Mail opens randomly.

After a few hours of using my computer Mail.app will try to open. I haven't clicked on it or done anything to start it as far as I can tell. This became so annoying I removed Mail.app and it still tries to run but now finder asks where Mail.app is located.
How can I make this stop?
Thanks,
srmatto

I, too, can report that, in the past few weeks, following the upgrade to Leopard 10.5.7, I have been observing that, when I wake up my computer(s) from sleep, this action somehow causes Mail to automatically load and begin to download email, even though I did not do anything to trigger Mail to load. This bizarre, undesired behavior is occurring on all three of my home-networked Macs, listed in my profile.
At first, I thought it might be some aberrant AppleScript that I had installed, but not all of the Macs have those AppleScripts installed, so that ruled that theory out. Then I thought maybe it's a virus (or virus software), but VirusBarrier detected nothing amiss where it is installed, and that anti-virus cannot be causing the problem, since it is not (yet) installed on all three of the computer/volumes I am reporting. The only common element between all three computers is that they are running Mac OS X 10.5.7. The fact that others are noticing this behavior on their computers, too, would imply that the issue is not confined to my small network, nor to any particular configuration on my computers. Thus, I am not going to waste any time trying to trouble-shoot this one, nor should you, I suggest.
Perhaps there is a bug in the latest Leopard update? I leave such issues to Apple developers to isolate and cure.

  • Safari / browser problems, wont open random webpages

I am having problems with all of my browsers opening random websites.
All was working fine until one day Safari simply refused to open a few random sites. I thought it was a provider glitch, but they said it's not and besides I have no trouble opening those same sites on my iPad and even from my Bootcamp Windows 7 system. I have no idea what is causing it, some sites simply won't open without any explanation. The browser just keeps loading and loading and loading, but no effect. To make matters even more confusing, it even won't load some images in the mail. So I'm guessing it is a system-wide issue but I have no idea what is causing it. The system is up to date.
The problem is the same in Safari, Chrome, Opera and Firefox with same web pages.
Any and all help would be appreciated, if not...guess I'll just reinstall the system.

Please give a specific example of a page you can't load, and of one that you can.

  • Clicking link in mail opens a new tab, not a new window

When clicking on a link in AppleMail, after a recent update, opens a tab in a random window or perhaps the top window in Safari.  Until this update, clicking on the link used to open a new window.  This is driving me nuts.  I am getting links from mail opening in a new tab in Safari windows I reserve for specific topics, or uses.  I do not want unrelated mail links opening and interfering with work in these existing browser windows.  Also, when I see the link from mail is not wanted, I too often close the window like I usually do, but now inadvertently close a Safari window with multiple tabs of important information, that I have trouble recreating.  Where did this come from!?  How do I change it so a new window opens?

I was having the same problem and finally figured out how to change this bahavior.  Go to Safari preferences under the 'Tabs' settings.  Make sure the field "Open pages in tabs instead of windows" is set to NEVER.  That should do the trick.

  • Why does Mail open in guest account but not my account since upgrade to Mavericks?

I've read a lot of threads but not found anything that works for me. The history is this:
I've upgraded to Mavericks 10.9.2. Since then, Mail won't open in my own user account. I only get a very brief error message:
    Process:
    Mail [1448]
    Path:
    /Applications/Mail.app/Contents/MacOS/Mail
    Identifier:
    com.apple.mail
    Version:
    7.2 (1874)
    Build Info:
    Mail-1874000000000000~1
    Code Type:
    X86-64 (Native)
    Parent Process:  launchd [157]
    Responsible:
    Mail [1448]
    User ID:
I have gone to user/Library/Mail and deleted the contents of the folder Mailboxes + all the other mailboxes. No change - Mail still won't open.
If I switch user accounts to guest user, Mail opens normally (sets up email accounts etc).
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Rebooted in safe mode, repaired disc permissions, rebooted (again in safe mode) but no difference.
There was a bit more detail I could / should have added.
    1) Before it crashes, Mail says it is Upgrading your Mail database.
    2) I downloaded Mail update but Installer said none of the drives were compatible. (Anyway Mail works fine in Guest Account)
    3) I've been through all the tips on this post https://discussions.apple.com/message/23490745#23490745http://
    and
looked at Internet accounts in Preferences and none of my email accounts is checked with Mail. It asks for a password for each one but when I provide it I get the message Unable to verify account name or password. And if I try and uncheck iCloud with Mail I get the message that I need to do that from within Mail. (Obviously not possible until I can open Mail).
In Terminal tried defaults delete com.apple.mail ColorQuoterColorList but got the message that it hadn't been done.
Tried to find Envelope.x.x files as per this fix:     Final solution: Go into ~Library/Mail/V2/Mailboxes > Delete all mailboxes. Then go to ~Library/Mail/V2/Maildata and delete 3 or more "Envelope.x.x" files > Restart Mail, and enjoy your success.     but don't have a V2 folder nor Envelope.x.x files. I do have Envelope Index file and Envelope Index - journal
I don't suspect 3rd party applications because I think they are all available in the Guest Account aren't they?
Many thanks for your reply though. Any more ideas?

