Mail preferences on iMac

I was fiddling with our email settings a few hours ago. (I was actually trying to follow instructions to get a "mail delievered" message and it involved me going into Terminal and typing in code). So since I tried to do all that, it seems that I can no longer send emails from the iMac. I can still receive emails and I can send and receive, using the same address from my iPad mini.  I assume I have unwittingly changed our outgoing mail server information. What should it say? our mail provider is iCloud.
In account information in Outgoing Mail Server it now says "iCloud". The server name is "smtp.mail.me.com"  When I first noticed this problem a few hours ago the Outgoing Mail Server said "none" so I've added this in. Not correctly??
Could someone please help me be able to email again! I'm on Mac OS X version 10.6.8

That's the correct server. I would recommend deleting the account from Mail and setting it up from scatch following the instructions here:
Entering iCloud email settings manually in Snow Leopard or Leopard

Go to Mail Preferences>Accounts, click the '+' button below the list of accounts and insert the settings, username and password as instructed. Some account types can be set up automatically as soon as Mail knows the emails address (because the server settings are built in), in other cases you will have to get them from your ISP.

  • Two mail users, one iMac

My wife and I are different users on the iMac. We each have a seperate .Mac account. When my wife opens mail from her user profile (for lack of a better term) she can send and receive just fine. The problem is that she is also downloading my email.
When I go into mail>preferences>account I see the two account. My shows up as [email protected] while my wife's shows up was wife without the @mac.com at the end. The second box down says "email address" for her set up but it will not allow me to type anything in there.
What is the issue, and how do I fix it.
    Thanks

Guinness, your post requires close reading and I may not see exactly what you mean.
From your 1st sentence, I assume your wife has 2 accounts set up in her Mail Preferences. If yes, delete your account from there. It probably got there when you first set up the new user for your wife and introduced your .Mac ID there. It will then automatically set up a .Mac email account for you there.
The field for description can be anything to let you identify that mail easily and could also be a full email address but this is nt necessary, the next field
must have the full email address.

  • How to Copy Mail Settings from iMac to my PowerBook

I use primarily my iMac to check and reply through my emails. And when i travel i bring with me my PowerBook. I would like to have the same preferences, settings, smart folders on my PowerBook too? But I can't seem to figure it out. I don't have a .Mac account. Is there a way around this? What files should i copy from my iMac to my Powerbook and how. Thank you so much in advance for those who will reply.

There is no need to copy over the Downloads folder. All attachments are part of the files within each mailbox and thus within the Mail folder. The only use for the Downloads folder is when you must open an attachment, in the Mail window with another Application (such as Word). This was introduced in the latest version of Mail to provide a temporary folder for those so opened, so if you wish to revise and return, you don't have to separately save to your permanent folders. However, when you Save the attachment from the message, it does not enter the Downloads folder.
You can control when they are erased from the Downloads folder in Mail Preferences/General, and again erasing any from the Downloads folder is of no consequence, unless you edited one, and that is the only place the edited version exists.

  • .Mac Aliases in Mail Preferences?

On my Powerbook, it is not showing my .Mac aliases, and there is no button in the Mail preferences that allows me to show .Mac aliases. I'm baffled as to why this is. On my work Mac (an 2005 iMac (don't have specifics here at home)), there is a button in the preferences that allowed me to include the aliases in the Account pulldown menu when composing a message. I synch between the two computers using .mac as well, but my home computer is my primary computer.
Any ideas as to why this is working on one computer and not the other? Is my version of "Mail" just old? If so, how can I download a newer version?

I just found that on my home Powerbook, the .mac account is set to be a POP instead of a .Mac. I disabled the account and created a new one with the same settings except making it the correct kind of account, and the aliases now work.

I cannot log on to my Comcast e-mail from my IMac anymore.  This is a new issue, recently I had to delete cookies from my system in order so my email wasn’t frozen, but over the past few days it has went from bad to worse.  I am able to enter my login information, but it just goes right back to the home page.  Any suggestions…maybe I deleted something else in the process.

OK, restart in Safe Mode, this will clear some caches. It's possible one or more is corrupt. To restart in Safe Mode when you hear the start up tone hold down the Shift Key until you see a progress bar. Let it fully boot then restart normally and test.
Also I am assuming you have checked Finder - Preferences  - General and see what boxes are checked in "Show these items on desktop." You can also mount an item in Disk Utility, simply highlight it and then look in the File menu for Mount.....

    Back up all data.
Select all your mailboxes, and then select
    Mailbox ▹ Export Mailbox...
from the Mail menu bar. Export the mailboxes to the Desktop folder.
Make a note of the settings for all your Mail accounts – everything you'd need to reconstruct the settings from scratch.
    Quit Mail. Then select
     ▹ Force Quit...
from the menu bar. A small window will open with a list of running applications. Mail may appear in that list, even though you quit it. If so, select it and press return. Close the window.
In the Finder, hold down the option key and select
    Go ▹ Library
from the menu bar. Move the following items from the folder that opens to the Trash (some may not exist):
    Caches/com.apple.mail
    Saved Application State/com.apple.mail.savedState
Leave the Finder window open for now.
Relaunch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, you’re done. Delete the exported mailboxes. Otherwise, quit Mail and move these items, if they exist, from the open Library folder to the Desktop:
    Application Support/AddressBook/MailRecents-v4.abcdmr
    Containers/com.apple.mail
    Mail
    Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist (OS X 10.7 only)
    Preferences/com.apple.mail.searchhistory.plist (OS X 10.7 only)
Note: you are not moving the Mail application. You’re moving a folder named “Mail.”
Log out and log back in. Launch Mail. It will behave as if you were setting it up for the first time. Go through the setup process with one of your accounts, using the information you noted earlier. Test. Same problem?
If there’s no improvement, quit Mail again and put back the items you moved to the Desktop, replacing any newer ones that may have been created in their place. You don’t need to replace the items you moved to the Trash.
If the issue is resolved, recreate the rest of your Mail settings, then import the mailboxes you exported:
    File ▹ Import Mailbox...
After importing, test. If Mail is still working, delete the items on the Desktop and close the Finder window.

