Mail on iPhone

II've been using mail on iPhone and iPad since I got both.  They are both set up to not remove emails off the server.  And previously once they were on the devices, the stayed there even after the emails came off the server (I have a pop account).
For the last 6 weeks the emails on my iPhone seem to drop off the end after a week. My iPad is still working as normal and they are all still there until I remove them from the device. I went into the Apple store and they couldn't see any reason for it And checked all the settings and they the same on both. They did a settings reset on the phone but it made no difference, the next step is to back up and reformat, but they said I would lose all me texts etc.
Last night I had a look at the storage used by mail on the iPhone and it was showing that it was using 90MB in the usage for mail alone. I thought maybe there was a limited amount of space I could use for mail app. I deleted a lot of emails and emptied the trash folder and have about 20 emails left on my phone (none have attachments) and restarted and it was still reading as 90MB in size.  I have received 3 emails this morning (no attachments) and now it's reading as 98MB. Overall my phone still has 17.8GB of free space.
Any ideas?

Hopefully future updates by Apple will include these features without having to pay for some expensive add on but, for the moment, this is worth the price for me.
I wouldn't hold your breath. Does the email client used on your computer for accessing the account provide these features without a 3rd party add-on? And I'm talking about any non-Microslop email client.

This requires an add-on to mimic IMAP account behavior with a POP account. If Apple did so, they would need to copy the company's product for this add-on that is available for the Mail.app on a Mac and with the iPhone's Mail application. I'm sure the developer for this add-on has their product protected to prevent any other company from copying the product to be incorporated into a non-Microslop email client to mimic IMAP account behavior with a Hotmail account. More than likely the developer has a licensing arrangement with Microslop of some sort - they must in order to make their product work. Microslop certainly doesn't provide this with their email client on a Mac - with Entourage.
A much easier and what should be a free option for everyone with a Hotmail account is for Microslop to get their copy machines going again and support IMAP account access with a Hotmail account - just as Google does with a Gmail account. You can access a Gmail account as a POP, IMAP, and now as an Exchange account. When creating a Yahoo account with the Yahoo account preset with the iPhone's Mail application, the account is created as an IMAP account with Push access. Microslop could do the same for the iPhone's Mail application if they wanted to, or simply support IMAP account access with a Hotmail account with any email client - with an email client used on your computer for accessing the account and with the iPhone's Mail application as with any other account that supports IMAP access.
