Mail preview pane

Hi,
Can someone tell me how to get the preview pane bar back please?
I'm using Mail 2.1.1 and lost the preview pane earlier today. Everything I'm reading online says there should be a bar with a circle on it under the list of emails, which can be clicked or dragged to restore the pane.
I haven't got this on my Mail window, all I can see is my list of email's disappearing off the bottom.
Can anyone help please..??!
Cheers,
Dave

You’re welcome.
Yes, re-creating com.apple.mail.plist would be the next thing to try here -- maybe there is something wrong with the setting that determines where the bar should appear. Proceed as follows:
1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
2. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong while trying to solve the problem. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is stored.
3. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences/. Locate com.apple.mail.plist and move it to the Desktop (to be deleted if this fixes the problem).
4. Open Mail. You’ll have to set up your non-.Mac accounts from scratch all over again. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don’t. Just enter the account information and Mail will automagically rediscover the data in ~/Library/Mail/ when done.
You’ll also have to re-configure most of your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
5. As a side effect of re-creating com.apple.mail.plist, Mail might rename Outbox (which is where messages waiting to be sent are stored) to Delivered. The name of that mailbox is actually a misnomer, as it would contain messages (if any) that couldn’t be delivered for some reason. You can delete that mailbox if you wish.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.

  • Mail preview pane filling up with unnecessary info !

"Crossed over" to Macbook and loving it, but... having set up Mac Mail with my Gmail account, I find that the preview pane for each message has dozens of lines of routing information before it gets to the actual email content. For example, 10 lines headed "received"with info about SMTP etc, authentication details and all that kind of stuff. So much so that the message itself ends up below the bottom of the screen, which kind of defeats the purpose of a preview pane. Any suggestions???? I would really like to resolve this as I started out using Entourage and found it kept freezing when I attached files to emails, so it would be nice to find some part of the Mac system that works as efficiently as Outlook on my old Windows PC - not that I am nostalgic for it!!!

Hi timinbrazil & welcome to the forums.
I see those when I have 'Long headers' enabled in the 'View/Message...' menu - toggle off to hide.

  • Mail preview pane will not scroll down long messages.

    using mail 3.6
i use the preview pane to view all my messages. when attempting to scroll down a longer message, whether using the arrow keys, arrow buttons, or scroll manually, mail will "pop" the message back to the top. if i double click the message and open it in a separate window, the same thing happens.
even if i stay on a message, and allow all content to load, mail will still pop back to the top of the message.
i looked through a couple of forums, and didnt see this exact dilemma, so please excuse if it is addressed elsewhere.
    any ideas?

  • Apple Mail - Preview Pane - No Preview

    Ladies and Gentlemen:
Apple Mail developed a strange behavior.
Neither in the preview pane nor when you double click the mail the content is visible.
Why is this? How can it be repaired?
    Thank you very much!

  • Mavericks & Mail Preview Pane

I just downloaded OS X Mavericks and now in Mail the preview pane is on the right side not the bottom like how it previously was. Is there anyway to put it back at the bottom without changing it to Classic layout?

Hi jrdalvi, did you ever figure out how to get it back? I just did, I used your trick to get back the classic preview on the bottom by clicking classic layout. Then I unclicked classic layout and you'll see a small bar on the right hand side, place your cursor on it and you'll see a small arrow, simply drag it to the left and the preview will appear.

  • Why does Apple Mail preview pane display only sender's first name?

Some, but not all, of the mail I receive shows only the sender's first name in the preview pane. I've checked the three areas others have mentioned as possible sources of the problem: 1.) Both first and last names appear for these senders in my Contacts. 2.) None of these senders appear with only first names in my Previous Recipients list. 3.) The full headers don't show first name only.
When I used Entourage, emails from the same senders never showed only first names in the preview pane.
Is this a bug in Apple Mail? Is there a workaround?

