Mail preferences, accounts, advanced

I have several gmail accounts and I have duplicate folders of messages that I am unable to simply delete. Even if I delete the hundreds of messages that are stored there, the messages come back. So I'm wondering if this is because of choices that I have made in Preferences. In the options: "Keep copies of mail for offline viewing", "Don't keep copies of any mail", if I choose the latter, I get this dire warning, so I'm not sure what to do. Will this choice also remove copies from the server? Thanks for your help.

Hi, I followed the instructions that Thomas gave to make these folders disappear: opened up my gmail account, went to Settings, Labs and then enabled Advance IMAP Controls. Then I went to Labels and only had options to Hide or Show, not to Remove. And I wasn't sure if the instructions just referred to what I would see on the internet or what I would see in my Mail app.
Is there anything that I should be doing in Mail Preferences, Accounts, to get rid of these folders of seemingly duplicate messages (don't really understand that part about them not really being duplicate, but...). The folders I want to remove are: (specific gmail address), All Mail, Drafts, Sent Mail, Spam, Starred and Trash. If anyone knows how to get rid of those folders I would appreciate your help. Thanks again.

  • Yosemite, Mail-Preference-Accounts- Advanced port 995 problem

I'm using mac air and mac pro. I've got a problem on my mail receiving when upgraded to Yosemite, in my mail preference- Accounts-Advanced, i am trying to change port 995 to 110 but it keeps reverting to 995 when saved. Port 110 is the setting before, pls help?

Any tips on setting up a NEW account with advanced settings?
There seems to be a UX issue with setting up the accounts. Every time I'm setting up my email from my own servers, it passes IMAP with "an error occurred" and then after inputting my SMTP info, it hangs....and hangs....and NOTHING happens. I need to configure my account is setup as IMAP SSL, but it's not detecting it nor is it giving me options to insert this information.
What the crap happened with MAIL?  (Been using Airmail for a while, but gave up on that.)

  • "Locking Down" mail preferences?

To sync the mail on my home mac, my work mac and my iPhone, I run my work, .mac and one other account through gmail imap. I have gmail set up so that if I respond to an email, it uses the incoming address rather than my gmail address.
In my Mail preferences, I have all accounts enabled but only have the gmail imap check marked to check for new mail, so I won't pull down duplicates from the other servers.
Problem is, at random times Mail will undo my preferences and access the accounts I tell it not to.
Is there a way to "lock down" the Mail preferences so it doesn't do this?
    Thanks...
    Zach

when Mail checks for email in all accounts is the mail>preference>account>advanced, is the "include when automatically checking for new mail" checked when before it was unchecked? or is it that Mail overrides and checks anyways, or that you may have inadvertently gone to mailbox>get all mail or synchronize all accounts or the associated shortcut command?
    hope this helps

  • OS X 10.6.5 mail preferences

Is there a way I can configure Mail to leave messages on the server? I find nothing in preferences that can be set that way.

That depends on the type of account.
If you're using IMAP, then the mail is automatically left on the server (that's how IMAP works).
If you're using POP, check Mail -> Preferences -> Accounts -> (your account) -> Advanced and uncheck the 'Remove copy from server after retrieving a message' option (or set it to remove them on a schedule you set to avoid overloading the POP mailbox).

  • Mail email account will not send

I have 3 rr mail accounts, all created at the same time and one will not send emails. It will receive them.
I have deketed the account 3 times and started new ewach time.
Sending emails says the outgoing mailserver is incorrect, selectanother and there are none that will work. All my other rr accounts will receive and send emails and they were all created the same way.
    WHat am I missing?

Perhaps the port is incorrect. Mail menu: Mail>Preferences>Accounts>Account Information. Click on the Outgoing Mail Server drop down and select Edit SMTP Server List. Then select Advanced. Try using Custom Port 25.

  • HT204053 My connection Doctor says its connecting to I-Cloud but the SMTP sending accounts are not merging correctly! What do I change the settings to to merge my mail.me accounts across to this?

