Mail outgoing server choice not sticking

I've got Mail set up to only use one outgoing server (or a default server), but it is not abiding by this and instead wants to default to my iCloud outgoing server. Does anyone know how to clear this issue and get things working correctly again? Also, the default server that I want to use (and was using just fine until this problem began) is for an Exchange account.
Thanks

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
Back up all data.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Log out and log back in. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Post your results.
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

opps.  Long title there... The past few days my Mail app has started downloading multiple copies of e-mails from all pop servers.  This is only happening on my Macbook not other macs.  Deleting mail from server does not help. I ran ClamXav found 2 viruses deleted those.  Checked for software update and installed suggested downloads.  Problem still contintues.  Any suggestions?

    Folks,
even after having repaired the inbox folder under "properties" a few times, I still had some e-mails where the contents are different from the subject line.
In other words in the inbox there are two e-mails: one with subject line "abc", and another one with subject line "def".
When I display the e-mail with the subject line "abc", the contents are from the e-mail with the subject line "def" in the in-basket.
What else can be done to correct this problem?
    Thanks and best regards.

  • Iphone4 - Two Gmail Accounts - Outgoing server does not work anymore

I started using my private Gmail account on my Iphone and everything worked fine (having found help in Youtube videos about how to set up Ingoing/Outgoing server).
Now I added my Gmail account from work (ends on .nl instead of .com - Dont know if that matters). I can now access both inboxes but I cannot send emails from BOTH accounts. I then deleted the new account but still cannot send emails from my first account anymore.
I found that under "settings->Mail,Contacts,Calendars->Gmail Account->AccountInfo->OutgoingMailserver SMTP" I now have a primary server which seems to connect to my first account and several "other SMTP server" which contain either details of the first account or the second account (which I actually deleted aleady).
Should I delete those additional servers? How can I do this? Does anyone have experience with this kind of issue?
    Thanks a lot in advance.

I did put all the informations and still it does not work telling that these informations are not right!!!!
    HELP please

  • Outgoing server does not work when I email

I have set up my iPhone tu work with Hotmail and it works with the ingoing server but I can't send mails. When I try to send mails it says: The connection to the outgoing server smtp.live.com failed.
    Can anyone help.
I am a premium hotmail user.

The problem is probably the wrong host name. If you have an MSN account the outgoing server may be different than it is for Hotmail. If you log in to your web mail account and go to the Support page you should be able to find instructions to set up POP3 mail. In those instructions should be the host name, port, and any other settings you need.
Usually you just enter the first part of your email address as the user name, but you should be able to confirm this in the POP3 setup instructions. If the user name alone doesn't work then try the full email address. Also, if you have a login name to MSN that is different from your email address you can try that also.
Regarding the "<hostname>:25" entry, many people have found that email sends faster if you specify the port number; if you don't, the iPhone tries all possible ports which can take several minutes. This isn't your problem, but it is good practice to specify the port number. In versions before 1.1.1 the only way to do this was to put the port number after the host name, separated by a colon. In 1.1.1 there is a separate field for in in the Advanced settings.
It would be helpful to know the error message you are getting when you try to send. That will determine whether the iPhone is not finding the server, or is finding it but the send is being rejected by the server.
Keep at it; there is a way to get it to work.

  • TS3899 iPad 3 will no longer send mail. "Server does not allow relaying".  How can I fix?

My iPad 3 will no longer send mail. "The server does not allow relaying:.  This happens on both cellular and wifi.  It happens for all recipients.  It does receive mail fins.  How can I fix this?

Try going into Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > select the account > account name , tap on SMTP (under the 'Outgoing Mail Server' heading) and then tap on your Primary Server and try entering your email account and password and see if it then works

  • Can't send mail - outgoing server problem

I am using Mail. OS X.4.6. Yesterday I used Mail with no problem. Today when I 'sent' an email, a pop up told me I couldn't use the outgoing server (the server in the email account selected), and suggested two others (one of which is no longer an account). The outgoing server for the email account selected has not changed.

Mail keeps information about outgoing servers in a separate list, independently of any specific mail account. The account settings just associate one of the available outgoing servers with each account. Deleting an account doesn't remove the outgoing server from the list. Orphaned or dangling outgoing server entries (i.e. not associated with any account) sometimes cause sending problems, so you may want to fix that, even though it could very well have nothing to do with your problem -- actually, it could very well be that you don't have a problem, and this is just a transient error.
Go to Preferences > Accounts > Account Information > Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP), choose Edit Server List from the popup menu, and delete any servers that shouldn't be there. The Edit Server List sheet shows the account each outgoing server is associated with.
Alternatively, Mail comes with some scripts available under the Script menu when that menu is enabled. There is a Manage SMTP Servers there that finds any unused outgoing mail servers and gives you the option to delete them. Type "Script Menu" in Mail Help for more information on this feature.

  • Outgoing server password not retained

I have configured my iPhone for 2 email accounts: gmail and OptOnline. According to my ISP (OptOnline), I must use their outgoing mail server. OK, no problem.
I configured my outgoing server to be the OptOnline server, along with my username and password and I'm able to send email.
The problem is that my password is not retained. So 10 minutes later, I cannot send email. When I look at the Advanced Mail settings, the Outgoing Server password field is blank. It should contain asterisks like the other password fields.
    Any ideas?

You are not meant to see passwords.  Usually the Outgoing password is the same as the Incoming.

