Mail pdf from MAC

Adobe makes it difficult to email an attachment of a large PDF file. Apparently, it attaches an addition to the file to make it too large to mail. In my case the size of the file was 14.9 meg. Postmaster rejected it, Safari and gmail Chrome claiming that it is 21 meg. It seems that ADOBE is trying to force the user to subscribe to paid services. I temporarily solved the problem by using dropbox and the like.

Sorry, a PDF file must be treated as a binary file in all cases by email. That's the rule, because otherwise the file will be broken. The file which arrives will be exactly the same size, it is the email which is bigger. You'd see the same effect with a JPEG of that size, for example.
This effect is discussed remarkably little, and I was wrong about 25%, can be 33%. It is sometimes called "attachment bloat". But look here for example: Send large files to other people (search for "bloat"). Some web services account for the space after bloat, some before, which is discussed here Web Mail Blog: What is the size limit for messages and attachments? Technically, mail is sent in a format called MIME which turns attachments into text using a simple scheme called Base64.
You don't seem especially willing to believe me, and seem to prefer the idea that Adobe have conspired to break Mac mail to sell their services; so I will stop there. Take it or leave it, nothing will change. Unless I'm wrong, of course.

• Sending pdfs from Mac Mail to Outlook

I have users that are sending pdfs from mac mail to outlook and the attachements are not going through. All you see is the paperclip and nothing else. This has just started happening. I am telling the users to send emails as plain text with windows friendly attachement as well as to put the attachment in the email. Anyone have any idea how to fix this. There are some unhappy users.
Thank you for the help

Outlook for Mac has no option to import from Apple's Mail application. The best suggestion I can offer is that you use an IMAP account to transfer your messages.
Get a free Gmail IMAP account from Google and connect to the account in Mail. Drag your messages into the account to copy them to the server.
Connect to the same account in Outlook and copy your messages from the server to folders under On My Computer.
Another option is to get a third party tool that are available online.
One tool that I am familiar with is Apple Mail Export
Or you can find more on
google or

Hope this helps!

• PDF from Mac to iBooks on iPad - how?

PDF from Mac to iBooks on iPad - how?
Before iBooks for Mac came along I simply dragged my PDF to iTunes and synced my iPad. I foolishly installed Mavericks and iBooks on my Mac.
Now I have no idea how to drop PDF's to my iPad.
There is a support article but no helpful at
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4227?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
What must I do? I simply want Apple drag 'n drop functionality back please.

You should be able to add the PDF to the iBooks app on your Mac via File > Add To Library, and if you then connect your iPad to your Mac and select it on the left-hand sidebar of your Mac's iTunes then it should show on the iPad's Books tab for syncing to your iPad's iBooks app.
Or you can email the PDF to yourself and use 'open in' in the Mail app on your iPad to copy it into the iBooks app.

• Combining PDFs from MACs and PCs

Is there a way to effortless combine fairly large pdfs created on MACs and on PCs (usually containing images and tables)? We have had terrible problems with this, including image and caption distortion, etc. Sometimes, we are unable to create pdfs on a PC if we are sent a Word document created on a MAC.
Any advise could be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

If I print to PDF, nothing at all happens.
If I try to do a Save As, I get the following message:
“The export failed. The document could not be prepared for exporting.”
If I right click on the file name and use Convert to Adobe PDF, it will start the process and then stop and return to the Word document.

• Mail PDF from Pages...doesn't use default app

Have set Mail to indicate Thunderbird as default mail client. Clicking on a mailto link in Safari opens Thunderbird, as expected.
But...
In Pages, doing Share/Mail PDF, Mail opens, not Thunderbird. Have examined the Preferences .plist where such instructions are stored, and it correctly shows Thunderbird, as was set in Mail.
Is there an editable .plist or something somewhere that I can edit to get Pages to behave?
Thx.

• Osx 10.8.2.- no longer enables "mail pdf" from print menu

ever since last software update- last week, the option of MAil PDF directly from print menu in all programs seems to work- but doesnt link to the mail- the only option is to save as pdf to desktop and send a new mail.
Has anyone else encountered this new bug?

Works for me - unfortunately, I don't use Apple's Mail too often and it seems to default to Mail... I just tried it and it worked, though. Running the latest OS release here on a late 2011 MBP.

