Mail option "Send Windows-Friendly Attachments" is grayed-out

I use Mail 4.2 under OS 10.6.2.
The option "Send Windows-Friendrly Attachments" is grayed-out.
Is there a reason for that?
Could that mean that it in non functional?
Thanks for your help.

Thanks!
I understand what you mean and that was the explanation that I gave myself, but without really knowing if I was right. Your explanation seems logical.
I was raising this point, because I have a problem sending attached ".jpg" photos to a friend in Europe (France) who uses Outlook under Windows Vista. He keeps telling me that I am at the origin of the problem, this problem being that he receives the attachment within the core of the text and that the file is in ".bmp" rather than ".jpg"!
Otherwise, I am not having the problem with others Windows users, who also use Outlook (under XP, Vista, or 7). They all receive the ".jpg" file as such and can open it by clicking twice on it, and also save it as such.
But I'm trying to see if I do something wrong before I try to convince this friend that the problem may be on his side. In which case, I also would like to help him in finding out what the problem is (but I'm not expert of the "dark side").

    • Open Mail ....Command-N or click the “New” icon in the Toolbar
    • Type what is required and then..
    • Click the “Attach” icon in the Toolbar
    • Navigate to the file
    • Select “Choose File”

    • Navigate to the file and check the box “Send Windows Friendly
    Attachments”
    • Select “Choose File”

    Method 3 ....
    • Make a folder on your Desktop and add files to it (pictures, etc).
    • Control-click on the folder and choose “Create Archive of 'Your Folder'.”
    • This makes a compressed archive of the folder in ZIP format.
    • Drag the resulting archive (it ends with '.zip') into your mail message.

  • How do I send windows friendly attachments in Mail?

I am attaching jpgs to emails and sending them to windows users. They claim that the jpgs are embedded in the email and that they cannot access them. When I look at the email I sent in my Sent Mail folder it looks just like I would expect it to. Yes, the jpgs are visible at the end of the email, where I dragged them. But they are also shown in the header as attachments. "Always send windows friendly attachments" is already selected in the Edit>Attachments menu, so what am I missing here? Why can't these windows users access the jpg files?

I need to make a living.  I won't let mac mail prevent me from making a living even a little bit.  Apples product will not let me do the things i need to do.  I don't have the luxury of trying to dictate to my customers which email product they use, most of them are NOT sophisticated computer users.  They use what is given to them by an ISP.  One contact lost could cost thousands of dollars in lost revenue.
I am not misinformed Apples, product does not do what i need.  That is ALL the information i need, i can't use it.  I don't care, even a little bit, about a "standard" so don't try to inform me about standards and how Apple is right and Microsoft is wrong.
Apples email product is the only product I've used that has this difficulty.  So far it has not been enough of a problem for me to abandon Apple entirely.  I must say that I cannot use 2 of the three products i have from apple for sending business emails.  I don't know how much longer Apple will be able to ignore real world problems their customers face when using Apple products in a very NON standards compliant world.
None of the solutions i've found here are real world solutions, No Zipping of Files, No requirement that attachments be at the end of an email, No requirement for plain text.  No one seems to understand that much of what i have to deal with is a long string of forwarded and reply email.  If i try to make all of this stuff work i'd spend days reformatting other peoples email and the result would be something they would not recognize.
So i'd love to hear from someone that does not have a myopic Apple flavored view of the world and has a real solution.  The only one i've found is spelled "OUTLOOK".  Sorry.

I have a client that uses Windows that has recently told me she can no longer open the PDFs I send her. I can't find this elusive "Always Send Windows-Friendly Attachments" setting that I have read may solve my problem. Can someone get me there?

    Dear Dan,
It was from InDesign that I was creating the shared pdfs. I was one of two Mac drivers in a corporate sea of Win users and had to make the change I mentioned in order for the Win users to see my pdfs for review. The difference from what you appear to be doing was that were all on an MS Exchange Server so the files were shared over the company's Exchange Server e-mail system. However, some of these files occasionally went to outside users via regular e-mail and those people had no issues either.
So what I did was tested and worked for years.
You might look at the Adobe forums or Knowledge Base to see if that is a reported issue with newer version of CS. I was on CS2 when I was doing this, and the other Mac driver was on CS3 but had no problems either.
Some Win users I've talked to find a problem opening some pdfs (not mine) in general and found they had to open Reader first and them open the file from Reader's File menu. That most often happened if the client was using an outdated version of Reader.

