, so no option to save anyhow!

What fix are you talking about?
Current Firefox versions should offer to remember passwords regardless of the presence of autocomplete=off.
Firefox won't offer to remember a password when you are in Private Browsing mode.
Did you make sure that there aren't any exceptions?
You can inspect and manage permissions for the domain in the currently selected tab via these steps:
*Click the "[[Site Identity Button|Site Identity Button]]" (globe/padlock) on the location/address bar
*Click "More Information" to open "Tools > Page Info" with the Security tab selected
*Go to the Permissions tab (Tools > Page Info > Permissions) to check the permissions for the domain in the currently selected tab

• Not remembering passwords even though "remember my passwords" is checked in security

I recently updated to Firefox 4.0. After that, websites are not remembering my username and password even though, "Remember my site passwords" is checked in Security.
Looking for resolve.

cor-el -
I mean that if I go to a site and enter a username and password, I am not prompted to remember the information and if I am, when I close Firefox and reopen and go back to the site, the information is blank, nor does it appear if I start to type the first few characters.
If I go into the password manager to look for sites that should have password information there is nothing in the box.
I am going to try to be specific regarding my settings, please keep in mind that this is how they have been set since I started using Firefox and up until I upgraded to 4.0 I had not problem.
*In Privacy the settings that I have always had checked are:
Remember download history
Remember search and form history
Accept cookies from sites
Accept third-party cookies
Keep until: I close Firefox
Clear history when Firefox closes
*In Security settings that I have always had checked under Passwords are:
Remember passwords for sites
Also, when I select under View -> Toolbar: Menu Bar and/or Bookmarks Toolbar once I close out of Firefox and then reopen it, they are no longer visible.
The option for Permanent Private Browsing is not checked.
Look forward to any further information anyone can offer.