• Migrating from Entourage and now can't send mail except from Mac account

I've just started using Mail after using Entourage for many years and I must say it's been a frustrating start (having separate applications for Mail, Address Book and Calendar is a pita so far). But most importantly I can't get Mail to allow me to send mail from any account other than from my .Mac account (no problems receiving mail). I'm using the same outgoing server settings as in Entourage but no joy - I get an error message saying it can't use the outgoing server. I have no problems with this in Entourage. For example, from Entourage I can send mail using my BT Internet account or my Bulldog Home account using the following outgoing mail server settings:
SMTP SERVER: mail.bulldoghome.com
ACCOUNT ID: [email protected]
PASSWORD: my email password
Also, how do I access my hotmail?

Ok here's another one. When I delete a mail retrieved from a non Mac mail account (eg my BT Internet account) and empty my Trash in Mail it does not delete the email off the (BT Internet) server. I have not checked "remove copy from server after retrieving a message" so that I can access the email from multiple locations. But when I do delete it I obviously want it removed from the server.

• Mail disappears from Mac account inbox

Hi folks.
I'm a relative apple newby. I have 2 mail accounts, 1 of which is an apple mail account. On 2 occasions now all the mail in my mac inbox has just disappeared. Any ideas how to retrieve them and why is this happening?
Tks in advance

My wife has a sub-account on our MM family pack subscription and had this issue: occasionally mail on her iPhone would appear briefly in the iPhone inbox, then disappear from the list. It never showed up in Mail.app at all. (I have the master account on this family pack and haven't had this issue… knock on wood.)
I was also a recipient on some of those mails -- but if I forwarded them to her she still didn't get them. I had to copy the text out of the messages and paste into a new mail. That worked. So it seems there's something in the mail header (perhaps?) that causes this… yet the mails have not all been from the same person / address. In fact, mail from person "A" might do this disappearing thing today, yet mail from the same person "A" might work fine tomorrow. It's that sort of multi-variable, intermittent problem that's very hard to pin down.
I tried changing her password -- to guarantee that only her known clients were logging in (no lurking POP mail readers that she'd forgotten about). No effect. Then I tried turning off her junk filters, both local and online at MobileMe (thinking maybe some rule was out of control -- deleting random messages, rather than filing them as junk). No effect (other than a lot of complaints from her about junk in her inbox, of course).
Finally, she suggested that maybe it had to do with MM push services -- since it only happens on the iPhone, not on her Mac. We turned off push on her iPhone and voila! It seems to have fixed the issue.
I haven't found anyone else who's connected this with data push on the iPhone. I'd be interested if other folks who try this as a solution would see if it works for them and post results here.

• See e-mails sent from Mac on iPhone?

Hi, I have OSX 10.9.1 on my Macbook and ios 7 on my iPhone and I use iCloud. What can I do to make an e-mail sent from my Mac turn up on my iPhone when I search for it on the iPhone for instance by using the sent e-mail´s subject content?
Kind regards

The default setup on the phone does not synchronise the "sent" folder, so it wont appear on your webmail account.
If you enable synchronisation for that folder, it will appear on your webmail account as a new folder called "sent items", So you end up with a "sent" and a "sent items" folder on your webmail account.
You can enable folder sychronisation by the following sequence.
Messaging - select account - press menu - select "folders (5)" - press menu - select "manage folder (2)".
You will then be given the option whether to sync, or not sync a folder.
Any folder that you sync, will appear on your webmail account next time you connect.
This only works for the default IMAP setup.

• Import a new mail account from mac to iPhone

Hello folks,
I have a macbook pro and an iPhone 4. The first time I connected my iPhone to the macbook it imported all the mail accounts, with all the settings and so on. Now, I create a new email account on my macbook and I cannot figure out how to import this new mail account on the iPhone. Could you help me please?
Thanks

Oh no So if I want this account on my iPhone I have to create it directly from iPhone
Correct.
You create the account in mail on your Mac & on your phone. Since it's an exchange account, they will both be kept in sync. When you select sync mail accounts in iTunes, it's only the account settings that are synced, no actual messages are synced at all. You normally only do this one to transfer the account settings to your phone.

