Mail Not Responding On Open!

Hi There!
I hope some genius can tell me, why Mail isn't responding when i open it.
It doesn't even retrieve my mail, it just opens up, but then freezes and does
not respond. What's wrong?
Sincerely
Casper B. Hansen

Hi Casper.
Verify/repair your disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
Now, go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network > Show: Network Port Configurations, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet is at the top of the list.
Finally, try launching Mail under the following conditions (you may need to force quit it first if it's running):
1. Holding the Shift key down until the main window appears.
2. With no Internet connection.
Post back with your observations.

  • Apple Mail: Not Responding

When I open my Mail program over the last few days it does nothing - does not even show the Mail Message Window. I have to Force Quit (message says Mail Not Responding). This happens over and over again. I used Disk Utility to check preferences and repaired all (not much there and nothing relating to Mail). Still won't work. In general Apple Mail has not been working well for awhile that along with MobileMe... delivering multiple emails of the same message and loosing Sent messages. What is happening to this program? Do I have to use Microsoft Office to find a dependable eMail Client software? As it stands I have started using Office on our other computers just so we can receive our email and not worry about loosing or storing Sent and Received Mail.
I am running Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.8 on my workstation. I have Snow Leopard ready to install but was waiting to complete time critical work before installing new system software - perhaps that will be the answer to the problem(?). Anyone having this problem and if so - have you found a solution?
Note: I do receive mail on my iPhone and on iPad thankfully using Apple's Mail program but those are mobile devices - we require dependable email to run our business on our desktops.

Mail in Leopard should not have such problems. Disk Utility repairs permissions, not preferences. I'm assuming your only e-mail account is with Mobileme?

I will try a custom Mail Install, Thanks! Should I delete my current Mail 2.1.3 App before the install?
You shouldn't have to do that. The new Mail install will be replacing everything in the old Mail install (well, not user preferences and configurations, but within Mail.app itself). After you reinstall, it would be of academic interest to see if it launches and behaves okay or not. Regardless of whether it does or doesn't, I would still follow up with reapplying the combo update, in event that there are any security patches or bug fixes for Mail inside said combo update.

  • Desk top mail not responding

My mail system on my desktop has stopped working all I get is the spinning wheel nothing works at all.  I then have to force quit mail and see the message Mail not responding.  I have tried opening mail from the application folder but get the same result.  Mail within Mobileme works perfectly. The only thing I can think I have done recently was to update mobileme calendar since then Mail has stopped working. Any suggestions appreciated thanks.  I am using OSX 10.4.11 on the Powerbook.
      Mike

Hmmm, as I understand it, some of the new Calendar functions don't even work in 10.5.8!?
Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup),  it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Reboot.

  • Firefox is already running, but not responding to open a new window

I closed the only opened Firefox process that was running. Then clicked the Fox to start Firefox again. I received a message: Firefox is already running, but not responding, to open a new window. You must close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system. This is a stupid message since there is no Firefox in process.

  • System Preferences not responding when opening desktop

After installing Lion 10.7, I find that whenever I try to change the desktop wallpaper in system preferences, it freezes and I have to force quit it.
I tried to find the systempreferences.plist, as seen from google searches, but I can't find it anywhere, and those seem to be solutions for SL, L or Tiger.
    Help appreciated.
    Thanks!

I've been having the same issue with system preferences in osx lion freezing and not doing anything for the past week.  Your post solved the problem; all I had to do was move the iphoto library and the photo booth library to the desktop, then I moved them back to my pictures folder in the finder window.  Now system preferences works like a charm, even if I restart the system the system preferences utilities are all accessible.
This solved the problem; whereas other posts that had me use disk utility to repair the hard drive or repair the disk permissions didn't solve the issue.
This now saves me a call to apple tech support
    Thank you.

It has to do with a problem accessing the images on the home>images folder. To solve it, just move its content (iphoto library included) to another place. Then, restart System Preferences. Moving your iPhoto library to another location seems to fix the problem. I am sure Apple will issue an update to correct this problem. But, for now this seems to work for me.

  • Mail not responding.  App is open but will not quit or respond in any other way.

