Mail POP account

Just had to reinstall the OS. Started with 10.6.3 DVD immediately followed by 10.6.8 combo update. Trying to access my Yahoo account in Mail which creates an IMAP account for me (I want a POP account as I had last time). I think there should be a checkbox for 'Automatically Create This Account' in teh Mail setup dialogue (which I'd deselect!) but it is not there (Mail 4.5), Really annoying. Any ideas?

Magic! thank you - but why does the b***** help file not say this? So I now have my POP account running but the 'Default email reader' option (Prefs>General) will not stick to my choice (Mail 4.5). It jumps to 'The Microsoft Hearts Network' (what on earth is that - nothing I've installed?) or anything other than Mail! I suspect that this means that I can't read any new mail even if it comes in. The General pref is acting strangely. If I select 'mail' as the default reader, then (for instance) change the alert sound in the same pane, the default reader resets to 'The Microsoft Hearts Network'. Never had so much trouble. May turn to Thunderbird.

Mac Mail POP accounts + iPhone

Hello, and please forgive me in advance if this has been covered.
I'm trying to sync all of my Mac Mail POP accounts to the iPhone, which at first seemed simple, which it was until on the Mac side Mail started to ask me for passwords over and over again... though on the iPhone side everything seems groovy.
As a work around I've selected only the .Mac accounts to be synced for now.
I'm sure it's an easy fix, just wanted to put this out there in case I'm doing something wrong

Honestly, 'sync' and 'POP' don't belong together in
the same sentence.
You should seriously take a look at using IMAP
technology wherever it is available, converting your
POP3 mailboxes where you can. Mail service at .Mac is
offered in both flavors, and you are far better off
using IMAP.
This is not an iPhone specific matter, as the POP3 vs
IMAP issue comes up almost daily in the
Mail & Address Book forum. You might want to
browse or search it to learn why IMAP is the answer
to those who seek to 'synchronize' mail content.

What I meant by putting 'sync' and 'pop' in the same sentence was syncing the Mac Mail accounts, not necessarily the emails. I understand the difference between pop and imap.
The point of my question revolves around what I've already stated. I'm not looking to argue about semantics, how many terms I've decided to use in one sentence, or a discussion on your opinion of pop vs. imap; just trying to figure out why all of a sudden Mac Mail on the host computer is asking me for passwords over and over again after hooking up the iPhone and attempting to 'sync' mail account information over.

Outlook to Mail (POP account)

Hey guys, recently I decided to make a switch from Outlook 2011 to Mail, and there's a quick question I'd like to ask.
One of my mail accounts in Outlook was a POP account which I already closed on the server. Prior to closing it, I downloaded all its mails to my Outlook so I currently have that entire POP account in "On My Computer" section in Outlook.
I would just like to know how to import this POP account into my Mail app so that I could access it at any time? I had no problem with my other (IMAP) accounts because they synced by themselves, but moving that POP account is a bit confusing.

Ok I found a workaround for it. What I did was install Entourage 2008, then I created a separate folder on my desktop for each of my Outlook Yahoo POP mail folders and drag-n-dropped them from Outlook to my desktop. Then I created folders with the same names in my Entourage and drag-n-dropped the folders from my desktop into the same folders that I created in Entourage one by one.
Finally, I opened my Mail app and clicked Mailbox > New Mailbox and selected "ON MY MAC." Then created a folder and used the File > Import Mailboxes option to import everything from Entourage. A bit of work, but it did the trick so now I have the POP mail I had in my Outlook in my Mail app.

How to convert/move Mail POP accounts *with folders/subfolders* to Gmail for Business?

I currently have several email addresses for my two domains, an Earthlink account (which I will phase out eventually) and a couple of Gmail accounts. They are all POP accounts.
I would like to convert to Gmail for Business, but I can't figure out how to migrate 10s of 1000s of emails that are housed in 200+ folders and subfolders from Mail to Gmail for Business.
The mail migration tools out there don't seem to cover Mac Mail.
Has anyone out there done this?

From Mail:
Add the new account to Mail. One at a Time copy each folder from the POP account to the Google IMAP account, do not copy more than a few hundred emails at a time, they have to be uploaded to the IMAP server, uploads are slow, it takes a while and tends to fail if there are too many.
Repeat until complete
PS: not just your dull life, the dull lives of everyone who sends an email to you as well, wonder how they would think about that (if you told them)

I can not delete mail pop account in iphone 4S

I have set POP mail account earlier but I do not want this account now. I am trying to delete the accont but there is not any button delete account as IMAP mail account have. What is happening? How can I delete the account?

There isn't any reason this POP account should not be able to be deleted. Are there any Restrictions set on the phone? Who is the provider of this email account? I'll assume that you are trying to delete it from Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars? You go to the Mail section, select the account in question, scroll to the bottom of the account page and select delete. However, you are saying when you do this, the Delete Account button does not exist, correct?
The next troubleshooting step after a reset is a restore from backup. You can try that if you like. What happens if you go into the account and toggle the on off button at the top of the account?

Mac Mail POP Account Not Receiving Messages

Using Mac Mail, I am suddenly not receiving messages in a POP account. The gmail account I use is working normally. Under connection doctor both accounts are green. Help, please?

Same problem here since upgrading to Mail 7.1 (1827). All the settings are seemingly correct. The emails are marked as 'Read' on the server but are not downloaded.
The emails are also deleted a week later as set in preferences.
Thinking the emails may have gone elsewhere I used Spotlight to look for them. No success there.
Real puzzle and yet another glitch on the latest Apple Mail.
Come on Apple, get your act together.

