Mail password won't stick

Hiya,
Every time I log onto my server to collect Mail, the warning triangle appears next to "Inbox".
I have to log onto webmail, reset password each time, then it works.
(However, it seems to send any mail fine though)
Is it some problem with Mail preferences?
Thanks

Carey,
A couple of things first you make it very difficult to help you when you don't tell us anything about your system. Please complete your Profile by clicking Your Stuff in the upper right of this page then select Preferences and then fill in the pertinent infomation.
You can also start by using Apple's Mail Setup, Troubleshooting etc.. article.

The column settings in Mail suddenly won't stick. Probably a corrupt preference? What's the best way to deal with the problem?
    Thanks,

Well, in theory, if we backup the whole shmeer, we can at least go back to where we are now...
Quit Mail. First I'd backup these two Mail folders, by right clicking on them in the Finder, then choose Archive/Compress.
    Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail
    Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail Downloads
Right click on that Mail folder, choose archive, you'll get everything in the folder, and the folder itself in a file called Mail.zip, move it to a safe place, same for the Mail Downloads folder... only the plist is separate.
Try dragging this file to the desktop in case we need to put it back later...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
(May or may not require you to setup your account(s) again.)
Then In your home folder, try moving this +folder & file+ to the Desktop then reboot...
First, Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these +folder & file+ to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    These too...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/<[email protected]>/.mboxCache.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/.mboxCache.plist
    Reboot.

    Hello,
Is there more than one entry for that account in Keychain Access?
I mean there should be 2, one for incoming & one for outgoing.
The Password rejection can confuse people since it's a catch all meaning...
This Password, Username, Authentication method... is not recognized on this Port to this Server, or a server end problem.
If using a browser to login via WebMail works it's not Name or Password, but one of the other ones.
    The receiving email ports are:
    IMAP is port 143
    IMAP-SSL is port 993
    POP is port 110
    POP-SSL is port 995
    Outgoing ports are...
SMTP and SMTP-SSL is on ports 25, 587 and 465. Port 587 has to be SSL, and port 465 is enforced TLS-wrapped and is generally used by Outlook users.
    Is it gMail maybe?
    Gmail send but not receive...
Here are two steps that have come in handy in related situations
    1) login to gmail on your computer or device via a web browser
    2) once logged in successfully, go to this URL to unlock:
    https://www.google.com/accounts/DisplayUnlockCaptch

  • ICloud password won't stick on new airport extreme

    Folks,
This worked fine until upgrading Mac to Yosemite, which i would imagine has no real bearing on the matter at hand...
After upgrading to Yosemite, the 'back to my mac' password(iCloud id) will not stick - as soon as i update settings on new airport extreme, password is gone and 'can not connect to iCloud' is back... i have a new airport express that remains logged in. I have rebooted, removed and re-added, no luck - any ideas?
    thanks!

    Thanks Benny!
I don’t have the problem - I’m just perusing the board trying to learn something new from other people’s problems & answers like yours, that were fixed with a call are useful to see.

So after running the update from the link you provided, I get 3 out of 4 Site definitions to stick.
    Some progress made

  • AOL mail server/thru Mail-password?

Have ALL up-to-date software, recently upgraded to iLife '11 - & all of a sudden it seems that my AOL password won't "stick" in my "keychain" -- I keep checking the box & every time I log out/in it keeps asking me to re-enter password. Anyone know if AOL has changed their imap servers in some way that is causing this, or if there is some way for me to get around this?

I was able to fix my connection following the steps in this link. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3276
Aol must have changed the IMAP port number without warning. The instructions on the aol site for Apple Mail listed the wrong port, too.
    good luck!

  • Networked user accounts, mail passwords not saving or notes?

    Hi there,
I have a mac mini set up as a server with latest software. On it i have 20 networked users which use between them for different mac mini's.
Problem which i have come across and i haven't found a solution yet. When i created them emails on there user accounts the incoming mail password won't save? On occasion i has saved, but once log out of the user and log back in the password has gone. which then it prompts me to keep typing the password in and won't save the password. This is very frustrating!!
I have also just noticed when i put message in notes and then log out and log in the the message has gone. This got me thinking it could be something with the user account not saving any data that put in? I don't really want to reformat the server if i don't have to.
If anyone has solution to this problem, it would really handy to know?

