Mail - pop-server vs. web-based?

am not sure which is which - one is mail like yahoo that you read via a web browser, the other is read with a program like Apple mail.
I have an account (with time warner roadrunner) that works both ways, I can get mail via Apple Mail AND I can check it on a browswer.
my question: I have been accessing mail via the pop-server since I've had an iPhone, and it works only so-so; it's kind of slow & some HTML stuff can't be read. (Am sure this is the fault of the service provider, not the iPhone hardware or software.)
is it possible to re-configure this account (probably I would have to delete it and start a new one) - as a webmail-based account? are there any advantages to doing that?
thanks
Will Friedwald

You don't have to reconfigure it, you just have to use Safari on the iPhone, like using your browser on your desktop instead of AppleMail.
The downside is that you have to log in every time using Safari on the iPhone, and you have to scroll a lot. It will also be slower as you have to connect to the server to view every message or to compose a message.
I would be interested in hearing more about it's slowness. As for HTML email, mine looks good for both Exchange and POP3 accounts.

I upgraded to Yosemite and now I can't change POP server address in mail preferences because is grey.
Does anyone have the same problem?

After Two weeks our IT figured out why the iphone would not push through emails.  This happened years ago when we had the Treo Smart Phone.  It's an email capacity issue.
This Issue has to do with the amount of emails sitting on the web mail.  Our company holds every past email on the webmail, this is thousands of emails, let's put it this way, in one day I alone receive over 200 hundred emails.  When the phone tries to retrieve current emails it is also trying to push through all the emails on the webmail which some phones are incapable of doing over a certain capacity. So you will receive the message "CANNOT GET MAIL, The connection to the server failed".
I.T. resolved this issue by backing up all emails on the Exchange server for each user.  Then Moved all emails off the webmail to a local PC leaving only the current emails sitting in webmail.  Now our IT has to make sure old emails are moved from the webmail weekly, keeping emails in the webmail to a minimum. Now some companies might not be facing any issues because they probably automatically archive old emails on the webmail.  Our IT did not archive old emails from webmail because they thought they would give employees the capability of looking at old emails from webmail not only their PC.  Since this issue, IT found that employees were not accessing webmail for old emails, they were logging into their office PCs to view old emails, so not having old emails on the webmail is not an issue for our company.   And resolving the issue in this manner worked for us.  Not sure if it's a solution for everyone.
P.S. This also effected Calendars, notes, contacts, etc since we resolved the email exchange "Push" issue, all other features are synching too.

  • Mail POP server Failure

I am trying to set up my sisters pop mail on apple's mail and after typing the incoming mail server it gives me this message
The POP server “mail.yahoo.com” is not responding. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the “Incoming Mail Server” field. If it still doesn’t respond, the server might be temporarily unavailable.
If you continue, you may not be able to receive any email.
there is nothing wrong with my network connection, infact i have my yahoo account hooked to apple's mail and when i set it up i didnt have any problems like that.
Also, i have a .mac account on mail but it has a lighting bolt icon on the side and it keeps giving me a dialog box telling me that .mac rejected my password. i reenter my password and it tells me the same!
What can i do to do this? is it a yahoo problem? or is it a mail problem?
    Intel-based iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Hi,
I can confirm this is not a Apple issue as I cannot connect to the yahoo POP3 server from my Mac Mail  or thunderbird and outlook on my windows PC.  Seems to be a yahoo pop server issue.  Very annoying and yahoo have been no help whatsoever.
Re: Just fixed it, it seems that the Pop server has been changed to pop.yahoo.mail.com   from .co.uk
    Hope that helps.

  • Client/Server to Web-Based application Conversion

    Hi! Everyone,
I have couple of questions for you guys.
Our Client had recently upgraded Forms 4.5 to 6i to move from Client/Server based application to Web based application.
They are using Forms Server 6i Patch Set 1, OAS 4.0.8.1, Windows NT Service Pack 5 and Oracle 7.3. They are facing the following error every now and then, when they run the forms,
"FRM-92100: Your connection to the server was interrupted. This may be the result of a network error or a failure on the server. You will need to re-establish your session."
Please let me know what might be causing the above error. The only problem i can think about might be Oracle 7.3. If i am right only Oracle 8 and above supports Forms 6i.
Can anyone let me know some tips and/or techniques to upgrade Forms 4.5 to 6i. If there are any important settings/steps which we might have over looked during the upgrade, please list them.
Any kind of help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,