What email service do you use and is the account set up as IMAP or POP? Check that the configuration on your Air are the same as that on your iMac:

  • Mail Preferences not remembered...

My mail preferences are not being remembered when mail is reopened, even the email default to send from is not remembered, all folders with in Mail when opened are collapsed & no signatures are in place.
Brand new iMac, mail was imported from Macbook Pro with no issues 2 weeks ago. Mail was freezing on start up so I followed a thread on here:
Library/containers/com.apple.mail & delete the named folder, which did resolve the freezing on start up, now no preferences are remembered by mail.
    Any help would be fantastic...
    Thanks in advance

Is there any chance anyone can help, this issue is becoming rather annoying especially as this iMac is less than a month old!
    Thanks in advance!

  • After installing Mavericks, why can I no longer delete junk mail on my iMAC Mail program?

After installing Mavericks, why can I no longer delete junk mail on my iMAC Mail program?   Also, mail is sometimes slow to load in mornings on my iMac after it has appeared on my iPhone.  I temporarily solved that by shutting down and reopening mail two or three times.

I have the same problem on my iMac.  Most of what it puts in the "junk folder" is junk.  I delete all of the messages in the folder and they're back the next time I check it.  I have messages in that folder that have were received 2 months ago!  I'm thinking of unchecking "junk folder" in preferences.  Very frustrating.

  • Error Saving Preferences on exiting Mail Preferences

Hi, I am getting the Error Saving Preferences error on exiting Mail Preferences with advice to check disk space and directory permissions on ~/Library/Preferences. Not knowing what the official permissions should be I booted the iMac from the Leopard installation disk and in Disk Utility I repaired file permissions but this did not make any difference. I have followed other instructions I found in Apple Discussions which were for a previous OSX where I backed up the Mail directory and then moved ~/System/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist to the Desktop. Per instructions I then fired up Mail which picked up my Mac account straight away but again on exiting Preferences without even adding any new mailboxes the same error cropped up... in fact I don't think a new plist was created. I returned the old plist and Mail directory.
It may be worth mentioning that just before this problem cropped up I had been trouble-shooting another problem where every minute my active window would lose focus, I tracked this down to HP_scheduler (I have an HP all-in-one printer, C6180) and on killing the process the problem went away, but I think it was also a symptom of the real cause which is still unknown as the printer software has been installed for about a year, last update was months ago... but before I had tracked the issue down to this I had use MacScan2 to flush just my Safari caches and temporary files etc, it was running in authenticated mode, may mean something, may not. Subsequently to discovering HP Scheduler was to blame I uninstalled all the printer software using the HP uninstall package.
Around this time a third problem transpired where settings were not being retained in various System Preferences. Unfortunately I didn't pick up on it straight away as being a third problem and now can't remember whether it started before the window lost focus problem or not. The first time it happened was when I tried to put MacScan2 into the startup list for my login, it could be added but on checking the addition it wasn't retained in the list and well I thought nothing more of it as it was the first time I had tried to do such a thing. Then I noticed the Mail issue just by chance and subsequently, through seeing someone else's problems logged back in 2006 I think, I noticed that although I could change screensaver I could not make a change in desktop photo stick.
I have since reinstalled the printer software and I am no longer losing focus from the active window.
However, I think it is probably the case that the Mail Preferences, Startup Items and Desktop Preferences issues are all the symptoms of one and the same problem and I would be very grateful if anyone is familiar with and/or knows of a solution to this issue.
    Many thanks for reading!

Well, in the end I tried many things including lots of things that I thought wouldn't help such as cleaning out caches, running crons; I was using IceClean and pretty much tried every system maintenance option but to no avail. I have removed MacScan and have kept Norton, which this time found a few things in my .wine folder, but I have only performed a few full system scans as it takes a full day.
This resulted in the knowledge that I would have to do a Leopard reinstall if that failed then a complete restore from TimeMachine which I knew would take ages, but fortunately the reinstall worked perfectly and effortlessly to solve the problem, and it only took 30 mins to update the security patches including 2 automatic restarts.
    Phew!

  • Receiving mail on my iMac

    Hello,
In the last 2 days I cannot retrieve messages from my Mail.
    I can, however, send.
Could i have changed the settings in error?
I have tried emptying all recovered messages, sent messages and deleted messages..to no avail.
    Any ideas?
I will have to read them on my iphone instead
    thanks,
    Peter

Thought I'd add to this topic since I just solved the same problem - no incoming mail on my iMac, just outgoing.
First, I ran the Window > Connection Doctor and it showed my login failed.
Next, I went to Mail > Preferences > General > Advanced
Changed the default "Authentication" setting from Authenticated POP (APOP) to Password, and now all is well. The Connection Doctor steered me to the authentication setting, since it said my login failed.

There's an Apple help page on the DNS problem - at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3408
The first thing to try is changing your DNS settings - and for that you need to open System Preferences, then the
    Network section.
In Network - click  on Advanced - then the DNS tab
under DNS servers - use the + button to enter two extra lines
    either these, from google dns
    8.8.8.8
    8.8.4.4
    or from OpenDNS
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
then click OK & then 'Apply'
You would need to do that seperately for the Cable (Ethernet) settings and Wireless (Airport)