  • Mail, outgoing server shut down, incoming mail is working

I can't send mail. When sending, I get a message that outgoing server is shut down. I have no problem receiving mail.
I installed Mountain Lion a few days ago (on my MBP), dont know if there is a connection?. I have the same problem
on my iMac. I have not installed Mountain Lion on the iMac. I called the provider (telia). The say they don't have any problem.
I connected to web mail and sent mail from there. It worked.
I would be grateful for suggestions how to find the problem.
    Thanks in advance!

How is your Mail preferences set up for outgoing? Port 25? No authentication? SSL checkbox not checked? And I assume you mean that you can send email when you are at home when your computer is affiliated to your wireless router, not that you specified 192.168.1.1 or whatever as your smtp server in Mail's setup. If your outgoing mail server is through an email account provided by your ISP, they frequently do not require authentication because they can authenticate on the fact that your IP address belongs to their pool of IP addresses -- when you are at home. But when you aren't home, then you are trying to relay mail from a "foreign" IP address through their server -- and if the mail isn't going to one of their accounts, they block those, otherwise every spammer in the universe would be relaying spam through their servers. I would try changing your outgoing mail config to port 587 with username/password authentication and SSL checkbox checked. I would try similar changes on the incoming side, SSL checked and port 993 if imap or 995 if pop -- if you leave it 143 or 110 without SSL then your incoming mail traffic, including you sending your password, is done "in the clear." The SSL settings should work whether you are at home or on the road. If they don't work, contact your email provider and ask them how to set up a common configuration that works from home and anywhere else.

  • Mail Outgoing Server

I have all my mail on my Touch now, but I cannot send any messages. It says my outgoing server isnt correct. I checked my mail settings to get it, and I put it in correctly.
    Any suggestions?

Try deleting the account from your iPod (Settings> Mail> *your account description*> Delete Account). Then reset your network settings (Settings> General> Reset> Reset Network Settings).
Then re-add the account with the settings listed here: http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/mailhelper/

  • "save sent  mail on server" does not work

    Hello,
When I send a Mail by MAIL via my IMAP account MAIL failed to save the sent mail on the server. However I can see the folder where usually sent mails are stored I have send by web mail. In the preferences I positively checked the "save mail on server" box and chose to store sent mails forever
I also cannot save email drafts. I get always an error message that the mail cannot be saved.
I have a similar issue that deleted mails are not moved to the "trash" folder of my mail account.
    Thanks & Regards, Joe

That command is mentioned in the “Renaming, moving, or deleting a mailbox” article, for example, but you wouldn’t find it searching for a solution to your problem in Mail Help amongst other reasons because it’s not a solution, it’s a workaround. Doing that shouldn’t be necessary for Mail to be able to store messages on the server, only for telling it to use a mailbox different from the one it would use by default.
Mail should be able to create any necessary mailboxes on the server or realize that they’re already there. If it doesn’t, it’s because there is something amiss, the problem usually being that the server uses a NAMESPACE feature that Mail doesn’t handle properly and that causes server-stored mailboxes to appear as subfolders of the account’s Inbox, even though they really aren’t — see “Can't create folders, only subfolders of INBOX” in the Courier FAQ, for example. Those IMAP accounts require INBOX to be put in Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > IMAP Path Prefix for Mail to handle them properly.

  • Mail Outgoing Server almost ALWAYS offline (ATT internet)

I realize this is a common issue (Google efforts were made before posting this), but solutions seem to be elusive. I have ATT internet (Uverse), and my Mail 4.5 outgoing emails won't go. They "spin" in the outbox for up to an hour before something clicks and they go.
ATT outgoing port is supported to be 995 with SSL. That's what I have set. Incoming port is supposed to be 465, but that's irrelevant here (because mail arrives fine, it's sending that's an issue, and because Mail allows you to specify the outgoing server port, but has no comparable entry for incoming server port anyways).
I can send mail is I use ATT webmail; it's Mail 4.5 that fails. Right-clickng on the ATT server in Mail shows that Mail regards that server as "offline."
Emails I want to send will, as previously stated, eventually go through if I let them sit for an hour in the outbox. That's no good for time-sensitive business, of course, and Apple's glitch with offline outgoing mail servers is quite famous.
    Ideas? Fixes?

I think you got the incoming and outgoing ports reversed. I think incoming is 995 and outgoing is 465.

  • A mail POP server is not downloading to my Mac. (It is fine on my iPhone.)

My mail application (Mail 5.2) is not downloading one of my POP servers. The others are fine and this one downloads OK to my iPhone. I have tried rebuilding the mail account and same problem. This used to work fine until a couple of weeks ago. The communication test says OK so the password and address are fine. Any one with similar experience? Any ideas on how to fix?

The answer of BobTheFisherman is perfect.
If your provider also have an IMAP server it is only a matter to setup your mail.
If your provider has only POP  you can try to set the server to do not delete the mail after downloaded by the iPhone.  Not all POP servers let you to use this setting.  Try the setting on the iPhone and you will receive the mails also on the Mac.  But if you get the mail before with the Mac you will not have it in the iPhone.
I have only IMAP, do not know if you can set also Mail on Mac to leave mail on the server after download.
But if you leave the messages on the server with both your devices you should remember to connect to the server from time to time with a browser to manually delete the mail or your box will quickly be full.