  • Why won't my mail open?

Why wont my mail open ?
It been a couple of days that i havent been able to completely shut down my lap top because it say that mail mail does not let me.

The mail version you want is 4.6 (1085).   Have you applied the Snow Leopard combo update to your current OS?
Back up your files; you could do combo update again over the top of your existing OS, then software update to pick up the security updates.
    Then try Mail again.

Do I need to reinstall Tiger and start over?

A couple of things to try before taking those drastic measures.
    1. Repair permissions, restart.
    2. Boot with the install disk, launch Disk Utility, and verify/repair the disk.
    3. Boot into safe mode and see if it works there.
    4. Reinstall the 10.4.7 COMBO update, restart, repair permissions, and restart.
If those don't work, consider Archive & Install rather than an Erase & Install. See http://www.apple.com/support/tiger/install/ for details.

  • Is there any way to make Mail open next message?

Is there any way to make Mail open the next message on the inbox automatically after deleting, forwarding o saving a message?
I mean, is there any way to, after reading a message, going to the next or previous message without double clicking the main inbox window?
I used (on windows) to read mail on outlook, or even on entourage for mac, and after I read a message, even if I deleted it, forward it, replied it, or even saving it on a folder, automatically the program (outlook, entourage, hotmail, etc) opened the next message on the inbox, but I am not able to find any way to make Mail do that.
Is there a way to it? Or should I provide suggestions to Apple?
By the way, no meant to prefer microsoft for this, I just think this is a cool feature for reading several messages one after another without going back to the main inbox page and double clicking the message to read...
    Thanks for any help

Down-arrow, Return. Return opens the selected message. I read through hundreds of messages without ever touching the mouse. Once you get used to the keystrokes, Mail is extremely efficient.

  • I keep Mail open on my MacBook Pro and prior to Mavericks items would open on my 27" secondary display. How can I make this happen in Mavericks?

I keep Mail open on my MacBook Pro and prior to Mavericks items would open on my 27" secondary display. How can I make this happen in Mavericks?

In System Preferences > Mission Control, uncheck mark Displays have seperate windows. This should bring you back to the secondary display you had before the upgrade. You may have to open Mail, the first time and place it on your secondary display. You also won't have the advantages of the dock and menus on the secondary display.
I keep my own secondary display with these settings because I need the ability to expand a window across both displays.

  • HT4855 iMac mail open and mouse has frozen on screen, new batteries in mouse..no change. turning iMac off and back on ..no change. need advice asap

Imac mail open and mouse has frozen on screen...please advise?

The Mac uses an "All devices active" philosophy with pointing devices and keyboards.
If you have additional pointing devices attached, especially a graphics tablet, it is still directing mouse operations at the same time as the mouse you have your hand on. The end result is the SUM of commands from all such devices.

  • Why does excel, word and mail open when I turn on my Mac?

When I start my Mac Pro, excel, word and mail open.  Can this be stopped?

First of all, open the Apple menu (at the top left of the screen) > About this Mac, and tell me what OS X version you have.
If it's 10.7 or 10.8, check that all of those applications are closed when you turn off the computer. OS X Lion and Mountain Lion reopen the apps that were opened in the next startup. To disable this, just go to the Apple menu > Shut Down, untick "Reopen windows when logging back in", and turn off your computer, so they shouldn't open again

  • Mail opens on its own in 10.6

Does anyone know why mail is opening all by itself on my 10.6.7 system? I do not use the mail program on my workstation and do not want to. I keep finding Mail open and prompting me to set up. Then it will not quit. I have to forcequit.
    Anyone know what's going on?

Hopefully this will solve your problem (It did for me):
    1. Open up iCal
    2. Go to iCal > Preferences (on the top grey bar)
    3. In preferences, go to "Advanced"
    4. At the bottom of the window, there's an option entitled "Automatically Retrive Invitations from Mail". If that's checked, un-check it.
    5. Close the preferences window to save the preferences.
Congratulations, you're done! Hope this helps!