I click the Note button, nothing happens. The feature is completely out of service. I don't understand. Am I missing something obvious? I have tried the keystrokes too, no reaction at all, no errors, just can't use Notes, at all! rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! Please help.
Update: I opened Console to see if I could find any errors immediate after trying to create a note and this is what I found:
    6/26/08 10:28:31 PM Mail[236] * Assertion failure in +[NoteView updateFontAndRule:], /SourceCache/Mail/Mail-924/MessageViewer.subproj/NoteView.m:149

  • Password for icloud won't stick on iPhone 6

Settings for icloud repeatedly ask me to enter AppleID Password - it won't stick. I have been noticing lately that it seems to disappear when moving out of wifi and changing over to LTE or even sometimes 4G areas. I've done all the resets, and signed out and into iCloud re-entering my Apple Id & password numerous times. It still disappears after short time. At present I'm unsure whether it happens when in wifi area all the time or not. It's frustrating when every time I reply to an email or txt it asks me to enter A-ID-Psswd-; then I hit cancel and can go ahead and finish the email or txt. I also a few times during the time this box popped up, went into iCloud settings and again the psswd had disappeared!
I've had this iPhone6 (64GB) for 10 days and it has newest 8.1.1 and this prob has been happening from the beginning.

It stopped with 8.1.2 update to iOS
UPDATED INFO: It's back. I called Apple Help desk and they said it's built into iph 6, that the box for password stays blank but the info is STORED INSIDE THE PHONE somplace, so it's really there, even tho' it doesn't appear that it is.
So even tho' the password box is blank, it's not asking me for the password anymore like it did in the past.

mail.app won't leave my password field blank on OS X Mavericks. I need it blank for security.  How to fix?

  • Macbook keeps forgetting mail password on restart

Why does my macbook pro lose mail password, go to default wallpaper, load calendar when I restart or turn on my computer? How can I fix this?

Repairing the permissions of a home folder in Lion is a complicated procedure. I don’t know of a simpler one that always works.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    chmod -R -N ~
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. When a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) appears below what you entered, it’s done. You may see a few error messages about an “invalid argument” while the command is running. You can ignore those. If you get an error message with the words “Permission denied,” enter this:
    sudo !!
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
Next, boot from your recovery partition by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the recovery desktop appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, enter “resetpassword” (without the quotes) and press return. A Reset Password window opens. You’re not going to reset the password.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.

  • I have Version 11 in the Adobe Reader now.  Now I can't open-password won't work

I have downloaded my new verison 11--now I can't open. Password won't work

Thank you for the message. That also tells us that you're on a Mac. The error is a strange one, -1712 means "timeout" and it's hard to think what will cause that. Some more questions. Please answer them all, or let us know if any of the questions don't make sense.
    1. Can you open the Adobe Reader app in the normal way? That is, from Applications?
    2. Can you open other PDF files, from web pages rather than mail? Here is one to try out http://www.adobe.com/enterprise/pdfs/ebxml_faq.pdf - it isn't to read it's just a test. What happens?
    3. What is your mail app? That is, at the time of this -1712 error, what app name is shown at the left of the menu bar?

  • Mail port settings not sticking

I'm having trouble with port settings not sticking in mac mail.  When I start Mac Mail (v5.1, running in Lion) the program won't read mail in my iCloud account because the port settings are incorrect (port 143).  I click on the "Use SSL" box, which changes the port setting to 993.  I save the changes and everything works fine until I quit and restart the program.  The port settings revert to 143 and the SSL box is unchecked.  The issue, obviously, is that the changed settings are not being saved.  I deleted the iCloud IMAP account and reinstalled.  It reinstalled with the correct 993 SSL setting, but as soon as I quit the program and restarted, it reverted to 143, no SSL.  Anyone have an idea what is going on?

To solve the problem of mail port seetings not sticking required deleting the Accounts.plist in this mail directory:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Accounts.plist

  • Mail App won't let me reply/reply all to messages

    Hi folks,
Unfortunalty, I have a problem on my hands. My Mail application won't let me "Reply" or "Reply all" to certain messages. I noticed so far that I cannot reply to messages from the GMail domain. If I click on "Reply" or "Reply All", the buttons toggle like they have been clicked, but nothing happens. When I look in the Console application, I see the following entry every time I hit those two buttons:
    2006-09-10 16:28:54.794 Mail[1654] * -[NSCFArray insertObject:atIndex:]: attempt to insert nil
Now, I also cannot attach anything to any message. This is a consistent problem that is a real pain! If I want to send an attachment, I have to go to the webmail portal and use that to send messages with attachements. When I click on the paperclip icon in the toolbar, I see this message in the Console application:
2006-09-10 16:51:13.154 Mail[1654] Exception raised during posting of notification. Ignored. exception: * -[NSCFArray insertObject:atIndex:]: attempt to insert nil
What does this mean and what can I do to correct this issue? Thanks in advance!