• Mail moved from .mac inbox to .mac server not updating on both machines

this is a weird one. i have a .mac account which i use for my email and i run apple's mail app. on both my imac and my ibook. it used to be that if i read some new mail in my .mac inbox and then either deleted it or dragged it to one of my folders on the .mac server, when i went to my other machine, mail would recognize that i've done this and everything would look exactly as it did on the original machine - messages either deleted or moved. not so anymore. now i go to the other machine and the messages that i've either read or moved still appear as unread. when i ask this machine to go and look for new mail, it finds things so it's not as if it's not talking to the .mac server at all. don't even ask me what happens if i start moving those same files around on the second machine. i have no idea how it can think both exist. it's like quantum physics or something. it's this but it's that. very strange.

What I did with moderate success:
-- A backup from the SL server installation I had + another separate backup of /var/spool/imap/dovecot directory.
-- Some other backups, for example Server Admin prefs, OD, Shared Files, etc.
-- Since the server was a mess, formatted the disk and installed Lion Server from scratch.
-- In my case, there was a mess with users and the way Mail was handled with virtual aliases, etc. I read about how the dovecot directory worked from the link provided before and decided to follow a similar approach, with some issues
-------- Created the new users in Lion Server and used the Server app to get into the Directory app and find the new user's GUIDs (about 30 users so it took a while but weren't too many).
-------- Looked up the old GUID for each user and pulled the corresponding mail directory from /var/spool/imap/dovecot/mail changing the directory name with the new name and
-------- IMPORTANT: also changing the owner as suggested on the link (i.e., _dovecot=read/write, everyone=none). These permission modifications need to be applied recursively, which is easier using terminal.
-- The issue with this method is that it seems to, sometimes(?), update the file modification dates, which in turn may cause Mail.app on OS X and on iOS Mail to show incorrect dates for each e-mail on the mail list.
-------- I'm still reading about how to correct this issue I found with a particularly huge Inbox (50K+ mails, around 50GB, yikes).
-------- In my case the rest of the config was pretty simple, I used the Server app the setup DNS and Server Admin + modified postfix config file to suit some other requirements.
I hope I'm staying on topic on this thread and that my experience can be of help, in case others run into the same issues.

• Mail lost from .mac and locally, can i restore from cache???

Hi,
I have 2 years worth of messages about 3000 on .mac and have
set up tiger mail to view these via imap and cache all messages
and attachments locally.
A couple of days ago i got a warning you are running out of space from
.mac so deleted (via the webmail interface) the oldest 500 messages.
I also deleted them from trash (again via the web interface).
When i then opened mail it showed 0 messages. I then logged back
into .mac webmail and all messages had been deleted!!!
I emailed .mac support about restoring my account but am not getting
any sensible help.
I have located in my mail/imap folder the cache folder which contains most messages (no emlx extension) up to 17 June 2006, it is about 600Mb.
However the message folder is empty (contains one recent message).
I have tried setting up a dummy imap account and moving the data to it and attempting to import the mailbox back in but no joy. Most help I can find is targetted at people who still have the message folder intact.
Any help greatly appreciated!!!!!!!!
imac g5 1.8mhz Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Hi Toby.
Sounds like you upgraded to Tiger Mail around 17 June 2006, right? And the cache folder you're talking about is called CachedMessages, right? If that's the case, then what seems to have happened is the following.
For some reason, your mail was deleted from the server (don't ask me why), and Mail deleted the cached copies from your disk as well after synchronizing with the server. BUT, the format used by Mail 2.x to store messages on disk is different from the format used by Mail 1.x. The CachedMessages folder is where Mail 1.x stored cached messages. Mail 2.x uses Messages folders and *.emlx files instead. Mail 2.x leaves the old files used by Mail 1.x there and just ignores them after the conversion. That's why CachedMessages has survived the disaster, whereas Messages hasn't. And that's also why you cannot see the cached messages in Mail now.
The only way I know of to recover those messages is using Emailchemy to convert them to mbox format first, then import them back into Mail doing File > Import Mailboxes and choosing Other as the data format. I haven't tried Emailchemy myself, so I don't know how it works.