From Mail I can send the messages but I is unable to receive because the "signatures" from the server (IP) are not trusted
then I have created another account
using the same Email address
using the same Incoming Mail Server
the file Users/UserName/Library/Mail/V2/POP-name@webmail is no more redable
Selecting a Message it try to load the content but it stay Loading...

From the Finder hold down the option key and click on Go in the menu. Scroll to Library.

Why don't my sent items sync to my iphone from mail "pop" account?

I have the same POP account on mail and my iphone and have itunes set to sync the account. it seems like the only folder that synched was the inbox. I want to be able to sync my account and have sent emails on both mail and my iphone. I send a lot of file attachments for work and it would be great to have the sent emails on my iphone in case I need to resend that attachment if I am not in the office provided I synched my iphone with my computer before I leave the office... any thoughts... I went down the IMAP road and the problem is the email server we are using online doesn't have enough storage to keep all the emails on the server.

Not possible with a POP account.
The email account sync process with iTunes syncs (or transfers) email account setup information for select accounts only from your computer to the iPhone. This does not not involve messages.
The reason the account's Inbox mailbox seemed to sync is because received messages with a POP account are the only server stored messages and if not removed from the server when downloaded by one email client can be downloaded from the server by another - in this case the iPhone.
If you want Sent messages kept synchronized between your computer's email client and the iPhone's email client, you MUST use an IMAP account for this purpose.

Thanks Zyriab. In my mail set up, I have named the server and identified it in the Outgoing Mail Server category - this is the only option I have for Outgoing. Is there an additional step - and if so where would I find it?

IPhone Empties E-Mail POP Account Inbox

How can I prevent iPhone from removing mail from the Inbox on my POP account?

HELP. I have this problem too. I tried to synch mail with outlook in the info tab of itunes in the hope that the emails in iphone would upload into outlook but no luck. I am getting an error that the mail is in use by iphone and therefore cannot synch

Restore Removed Mail POP Account

Earlier this afternoon, in error, I removed a Mail account which contained saved copies of messages, both received and sent. The account was for email from a POP server. The server does not retain messages.
Is there any way to restore the messages that were in my Mail account? Have they actually been removed from my Powerbook or are they still there somewhere, and can I get them back?

Hi Misplaced - welcome to the forums!
Have you done a backup of your computer, or at least your Home folder? The emails actually live in User/Library/Mail which is where you should re-import them from any backup you did.
If you didn't do a backup, I'm guessing you will be doing them from now on

Can't send mails (POP account/SMTP)

Okay, this issue has been posted before, but none of the difficulties or possible solutions described seemed to match my problem, which is:
When I click the "send" button in Mail, it simply does *nothing at all*. It doesn't even seem to try to do anything, let alone give me an error message.
I used to have an iBook with OS X 10.2, and Mail has always worked perfectly fine on that system. Now I just bought a new iBook with Tiger installed. I first updated to 10.4.6, then transferred all my data, including my mail settings and mailboxes, to the new computer, with the result that I can receive mail, but I can't send e-mails. I tried deleting my account and creating a new one, but that didn't change anything. I can send e-mails through my provider's webmail system, so the SMTP server isn't broken down; anyway, my husband is using the same server, and he can send mails, so I guess it's somehow an issue with my computer and not with the provider. My account settings are definitely correct. I can "ping" the mail server. I tried deactivating my firewall, but that wasn't the solution either.
What else could I try? My outgoing mail server is an ordinary port 25 password-protected SMTP server. I strongly suspect that the problem is with 10.4.6, but I'm not exactly keen on the hassle of downgrading my system back to 10.4.5 or whatever... Or is there an easy way to do that?
Any other ideas? I'd be really grateful. Not being able to send mails *****.

Hi Johanna,
Have you tried the Activity Viewer? (Window > Activity Viewer in the menu.) Try sending an email, and see if any error message appears in the Activity Viewer window after you click "Send".

Mail, POP Account, and Keychain password

DIdn't see a "Mail" forum so posted here.
New behavior on the computer, not related to any software update or other changes.
Recently I get a dialog box stating that the ISP server rejected my password, please enter password. The box also offers to keep a copy in my keychain. Thought it might be too many of the same pw in the keychain, so went to keychain access and ensured there's one incoming and one outgoing pw for the ISP in the list. Also did the keychain repair thing and no problems found.
It's an inconsistent behavior, and I'm not sure if there's not a problem at the ISP end. I get mail, but the dialog box every time the computer checks for mail is distracting. Any ideas?

Are all your mailboxes online or greyed out?
Occasionally mine have gone offline when the request for a password has been made.
If any are offline put them back using these instructions from Ernie:-
Click on Mailbox and then on Online Status -- select this account and say to take it back Online. Then Quit Mail, and relaunch. Your provider probably had a problem, and this double step approach should get things back to normal, if the provider has recovered on their end.

Can't send attmnts using yahoo hotmail, can't set up mac mail pop account

Help, can't sent attachments using yahoo or hotmail from my brand new computer! Server, sympatico. Can't set up mac mail either. Very frustrated...can anyone help??!!!

Mail re-downloads messages from POP account

Mail keeps downloading the same messages (ones that have already been downloaded)each time it checks my Yahoo! POP account.
I tried deleting the file 'MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded' file in the 'user folder/Library/Mail/POP account folder/' but that didn't fix it.
I am using Mail (1.3.11) in OS X (10.3.9)

Thanks, Tom, but that box is checked and the dropdown menu below it says after one week. I like to keep them on the server for a week, just in case I need them backed up somewhere.
I failed to mention that I have had my mail set up for two years now without seeing any issue like this. I also have multiple email accounts (all with pretty similar if not identical settings) that are not having this problem.
