Back up all data.
Select all your mailboxes, and then select
Mailbox ▹ Export Mailbox...
from the Mail menu bar. Export the mailboxes to the Desktop folder.
Make a note of the settings for all your Mail accounts – everything you'd need to reconstruct the settings from scratch.
Quit Mail. Then select
 ▹ Force Quit...
from the menu bar. A small window will open with a list of running applications. Mail may appear in that list, even though you quit it. If so, select it and press return. Close the window.
In the Finder, hold down the option key and select
Go ▹ Library
from the menu bar. Move the following items from the folder that opens to the Trash (some may not exist):
Caches/com.apple.mail
Saved Application State/com.apple.mail.savedState
Leave the Finder window open for now.
Relaunch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, you’re done. Delete the exported mailboxes. Otherwise, quit Mail and move these items, if they exist, from the open Library folder to the Desktop:
Application Support/AddressBook/MailRecents-v4.abcdmr
Containers/com.apple.mail
Mail
Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist (OS X 10.7 only)
Preferences/com.apple.mail.searchhistory.plist (OS X 10.7 only)
Note: you are not moving the Mail application. You’re moving a folder named “Mail.”
Log out and log back in. Launch Mail. It will behave as if you were setting it up for the first time. Go through the setup process with one of your accounts, using the information you noted earlier. Test. Same problem?
If there’s no improvement, quit Mail again and put back the items you moved to the Desktop, replacing any newer ones that may have been created in their place. You don’t need to replace the items you moved to the Trash.
If the issue is resolved, recreate the rest of your Mail settings, then import the mailboxes you exported:
File ▹ Import Mailbox...
After importing, test. If Mail is still working, delete the items on the Desktop and close the Finder window.

A possible cause is security software (firewall,anti-virus) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

  • Wlan authentication and DHCP process takes about 120 seconds

I have an SSID implemented to terminate on an anchor controller. Authentication takes place outside of the CAPWAP tunnel and the foreign controller authenticates the users with the AAA server directly. This authentication takes about 90-120 seconds and I do not see any problems as far as configuration is considered. This authentication traffic goes through 2 firewalls.
Any ideas on where the problem could be? I use the same AAA server for other SSID authentication and so the problem is not related to the AAA server.

My response is meant more to Apple in general and is certainly not aimed at you Lennart ;-) I wouldn't want to shoot the messenger!!!
If this were an unusual or isolated event, then perhaps re-installing the OS might be considered a solution, but until we determine why and how this is happening to so many systems, this is only a workaround that offers no guarantee that we won't end up right back here at any time. I'm sorry, but an OS reinstall to repair a widespread issue with an errant system level process that is making systems practically unusable is only a band-aid and not a final solution! (not that I won't do it myself ;-), but Apple needs to address the issue and not ask us to re-install the OS that caused/experienced the issue in the first place. Address the root cause not a symptom! Even though they make it fairly simple, an OS re-install is not something I accept as a trivial process to be used when one process is acting up.)
Thanks Lennart for at least an immediate answer to make (i hope) both of my MacBooks usable again!

  • E-mail app automatically closes within seconds of opening.  How do I fix?

I use a 16 MB 3Gs iPhone. I have not upgraded to v4. Since my last e-mail fetch (I am on a manually push) of last night, my e-mail app closes on its own within seconds of opening. I cannot get it to stay open long enough to even delete any of the items out. I have a total of 7 mail messages in my Inbox (2 old and 5 new). No message has an attachment of significant size. I think it has been a couple of weeks since I purged the deleted items folder. I average 30 - 50 messages a day.
I have encountered a similar experience with Facebook app, but found that once a large post on LiveNews migrated to the Older Posts section FB would behave normally.
Any suggestions on how to fix this?

I have this same problem and have not found a fix-around. Does anyone have an idea? THANK YOU

  • My mail program takes a long time to open and the whole system takes almost 2 minutes to shut down at night What should I do?

Hi, Recently my system has been slow to boot up in the morning & slower still to shut down at night.
Also my mail program is slow to open. I do have emails archived but my trash is always deleted & I'm trying to keep my "sent" folder not too full
Occasionally any programs I'm working in (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, etc) takes time to process whatever task I'm doing. (This happens maybe once or twice a week, not often)

Yes it is.  Thank you very much.  You appear to have adaquate hard drive space available.  Now try the following....
Disconnect all peripherals from your computer.
Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
    Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2963 and restart your computer.

  • Sometimes an e-mail will take a long time to open

Not all my e-mails open immediately. Some of them take a long time and I have to keep going back to them or wait until the next day.
All my e-mails don't do this. Just some.

