Mail opens as "mime-attachment"

Many times when I get emails, they arrive as a blank mail document with a "mime-attachment". It happens in Mail 3, Mail 2 and in both 10.4 and 10.5. I can open the mail in text-edit. Sometimes I can simply read the email, many times, I can see the references to websites and files. Obviously, this is not how it is meant to display.
Is there a setting or preference I'm missing?
Thanks folks

I'm having the same problem. It has nothing to do with incoming or outgoing attachments, or the incoming message having been forwarded. It happened with 2 incoming messages this morning. They were sent directly to me, not forwarded, and did not have attachments as such, (although they may have contained graphics--e.g., color, special fonts, little pictures). If I go to my webmail, I can read the text of the messages, but when they are downloaded to "Mail (2.1.2)", I see only "mime-attachment". The suggestion of one poster to add the extension .eml, then try to open, did not work for me. Is there no solution to this problem?
Thanks.

How do I open a mime attachment on my iphone email?

    You can't.
All attachments must be encoded before being sent and MIME 1.0 is the industry standard for message encoding.
When receiving a message with an attachment file type that cannot be recognized by the email client and/or by the computer/device used, MIME attachment will appear instead.
This can mean the attachment that was sent is a file type that cannot be accessed/viewed by the iPhone. I also see the same on occasion when a received message was forwarded by the sender and the message received by the sender contains an attachment that can be accessed/viewed by the iPhone but the original message that was forwarded was composed in HTML which can do screwy things with email on occasion - personally I wish HTML would be forbidden with the exchange of email - this along with forbidding the use of the AOL program to send email with attachments.

  • Mail attachments as MIME-attachment unreadable!!!

I've been using Entourage for a long time and it works ok
    I have a gmail account
Now I'm trying to synchronize my mail with an IMAP account in Apple Mail app.
The problem is that some of the attachments now appear as "MIME-attachment" and they are unreadable!!!!
I go to www.gmail.com, check the same message and there it is!: the attachment as it should be! and I can open it right away.
Happened with pdf, gif, jpg files
    Please help

    Hello,
I think I've found the problem... but not the solution
    I did a simple test.
Took a PDF and sent it via Gmail Webmail to myself.
Testing both UTF-8 sending formatting ON and OFF (via Gmail settings) -- Has no affect.
The problem was pinned while renaming the attachment. If the attachment is in English or numbers, you will see it as normal.
If the attachment is NOT in English or numbers Gmail will transform it to UTF-8 and Apple Mail doesn't seem to know how to handle it.
    Here are the results.
    Test1: File name is 09879.pdf
    ------=Part_2220323867308.1197303123110

As you can see, here relies the problem. If Only Mail.app add the file extension from the Content-Type and we're all set.
In the meanwhile, if you want to know the file type just go to 'View --> Message --> Raw Source'
and search for 'Content-Type' a few times or 'application'
Does anyone here have an idea of solving this issue ?

  • TS1347 ios 7: how can i open a mime-attachment.ics file?

since i installed ios7 on my iphone i can not open mime-attachment.ics (invitation sent from an outlook email) files in my calendar. does anyone know what i can do to open these files in my calendar?

All email attachments are encoded before being sent are encoded with MIME.
If your receive an email attachment that is not recognized by the computer or mobile device, that usually means there is not an application available on the computer or mobile device that is compatible with the attachment type.
    For the iPhone's email client:
    Viewable document types
.jpg, .tiff, .gif (images); .doc and .docx (Microsoft Word); .htm and .html (web pages); .key (Keynote); .numbers (Numbers); .pages (Pages); .pdf (Preview and Adobe Acrobat); .ppt and .pptx (Microsoft PowerPoint); .txt (text); .rtf (rich text format); .vcf (contact information); .xls and .xlsx (Microsoft Excel); .zip; .ics

I downloaded ios 7 the other day on my 4, and I cannot open my mime-attachment.ics from outlook. I have already deleted and reinstalled my mail account from which these files originate, without any success. Amy Ideas?

    Hi all,
Same problem. None of the suggestions worked for me. Even the innovative work aroung by alstarck (in outlook uncheck ICalendar) is no good since i get ?????? in the mail header and when trying to create an event it creats it on current date and not in the intended date.
If this ICS business is not fixed soon I'm seriously considering dropping Iphone alltogether because this is the last strow, in addition to the very poor ICalendar-Outlook communication. It hurts my work.
    Any Idea/knowledge/comfort?

  • Need HELP - Need to send MIME attachements, not UU-encoded.