  • Apple Mail Pop Server Configuration

    Hi all,
It's not often I post on here but here we go. I have been using Macs ever since the Lisa Electronic Office and have always been perplexed by one strange quirk of the Apple Mail account configuration process. This quirk is now becoming extremely troublesome.
I use BT/Yahoo (I'm not talking about the famous password rejection problem). One main account and several sub-accounts which, for all intents and purposes, can be considered as separate accounts.
Now the problem arises because, while each has a separate email address, they all use the same pop server settings. ie. mail.btinternet.com.
Mail will not allow me to use two accounts with the same pop settings. I can set up and verify the account (doesn't stay on-line because SSL is set and the port is wrong) but when I come make a change and save it I get the message:
    Invalid Directory
The account path /Users/fredbloggs/Library/Mail/V2/[email protected]@mail.btinternet.com is already being used by the account “Another One”
Obviously I've changed the account names. Another One is one of my other accounts. I've got one working by using pop.btinternet.com but I've run out of working aliases. I should be able to set up 10 sub accounts and access them all with Apple Mail. IMAP works OK but that is something I don't wish to use for a number of reasons.
    Anybody else come across this?
I can do all this with Entourage (horrible) and Outlook which I do not intend to buy. Why does Apple make life so difficult sometimes?

    OK Folks,
To save confusion and to all those people who think I am using the same email address for everything, here they are.
         British Telecomm Residential
[email protected]          (USAAF 381st Bomb Group Heavy)
              [email protected]     (My company)
[email protected]          (Master Account for everything else)
         British Telecomm Business
              [email protected]          BT Business E-Mail - I don't use
         Others I have are:
              [email protected]
              [email protected]
              [email protected]
[email protected] currently exists as an IMAP account which works but something I would rather not have.
As you can see, they are all separate and distinct.
As I said before, all hese work just fine with Entourage (nasty and a dead product) and Outlook (something I'm not prepared to buy when the Apple offering should do it all for me and integrates really nicely with iCal, Address Book, Notes etc.
Thank you everybody for trying to help and thanks Defcom but, as you thought, that article is really old hat now.
I am now going to open a large bottle and sit in that darkened room.
If I now get flooded with spam, I know where it's come from.
Goodnight, Good Morning or G'Day depending on where you're from..

  • Treo 800W Can't get email from desktop outlook b/c no exchange server or web-based email

Help... I used to use the "personal business connection" from Sprint before they discontinued using it last fall to get my email.  They housed it on their server by having it sink with my desktop outlook 2000 in real time, then my device (Treo 800w) would sink with their server so that I could respond to email on my treo and it would look the same in my desktop outlook as it did on my treo.  It would show messages read that i had read, and my sent treo messages would appear in my desktop outlook sent folder.  Since Sprint has discontinued "business connection-- personal", I have not been able to get my email in the same fashion.  I don't have an exchange server at work and use POP3 email but it is not a commercial service like yahoo or gmail.  I download my email to my outlook and primarily use outlook on my desktop but want to be able to use my treo to view and respond to email on the fly and have it show the messages I have already addressed in my desktop outlook.  Any ideas?  I am desperate and very frustrated that Sprint discontinued business connection.  Every application I have looked at either required an exchange server or that I house all my email on a web-based site and quit using my desktop outlook.   Thanks....
Post relates to: Treo 800w (Sprint)

Yes, I was very bummed when Sprint discontinued BCPE.
SEVEN Networks, the company that made BCPE for Sprint, has several new products available under beta. None of them seem to offer exactly what we had with BCPE. In fact, one forum posting says that our style of usage (sync'ing directly with the data stored in the Outlook data file) was never actually a supported configuration. Anyway, you can sign up for the beta here if you want to explore the new options: http://community.seven.com/main.php
    Good luck in your search.

  • A mail POP server is not downloading to my Mac. (It is fine on my iPhone.)

My mail application (Mail 5.2) is not downloading one of my POP servers. The others are fine and this one downloads OK to my iPhone. I have tried rebuilding the mail account and same problem. This used to work fine until a couple of weeks ago. The communication test says OK so the password and address are fine. Any one with similar experience? Any ideas on how to fix?

The answer of BobTheFisherman is perfect.
If your provider also have an IMAP server it is only a matter to setup your mail.
If your provider has only POP  you can try to set the server to do not delete the mail after downloaded by the iPhone.  Not all POP servers let you to use this setting.  Try the setting on the iPhone and you will receive the mails also on the Mac.  But if you get the mail before with the Mac you will not have it in the iPhone.
I have only IMAP, do not know if you can set also Mail on Mac to leave mail on the server after download.
But if you leave the messages on the server with both your devices you should remember to connect to the server from time to time with a browser to manually delete the mail or your box will quickly be full.

  • E-mail POP server problem

Hello, I just rebooted 10.4. in Mail I keep getting the notice that the server at mail.comcast.net has rejected my password: yet when I log onto Comcast's site and enter my info I am able to retrieve and send everything. Any suggestions or ideas are most welcome.
    Thanks,

Hello crotona, and a warm welcome to the forums!
yet when I log onto Comcast's site and enter my info I am able to retrieve and send everything
Webmail is quite different, it just uses port 80.
    * The POP3 port for inbound emails is 110 (995 if you want to use secured POP3)
    * And the IMAP port for inbound emails is 143 (993 if you want to use secured IMAP)
    * The SMTP port for outbound emails is 25 or 2525 (465 or 587 if you want to use secured SMTP)
Are you using Port 465, & SSL Authentication?
10.5, but essentially the same values...

