Mail preferences - or something - have changed

I'm sure I've not changed anything but:
The column view has changed - I had it so that the first column for
my inbox was the sender, and in my drafts it was the intended
recipients. Now they are all sender [so I have no idea who drafts are
going to!]. Or, if change it in the drafts window it changes all the
others, and they make no sense.
Odder still, my drafts are no longer drafts, in that they behave as
if they have been sent in that they can't be altered. To finish one
off I have to use send again, and then to delete the original.
Is this not odd?
Cheers, Colin

I cannot find any place called "Mail Preferences".  I have tried looking under both "Mail" and "System Preferences" and there is nothing there entitled "Mail Preferences". Under "Preferences" there is no subheading as described in the iCloud instructions.  Where is that "Mail Preferences" button located?

Open Mail, go to the 'Mail' menu, select Preferences.

I have a computer with itunes on it.  Worked fine until i tried to switch users and have the music shared, that feature used to work great.  Doesn't share, although sharing is turned on, and works well except if you wanna change preferences it freezes.  Upon closing there are up to 7 distinct hangtime codes.  Apple doesnt recognize these codes - and have not replied to other questions concerning similar problems.  Any help or ideas would be welcome.  Removing my library or preferences did nothing, so I am reinstalling all this crap.  Please help!  I just want to be able to see my preferences.

  • IPhone suddenly deleting mail!! I have changed no settings. Doing this on both gmail and gmx..why?

I have had my iphone for about two months and suddenly, yesterday, I noticed that several e-mails were deleted that I DID NOT delete.  I changed NO settings from when I originally set up the accounts.  This is happening with both my gmail and my gmx account.
I went to try to retrieve these e-mails off the server, these too, were deleted.  In fact, everything in my inbox was wiped out.
I know for a fact that my account has not been hacked...but I do not understand why my mail is disappeared.
There was some very, very important e-mails that got deleted and I have no idea of how this happened all the sudden.
    Any help is appreciated!!

i just recently am having the same problems.....had my iPhone for over a year and never experienced it before. Interesting that others are reporting same problem!

    Sabine,
What you report would be fully consistent with accessing your .mac account with a computer or mail client where the .mac account is setup as POP account.
With a .mac or IMAP account, if you happen to access the account from a computer or mail client that defaults to treat the account as POP, then often the further default is to download the messages, and further instruct the server to remove them. In other words, the IMAP or .mac account gets treated as a POP, and the messages are removed following download. It would make no difference how you had the setting on your primary computer, or primary mail client (Mail) -- the settings for server behavior are in each mail client, whether aboard more than one computer or not -- and would also be true of POP account selection of actions following initial download.
Remember, a .mac account acts like an IMAP account, and Inbox, is on the server, but the server will respond to being approached as though it is POP. The Dell would not have had an option to set the account type as .mac, so the proper choice would have been IMAP.

  • Error message when changing Mail preferences

Whenever I change anything in the Preferences of Mail 2.0.8 even just opening the preferences and then closing them, I get an error message that says "Error Saving Preferences" " Writing your preferences to disk has failed. Your preferences may not have been saved. The permissions on ~/Library/Preferences may be wrong or your disk may be full." However, the change seems to have been made anyway as the expected new behavior occurs. The disk isn't full (haven't had it long enough!) and I don't know what to do about the preferences.
Is there anything I can do to find out what might be wrong BEFORE something horrible happens? Tomorrow is back up day. Should I change anything before I do it?

This particular issue is still a mystery to me. In the rare cases when I've seen it reported, none of the suggestions that one would expect should work did.
Open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal and type the following commands -- you can copy them here, one at a time, and paste them in Terminal to avoid having to manually type them:
    ls -ld ~/Library/Preferences
    ls -l ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
    What do they say?
If you want to try re-creating the preferences file, be sure to do it properly, i.e.:
    1. Quit Mail.
    2. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is stored.
    3. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences/. Locate the com.apple.mail.plist file and move it to the Desktop (to be deleted if this fixes the problem).
You'll have to set up your non-Mac accounts from scratch all over again. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don't. Just enter the account information and Mail will automagically rediscover the data in ~/Library/Mail/ when done.
You'll also have to re-configure most of your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it's enabled.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the file path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the file path there.

  • HT1146 I have a NEW e-mail provider. I must CHANGE this on my Apple & iTunes account - need HELP !