I use ccleaner on a regular basis.
That may be one of your problems - apps that claim to 'clean your Mac' usually do more harm than good.
If I were you, I would try a 'fresh' installation of OS X. Simply boot into your Recovery partition (holding down the Command and R keys whilst booting), use Disk Utility to verify and repair Permissions and the use it to verify your hard drive and then install OS X anew. If you don't erase your hard drive, none of your data will be deleted (although it's always best to have a backup, of course).
If the fresh install doesn't 'fix' things, I would just start all over again - erasing your drive and reinstalling everything.
And stay away frorm CCCleaner, etc.

  • All Pixi apps take 4-5 seconds to open. Even the phone....

I switched from an Iphone to a Palm Pixi because ATT rapes your monthly charges.  I am pretty happy with my sprint service, however the palm pixi is the slowest phone I have ever owned.  I had the OG Iphone and the 3G iphone.  I played with the Palm Pre however I did not like the form factor of it.  So I went with the Pixi.  As I have been using it, it is very slow, and the battery will last half a day if a make a few phone calls, and I might be able to last 24hours if I only make 2-3 short(less than 20min) phone calls.
So the first issue is how to make this OS faster.  Simple stuff like the Phone controls should be the fastest thing on this device.  First and foremost it is a phone, so make it work that way.  I cannot believe that when I push someones contact info I have to wait 5 seconds for the phone app to load up.
Next, a lot of the time the unlock screen will not see that I have put my finger on the lock and started to slide it.  I have to hold my finger there for 1 second and then I can move it.
So those are the OS level things that really need some work.
Post relates to: Pixi p120eww (Sprint)
Message Edited by Anachronistic on 01-28-2010 10:20 AM

I have updated my profile to reflect the correct Pixi and correct network.  Now back to the issues.  This is a brand new phone, I have a Gmail and a Corp Exchange account on the phone.  I have not installed any apps, I did put a new ring tone on the phone.  I also have all my Exchange contacts in the phone.
So as I was playing with the phone it seems that the OS should have default apps that will always stay running as background threads, which should be Phone, Contacts, SMS, and maybe email.  It seems that you can leave these running as CARDS, however I prefer to just remove them when done.

  • Mail sometimes takes a very, very long time to open messages

This is similar to some other messages I've seen here, but I perhaps have some new observations.
Often, but not always, Mail takes up to 120 seconds to open each message in my Inbox. This happens with messages that have already been downloaded from the server, and even with messages that have already been read previously. While opening a message, Mail is otherwise unresponsive and spinning the ol' beachball cursor.
When this happens, the system.log on the Console displays these lines. Mail is process 4502 in this example.
    Jan 19 08:20:23: --- last message repeated 1 time ---
Jan 19 08:20:23 Juliette /usr/sbin/spindump[4552]: process 4502 is being monitored
    Jan 19 08:20:28 Juliette kernel[0]: disk0s2: I/O error.
    Jan 19 08:20:28 Juliette kernel[0]:
    Jan 19 08:20:37: --- last message repeated 1 time ---
    Jan 19 08:20:37 Juliette kernel[0]: disk0s2: I/O error.
    Jan 19 08:20:37 Juliette kernel[0]:
The last three lines are then repeated every 10 seconds until the message is finally displayed at which time spindump reports that it spindump is no longer monitoring process 4502 (or whatever number Mail happens to be). The time required to sort itself out is variable, from 30 to 120 seconds.
I ran Verify on my disk and there were no errors of any kind. I have also checked and corrected permissions on the disk a couple of times.
If I run Mail>Mailbox>Rebuild the problem is cleared up (for a while), but eventually returns. The problem is cleared up only on the Inbox on which I ran Rebuild. There may be a global rebuild somewhere, but I haven't found it.
I have also noticed that after running Rebuild when the problem is occurring, a mailbox will contain one more unopened message than it did before Rebuild-ing, i.e. If there were no unopened messages, there will now be 1, or if there were 6 unopened messages, there will now be 7. And the new unopened message is at some seemingly random place in the message list. I can't say that this happens every time, but I have not seen it not happen.
I'm not really qualified to make a diagnosis of this, but, nevertheless, I will venture a guess that my local mail database is somehow getting corrupted, or possibly is permanently corrupted, in some minor way. Assuming that might be true, is there a way to rebuild my entire mail database? It's fairly large, about 600 Mbytes.
Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

Update: I found out how to re-index my mail database (in the Mail Help, duh) and this may have fixed the problem. At least I haven't seen it since. I'll post a final report at the end of the day.