• Calibrating Color in Windows XP to view PDFs from Mac version of IDCS3

I have a customer in another city and all of their staff, who work with me, use Windows XP on Dell desktops with Dell LCD flat displays.
Four the past four years they have been happy with reviewing my designs as Review PDFs, exported from InDesign CS, CS2 and CS3, and initiated for review and comment with Acrobat 7 Professional. They have been satisfied with the color representation from viewing my PDFs on their screen, with free Adobe Reader, and they like the speed and cost cutting that results from not requiring a printed calibrated color proof to sign off on before going to press. When I export to PDF from InDesign, I make my Destination Profile "U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2" and I include the Destination Profile.
Then I designed a poster for them that was mostly teal (a color between green and blue. They saw the color as medium blue on their screens and approved job to go to press. They were disappointed to find the final printed pieces looking teal.
I know there is expensive third party calibration software out there but is there adequate color calibration for my non-technical customers using Windows XP on Dell LCD Displays?
I use Apple CRT Displays an I use the OS X System Preferences/Displays dialog to set my color temperature to 65000 and my Gamma to 1.8 and then I use the slider controls to adjust for the ambient light in my office. The color I see on my monitor is the same color I get when my design projects come off the printing presses.
Does Windows XP have software monitor controls to give the Dell workstations basic generic color calibration? Does XP let the user adjust the color temperature and Gamma settings?

Thank you all for your advise.
In the earlier part of this decade I required customers to sign off on a calibrated color contract proof. It was either a Fiery or an Iris color proof, before the job went to film separations. Then I would have the costumer view a match-print made from the film separations. Then the printers went to direct to plate PostScript imaging after I started my own design studio.
I used Adobe PressReady software RIP with my Epson Stylus Photo 1200 to make pre flight proofs that were a dead-nuts representation of what we would eventually receive off the printing press.
With InDesign and Acrobat providing onscreen separation & overprint previews, the need for me to see match-prints went away and that process moved more into the hands of the printer since they were doing direct to plate pre press imaging in-house.
I have color corrected all the photos I use to provide eye-pleasing-color on the printing press. The customers were happy to omit the printed proof stage to save on costs and the printers liked using just PDFs for customer approval because they liked my color correction and they wanted to speed up the process of getting the job approved and onto the press.
In this recent unique circumstance, my customer picked and purchased the stock art for the background of his flyer and mail card which I produced for him. I used InDesign's eye-dropper tool to make the display type the same color as the dominant highlight color in the stock art.
This is a circumstance were a printed color proof would be best and since this customer has a creative eye for color, I will probably ship color proofs to him in the future. I plan to keep the status quo with my other customers, using only emailed PDFs for review because it has been successful this way for a long time and it avoids the cost of color proofs, next day shipping, and lets me work quickly with customers and printers that are hundreds of miles away because of the customers' email accounts and the printers' FTP servers.
I appreciate all the input I have received in these forums.

• Cannot mail pdf from Pages

I have opened a Word document in Pages, and then after correcting it, I have tried to send as a .pdf by Mail. But the Mail attachment turns out to be a picture not an attachment. Does anyone else have this problem? If so, is there a workaround?
Many thanks
iPad version 3, iOS 5.1.1 and all software fully updated.

I guess you didn't t read my post.
I know how to TAP & HOLD. I've been doing it since the first iPad came out.
Based on your explanation, I can confirm that this problem seems to be happening to emails with one-page PDF files, that are sent from an iOS device only.
The only options that appear when I TAP & HOLD are: Mail, Print and Copy.
And in this case, Copy doesn't seem to work at all! I can't copy the document to a new email or anything like that.
I don't have this problem with emails I receive from other sources, including my Mac, regardless of how many pages or what the size of the PDF file is.
If this is normal behavior, then whoever programmed this at Apple is a total idiot!
I have confirmed that nothing seems to be wrong with the email and attachment as I can still access it from my Mac and from GoodReader on my iPad, and the PDF behaves as expected: I can extract text, highlight, underline, etc. the content in the PDF.
So the problem is with iOS Mail trying to display the PDF in the message as if it was a picture. If the TAP & HOLD would work as expected, then there would be no problem, but at this time there is a problem and it needs to be fixed!