I haved moved after 38 years in the same place.
I have changed e-mail addresses and cannot seem to get Apple to leave my OLD address alone. In trying to fix this, I have changed my password several times, and am now having a really bad time even getting into my iTunes account etc.  Need some help here.
    Thanks, Brian

I'm assuming OS X here based on the choice of forum, and not iOS based on the footer.
Please do not repeatedly change passwords or repeatedly fail passwords logins, or you'll risk triggering the evasion processing.
I'd expect Apple to send a confirming email message to the old email address when you manage your AppleID data over to the new email address, but the selection should otherwise remain.  The mail message sent to the old address is intended to notify the user, should the account have been highjacked.
The email address is not tied to the AppleID password.  Other than you'll need the password to log in and change the saved email address.
You'll have various prompts for passwords around Safari and iTunes that might remember the old OS X settings via your local Keychain, and you'll be changing those as you log in.  (That's your local system applying defaults, and not anything at Apple.)  You can either change those as you log in, or you can open Keychain Access and (carefully!) find and remove the old entries.  (I'd strongly encourage making a backup of your keychain or of your system before deleting old Keychain entries.)
If something else is going on and you've verified the email settings are correct on your account, then you'll probably want to contact the folks at Apple directly.

  • How do I get rid of Bing and adware on my macbook? I have changed the preferences on Safari to google, and tried to download an adware remover, but things are now worse!

Hi can anyone help me to get rid of Bing and all sorts of Adware on my macbook which arrive everytime I use Safari? I have changed the Safari preferences but Bing won't go away, and worse, it comes up with adverts. I also seem to be losing things I do want - like VLC player-  its creepy

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
If Safari crashes on launch and you don't have another web browser, you should be able to launch Safari by starting up in safe mode.
You may have installed the "Genieo" or "InstallMac" ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it.
Back up all data before making any changes.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those.
After removing the malware, remember to reset your home page in all the web browsers affected, if it was changed.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, then you may have one of the other kinds of adware covered by the support article. Follow the rest of the instructions in the article.
If you find Apple's instructions too hard to follow, ask for an alternative that doesn't require you to trust a black-box application without knowing what it does.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. Chances are you got it from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
    or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
    if it's not already checked.

  • System Preference Icons have changed

The Speech and Startup disc Icons in my system preferences pane have changed to something like a switch.

Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu and enter ~/Library/Caches/ as the folder's path. Once this folder has appeared, locate the com.apple.preferencepanes.cache item and drag it to the desktop. Open System Preferences again. Mac OS X 10.4 does not create or use any items starting with LS or .LS in the ~/Library/Preferences/ folder.

  • Sick of email updates changed mail preferences

I'm constantly getting update emails whenever anyone responds to any thread I've participated in I've tried changing all settings to 'no' under e-mail preferences how do you stop emails except marking them as spam in my client?

To stop your emails you need to do two things.  First, go to Your Stuff - Profile- Manage Email Notifications (in the upper right hand Actions box) - either check individual threads to remove or click in the top box which will check all the threads and then click on Remove Email Notifications.
Second, also in Your Stuff but go to Preferences this time and then Email Notification Preferences.  Check no for each of the notifications you want stopped.
That should stop all the emails from ASC.
You might also make sure that you haven't subscribed to one of the communities by mistake.  To do that you have to go to the actions box in the top right corner of the sidebar and turn off those notifications as well.  That is the one that is most missed by people.

  • Mail preferences not sticking and sometimes change on their own.

Maybe somebody else has seen this odd behavior. Here's the scoop:
I clean installed 10.5.1 yesterday on my Mac Mini(1.42GHz G4, 1GB RAM)and after setting up my admin account, I immediately grabbed the 10.5.2 through Software Update. This is my first taste of Leopard and so far so good.
Now that everything is updated, I started to configure Mail. I set up two IMAP accounts in Mail and specified certain preferences under Mailbox Behaviors. I unchecked all the boxes that had to do with storing things on the servers. Since my IMAP account quotas are fairly small, ~150MB, I don't want Mail storing anything on my company's servers. Saved the changes and started logging in to my accounts. Tested it out by sending a few messages and noticed my sent messages and deleted messages were being saved on the server. Back in to Mail preferences I go and I noticed that some of the check boxes under Mailbox Behaviors had checkmarks back in them. What gives? I didn't leave those boxes checked. Why had several of the checkmarks reappeared?
Anyways, I've toyed with this thing for hours. It's seems to be a random problem and I don't have any clue why it happens. I've even deleted my own com.apple.mail.plst file and Mail folder multiple times to start over from scratch. I always uncheck the "store xxx on the server" boxes, but occasionally Mail turns them back on. It's happened multiple times now, so I'm getting a little paranoid about it. The last time it happened, I found the "Store draft messages on the server" re-checked under one of the IMAP accounts.
Seems like Mail.app has a mind of its own. Any idea how to put a stop to it?

