Mail: occasional temporary refusal in authentication

I've got sites that occasionally temporarily refuse authentication. I haven't tracked down why... (telus.com, gmail.com...)
however, Mail asks me to re-enter my password every time.
This can get annoying if it happens every few seconds for upwards of 15 minutes... as has happened a few times - and is happening RIGHT NOW with telus.com. grrr
I would also love to know how to stop it from confirming my server signature on my (purely for personal use) mail domain... it hasn't been an issue with the other software I use with the same server (kmail, outlook)

How does it behave when you quit and restart Mail?
Do you see the same problem when you make a new User on your Mac and start Mail from that user? If this works well, your problem is localized to the original user and you can try to remove some files:
Open Preferences from within the Mail program and note the exact settings for your email accounts.
Quit Mail
Trash the following file:
your home directory / Library / Preferences / com.apple.mail.plist
and empty the Trash
Restart Mail
Re-install your mail settings
These actions will not interfere with your mailboxes, it will simply create a new plist preference file when you re-start Mail.
As an extra advice: back up your whole Library folder regularly, it contains all your emails.

  • Javax.mail.MessagingException: Connection refused: connect on localhost

    Hello,
I am using Tomcat5.0.28 for a javamail servlet program. I am giving the hostname as localhost. After entering the input details in my html file, i get the error- "javax.mail.MessagingException: Connection refused: connect; nested exception is: java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused: connect " .
can anybody help me regarding in solving error.
    Thanks.

First, you're using a very old version of JavaMail.  Please upgrade.  Some of the properties you're setting aren't supported in that old version.
Second, you don't need the socket factory properties, get rid of them.
Finally, it looks like you're trying to connect on port 143 using SSL.  Port 143 is the non-SSL port.  That's probably not going to work.  Still, it looks like something is refusing to let you connect at all.  If you really can telnet from the same machine your program is running on to the same server machine on port 143, then you probably have some sort of firewall that's preventing your program from connecting.  Please post the entire debug output if it still fails after correcting the problems above.  (Move the setDebug call to before the getStore call.)

  • Mail service not requiring SMTP Authentication

    hello everyone,
I have been trying to find an answer and could not. I want my mail server to require SMTP Authentication. I have "CRAM-MD5" and "Login" checked in Server Admin -> Computers & Services -> Mail -> Advanced -> Security. Still, I can set up a mail account with any name and domain and SMTP through my server. (It does require a password for POP, so at least no one can read others folks mail)
I have begun to notice that I get many returned mails that I never sent, from accounts that are not on my server. So, I am thinking that spammers are relaying or just using my server to spam. I would like that to stop.
I have changed the configurations with Server Admin, stopped service, started service, and even restarted the whole server. Still, mail will not require SMTP Authentication.
Can anyone help me do this with Terminal or manually?

thanks, for any help in advance.

  • Mail occasionally displays zero messages

Mail occasionally displays 0 messages. This happens intermittently and I'm not able to associate it with any particular behavior.
When this occurs mail will displays no messages in the message viewer window, for any mailbox, even though each mailbox has many messages, and it shows an explicit message in the header bar area that there are zero messages in particular mailboxes that are not empty. This can happen when there is new mail, mail indicates that there is new mail but it doesn't display messages in the pane.
When this happens mail will not respond to quit, but activity monitor doesn't show mail as unresponsive. After a forced quit mail seems to function normally, but this is worrying.
    Is this a known problem?

  • I can not send e-mail as i get an authentication rejected message

I just purchased a new IMac and had no problem sending e-mails for a few days until after I had been asked for my server password and entered the wrong one by mistake. Shortly after that when Itry to send an e-mail I get a message "Authentication rejected, Try Later." Trying later has the same result. I checked with my server and there is no problem there. In fact I am able to send e-mails using my I-Pad so something needs to be corrected on my I-Mac. What should I do?