    Hello,
Yesterday under sufference I moved across to I-Cloud from my Mobile me accounts.
I had a deadline of 30th June to merge my email accounts or they would of ceased.
In order to remain compatible I also bought the Lion OSX platfrom which was upgraded from Snow Leopard.
I have moved all my .mac and .me accounts across to I-Cloud and the Connection Doctor recognises them to allow email to be downloaded,
but its seems when the SMTP part of the loggin tries to connect its booted off the mail server.
Im know that I have probably not managed to merge across competely to I-Cloud successfully and wondered if any one can please tell me the
setting I need to change under the mail preference account profiles to ensure this will work correctly.
    Thanks
    Denise

Hi Roger, Thanks for your suggestions. Do you think in fact that I could delete the SMTP part of the mailservers. It appears that they are dedundant as it now says it used Icloud only?
    Thanks

  • Setting up a Mail alias-account

    Hi folks,
People can send me mail through various email addresses, but i configured this accounts to automatically forward the mails to my main smtp account.
    Now my question:
How can i configure my Mail.app mailbox to reply this mail by using the correct email address as sender?
Is it possible in Mail.app (version 2.1) to configure account aliases? If yes, how?
    Thank you all.
    Marc

    Marc,
In this situation, I think you only need to add the additional addresses, into the Email Address entry box in Mail Preferences/Accounts/Account Information. You put a comma after the existing address, and add another. Put a comma after the new, one, and you can add still another.

    and
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mail/2.0/en/ml1019.html
You will need to be sure to select the correct one, in each reply or new message. The latter link is also found in Mail Help.
    Does this fulfill your need?

  • Mail preferences not setting right

My password keeps getting rejected by the SMTP server, despite the fact that it is typed in correctly. I think my problem is in account preferences, because where it says "Email Adress" it has my email adress with an extra "@mac.com" after it. I keep trying to change it, and then when I close the preferences window it asks me if I want to save and I click "Save," but then the "Enter Password" box pops up again and - sure enough - my changes in preferences didn't save! How do I fix this?
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

think my problem is in account preferences, because where it says
"Email Adress" it has my email adress with an extra "@mac.com" after it.
Are you able to receive messages?
Although this isn't normal, it shouldn't effect the SMTP server settings which are separate.
Go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts and under the Account Information tab for your .Mac account preferences at the SMTP server selection, select the Server Settings button below for the .Mac SMTP server.
The SMTP server settings should be as follows:
    Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.mac.com
    Server Port: 587
Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL): Can be selected or not selected.
    Authentication: Password
User Name: The portion of your .Mac email address in front of the @ sign only.
Password: The account's password - the same password used to check the incoming mail server for new messages.
Are you also accessing an email account and SMTP server that is provided by your internet service provider (ISP) with the Mail.app?
If so, are you able to send messages with this account and SMTP server?
If yes to both, you can also select/use your ISP's SMTP server to send messages with your .Mac account which is invisible to all recipients.

  • What do I do when Mail preferences will not open for me to edit server list

When my wife tries to send mail a message says server listed doesn't work and asks if I want to edit the server list. When we attempt to do this from the message or from the tool bar, Preferences does not open. BTW It is not grayed out. WHen I log in on the same computer, I can open preferences.

You don't say who your mail server is and what preferences are you trying to access? Just a thought, though, try going to Mail preferences, Accounts and Account Information. Is the "use only this server" box checked? Different mail servers require different settings. Gmail, for instance, requires that box to be unchecked. Good Luck

  • Default preferences account sent from in panther

    Hi
I have recently set up mail with two POP accounts (call them A and B for these purposes). Two separate "sub-inboxes" marked A and B appear under the main mail Inbox. This seems great.
However, when I compose an email, i would like it to go by default from A, however it seems that this is dependent on what account that email that is currently highlighted in the main window was sent to/from i.e. if i am at the level of in box A, it goes from A, if at the level of B then from B - this also applies if i am in the sent box; if I am viewing a mail sent to B and I compose a new mail then it defaults to B.
The help function suggests changing the order of the accounts - this doesn't work even at the main Inbox level if the sub-inbox A is empty or if I am viewing something that is in sub-inbox B
(obviously the sent from account can be changed by changing the drop down box in the new message, but this is irritating and I am bound to forget!)
Any help appreciated - otherwise I may just go back to Entourage.
    Cheers