  • Mail will not send Windows friendly attachments

Although in the menu "Edit" send word friendly attachments is ticked.  It does not send them.  Recipient says it arrives as zipped file that is jammed and cannot be opened.  I've been exporting the pages document to Word and then attaching it.

    Hi,
"embedded jpegs" is not good terminology. If the JPEGs are attachments, they are not embedded -- don't confuse embedded with View in Place, btw.
How large a JPEG have you been able to attach and sent? How is the computer connected -- wireless or via ethernet cable?

  • Sending windows friendly pictures in email

I send out a lot of photos to family, using mail and iphoto. My brother who has a windows machine, has to open each one seperately. Which needless to say is a pain. As far as Iv know this was not a problem when I used the camera software and attached the photos myself. However I also upgraded to tiger at the same time.
    Any thoughts?

This send Windows Friendly Attachments feature has no effect on this.
The Mail.app displays all image/photo type attachments inline or viewed in place within the body of the message by default (when receiving and sending such attachments) which cannot be turned off without using a 3rd party plugin.
Depending on the recipient's email client and available preference settings, such attachments may appear inline or viewed in place within the body of the message by default when the message is opened by the recipient (as with the Mail.app) or as attached files only which must be opened separately for which we have no control over.
For example, when a Windows Outlook or Outlook Express user sends such attachments, the files appear as attached files only when sending but when received and opened by a Mail.app user, the attachments will appear inline or viewed in place within the body of the message for which the sender has no control over unless the sender uses HTML formatting and embeds such files within the body of the message which are not true attachments.

  • HT1338 When I email an attachment with "Always Sent Windows-Friendly Attachments" checked, the result is a picture embedded in the body of the email, not a attachment.  What am I doing wrong.

When I email an attachment (a .jpg file) with "Always Send Windows-Friendly Attachments" checked, the result is a picture embedded in the body of the email, not a attachment.  What am I doing wrong.

    1. "Always Send Windows-Friendly Attachments" has nothing to do with the display of attachments on either your machine or other ones. It's an esoteric setting that strips the resource fork from Mac files (that might have them) which could apper as a duplicate file on the Windows machine.
    2. Send Plain Text emails. Then it will always be received as an attachment.

  • Attaching multiple windows friendly attachments in Mail

I am able to attach a single file to a piece of outgoing mail in Mail, and have that file appear as an attachment that I can open up in Outlook.  However, if I select multiple files to attach to a piece of mail and the "windows friendly attachment" option is checked, those attachments show up embedded in the Outlook mail and not as separate attachments.
How can I send multiple windows friendly attachments in a single piece of mail and have them show up as separate attachments in outlook?

I seem to have solved this problem, which was that my daughter (on Windows) could not save attachments that I sent her in emails, and had other problems.
    My solution is:
    1. Mail > Edit >Attachments: Check "Always insert attachments at end of message".
    2. After composing the text of a message in Mail, drag your image or its icon on to Mail's window and drop the icon at the end of the message. Voila (for me at least). If you drop the image icon at the top of the text, the image gets transmitted but not the text (!!!) (Ain't Apple wonderful!).
    3. My daughter sees the image, opened, at the bottom of the message and by Right-Clicking on it she can save the image (she typed .jpg after the image title and got a jpg.)
    Hope this works for you.

  • Sending window friendly photo attachments

Since upgrading to Yosemite and changing from entourage to Mail
When I send photos from desktop of Iphoto they leave looking like they should. i.e they are attached to the email but when they are they are only pictures and no attachments and no paperclips on email
Window friendly attachment Box is ticked and in mail preferences .

Windows Friendly attachments means the resource fork is stripped from files so it's less confusing for Windows machines.
but when they are they are only pictures and no attachments and no paperclips on email
Do you mean 'but when thy are received...?
How things turn up on the receiver's machine has a lot to do with the settings there... Try sending plain text emails.

  • Windows users cannot open window friendly attachments

    Hello All,
I have sent "windows friendly" attachments from Mail but Windows recipients cannot open the attachments. This is with .tiff , .pages, etc. I have also tried to change the file name to .doc, .tif, etc. The only attachments that seem to work are .pdf . The check box "send windows friendly" is always checked.
    Any way around this?