  • Error in sending mail :  SMTPSendFailedExcept Client was not authenticated

    Hello all,
I am new to the forum,
I have a small program to send mail to Microsoft exchange server.
Now the server is enabled with https option.
Now i am getting error :
    com.sun.mail.smtp.SMTPSendFailedException: 530 5.7.1 Client was not authenticated
    at com.sun.mail.smtp.SMTPTransport.issueSendCommand(SMTPTransport.java:1668)

    at com.sun.mail.smtp.SMTPTransport.sendMessage(SMTPTransport.java:735)
    at javax.mail.Transport.send0(Transport.java:191)
    at javax.mail.Transport.send(Transport.java:120)
    at SendEmail.main(SendEmail.java:55)
    there are two things:
As the program sends mail from a webpage, a user password used for login to the webpage is different from his mail server password, it is not possible to give a username and password to send mail / read mail from the exchange server.
Please give any other option without passing user name and password to the exchange server.

    1. Reconfigure the Exchange server to allow sending without authentication.
    2. Authenticate to the Exchange server using credentials specific to the web application itself.
Configure the Exchange server to allow the user with those credentials to send mail that appears
to be from any other user.
No, I don't know how to do any of that with Exchange; ask Microsoft.

  • Fonts jarbled in Safari & Mail occasionally...

I just transferred my settings etc. from an eMac to the new iMac G5 via firewire transfer and something that is happening (that also occurred when I first upgraded to 10.4) is that occasionally a website will have jarbled text etc. This also occurs when I forward an email through Mail, some of the text will be jarbled (like fractions etc.) rather than the straight text. I forgot what I am supposed to do to make this not happen. I am using Ariel as the default font for both and Font Book to manage my fonts. Leads?...
    Regardsarama,
    Jon

Get rid of the fonts Helvetica Fractions and Times Phonetic if you have them. Clean caches with FontFinagler (use Google to find).

  • Apple mail and google 2 factor authentication

I am using 2 factor authentication to connect with gmail. I receive messages without a problem, but when I try to send mail I frequently get a cannot connect error asking for the password to be re-entered. I will then get a new application specific password for gmail and replace the SMTP password. That will work for a day or two, but then it will again fail for sending messages.
Does anyone know if there are particular problems using 2 factor authentication with gmail and OSX mountain lion mail> Am I missing some setting?
    thanks for any insights.

I had looked there several times - and it didn't specifically discuss 2 factor authentication - that is why I posted my question. I had followed instructions and continued with problems.
Yesterday there was a Macworld article posted online about gmail imap. One thing mentioned in the article that is in addition to what is on the google site is that under system preferences there is a mail contacts panel where the gmail password can also be entered.
I generated a new app specific password and entered it in all three places (sys pref panel, imap server, and smtp server.)
At this time that seems to be working.
Will have to see if it sticks.
Google also had a help item suggesting that if the ask for password dialog pops up when attempting to send mail then get a new app specific password and enter it into that box.
Hopefully the issue is resolved. will give it a few days to be sure.
    Thanks

  • Can´t Mail handle smtp/s with authentication?

My mailserver is running on linux and allows only authenticated connections (unprotected and also protected by SSL (imaps)). Connection to the imap server works when starting mail for the first time.
However the connection to my outgoing mail server (which is postfix also using authentication and optionally ssl) doesn´t work.
The following shows up in the logs:

  • Problems receiving mail using Kerberos v5 GSSAPI Authentication

    Hi
We have a problem with our POP mail authentication. It works fine when the Apple Mail client is set to use authentication password but if we set it to use Kerberos v5 GSSAPI the mail client will check mail and after a long period, the spinning wheel stops indicating that there is no mail without any failure message, however there is mail to be received. I believe Kerberos is all correctly set up as we can authenicate to our AFP shares and VPN and can also send mail when using SMTP authentication and it is set to use Kerberos. It is just the POP receiving that is causing us a problem.
I have also checked to make sure that there are 3 principals for each service and these exist.
Anybody have any ideas as to what might be causing the problem? Incidentally, our CRAM MD5 also works for SMTP sending and works fine for sending and receiving for an IMAP account but will not work with a POP account. Don't know if this has any bearing on the matter.

Which email client are you using on your Mac?
If the Mail application, go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts and under the Account Information tab for the account preferences, what is the account type shown?
If POP, what is your setting for removing messages from the server when downloaded which is under the Advanced tab for the account preferences?
If you manually created your Gmail account on the iPhone and you chose the Gmail preset, it was created as a POP account. To create the account as an IMAP account on the iPhone you must choose Other and then IMAP when creating the account.