I came here looking for a similar answer. Some of my HTML messages show up just fine in Mail 3.5. Others, I get the plane text alternative or a bunch of raw HTML. With no answer in sight on the Discussion groups, I decided to look at the raw mail message of one of the offending emails.
Under the View menu I found a sub menu called Message then there are 6 choices beneath that:
    *Long Headers*
*Raw Source* (which is what I was looking for)
    +(and then below a separator I found a surprise!)+
    *Plain Text Alternative* (grayed out)
    *Previous Alternative* (grayed out)
    *Next Alternative* (available)
    *Best Alternative* (available)
Only the appropriate ones for the current message display format are available.
So low and behold selecting "next" or "best" changed my message into fully readable HTML format with pictures, formatting, etc.
I am assuming that something in the way that the multipart MIME message is assembled by some senders' systems does not sit well with Mail. I'm not going to bother figuring it out, but I'm sure that close examination of the raw message would give some clues.
Now if only I could figure out how to choose the message format based on the sender, I could eliminate having to change every message that comes in from that sender. Maybe AppleScript and a Mail Rule?

  • Leopard Mail Preview Pane

In Tiger, the preview pane for mail was made into columns. First the mailboxes, etc, then the mail, then the preview pane. Now, in Leopard, the preview pane is below the list of emails. I prefer the former. Any idea how to change it back? I've looked in preferences, view, window and can find no answers. Also, no one else has posted anything about this that I could find.
Am I that obtuse or am I the only one who cares?
    Please help.

This was never the default view (the preview pane has always been below the messages by default), so you must've had a plugin installed that allowed you to change it. As suggested in another reply, take a look at Letterbox and, if that doesn't work, WideMail.

  • Outlook 2013:Possible to remove/edit layout header in mail preview pane?

I get many hundreds of emails a day. I need to glance quickly at the first paragraph or so of an email.
Can't do that, because the top of the reading pane is 100% NOISE (reading pane at bottom). It's an oversize repeat of what is in the email list, and, on smaller screens, blocks 100% of the email message. If I want to see a picture, and all the other
extras, I can open the email. In 99.9% of all my emails, the picture is a placeholder anyways.
And if you click on it to try and scroll it, you mostly get the empty placeholder social crap to pop up, causing even less efficiency, as you try to get it closed. Seems to be designed for light, casual use, not for IT professionals.
So, can the layout be edited? Nothing that I can find so far.
    Rick Hantz

This is driving me crazy too! Enough that I have wasted an hour of business time to try and find a solution. For some, this may be a casual social application. But, for everyone I know it is a business application. For those of use that want "information
at our finger tips" an option for a compact header would be great. It's too bad we can't edit the entire header display.
Perhaps the dev team could offer us a header view dropdown that offers none, compact and social.
So far I have been disappointed with the general design of Outlook 2013. All of the office tools are used by myself and my peers as business tools not casual social media interfaces. An application should be designed of it's audience and not driven by trends.
Additionally, I also agree with all of the messages I have read on the internet complaining that the flat grey look is not easy on the eyes; perhaps distracting, possibly wasting productivity time. I have make sure my laptop screen is positioned just right
so I can distinguish one thing from another. I have tried the limited grey color choices.
Lastly, is there a way to stop the scroll bar from popping on and off as I go back and forth from the Outlook folders and the list of messages pane? I have a lot of folders and a lot of messages. Aside from
the visual annoyance of it's flashing on and off, it is annoying to not know where my scroll bar handle is when I am moving my mouse into the folders pane. I would prefer just to have it on at all times.
    Thank you, Bob

This is a font issue. You’ve probably either disabled or removed a font that Mail needs to work properly (e.g. Helvetica):

Just drag the divider line between the preview pane and the message list all the way to the edge so the preview is completely closed. Selected messages will open in a new window with a double-click or the return key.

Previously one could double-click the border seperating the preview pane from the list of messages to hide the preview pane.
In the Mail application in Mavericks this border is no longer visible. How can I hide the preview pane in Mail on Mavericks?

    Hi,
If you switch to Classic View in Mail Prefs, drag the Horizontal Splitter down to the bottom of the screen then switch back to Modern View, the Preview pane will be gone from both views.