    Hola Jaime.
This problem in Mail is usually caused by some Launch Services cache or preferences corruption. The following article describes how to manually reset Launch Services -- the notes at the bottom of the article also provide information about the side effects of deleting each of the files involved:
    Resetting Launch Services
If you prefer using a cache cleaning utility instead of following the manual procedure described in the previous article, this other article provides links to some utilities that can be used for troubleshooting and cache cleaning:
Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption
It seems that the most appropriate utility for solving this particular problem is Tiger Cache Cleaner, but you may also want to consider other utilities, such as OnyX, or Cache Out X, which are free. Whatever utility you choose, be sure to read this first:
Side effects of System cache cleaning
As an example, this is how you should proceed with OnyX:
    1. Quit all applications.
    2. Launch OnyX and enter your administrator password.
    3. Click Maintenance. In the Reset section, check LaunchServices database.
    4. You may uncheck any other pre-checked options if you wish.
    5. Click the Execute button.
    6. Restart the computer.

  • Am using Safari 6.0.5, suddenly my Yahoo mail account won't keep me logged in and the 'keep me logged in' button has disappeared. It is still there on Chrome so am assuming it is a Safari issue. It just happened suddenly. Have reset Safari.

Am using Safari 6.0.5, suddenly my Yahoo mail account won't keep me logged in and the 'keep me logged in' button has disappeared. It is still there on Chrome so am assuming it is a Safari issue. It just happened suddenly. Have reset Safari, cache and also changed my Yahoo password but problem is still there.

I still don't understand what the problem that you are experiencing is. If you get to a page where yahoo is asking JUST for your password, and there is no box for username (it may have your username displayed, but not in a enter box), then you ARE "being kept signed in"  You can verify this by instead of entering your password, go to www.yahoo.com home page, and it will say something like "Hi, Amber"   This means you ARE signed in.
When you get that page asking for just your password, you are NOT being asked to sign in again. You are simply being asked to verify/enter your assword an Nth time. If you get that page right after entering your username and password, try clicking the "back" (previous page) button. It might just go to your inbox.
If this is the case, your problem has nothing to do with being kept signed in or not, the problem is that for some (unknown to me) reason, yahoo is asking you to re-enter your password, kind of like when your mac asks for your mac password when changing system settings. Yahoo does this as a safety feature when you go to account settings, and apparently abritary other times. I wish I understood just why I get it every time after signing in.
It could be because I have java turned off. It could be because I don't accept third party cookies. Maybe a cache file. Or a hundred other things... I don't know. It could simply be yahoo is scrooing safari users. I have glanced at the html, but to really understand it, it would take me days. There are over 25 places where username and password are in the html "source" code of the yahoo login page, and even understanding that may not tell me. In the past, I have seen code essentiall saying "if IE x.3.2" do this, if chrome do that, if mozilla do something else, otherwise make it next to impossible...."
My problem is not only I get asked for my assword a second time, but also (and only very recently) I do not get a prompt to save username and pasword. I have gone to yahoo help pages to try to figure it out, and I feel like I just run in circles. If one wants to send a question in, they have to answer half a dozen questions disclosing private information. And I pay yahoo $20/year. grrr
If when you are trying to access your yahoo mail and you are being asked to enter both your username and password, but didn't sign out of yahoo, then indeed your are not being "kept signed in"

  • Mail password

Can anyone tell me why I have to reset my mail password everyday? Sometimes its works if I open .mac on the internet but then won't work on my computer or for Apple ID. Getting really frustrated bc then it messes up my treo. thx

i had the same problem after the leopard upgrade. i recently discovered that the mail program was set to open using rosetta. i unchecked that and it didn't and hasn't asked for my passwords since. the above is assuming that you have gone through the process of entering your passwords into your keychain and left them there since i have read many people suggesting deleting and reentering manually into the keychain. anyhow, for those who don't know how to change the rosetta setting here it goes. close out of the mail program. open the application folder and highlight the mail program icon. use command+i to bring up the info window. under general info you will see a box followed by open using rosetta. uncheck the box. close the info window and launch the program. i haven't had to enter a passwords since.
