Mail not working, need to reinstall?

Okay, I have SCOURED the internet trying to find a solution to this problem, but to no avail. I use Mail.app to access my Gmail account, and a couple days ago I noticed that it was not receiving mail, and upon further investigation came to learn it was some kind of port/server error or something (from clicking on the lighting bolt/exclamation point triangle). I tried and tried to figure out what the exact problem was and to remedy it. I tried different recommended port numbers, changing the settings, even deleting my Mail account and making it over again, several times, following the instructions provided by Gmail. Still it was not working. I ended up just deleting the application and reinstalling it from my Snow Leopard disc, and now it's just become worse. When I try and open mail I get this message saying,
"You have Mail version 4.0 (1075/1077). It can’t be used on Mac OS X Version 10.6.2 (Build 10C540). For more information, click the Help button."
I clicked the help button and did everything it recommended, again several times, including reinstallation, and it STILL WON'T WORK!!! This is driving me crazy! I'm pretty frustrated and desperate at this point. Can ANYONE please help at all? Thank you in advance.

Nonsense ? Perhaps you can explain to the Mac techs as well as myself why my iMac cannot receive or send mail via an Airport Extreme while a cheap little PC notebook sitting beside it downloads everything. Three calls to Apple with four different techs, including a senior tech could not solve it. The senior guy instructed me to delete the Mail program and reinstall via my system disc. Guess what? It will not install. Warning message states "This version of Mail is not compatible with this OS X operating system". The disc is 10.6.1. I was running 10.6.2 at the time and have since updated to 10.6.3. Now I cannot even get the Mail program on my computer to attempt to solve the problem. I have gone thru every step with Apple techs, line by line and still nothing. If you have any ideas the Mac guys did not, please, tell me now.

I am on OSX 10.7.5 and recently had to reinstall it due to 'mail' not working correctly.  That problem was resolved but now my I can't use the 'right click' function on the apple usb mouse.  I only have a previous version re-install disc as I bought the latest OSX off the app store.  Any help gratefully received?

Hmmm, no, no drivers needed, now it sounds like a bad install... unless you might have some old Mouse software installed???
    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
If that doesn't help Reinstall the OS.

prompted to update iTunes today and now it does not work.  tried reinstalling and caanot successfully reinstall.

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.
    Please note:

  • Mail not working in new mini mac

i got new mini mac and mail not working. i get this message.
You have Mail version 4.2 (1078/1084). It can’t be used on Mac OS X Version 10.6.8 (Build 10K549). For more information, click the Help button.
    dont know what to do
    thanks

Should be Mail 4.5.  With Spotlight, check to see if you have more than one version of the Mail app onboard.  Also, make sure that there is one at the root level of the Applications folder, and that it is namely simply Mail before applying the Combo.

You've gone through all of the basics. You might look at this document regarding potential issues with wi-fi environments.

If none of that works, and if a device restore doesn't work, it's time for a trip to the Genius Bar.