I've done some more testing and found out several things.
    1. It doesn't matter which of my IMAP accounts I configure Mail to access. I can reset Mail (by deleting my ~/Library/Mail folder and com.apple.mail.plist file) and then reconfigure my preferences for each IMAP sever. The problem still persists.
    2. It definitely is a 10.5.2 problem. I erased the HD and reinstalled 10.5.1 from DVD onto my PowerBook G4 and then ran Mail. Configured it to access my IMAP accounts and had not problems with it. It didn't reset my "Mailbox Behaviors" preferences at all. In fact, it worked the way it's supposed to. On to step 3.
    3. I then installed the 10.5.2 combo updater(dl'ed from Apple's support website) and ran Mail. With the previous accounts still configured, it didn't mess with my "Mailbox Behaviors" at all, but when I reset Mail (by dumping my Mail folder and prefs into the trash) and reconfigured it for my IMAP accounts, the problem came back.
    4. With a fresh reset of my Mail preferences in 10.5.2, the very first email I send cannot be found in any folder until I quit out of Mail and then come back in. Checking my "Mailbox Behavior" prefs, I see that Mail has decided to put the check mark back in the "Store Sent Messages on the Server". That's not the way I set it up in the begining. This weird behviors repeats itself on the first draft message I save and the first email message I delete out of my Inbox. Mail always causes the first draft and deleted message to disappear until I quit and come back in. The "Mailbox Bevaior" prefs also get reset for storing drafts and deleted messages on the server.
So there we have it. Many hours spent on this thing. If others want to try it out in 10.5.2, just move your Mail folder and plst file out of your home folder temporarily and re-run Mail. Put your settings in, uncheck a few boxes under "Mailbox Behaviors" and see if Mail starts messing up.
I guess I'll be waiting for this problem to be resolved in 10.5.3. Until then, its back to 10.5.1 for me.

My I phone is leaking E-mail passwords and 3parties are accessing the E-mails! I have changed passwords 3 times in 8days!! As soon as I upload the E-Mail account to the I-Phone, everything starts all over again, What do I do?
The last Aplication I downloaded was Yahoo Finance (a new version) with Yahoo.es .....after a couple days it is asking me to change my E-mails to yahoo.es...and will permit me to upload me e-mails to the I-Phone.... I do not know if this helps..

I really doubt it if this is a security issue with iPhone, more like you may have answered one to many questions during an apps setup. Or just a coincidence. Most of the time, it has something to do with some site you were on or with a laptop or desktop web page, but not the iPhone.

  • Can your Mail Preferences change without your knowledge?

Recently I noticed that my sent messages were gone, all but about 4 weeks or so.  I checked account preferences on my MacBook Pro (fully updated to Mavericks) and it had "Delete Sent Messages From Server" set to "Never".  My other iMac also set to the same setting.  2 iOS devices syncing to the account.
It continued to happen.  I called Apple.  They remotely rebuilt my email.  Still did not repopulate Sent folder but did repopulat Inbox.
I called a week later (today) and went back to look at MacBook Pro mail preference settings on the accont and it had been changed from "Never" to "After One Month" (??!!??)
I didn't make this change, nor anyone in my house.  Could this have changed in some way without my knowledge? I can't get my emails back (thanks Apple!!) but I don't want it to randomly happen again.  They insist I am crazy and the only way it would have changed is if I, after a decade with the same preferences, went in specifically to change it.
Is this possible?  Or am I truly losing my mind???
    anyone?
    Thanks Caroline

        Ken2024,
I can understand your concern. I want to make sure that everything is okay with the account. To get the unlimited removed from the account normally a person would have to request a plan change, upgrade a device on the account, or if you had to activate a basic phone on the line for a period of time. I can always review the account for you in full detail if you would like. I have sent you a Direct Message. Please respond back to that direct message and we can get account specifics. I hope to hear from you soon.

  • Preferences icons have changed

Both my System and Home preferences icons have changed to that of a text editor which I recently downloaded but have not yet used. I was trouble-shooting an issue in which my desktop sounds were not happening; i.e., the Trash emptying made no sound, I had no start-up chimes and no sound of dragging and dropping a file. I have still not resolved that issue. Any answers would be welcome. But, the strangest thing is the fact that all my Preference files have this Smultron icon. I had simply put my Preference folder on the Desktop and then rebooted to see if the Desktop sounds would return. When they didn't, I replaced the Preferences folder and found that all my Preference files had this icon. The icon also shows on my System Preferences which I did not touch or move in this process. Any clues?

I am having the same problem but with an icon from a different editor, BBEdit. Both my System and Home preference icons have changed. I first noticed a problem when I returned to my computer, from which I had not logged out, after stepping away from it for a while. My mail looked funny; the font for the mailboxes had changed and the header type was not formatted in the usual fashion. I logged in as the admin and checked its preferences. All the preference icons for both the admin account and the system are as they should be, while logged in as admin. That makes me think it is a problem with my user account only. I went to the Cache folder in the Library in my user account and dumped the "com.apple.preferencepanes.cache" file (as someone had suggested in another, earlier discussion thread.) It straightened out my mail but did not help my preference icons. Feedback; suggestions; answers?
