Mail opens on its own in 10.6

Does anyone know why mail is opening all by itself on my 10.6.7 system? I do not use the mail program on my workstation and do not want to. I keep finding Mail open and prompting me to set up. Then it will not quit. I have to forcequit.
Anyone know what's going on?

Hopefully this will solve your problem (It did for me):
1. Open up iCal
2. Go to iCal > Preferences (on the top grey bar)
3. In preferences, go to "Advanced"
4. At the bottom of the window, there's an option entitled "Automatically Retrive Invitations from Mail". If that's checked, un-check it.
5. Close the preferences window to save the preferences.
Congratulations, you're done! Hope this helps!

  • CD/DVD drive open on its own - Equium L40

    Hi,
I have a Equium L40-10X laptop bought recently from Pc World. It's been working fine until recently my cd/dvd drive popped open on its own. I closed it and then about 10 minutes later it did it again. This happens every so often. After a bit of research I found out it could have been a spyware issue. Scanned, and removed all traces etc. Problem appeared to be gone, but alas, the drive once again popped open.
Recently the drive is not reading discs as well. It seems to work when it wants for any time between 10 seconds and an hour at a time. The things got a mind of its own....and when it's not working, the button to open the drive doesn??t seem to work. I have to use a paperclip to open the drive.
Either I have a haunted laptop or there's something wrong.
Has anyone had any experience of anything like this before or have any advice on what to do?
    Thanks, Jon.

    Hi mate
I didnt notice something like this before but I presume its a mechanical problem.
Dont think 3rd party software (program, spyware, virus, etc) could cause this issue.
Additionally you have said that the drive is not reading discs as well.
In such case I would recommend contacting the ASP in your country and to ask for the drive check and if necessary for an ODD drive replacement.
If the warranty is valid the replacement should be done for free.
    Best regards

I've no idea of the cause of this problem, but i'm really scared about the possibility of being a virus, so I'd be very grateful if you give a hand with it.
    Thank you very much

    Hello MIke:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
No need to apologize. My English, at times, is not very good and it is my native tongue!
First, there are NO viruses that affect a Mac running OS X - none.
Open system preferences>accounts>log in items. See if "terminal" appears there (probably not).
I suspect this article will help yoiu solve the problem:

  • The Character Pallett repeatedly opens on its own and crashes

Starting this morning I am being driven crazy by the Character Pallett launching unexpectedly on its own and then crashing almost immediately. Then it attempts to launch again, flashes briefly on screen, and crashes again. My crash log shows the same repeated process.[Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInternalInconsistencyException', reason: 'Invalid parameter not satisfying: (index >= 0) && (index < [_itemArray count])']
It's pretty impossible to get anything done. I tried reinstalling OSX combo 1.6.8, but the installer would not see my startup drive as being eligable; I then reinstalled Snow Leopard 10.6 and attempted to update to 10.6.8 that way. But this attempt lead to an error that cancled the install. So now I am running 10,6, but with many apps that require 10.6.8. And the Character Pallett keeps poping up and then crashing even with 10.6. I'm beginning to think it may be a hardware problem, either ram or logic board issue; but I lack the diagnostic skills to figure it out.
I thought of trying to launch the Character Pallett on purpose, but when I open the System Preferences and click the box that would place the Keybaord icon in the menu bar (which is the only way I know  to get to the Character Pallett) the icon doesn't appear. The check mark doesn't even stick.
And help would be greatly appreciated.

    Where I am so far:
    1. First I should correct the term I was using. It's tje "Character Viewer" and not the Character Pallett. To access the viewer one normally opens System Prefs>Keyboard and clicks on the box saying Show Keyboard and Character Viewer in Menu Bar. Once in the menu bar, one can access the viewer via a pop down menue item. But I did not have the Keyboard in the menu bar and the viedwer was poping open on its own. I couldn't even get the keyboard menu to appear in the menu.
    2. I took the advice received so far and booted into Safe Mode, trashed the plist item. The viewer popped open on its own still, but did not immediately crash. I could click on the red window controller and close the window. In safe mode I could get the keyboard menu to appear and could select the Character Viewer.
    3. I removed off all my log in items—the only odd thing I noticed was the duplication of iTunes helper. At this point I still could not upgrade from 10.6 to 10.6.8 via the combo updater. So I rebooted normally, but with no log in items. The System Pref for showing the keyboard menu item still did not work. Nor could I upgrade to 10.6.8 with the combo updater. I also tried update just to 10.6.1, but got the same Installer error. But the Character Viewer popup/crash is gone, but so to is access to all the iLife apps that require 10.6.8. iTunes, for example cannot see my iPhone or iPad when they are plugged in via usb.
So I guess I should thank yuou guys for your help andnow post a new question about not being able to upgrade Snow Leopard. Perhaps there's already been a similar problem posted.

  • My iTunes keeps opening on its own HELP!!

I really need help here. I have Googled this for a while now, and I can't find any fix. My iTunes will just spontaneously open on its own, sometimes it'll play the first song in my library and other times it won't. This has been going on for a few months now, through multiple versions of the iTunes software. Currently, I am using version 10.5 on Snow Leopard (OSX 10.6.8). I do not have plug ins that interact with iTunes installed anywhere on my computer, nor do I have widgets for iTunes. I do have devices I connect to iTunes, but I've disabled the Wi-Fi sync, thinking that was the culprit. It actually seemed to work at first when I did it, but now the problem is back in full swing and I've now gotten to the point where I need to store the iTunes app in the trash so the computer no longer has access to open it. I tried entering in "killall iTunes" into Terminal, based off a suggestion I read somehwere else, and it of course quits the program, but then iTunes just opens up again 5 seconds later. Has anyone found the reason this is happening? I see a lot of similar complaints, but NO answers and Apple support seems to be blind to the issue. I would appreciate any advice I could get on the matter, thank you.