  • Delete re-directed mail (POP server) to see it grey out but not delete!?

    Hello,
I'm using MacMail as a host for my Hotmail account. The problem I'm having is that when I chose to delete some messages they (Sender/ Topic info) grey out and do not leave my inbox. I cannot clear these and its frustratingly filling-up my inbox with ghost messages. I have deleted them from my Hotmail account so I cannot understand why they appear on my Mac Inbox.
Any suggestions at how to resolve this would be most gratefully received!
    Thank you all!
    Matt

    Right then...
I've just spent ages looking online and having tried a few things before I thought this final attempt to be futile...
Anyway, a bit of ad-lib and here goes!...
    1. Open up preferences (within Mail)
    2. Preferences ---->Accounts---->Mailbox Behaviours : Uncheck 'Move deleted messages to a separate folder'.
    3. Close this dialogue box and save changes
    4. Menu bar---> View---->Show deleted messages
    5. Find these 'orrible messages and delete them!
    6. Go to trash and make sure there is nothing here.
    7. I went between Inbox, Trash and Sent folders and deleted all I could
    8. Go back to preferences page and re-check the 'send deleted messages to separate folder'
    9. Select hide deleted messages (for future messages).
    10. At this point, they are all gone. Let's see if that's the case when I next log in!
    Hope this helps

2nd :is there a place on the mail pop server for user password.
    3rd: how does this work??
    Thanks for any help.

Sorry I can't be of help, I know of others with this problem. In my case I have two accounts that don't work in Mail whilst the other accounts do. I suspect it may be a bug as I've been looking for a solution for sometime. My current solution is to collect the mail on those accounts with an XP netbook which is probably not very helpful!
I have also tried the Keychain repair and at least for a short while it looked as if it had fixed it.
Any ideas anybody before I go through the hassle of reinstalling everything?

  • Problem Removing Junk Mail from POP Server

Is there a way to automatically remove junk mail from the POP server when I delete the Junk within the Apple Mail application?
The Mail application Junk filter is working pretty well for me on my primary MacBook Pro system. My inbox is mostly junk free and I like that I can check the Junk folder to see if any "good" e-mail got snared before deleting the junk from the junk folder.
However, "Erasing Junk Mail" from the junk mail folder does NOT erase the junk from my POP server. So if I check the same e-mail account on another computer or my Treo, I have endure the same junk messages again which can quickly mount up to 100+ messages over the course of a day.
I can manually delete messages from the POP server by using the Get Info window in the Shortcuts/Actions Menu at the bottom left of the Mail browser.
However, I have to manually identify and select the junk messages from all the mail on the POP server to delete it which is both tedious and time consuming.
Isn't there some way instruct the program to automatically delete Junk from the server when it's deleted from the browser?
It seems like it would be an obvious feature.
I've looked for some way to do this including apple scripts but I can't find a way to do it.
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

    michellzappa,
All of my e-mail providers have some sort of web based access for my accounts. They identify, segregate and prevent any message marked as bounce from being downloaded to my inbox. Is this what you are describing as redundant?
Mail Scripts 2.7.10 by Andreas Amann, provides an excellent compilation of mail scripts.
I would advise that you create a new post with the title. "Can I write an applescript to automatically clean out messages on server every hour?" in the AppleScript Forum.
    ;~)

  • Web based email and Mail

    Hello
I have a web based email account (with Postmaster). I think it is IMAP, POP3 or Exchange based. Is it possible for me to access / download my emails onto my Mac via Mail? And then to send emails from my Postmaster email address via Mail? (This would save me having to be online to view and send emails)
If this is possible how do I set it up?
    Thank you
    Mark

    Hello Mark.
I seriously doubt this email account is an Exchange (Exchange Server) type account which is usually reserved for business/corporate type accounts only.
If Postmaster supports accessing the account as a POP or IMAP type account with an email client such as the Mail.app, the answer is yes but only Postmaster can answer this question and if the answer is yes, you also get the account setup information from Postmaster.
(This would save me having to be online to view and send emails)
Accessing an email account with an email client such as the Mail.app - receiving and sending messages will also require being online or connected to the internet.

When I purchased my computer I installed  office for mac so I susally used outlook with no problems. My original apple id is the same as my pop server based e-mail account.  I had an old me.com account but never used it. When I set up i cloud on my macbook I could not get my email to download to the cloud. My calendars, contacts and everything else works. At one of the Mac stores a salesman told  me I needed to re  route my e-mail to a Google Account, which I did but still no icloud mail. I now have my original pop mail account , the google account ,i cloud and I still can't get i cloud to work with my office for mac outlook.  HELP I want one account that uses the cloud How do I make this happen?

Your pop account won't work with iCloud, it's the alternate me address you get when you create an iCloud account that works with iCloud. Outlook won't work with iCloud either, you need to use Address Book, iCal etc etc.