My Mail app is not responding.  The Dock shows that Mail is open, but I cannot get the screen to pull up, quit or otherwise respond.  I tried to restart, but Mail stops that from happening.

    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ Force Quit...
then select the frozen application from the list and press return.

I have been reading a great deal of posts regarding AOL mail in the last few days. I would go into Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars and check the account settings. What troubleshooting have you tried? Reporting that prevents users providing help from repeating what you have already done.

  • Mail not responding after update to 10.10.3

I am having problems with the mail and its not responding? any ideas?
I tried deleting com.apple.mail.savedState method and it didn't work at all.

Back up all data before proceeding.
    Step 1
If Mail crashes or freezes immediately on launch, try the steps suggested on this page. Sometimes a corrupt message on a mail server can be deleted by logging in to the server through its web page. If Mail still won't launch, skip to Step 3.
    Step 2
Select all your mailboxes, and then select
              Mailbox ▹ Export Mailbox...
from the Mail menu bar. Export the mailboxes to the Desktop folder.
Make a note of the settings for all your Mail accounts – everything you'd need to reconstruct the settings from scratch.
    Quit Mail.
    Step 3
In the Finder, hold down the option key and select
              Go ▹ Library
from the menu bar. Move the following items (some may not exist) from the folder that opens to the Desktop:
              Application Support/AddressBook/MailRecents-v4.abcdmr
              Containers/com.apple.corerecents.recentsd
              Containers/com.apple.mail
              Containers/com.apple.MailServiceAgent
              Mail
Note: you are not moving the Mail application. You’re moving a folder named “Mail.”
Launch Mail. It will behave as if you were setting it up for the first time. Go through the setup process with one of your accounts, using the information you noted earlier. Test. If Mail works now, recreate the rest of your settings.
If there’s no improvement, quit Mail and put back the items you moved to the Desktop, replacing any newer ones that may have been created in their place. Stop here and post your results.
    Step 4
This step should not be necessary with IMAP or Exchange mailboxes, because they synchronize automatically with the server. Nevertheless, if the mailboxes are very large, importing them may spare you the need for a long download.
If you took Step 2, import the mailboxes you exported:
              File ▹ Import Mailbox...
Select Apple Mail as the data type.
If you skipped Step 2, look inside the Mail folder on the Desktop for a subfolder Mail/V2/Mailboxes. Import the mailboxes it contains.
Test. If Mail is still working, delete the items you moved to the Desktop in Step 3.

  • Mail not responding, just hanging

Mail has been working fine since I started using my iMac, but today when I opened the App it has just hung, displaying the colour beachball and will not respond to anything. I have used 'Force Quit' to close Mail and repaired permissions with Disk Utility, but still Mail isn't responding.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

    Andrew
you might try a search of Mail discussions for Mail+Hanging - there have been many threads on the subject, most with great advice.
    Here's One
Sometimes, hanging can be due to Mail attempting to download a large message on start-up. If you have web -access to your email (many isp's allow this), you can look at the list of messages via safari & see if that applies to you.

  • TS3276 mail not responding

inbox not responding to clicks.jumps from one message to another.

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Log out and log back in. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Post your results.
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Lots of programs does not respond, when opened

Lots of programs does not respond, when they are opened, Apple store, Mail, Photo Booth and VideoConverterPro and some moor.
To close, I have to click on finder first. What to do ?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Apple mail not responding 10.9.1

My apple mail stopped responding.  It was working after the mavricks update, but now it has stopped responding.  I have to force quit every time i try to open it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm having a similar problem. I have two mail accounts, my .mac account and one through my ISP. Yesterday, on my .mac account a box would pop-up and say that my password was being rejected. I would reenter my correct password, but .mac would not accept it. I can get my .mac mail via Safari (going to .mac and logging in), but not through Mail. This is still happening today. I'm wondering if there is a problem with .mac?
I tried logging out and doing a restart and when I did that, I got the same weird pop-up box I got last summer (WebDav wanting password for a web site that included iDisk).
Methinks this is an Apple .mac/idisk server problem.