Some important recipients are unable to view attachments I send them b/c Mail, by default, sends UU-encoded attachements instead of MIME attachements.
Is there any way to configure Mail to send MIME attachements?
FYI to any other people having problems SENDING attachements (this took a while to figure out):
Google, Yahoo, and some other mail services are not particularly UU-encoding friendly, and the recipients at those addresses sometimes receive a bunch of garbled 'code' or 'script' instead of the actual attachment file.
I've read lots on these discussions from people trying to deal with READING MIME attachements that other people have sent them, but cannot find any info on switching the SENT preferences to use UU encoding for attachments instead of MIME.
If anyone can clarify, PLEASE, PLEASE HELP.
I use .mac to sync my 2 Mac Pros, MB Pro, iPhone, and three Mac Minis, so I'd really like to keep everything 'in sync' with Apple apps. Otherwise I'll have to switch to Entou-rage or Mozilla, which I don't really want to do...
Thanks in advance for any insight or advice...

I've taken the liberty of re-arranging your question for clarification.

Which one do you want to use? UU or MIME?
I do not think that Apple Mail sends UU-encoded attachments. UU is really old.
There are two settings that can fundamentally change the way Apple Mail sends messages.
    1) Plain text vs. Rich text. With plain text you can't change the fonts or colors or anything else. There is a slight possibility that this mode sends UU attachments, but I can't check from the PC in front of me. Still, I doubt it. Rich text allows fancy fonts and colors.
    2) Send Windows-friendly attachments. This will prevent Apple Mail from sending Macintosh-specific information in an e-mail message. In all cases, Apple Mail only sends standards-forming MIME e-mail messages, but many (all?) PC e-mail clients barf on this 100%-legal MIME e-mail message.
Is there any way to configure Mail to send MIME attachements?
Make sure that Windows-friendly attachments is turned on. The only downside is that other Mac users might not get resource data or might have problems with files lacking extensions. No one should be using resource data or files without extensions anymore, so this question is moot. If you do need to do that, wrap your files in a ZIP.

This may happen regardless of what you do.

Here is a little write-up I did a few years back on this issue. According the the Apple discusssion regulations, I should say that I do sell a MIME-decoding tool through the link above. However, that tool will not help you send MIME e-mail messages. I'm not trying to sell you anything. These days, any decent e-mail client can handle either UU or MIME messages with no problem. There are a few notable exceptions to this, and unfortunately, those exceptions tend to have millions of customers. It is getting better though.

  • Can't open mime-attachment in mail

Sometimes mail is forwarded to my iPhone from my Yahoo! account as a mime-attachment and the iPhone won't open it, so I can't read the message. Any suggestions?

I figured out that if the email is formatted as plain text, an attachment coming from Outlook can be read, whereas if the email message is in HTML format (my PC Outlook default), it cannot.
This could well be a good workaround for you - send your email message in plain text format whenever you include an attachment.
Has anyone figured out a way to solve this - where you can view an attachment to an HTML formatted email?

  • Mail - Email recieved with Attachment always MIME

    Hello,
I sent an email with an attachment; it was a .html file, to my iMac Mail program. I am receiving it as a MIME attachment. In fact it does this with other files I have sent with different extensions. I am expecting the attachement to be simply whatever it is I am sending. What am I encountering and how can I fix this.
    Thanks
    iMac OS X 10.5.8
    Mail 3.6
Sent using Outloook on an XP PC

Nearly all attachments are a MIME type file, but that is not mentioned when Mail can determine what type of file it is, most often identified by the extension. Calling it simply a MIME attachment means there may be some confusion as to what file format it is actually in.
With the message open, click on View and place the cursor on Message and choose Raw Source. Is there a header for the attachment that states what type file it is?

  • Mail Is Only a "MIME Attachment"

I'm away from home trying to get by on an iPod touch standing in for a laptop. One e-mail I received, forwarded (at least) by one AOL user, consists of nothing but a "mime-attachment". I believe I've seen similar things in e-mail on Mail for OS X, but in that environment I've always been able to double-click on that item to open it. So far I haven't had any luck on the iPod touch. I can call up options of "Save Image", "Copy", and "Cancel", but those don't seen to cause any useful results. Is there a solution, or am I stuck until I return home? Thanks for any advice.

  • 'Ghost' mime-attachements in Mail

    I have a problem.
Ever since i upgraded to Leopard Mail insists on including a 'mime-attachment.txt' file with every email i sent and which containts an attachment. Just to be clear, this mime-attachment is visible in mail aswell. An email sent to myself with 1 attachment will contain 2 attachments when received.
Now, previous to Leopard I just always made sure I included my attachment at the very end of the mail and that would prevent this from happening. Now however, no matter what I do (plain text, RTF, end of mail, etc) mail insists of including a mime-attachement.txt of 1 byte.
Any ideas on how to fix this, my customers are all asking me about attachments the can't open etc and it's really annoying...
    Thx in advance,