    Hello David.
Your description is how the Mail.app works prior to Tiger Mail. There is no true default email account preference when selecting New to compose a new message.
Whichever account mailbox is currently selecting in the mailboxes drawer will be the account used when selecting New to compose a new message. If no account mailbox is currently selected, the first account listed in the account's window at Mail > Preferences > Accounts is the default email account.
Tiger Mail includes a true default account selection for "Send new mail from".

  • Send Mail From account

In the send mail window there is a drop down that lets you select what address you want to send it From. This drop down displays my name followed by the email address. Is there any way to change this so it displays a friendly name I create? Something like how when you create a new account in Mail you can give it a description.

you can change the name it displays in mail preferences->accounts. just change the full name there.

  • Two Apple Mail imap accounts, but can never include 2nd account in REPLY ALL

Hi. I have two Apple Mail imap accounts. One for me and one for my boss. The problem is, if I receive an email in which my boss is cc'd and I then click on REPLY ALL, Mail never includes my boss's email address and I have to manually type it in. Is there anything I can do to fix this? Thank you.

Open Mail>Preferences>Accounts, scan down to the entry 'Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)', click on the dropdown and select Edit SMTP Server List and verify that each account has the correct SMTP server set.
    Then close it
Once you have verified that the servers are set correctly check the box that says 'Use only this server' for each of the accounts.

  • Apple Mail alternate accounts

Gmail has an option where you can change what shows on you to email addresses, does Mail have anything like that?
For example, i have a college email address ([email protected]) but it isn't an actual email account, it only fowards to my @gmail.com account and from there i can reply still using @ttu.edu
In Gmail switching from @gmail.com to @ttu.edu is as easy is hitting a dropdown menu; i can't seem to find anything similar in Apple Mail. Can anybody help?
Btw, please do NOT reply with:
    Mail > Preferences > Accounts
    Hit the +
I know how to add another pop account, that's not what I'm asking.
    Thanx

If I understand you correctly, you want to change the address that your mail says it came from. In that case, it may be possible. Quit Mail and do this:
    • Open Terminal
    • Type "defaults read com.apple.mail UserHeaders" and press Return.
If that command returns "The domain/default pair of (com.apple.mail, UserHeaders) does not exist", then:
    • Type "defaults write com.apple.mail UserHeaders {"Return-Path" = "[email protected]";}" and press Return.
If you don't get an error message, then logut of Terminal and quit, then launch Mail and send a test message to yourself. When you get it, look in the full headers for the Return-Path address to verify that it's the one you changed it to; if so, you're set to go.
If you do get an error message, verify that you typed the commands correctly (without the quotes at the outside of each command) and try again if necessary. If you did type it correctly, then Mail will not accept this alteration.
    Hope this helps,
    Mulder

  • Passwords in mail preferences being erased automatically

Why are passwords being automatically erased in Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Incoming mail server which causes pop up screens asking for passwords? This happens multiple times for the same email accounts.

Passwords disappearing from both mail and keychain... odd.
It’s not that the password disappears from both Mail and the keychain. Mail saves your password in the keychain and nowhere else, reads it from there when needed, and apparently also removes the password from the keychain when it thinks is invalid...
I thought Keychain's function was to preserve and protect passwords not erase them.
The purpose of the keychain isn’t to preserve anything, but rather to make certain pieces of information accessible to authorized agents only. There is nothing wrong with allowing the agent that stored something there to remove it later.
The problem has nothing to do with the keychain itself, but rather with the fact that Mail sometimes assumes the password is invalid when that’s not the case.
Is mail 4.0 new for OS X 6.0 (Snow Leopard)??
    Yes.
I could swear I had this problem prior to upgrading to Snow Leopard.
This I don’t know. I do know, however, that it happens in Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard), but didn’t happen in Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger).