  • Opening files from a Novell-Share takes about ten seconds

    Hi there,
first a few information about our environment:
Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 Clients with Novell Client installed in latest version
    Windows Server 2008 R2 DCs
    Network-shares based on Novell Netware
When accessing files on Novell-Shares for the first time it takes about 10 seconds to open. Reopening it or any other file at this location again is totally fast. Waiting about 15 minutes after closing the file causes the lag again.
We traced our client-side network traffic and saw many Netbios-queries which failed because our WINS-Servers do not know the Netware-Servers. So first it tried it using every WINS-Server (three in our env.) and then on broadcast in the local subnet three
times. It got no answer and timed out.
So the next step I tried was to disable Netbios-over-TCP/IP with the radio buttons in the Network Adapter settings. After a reboot, the problem reoccured, but there were no more Netbios queries in the trace.
After days of searching for a solution I tried to stop the "TCP/IP-Netbios-Helper"-Windows Service on spec. And suddenly every network share access was totally fast. We tried this with other clients, too. Same behavior! We even did not disable
the NetBios-over-TCP/IP setting. Stopping the service was all we needed to do.
Unfortunately disabling the service causes problems. The Windows-Login fails with a message "No Logon servers available". Using the full qualified user name ("[email protected]") works. But then we saw that policies were not applied.
Any ideas, what could cause the lag? Or is it possible to disable this service without any side-effects?
    Bye,
    Jürgen

    Hi,
What is the result if we access files on other network shares?
I found a thread in novell forum and suggestion is checking the provider order and put Netware first, open network and sharing center, change adapter settings, Select Advanced on the menu> Advanced settings, Click on Provide Order Tab and change order.
And have you contact the novel support team? They're more familiar with this product.

  • Windows network drive taking nearly 30 seconds to open

    Hi all,
I have a batch of windows 7 professional machines that are authenticating to an LDAP server and after that mounting %APPDATA% and some other folders on startup (using SAMBA linux server). They show the content properly but when I go to Computer and I try
to open the same share that is used to mount those remote folders on boot it takes almost 30 seconds to open. And it is not happening only the first time that I open the drive.
I am sure that it is not related with the network speed, 1Gb ethernet over CISCO network.
I would appreciate if anyone can give me a hand.
    Regards.

    Hi samaruc,
This issue might be caused by Windows Explorer tries to obtain detailed information about the remote share and about the file that you are opening. This operation may take a long time over a slow connection.
This behavior is documented in the article below:
Slow network performance when you open a file that is located in a shared folder on a remote network computer
Please check if the method mentioned in that KB would help here.
    Best regards

  • Opening a new mail window takes 5 seconds to appear

When I click New Mail it takes 4 seconds to appear for this Window. This is already for many months. I have a .Mac account and three other POP accounts and a fresh other user doesn't have this problem. I might trash some prefs, but I don't want to organize my whole E-mail again. Somebody some clue what to do?

Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network > Show: Network Port Configurations. Make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet is at the top of the list. Also, disable any communications/networking configuration enabled, but not in use. Since you don't experience the problem when logged in as another user, this probably won't solve it, but it's worth looking at anyway.
Now, in Mail go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Mailbox Behaviors for your .Mac account. Do you have Store draft messages on the server enabled? If so, disable it and see whether it makes a difference.

  • I want to set up an email alias but I keep being told I need to access "preferences" in mail. I don't seem to have that open when I go into mail it takes me straight to my inbox.  Thanks for any help.

Hi. I am new to using an iPad. I have set up an icloud email address for use by all the family.. I want to set up my own as my pop email does not seem to work well on this apple platform. I have tried to self help but I'm being asked to access the icloud mail preferences. I can't seem to do that. When I go into my mail app it takes me straight to my in box. I can't find a way of accessing preferences. Can someone help please?

An Alias would be an email address that is delivered to a different account's inbox.
For instance if you have  [email protected] and have [email protected] Then [email protected] would be an alias if mails from that address arrive at the icloud address.
If you want to add a completely different account, with a spearate inbox, like an account in hotmail and one in say yahoo mail. Then as has been pointed out, you need to go into the  Settings Icon, Tap on Mail, Contacts, Calendars, and then on add account. The iPad has several services preconfigured, you can tap on one of those from the list to setup an email for that service. Such as Hotmail, Gmail etc...
Or you can tap on other to add a personal pop3 or imap type email like from your office, or your school.

  • I am trying to set up e-mail on a second user account but mail preferences is grayed out.  I have looked at some posts which indicate it could be corrupt file and say to deletee .plist but I cannot find that at all.  Any suggestions?

I am trying to set up a Mail account for a second user.  I have made the user account but when I try to set up Mail, it fails as if the password or e-mail is incorrect but I know it is correct.  When I try to go to Mail preferences, it is grayed out.  Any suggestions?

    1. If you haven't tried this already, just delete the user account entirely, and then try setting it up again.
    2. To find the permissions file:
         a. hold down the option key
         b. go to the Go menu in the finder
         c. scroll down to Library and open it
         d. in Library, go to Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Preferences
         e. drag it to the trash and restart.
    3. if that doesn't work, go to Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access. In the Keychain Access menu, do Keychain First Aid, and repair.
This should keep you busy for a while.

I'm currently working with OS X 10.8.2. Mail seems to work properly, but when I try to open mail preferences but nothing happens. I can only see the "rainbow wheel" and mail is blocked. I can only force mail's shutdown. Other applications wprks properly.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether your problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