That's crazy, LeonieDF, but i think you are Right!
itunes autolaunching was driving me nuts, i removed my headphones from the headphone jack on my macbook pro, and voila! No more problem. What a wierd bug.

my itunes keeps opening on its own without me opening it, it will happen again and again even after i close it. how do i fix it to make it stop doing this as it is extreemely annoying

If it is doing it while your device is plugged in, it is because it is set to automatically sync. Please go to: Preferences>Devices, and select the option to "Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically." Also, I hate to be "that guy", but you spelt extremely wrong. Just a pro tip.

  • LIghtroom upgrade (1.3) opens on its own.

I downloaded the Lightroom(LR) upgrade yesterday and now LR has opened on its own about 4 times in the last 24 hours. It happens when I'm doing some totally unrelated keyboard input. I'm running Win XP Pro and I'm working on a complete new system build. I don't think I had even used LR 1.1 prior to opening the upgrade. I've really only opened LR 1.3 once since installing the upgrade and it seems to work fine once opened. Anyone else experiencing this problem?
For Adobe development, here is the Win XP Event Viewer description:
"Faulting application lightroom.exe, version 1.3.1.0, faulting module storeprovider .dll, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x0004cfd1."
    followed by the next event:
"Hanging application lightroom.exe, version 1.3.1.0, hang module hungapp. version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000."

Thanks Lee. I had actually just traced the problem back to the photo download as a start-up item and disabled it. Your post confirmed this action.
In my case, I didn't have a camera or reader connected to the PC and my all-in-one printer was turned off the whole time. Obviously, this problem can arise even with the device turned off.

  • The Firefox menu opens on its own when idle and know one is using the computer. Why?

I have three windows 7 x64 computers with Firefox 5 as the default browser. Firefox is always open, and usually the active window. I've noticed with 5 that the Firefox menu will pop open on its own. My computer will have the screen dimmed or blacked-out from the idle timer, then from the corner of my eye I see it activate and and the Firefox menu is open. Since then I've actually seen it open on it's own when I wasn't using the system. Keeps making me think someone has logged into my computer and was doing stuff. And before anyone asks, all AV is up to date and scanned daily, and no has remote access to any of these computers. Thanks.

Seems like your Computer is Haunted :-P just kidding..

  • Script Opening In Its Own Tab  In v1.5.4

Morning, this is really doing my head in and I was able to do this in a previous version but I can't find the setting I need
I click on a connection and it opens up a new tab/window with the connection name
I then Ctrl + O, select my script and click on Open but the script then opens up in a new tab of its own rather than the one connected to the database
I then have to select my connection from the drop down and then run the script
I hope this makes sense, can anyone help please
    Thanks

Yes it makes sense. This functionality was changed in the move to 1.5. We removed the File -> Open menu option on the SQL Worksheet context menu, to reduce the clutter. This means that you use the remaining File Open on the main menu that always opened a file in a new tab.

  • Front Row opens on its own??

I upgraded to Leopard about a month ago and twice now, quite randomly, Front Row has just launched and started running on its own. I can't figure out what I've done to cause this, if anything. I think both times I was just online somewhere- probably different places. Any idea why this would happen?

You may be surprised: though few used it, many if not most of the old PowerBooks supported infrared communications:
    http://support.apple.com/specs/powerbook/PowerBook_G4.html
Of course it's also possible you hit an obscure key combination that triggered Front Row, but somehow that seems even less likely than a stray IR beam.

  • Itunes updgraded and now it continues to open on its own

  • Thumbnails appear in iPhoto, but photos cannot be opened on its own

    Hello-
I had an older camera that I have since replaced. When I uploaded the photos to iPhoto initially, they were uploaded fine. However, now when I go to open them in iPhoto, I can see them only as a small thumbnail. When I double click on the image, the photo does not appear- rather a circle with an exclamation point in it. Is there any way to save these photos? Thank you!

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
    Regards
    TD

  • Itunes opens on its own

My iTunes 10.5.2 keeps opening on it's own. I can't seem to stop it. This has been going on for many weeks now.

It's the Resume feature of Lion:
Managing Mac OS X Lion's application resume feature.
If you shutdown your computer you should get a dialog asking if you want applications to resume on the next startup. Simply uncheck the box to prevent that from occurring. Open General preferences and uncheck the option to Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps. You can also install a third-party utility to control resume features on individual applications: RestoreMeNot or Application State Cleaner.

  • ITunes Keeps Opening On Its Own

All of a sudden, iTunes on a 17" iMac flat keeps opening by itself. I quit it, then about five minutes later, it opens up but it doesn't seem to be doing anything.
All podcasts have been cleared and there's no sharing.
    Any ideas?

Hey, thanks for that tip. There WAS an iTunes widget running! Curious thing though, before we saw that, the problem seemed to go away after a restart.
    Thanks again!

if i put in the dvd nothing happens, how do i get it to play when no menu opens up?

If the DVD plays when you open Apple's DVD Player application and hit play, and you want the application to always open, go to Apple menu -> System Preferences CDs & DVDs to change the default application to open DVDs.  If it doesn't show up at all, see this tip on making it visible at least in the Finder:
