Mail preview issue
Is there a way to change the way mail is previewed? It drives me nuts that the inbox is to the left and it keeps an email open behind it
With the Mail app no. You could try a third-party app or access your account through a browser

Mail, preview, photo booth, will not open
After installing Leopard (on my 3rd attempt, clean install) mail, preview, and photo booth will not open at all. i'm opening them from the applications folder, not from the dock. i get an error message that says the programs unexpectedly quit. hopefully i don't have to do another installation. 3 is enough.
i thought it was interesting that these 3 programs are in order alphabetically, and every other program has opened fine.
any help/ideas would be greatWelcome to Apple Discussions:
You might check whether this is a preference corruption issue. For example, you can find the Mail preference file in [Username]/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
Drag this file to your desktop (so you don't lose it). Then try relaunching Mail. If that works, a similar process might fix your problem with the other applications, too.
Please post back here if that helps. If it does, please mark this posting as having "Solved" your question. Thanks -
I’m using a late 2008 MBP and SL 10.6.4 with AP3. After importing around 5000 RAW to a new project, quick preview in full screen isn’t working properly. Viewing the photos in full screen at full resolution is not an issue. Only when switching to quick preview, the image disappears and the screen goes black. When flipping through the photos in full screen and quick preview on, the photos flash up for a blink of an eye before the screen goes black again.
What I’ve tried so far is to delete and generate new previews, repair permissions and the library and rebuild the library. However, as a result all projects now have the same issue. Moreover, photos aren’t shared with other (iLife) applications. The projects in the photo browser in Mail as well as the control panel for desktop background are empty. Sharing with iTunes, i.e. syncing photos on my iPhone, doesn’t work (again, projects have 0 photos). Of course, sharing is enabled in AP preferences. I’ve read several articles about this sharing problem but the solutions posted didn’t work for me. As sharing uses the jpg files, I guess this is somehow related to the quick preview issue.
It seems that for some reason Aperture does not read the jpg files. Any ideas what else I can try to solve this? Thanks!Unfortunately, I do not have a solution for you because I am struggling with a similar problem since the release of AP3. I have also experienced the blink of an eye appearance and disappearance of some previews. Also, sometimes the thumbnails and the preview pictures shown are unrelated, or the previews are scrambled. I have tried every AP2 to AP3 conversion strategy in the book; the result is always the same. Hope Apple finds a solution for this quickly.

I have a Canon 7055 Image Runner with an Image Pass A1. I can't print from Mail, Preview, and TextEdit . . . All three applicationscrash and a "Problem Report" is generated.
Microsoft and Adobe applications seem to have no issues with printing . . . just Apple applications.
Does anyone have any suggestions how to fix this?
I'm on Mountain Lion - perhaps incompatible?
This seems to be a Fiery Features plug-in, but I'm uncertain.
Thanks for any help with this. Thanks John . . . It was after I posted this question that I discovered similar posts, unsure why my search didn't reveal similar!
The discussion you linked me to does apply to my root issue! (Although my plug-in differs) - sounds like a Canon or Fiery Feature plug-in issue. My work around temporarily is to install a second printer using the generic postscript driver - this allows me to print emails. In the long run this isn't a solution because the generic driver is somewhat limited . . . still, it gets the job done for printing items from Mail, TextEdit, and Preview
Thanks -
How do you move Mail, Preview to second monitor?
This is probably a dumb question... I have a second monitor connected to my Macbook Pro. I can move Chrome and other programs to second monitor by dragging them there. I'm unable to drag Mail, Preview to the second monitor.....
What am I doing wrong?Do you mean ---
To a second monitor, or to a third, "grade" monitor?
How "most" people are doing it... among the now 1.4 million licensees of FCP, I can't really comment. I don't think there are that many grade monitors in use, fewer users of even external monitors. For two-monitor setups, the use of a 2xDVI GPU is the way to go, but the video is NOT conditioned for broadcast display, at least up to this version, and not likely to change until Snow Leopard, when the 1.8/2.2 issue is rumoured to be addressed.
The preferred method that was envisioned by the engineering team was to use an AJA or Blackmagic AV-SDI interface, so that all the up/down/cross gamma and colourspace and framerate and resolution issues could be taken care of by somebody else.
There is a landslide of opposition to this because "proper monitors and video interfaces are too expensive". So "many" people gaff-tape and Rube-Goldberg "less expensive" solutions using computer graphics displays. They run into a lot of problems, not restricted to, for examples, an inappropriate contrast ratio, non-standard spectral response, and incompatible third-party color profiling which completely garbles the output.
It is an extremely complex problem. At the moment only SDI is supported, FireWire will likely never happen as it doesn't have the bandwidth to be useful.

This is more of a Mail app issue, and I've posted the question on that board, but I thought I'd post it here because I'm hoping some admins might have dealt with a similar issues:
Is anyone having success with clients on Network Homes using Leopard's Mail.app and an IMAP server?
Things used to work on the same client machines under Tiger, but after upgrading them to Leopard, Mail.app flat out refuses to work.
Users with portable homes seem to have better luck.
Some symptoms:
after working fine for 15-20 seconds, preview pane gets stuck on a "Loading" message. Double-clicking the same email opens it just fine in a separate window.
auto-fill of addresses in the To: field doesn't work. (The little circle on the right just keeps spinning.)
Mail.app does not pull any new incoming messages.
Mail.app refuses to quit cleanly. Force-quitting is the only way to make it quit
Mail.app randomly needs to "Quit or Quit and Rebuild" the database.
Thanks. Thanks to Dan Peterka in this thread:

How do i get back my mail-Preview window?
My mail preview windows has vanished, and it has been bothering me to work without it for quite some time.
I have tried finding solutions on google, but none of them seem to be possible?
(there is no dot to click on, and i can't just pull it out from somewhere)
Can someone tell me what i seem to be doing wrong?
- 2011 Macbook Air / OSX LionRichard,
Double Click or drag the bar that's located on the far right of the mail window.
If your mail preferences is set to "Classic layout" then it's located at the bottom of the mail list window.

Hi!
I've just migrated my old system (PowerMac G5 running 10.5) to a new MacBook Air (11'' Mid 2013) using the migration assistant. I've had problems with crashing applications (as far as I can see only Apple software has been affected: Mail, Preview, Contacts, TextEdit) since I've completed the migration.
I've already done the following: reinstalled 10.9.1 update, repaired permissions and checked volume through recovery. Reset SMC, PRAM and done a safe boot. Rebuilt the Spotlight index. Nothing has helped thus far.
Console is flooded with the following, repeated messages:
12.02.14 09:25:00,727 com.apple.launchd[1]: (com.apple.dspluginhelperd) The following job tried to hijack the service "com.apple.system.DirectoryService.legacy" from this job: com.apple.DirectoryServices

I guess that migration assistant moved something over that interferes with the new systems. Do you have any ideas what to do? My next step would be to reinstall the system from recovery. Any other suggestions?
Thanks!Solved. Threw away the only Imap-Account (Folder [email protected]) and it worked;

Hi,
I'm wondering if anyone has seen this or can provide some direction for further investigation. This is on a new Mac Pro on which I have just installed FCS
In some projects the RAM preview has no effect on playback performance. After generating a RAM preview, the project will play at the same speed (say 2 fps) and as soon as I pause playing, the green progress bar that indicates project is loaded in RAM disappears or becomes fragmented - without modifying the project in any way. When this happens it also becomes nearly impossible to do additional editing as every simple task (as simple as resetting the play range) can result in the spinning beachball. There was a recent thread on RAM preview issues (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12215113) but it appears the problem there was due to a long HDV project. The projects I experience this on generally have a lot of particles or replicated elements, but are standard 720 x 486 resolution projects lasting less than 10 sec. System memory usage is relatively small, less than 4 GB.
These issues arise on a recently purchased MacPro (3.33 GHz 6-Core, 16 GB RAM, ATI 5870). The boot disc is an OWC SSD, and user folders, scratch, etc are on separate hard drives. I installed the operating system on the SSD using the installation disc, and have manually installed all my programs from their original discs. (I initially used migration assistant to bring over applications, but that failed with some applications, so I wiped clean and started over). There have also been some past threads on how different hardware configurations can affect performance, but I don't seem to be doing anything abnormal here.
What I have done:
Tested ram using memtestosx
Verified memory usage through activity monitor. The projects I have tested on use up less than 4 GB of system memory
Before each test or comparison I reset preferences.
I do not have this flakey behavior with an older MBP (17" 2.93 GHz Core 2 MBP with NVIDIA 9600) running the same OS (10.6.4) and motion version (4.0.3). Running the same project on the MBP will take longer for the RAM preview to complete, but when it does, the project plays at full frame rate.
The upgrade to a MacPro was mainly for other CPU and RAM intensive applications unrelated to video or graphics, but I expected motion to show a nice performance boost over the MBP on this new machine. Anyhow, any insight or direction for further investigation that I should pursue will be appreciated.
Thanks.I tried your project (nice, BTW), and yes, 20,000+ particles take some time to render. However, when I did a RAM Preview, I had no problems - after render it played at full speed.
UNTIL...
I selected the emitter. Then playback went to the pre-RAM-Preview speeds. As soon as I turned off overlays or made sure the emitter was not selected, the playback instantly sped back up to full speed. I believe this is because Motion needs to image the constantly changing outline of the emitter. This means it needs to be re-drawn every frame after Motion determines the extent/size of the 20,000 particles on their random journey.
I think this is backed up by the fact that near the end of your project, there are only a few particles to keep track of and the playback appropriately speeds up. Also, CPU usage vastly increases when I turn on the overlays.
Moral of the story? To ensure the quickest possible playback, turn off overlays (⌘/) or ensure that something like a particle emitter is not selected during playback.

Preview issue. Send to iPhoto option is grayed out after Lion upgrade
Preview issue. Send to iPhoto option is greyed out after Lion upgrade.
In Snow Leopard it was an option to send pics from Preview to iPhoto, but now it is greyed out if I right-click on the pic. I have searced and tried everything, but I cannot fix it, so does anyone have a fix for it? Please :-)I can offer no help but would also like to see this issue resolved. Firstly, it would be useful to know if this problem is seen by everyone. When viewing photos in Preview, with thumbnails in the sidebar, right-clicking on any of the thumbnails results in this:
Prior to the upgrade to Lion, "Send to iPhoto" was not greyed out and worked as expected. -
How do i change the mail preview in Lion from a vertical read to a horizontal read
I just switched from Snow leopard to Lion and i don't like the way that Lion has the mail preview set up as a 3 column vertical format. I thought in Snow Leopard you could change the set-up so it's either horizontal or vertical, but I can't seem to find that option in Lion. I want to have the list of my email messages in the top, horizontal window and the preview of the selected message in a horizontal window below. Am I missing this option to change the view format from vertical to horizontal somewhere?
Thank you this solved my problem also... i feel like a duffus for not figuring it out onmy own but who cares I can now get back to work instead of focalising on this... YEAH !

Transport Mail Database issues crashing Transport service
We are experiencing frequent issues on Hub servers (as often as once a week) where Transport Mail DB issues crash the Transport service. Had an MS specialist in the other day who could not exactly figure out the root cause. The pattern usually is as follows:
1. Event ID 486 - This event refers to a failure to move a log file (associated with Transport Mail DB queues) because it is being used by another process. What that process could be is unknown.
2. Event ID 413 - Unable to create a new logfile because the database cannot write to the log drive.
3. Event ID 492 - The logfile sequence in <dir> has been halted
4. Event ID 17019 - A database operation has encountered a I/O error. The Microsoft Exchange Transport service is shutting down. Exception details: Microsoft.Exchange.Isam.IsamLogWriteFailException: Failure writing to log file (-510)
Also followed by events 7001,1022,1002, and 1003.
Haven't been able to determine what is causing Event ID 486. Not aware of any process that would be tying up the access to the log file. These queue files are stored on a local disk, not a SAN.
Any ideas as to what could be causing this? Running E2K7SP1 Rollup 2 currently on all Exchange systems.Hi,
I suggest that you use the following method to check which process access the log file indicated in the event 486:
Using Process Explorer
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/ProcessExplorer.mspx
Then, we did the following:
1. Launch Process Explorer
2. Click Find, Find Handle or DLL
3. Enter the log name indicated in the event 486 and click Search
In addition, please also check whether any events such as 150004 occur before the Transport service crashes. If you notice the event, I also suggest that you refer to the following article:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb201658(EXCHG.80).aspx

For some reason my Mail previews only appear on the right hand site.
Bevore they apperared below, the way I am used to. But for some reason I do not manage to change it back to the old settings.
Does any one know how to change the preview settings?
Thanks ReneThank you to everybody. Restarting is definitely solved the problem. Was it bug?

Hi,
I'm working in After Effects CS4, and I'm having a problem when I try to RAM preview short sections of an animation project. The RAM preview keeps stopping before it reaches the end of the work area, and beginning again. I'm pretty new to the program, but I've also noticed the little green bars that, I believe, tell you if the section has rendered/processed always have little gaps in them. That may be related. I don't know.
Does anyone know what may be causing this RAM previewing issue?
On a side note, I'm using After Effects on a Macbook (not a Macbook Pro), and I'm wondering whether this problem may be due to the Macbook not being sufficient for After Effects and CS4 in general. (I had originally intended to install the program on my 2004-era G5 tower, but it wouldn't install After Effects CS4 because apparently the program won't work with PowerPC processors, only Intel ones. At least that's what I was told.) Anyway, I've wondered whether the RAM previewing issue may be due to the Macbook not being enough computer for After Effects/CS4. My Macbook has a 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 and 106 GB of available space.
Any insights on the RAM previewing issue and whether my Macbook isn't a suitable computer for these programs would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks a lot,
NeilFrom the theoretical specs there is nothing that speaks against your notebook. Apparently the biggest hurdle for some users is to get it to run in the first place, but now that it runs, it's safe to say that you will be able to use it properly. Of course, to let truth have its way, you will become slightly peeved at a point and get that yearning for a new machine, when you use more functions and your projects become more complex. Especially the only 2GB RAM will then often become a show stopper and you will really hate Adobe when one of those dreaded "Could not creat X x Y buffer" or similar out of memory warnings pop up. Still, no need to rush. Take your time and see, if AE is even everything you thought it would be and then make clear, structured plans for getting a new computer. You wouldn't wanna spend another 2000 bucks on a spiffy machine just to run AE once a month.

Adobe Content Viewer (desktop preview) issues
The Adobe Content Viewer (desktop preview) runs off the bottom of my screen (27") when viewing content from InDesign for the new iPad. Would like to be able to alter window size and be able to scroll down to view artwork at full size. Am I missing something simple?
I've downloaded the latest updates for the folio producer tools as well as the folio panel update. The Adobe Content Viewer for the desktop currently doesn't preview new iPad (2048x1536) folios properly. This desktop preview issue should be fixed in the next release.