I tried it and it works. From Pages I did this:
    1.
    2. Clicked Word Doc.
    3. Then saved to desktop so it is easy to find
At first what I did was attach a "Windows Friendly" from Mail. Which you would think would make it "ok" for a pc user. Guess not... (see below)
    Thanks for everybody's help!

  • How do I change file names in "Windows Friendly" attachments before sending?

In sending some "Windows Friendly" attached images, I want to change the file names so they are meaningful to the recipient. (I don't want to change the file name in my picture catalog, just for this mailing.)  In Outlook on an old pc, I remember being able to right click and rename the file in the email draft. I've tried right clicking on the image (which looks embedded in my draft), but there is no option for renaming. I can't see the file name in my draft to figure out another way to change it. I'm sure other people want to do this when sending other types of files, so there must be a way, right? I'm using the current version of Mail.
    Thanks!

I'm pleased to have helped, if you are mailing images all the time perhaps you could create a new folder on the Desktop or in Finder/Username store your images in the folder rename the images click Drag & Drop more than one at a time but don't make the package too big!

  • Windows-friendly attachments?

In The Missing Manual David Pogue recommends not setting attachments to be windows-friendly if they will be also received on a Mac, and that the windows-friendly setting only removes an added (useless) attachment that windows users may receive. Anyone have any experience with the windows-friendly setting resulting in Mac users not receiving the attachments at all?
I have always used "windows-friendly" for my attachments until I read The Missing Manual, and can't recall any complaints from Mac users.

Anyone have any experience with the windows-friendly setting resulting in Mac users not receiving the attachments at all?
I've never had anyone complain that they can't open a Windows-friendly attachment on a Mac. If someone you send it to does have a problem, they'll let you know, in which case you can send it again as a regular Mac attachment. David Pogue's recommendation is just that: a recommendation, so you're not bound to it. Do what works for you until you hear otherwise.

  • E-mail options PSE8 & Windows 7

I'm new to PSE (I have PSE8) and Windows 7.
I am trying to send ("share") photos via email.
I appears that there are only 2 choices: 1) Adobe mail 2) Windows Mail.
I use Thunderbird for email and of course, that is where my address book is.
I can use the Adobe method but I have to manually enter the "to" email address.
The Windows Mail method fails saying I need to set a default in the Control Panel.
I cannot figure out what they want.  Thunderbird is my default mail program.
Is that a way to get PSE8 to interface to Thunderbird (or an email program of choice)?
    TIA
    DFCD8

Thanks for the answer, Adobe Email only.
Yes I have experienced the "window behind" etc.
I have  typed email addresses and the Adobe mail sends it fine.
Since Adobe Email is what I have then getting all my contacts from
my Thunderbird Address Book into PSE Contacts becomes the problem.
In the PSE contacts "Add" window it has two import options 1) vcard files 2) windows mail
If I can import my contacts with one of these I could live with it.
But now the problem seems to be that Thunderbird will not export contacts in "vcard" or "windows mail" format.
It will do LDIF, comma separated or tab delimited.
I don't know what "windows mail" is.  I will try to find out.
Then I guess I have to figure out how to import my thunderbird contacts into Windows Mail,
so I can then import that into PSE contacts.
    Thanks for listening.

  • Apple ID required for every purchase, and option to change it is always grayed out.

I just purchased a new iPod after my old one died on me. When I went to download some previously purchased apps, it asked me for my Apple ID with every download. I went to Restrictions, which were still off and saw that "Require Password" was set to "Immediatly" and could not be changed without turning on restrictions. I turned restrictions on to fix it, but while all others could be changed "Require Password" is still grayed out and can't be changed. This is driving me crazy and making the App Store near unusable. How do I change this?

Does it show a Delete Account option at the bottom of Settings > iCloud?  What happens if you hit that?

I recently changed my aol password and right after I changed, I cannot get mail.  I get a a pop up block that says, Cannot Get Mail, the user name or password for AOL is incorrect, settings, OK.  I go to settings as suggested but the account area is grayed out and will not let me open.  Need help on how to fix this problem.  I tried sync with my PC and that did not help either.

It sounds like you might need to contact Yahoo! if you aren't able to setup your email account as a new account after deleting it.
I found some links on the Yahoo! website that might help:
