Mail problem resolved

Dear All,
I had problems this morning retrieving email from my POP account and couldn't work out why. I hadn't changed any settings or upgraded anything recently and I could still get the mail from my ISP via webmail, so I was baffled. After reading through some previous postings about Mail problems I saw a reference to MacJanitor and thought I would give it a go. So I ran MacJanitor and hey presto, it worked. No idea why or what it was that MacJanitor cleaned up or fixed that solved the problem.
Any ideas in case it helps others?

This is driving me nuts!!!  I can't get my email ALL day and I'm trying to run a business! So frustrating.

  • More and more mail problems

What a disaster. I've written about my mail problems before with mail before and I know what I managed to do this time is my fault, its something "I" don't understand about mail. But man am I screwed.
I use my imac 98% of the time and I get 100% of my email on it (mobileme, concast, gmail). All works fine.
A week ago I have an emergency appendix surgery and am doing rather poorly so I'm in bed on my macbook air. I need to get my email on that computer. I enable the email accounts so I can get all my "new" mail. Ugh, it starts syncing and bingo 2 weeks worth of mail on my imac is gone. No where to be found. Tons of work mail, important mail, lordy this is a mess.
I know it had something to do with syncing.. the only account that is imap is my mobileme but I lost a ton of mail in that and its not on either computer or on the mobile me page either. It's just gone. And so is the gmail on the imac and again that isn't imap its a pop account and it was mail that was not in my inbox, I had received it weeks ago and put it in other mail boxes I created (like the work folder). And it just is all gone.
IF anyone can shed some light on what I did and how to avoid this, I'd love that. Should I have just gone to the websites to check the mail (gmail site, comcast.net, mobileme site?)
I am really in trouble with this email thing I lost stuff that I can't recreate. What a huge huge mess.
    thanks for any insight,
    Susan

The issue....just resolved itself! I have not a clue how this happened...

  • Mail Problems in Lion

Having problem with mail ever since I installed Lion: it keeps correcting my spelling, when in Mail-Preferences I've selected 'Never' as my spelling-correction option. Pretty annoying, especially since it tries to make spelling corrections of foreign words which are  being used correctly. Anyone with a similar problem? How do I correct this??

I was able to resolve most of my Mail problems after I zapped the pram. Mail was frozen and I couldn't force quit it.  Now I can edit the drafts, and my unread message counter is working again.

  • E75 IMAP mail problem

I've been a happy E75 user for about two months now, but last week my phone suddenly started having problems with my IMAP mailbox.
The setup is this: I have my phone set to check my work email through Mail for Exchange, and my personal mail through my ISP's IMAP server. Both have been configured to sync every 15 minutes and with set time frames (no need to check work mail during evenings or weekends ). My phone has the latest firmware installed.
Everything was working fine for two months, but last week I noticed that the phone wasn't checking my IMAP mailbox. Furthermore, I found that it was actually unable to even show me the mailbox. If I tried to open the mailbox through the email client or the main screen, the screen would flash as if it was trying to open something, but return immediately. When I closed and reopened the mail client, I was able to access my mailbox, but once I closed it, I was again unable to open it. I tried all the immediately obvious solutions: reboot, reboot and remove battery, remove the mailbox and recreate it, nothing worked. I even tried removing the MfE mailbox (which was working fine all the time), but no luck. I went to email.nokia.com, and downloaded the Nokia messaging client, but apparently the same version (9.05(75)) is preinstalled and I can't reinstall it. Interesting point though, if check the version of the email client, the about box shows version 2.0.5. So I'd be curious to know what client my phone is actually using...
Once the problem is "on", the email client somtimes loses the entire mailbox from the main email client window, and it is always missing from the settings window. But once I close the client and reopen it, everything looks normal again.
I tried Googling for a solution and searching this forum with no luck. I was quite frustrated as I get a lot of email I would like to see ASAP, so I was at a loss as to how to fix this.  Luckily, after a few days of bugging me, the phone suddenly decided to start working properly again ! Almost properly that is. Right now I can open my mailbox and check my mail manually (without having to reopen the email client every time), but it isn't syncing the mailbox automatically. Also, the original problem has reappeared twice during the past week, but fortunately went away with restarting the mail client.
So has anyone else experienced a similar problem? Inability to open a mailbox and/or mailbox not syncing? My MfE mailbox has been working and syncing fine all this time, it is only the IMAP mailbox which is having problems.
I've tried every trick I know besides a total reformating of the phone. Can anyone offer an alternative solution?

Well it seems that the phone fixed itself. Today I did a reboot because the phone was acting all slugish, and lo and behold after the reboot it actually started checking my IMAP mailbox again! (And yes I've done a dozen reboots without the problem resolving...)
So now my phone is fully functional again, but I still would like to know what happened, because there clearly is some bug in the IMAP client that caused it to work erratically. It would be nice if some tech guy from Nokia could say that they are fixing bugs on the IMAP client for the next firmware

  • Mail problems in Lion-drafts, message indicator

I have encountered the following problems regularly since switching to lion:
    1.  Message indicator in dock does not display count of unread messages
    2.  Drafts, once saved, cannot be edited.
    3.  Multiple drafts of sent messages remain in the draft mailbox.
I've tried resetting some of the preferences, such as unchecking the box to keep drafts on the server, with no success.  I have also rebuilt the mailboxes.  I have repaired permissions.

I was able to resolve most of my Mail problems after I zapped the pram. Mail was frozen and I couldn't force quit it.  Now I can edit the drafts, and my unread message counter is working again.

  • VERY annoying Mail Problem

I'm having random mail problems that are quite strange. If I have an E-Mail waiting on my account, when I start Apple mail, it will get the message but the little wheel will just keep turning and then I can't quit mail. I have to do a force quit. Then if I start mail, the same message comes through again and it repeats the cycle. I've tried various things and I've even got rid of all mail preferences and the mail folder and started from scratch and when it tried to create an account, it does the same thing. The funny thing about it is that if I delete the messages on the server and start mail. Any further message will arrive correctly and mail doesn't go into this "loop" and all will be well until the next time I start up mail and there a message waiting to download.
This thing is driving me up the wall as it seems almost to be a random thing. There are some interesting messages in the console log though that may help. First off, I don't think this problem even started until I installed Safari 4, then, I updated to Safari 4.0.1 today but it didn't help the problem.
Here's the message I'm getting in the console logs.
    Jun 17 18:57:20 The-Beast Mail[371]: WebKit Threading Violation - NSData* -[WebArchive data](WebArchive*, objc_selector*) called from secondary thread
Jun 17 18:57:20 The-Beast Mail[371]: Additional threading violations for this function will not be logged.

Count me in with the same problem. I have spent 5-6 hours already on trying to troubleshoot the issue.
These are the processes that I have gone through so far:
--Used Terminal to turn off Mail's auto function for checking for new mail, so that it is check to manual checking. (The reason I had to go through Terminal to accomplish this was my Mail settings were set to check automatically ever minute. After force quitting 10+ times and restarting Mail and trying to get to the preferences and switch to manual checking before Mail started the auto process of checking. I could not beat it in time. LOL <very frustrating> Problem that I encountered, which seems similar to the both of you is that mail would begin the checking new mail process and then I would get the spinning grey gears next to every email account I had in Mail. It just looped and eventually I would have to Force Quit Mail.
I ran disk permission repairs and keychain first aid. No apparent problems. I removed a couple of 3rd party bundles from user/library/Mail/bundles and /library/Mail/bundles as suggesting in one of Apple's tech documents.
Still no signs issues rbeing resolved. According to another Apple doc, if you have startup disks from 10.5.7 onwards, you can re-install certain Apple applications without having to reinstall the entire operating system. Mail is one of those Apple applications and I just purchased a new MAcBook Pro which did indeed have 10.5.7 discs.....so I re-installed Mail. No resolve of issues.
The next step I took was one which I learned from an Apple support call a couple of years ago with a similar mail issue. The tech had me set-up a new user account on the same machine and begin re-adding mail accounts in Mail in the new-user account. I imported the mail messages from the non-working Mail application in original user account. I was able to import folders from old account into the newly created account's folders. Basically I didn't loose any mail. I did not copy over any of the various preferences files associated with Mail. (files ending in .plist)
So this is where i am now. I am going to do some research regarding any library, pref files etc. that are associated with the Mail. I plan on trashing all those files in my original user account and all data/message files which have already been imported into the new user account.
My next step will be the transfer the entire Mail folder located at newuser/library/Mail to the original user account in the same location. I will also be replacing any of the pref files mentioned above that I find which are Mail related. With fingers crossed, hopefully Mail will be working fine, just as it now in my newuser account. Wish me luck.
I'll log back on later to let you know the results. It's a very time consuming process. <sigh>

  • Major Mail Problems!

    Hi all, (Mac Mail 1.3.11 (v622) ) OSX10.3.9
i've been having some major mac Mail problems for a while now, with no clear understanding on how to resolve them. It may be the case that i am managing my mail all wrong, so any correctional advice would be welcome too.
I receive a lot of graphics pic files through from work as well as sending them, so for me it is relatively important that i keep a lot of the emails over the past 6 months to a year on my machine. When i say a lot it might only actually be a 3mb jpeg pic a day.
Anyway, a while ago i started to get this message come up when tried to access new email
"...The message from "Mr X" <[email protected]> concerning “Emailing: xxxx.jpg ” has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it."
This seemed to happen for a lot of the emails, even ones that didn't have any attatchments to them. I posted here a good while ago about it, and discovered from someone else that quitting mac Mail, and then opening it again at the email that you just quit from, would open the particualr email you wished to see!!!!!
I've been doing this process for a while now, but find it to be very irritating. Over the period of this problem, i have wiped my machine, and reinstalled OSX, hoping that it would sort this out, but with no luck.
Now i have to admit, that i don't really understand the whole mail server thing. I would have thought that any past mail i download is then stored onto my mac, enabling me to access it any time, so long as it is there in my mailbox. Also, i have backed up mailboxes, a few times, but agin this dis not seem to solve the problem.
Today, the Mail decided to do it's own backup process, so i left it to it. It cleared my mailbox and left my with 300 random emails left. I needed to access some of the past few weeks emails, so then had to re-import the backup mailbox containing something ridiculous like 7000 emails!
when i click on one of them, it requires that i "You need to take this account online in order to download it." but then i quit the application and then open it again, and it's there!!!
If anyone can help me with this i'd be most grateful as it's driving me up the wall! Even some helpfull tips in maintaining a healthy mailbox would be welcome.
    Thanks
    AstroBhoy

This incorrect error message indicates an "overstuffed" mailbox issue which means the mailbox has approached or exceeded the recommended size limit or has some corruption.
All email clients have limits and the recommended mailbox size limit for Jaguar and Panther Mail is 1 GB and for Tiger Mail, 2 GB. This problem is much more common with Jaguar and Panther Mail and has all but been eliminated with Tiger Mail which uses a significantly different mbox filing structure for each mailbox.
An "overstuffed" mailbox issue can occur at any mailbox size with Jaguar or Panther Mail but is more likely to occur depending on the number and size of message attachments contained in a mailbox and especially as a mailbox approaches or exceeds 1 GB in size.
Since you regularly receive and send a lot of graphic file attachments, you should utilize user created "On My Mac" location mailboxes to sort received and sent messages by category. This can be done on a monthly basis with the emphasis on not allowing a mailbox to approach or exceed anywhere near 1 GB in size and it is also a good idea to use the Rebuild Mailbox function on the most active mailboxes on a regular basis - once a month or so depending on activity.
Before upgrading to Tiger, I didn't allow any mailbox to exceed 500 MB or so in size and used the Rebuild Mailboxes function on the most active mailboxes once a month or so and never experienced this problem.
Regarding the problem with this account's Inbox mailbox, quit Mail first and using the Finder go to Home > Library > Mail > this POP account named folder (named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account) > INBOX.mbox.
Move the INBOX.mbox to the Desktop.
When re-launching Mail, a new and empty INBOX.mbox will be created automatically by Mail within the account named folder. This will allow the Mail.app to function properly again with this mailbox and not risk losing any new messages received with this account while working on the old INBOX.mbox moved to the Desktop to recover the existing messages.
Control-click on the old INBOX.mbox moved to the Desktop and at the menu window that appears, select Show Package Contents.
List the package content file names and size of each providing this information here. This information is required to determine the next steps to take to recover the existing messages.

  • TS3276 Mac Mail Problem

    Hi Folks,
on my PowerBook (OS X 10.8) my Mac mail cant send and receive E-Mails from one day to the other. Nothing was changed; on other devices the accounts are still working with the same config data. Disabling firewall temporally cant fix the problem. Is there a repair option available? Should I use TM to recover?

Hi BDA, thanx for trying to help!
I have Mac mail on my PB G4. I had the problem resolved my getting rid of a Daemon as well as making more space on my hard drive that was almost maxed out at 11Gigs.
All that was slowing me down to the point of crawling even though my other comp the IBook had a download speed of +20mbs.
So all is well for now!
    Regards and thanx again.

I am having the same problem but cannot get anything but the actual phone to work.  I have a unlocked 3GS running 6.0 (what was I thinking?).  No data whatsoever, no texting, no visual voicemail.  I simply cannot access the APN settings.  I have tried sim swap, I have tried APN changers.  I have been on the phone with ST tech support for hours and hours.  I have tried to get the answers from a "genius".  I am stuck and looking at Android devices, but would really like to keep using the iphone with Straight Talk.

  • Ongoing Keychain-Mail problem

I guess the last discussion was removed for some reason, so I'll start another one. Myself along with many others seem to be having problems getting Keychain to remember the password for our mail accounts. I have tried everything that I have found on the internet but still cannot solve this problem. SBC (my DSL provider) informed me that it is a Mail problem, and it makes sense. Anyone know how to fix it or if you're listening Apple, can you update Keychain for us?

SBC (my DSL provider) informed me that it is a Mail problem,
    and it makes sense.
This is not a Mail problem. If a Mail problem then many more Mail users besides SBC customers would be reporting the same which is not the case. SBC customers who are Windows users are also experiencing the same.
SBC has reported to Apple and to some of their customers who have complained, they are having problems affecting some of their mail servers, not all.
The request for authentication fails within a too short period for the transactions to be authorized.
You need to contact SBC and ask when they expect to have their server problems resolved and/or be patient until they do. When they tell you this is an Apple/Mail problem, ask them about the reports by Windows users with the same problem.

  • Upgrade install to 10.5 Mail problems solution

Ok, I am posting this after 2 days of research why Mail behaves crazily after I installed 10.5 via update. I tried archive and install as well with same Mail problems resulting.
Now maybe this wont work for everybody, but it solved all my problems like a charm resulting in Mail working perfectly now.
After one whole annoying day behind the forums I just thought I should post it.
The basic problem was that my Mail didn't want to receive messages while the progress bars were just spinning infinite. Quitting Mail had to be done via Force Quite to stop it.
First thing i noticed was that if I open "*Previous recipients*" panel I get the everlasting spinning beach ball.
So I gathered that there must be some problem in the communication between Mail and Address Book. I backuped the Address Book database and deleted everything I could find connected with Address Book.
Next step was going to Mail folder in my User Library where I deleted all mailboxes .plists and mails because I had some messages I couldn't delete in Mail app. I also deleted other .plist files.
Then I reinstalled Address Book via additional install and rebooted the machine.
Address Book now contained no addresses. I opened Mail, and bingo everything started working, opening "previous recipients" showed 0 contacts and I starter using Mail without problems.
To finish the thing, just backup Address Book ad voila.
Now, maybe that won't sort out everybody's problem, but it sure did mine. And I had all Mail problems described on this forum while sing Mail.
Good luck fixing this highly annoying Leopard feature!

    Hi,
Same thing here. All printers gone. Archive & Install 10.5 on a 2.33Ghz MBP. Cannot find my network printers. Tried everything I can think of. When I boot from my external drive (10.4.9) everything works great. Leopard also ate my company VPN and won't give it back. Any help would be welcome.

  • Many syncing and e-mail problems.

Hi folks, lots of syncing and e-mail problems here:
Syncing: My phone won't sync iCal (it tells me my phone is disconnected), my safari bookmarks or my email accounts. I've been through the threads here, tried resetting iSync, tried deleting calendars and resetting to 10 days instead of 30 -- still no luck. For e-mail, initially iTunes saw the e-mail accounts but did not sync theml. I tried the one-time advance settings and now it's not even seeing the accounts and still not syncing them. and for Safari, no luck with the bookmarks at all even thought the check-box is checked.
Also, the iPhone won't receive e-mail from any of my POP accounts, even the one I set by hand (because none of the settings synced.) I used the same settings that I have on my desktop, but no luck. I use RoadRunner, so I know I can't send off it. But I went to the genius bar today and they told me to just leave the SMTP server field blank and I should be able to receive, but all I get on wi-fi and edge is a message that says, "Cannot Get Mail, the connection to the server "pop-xxxxxx etc" failed." even on my home netowrk, with five bars, it can't seem to connect. (btw, it does seem to be working properly on my .Mac account, but I don't use that account for most of my correspondence.)
As far as the sync problems, the genius bar told me to reinstall iTunes, which I did with the new update that just came out this evening. Still no luck.
any thoughts? bum phone? some setting I'm not catching? any help would be appreciated.

    Quad G5   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

You will find the iPhone will freak out over any kind of perceived data corruption. Calendars seem to the worst for this (windows or mac)
Test in a new user and try sending info in each direction. If it works - then your phone works fine.
Other users have reported having to basically copy the contents of their calendars into a sticky or text edit window. delete the calendars and create brand new ones. they then just transfer the data back.

  • E71 E-Mail Key and Related Mail Problems

Since my E71 was updated to the latest firmware (at a Nokia Service Center) around 6 months ago I have had a number of odd mail problems, which manifest themselves as follows:
After an initial boot everything with mail and messaging works fine as expected. However at least once or twice a day the phone switches unpredictably into an odd mode with the following symptoms:
      1) E-Mail key stops responding to short or long presses.
      2) New e-mails and sms messages which arrive do not appear on the home screen as usual, though they may (or may not) appear as small icons in the top right corner of the screen.
      3) For new e-mails only the title/header is downloaded, whereas usually I have it set to automatically download the first 2 K of each message.
      4) New messages still appear as 'unread' even after reading them. Manually setting them to 'read' works, but only after a long delay.
      5) The flashing navigation key light which warns of new messages/mails gets stuck in flashing mode and will not stop until the phone is rebooted.
Problems 1-3 occur every time, and 4&5 occasionally, but all can only be cured by rebooting the phone, after which it works fine again - for a while.
Since I first saw this problem I have updated the firmware twice (it is currently on the latest version), but the problem persists. I wonder if anyone has seen this problem or has any idea how to fix it? It's a great irritation with an otherwise excellent phone, especially since it was all working fine when I first purchased it. Thanks for any comments or suggestions

For anyone who is interested, I've found the answer to my own question, though not the solution to my problem. After several days playing with mail settings I noticed that when Retrieval settings > E-mail to retrieve is set to 'Headers only' or ' Msgs & attachs', there is no problem. However, if it is set to 'Size limit' with a setting of say 2K or 5K (i.e. just enough to capture the first few important paragraphs of any message) then receipt of many types of formatted mails larger than the specified size causes the mail program to crash, and the OS to switch into the odd mode described in my earlier post.
This is particularly irritating since I travel frequently overseas in Asia where roaming GSM data use is expensive (and there are no caps or limits on roaming fees), and due to the nature of my work my e-mails typically come with long threads and large attachments. Therefore I am left with the choice between:
         A) Downloading mail headers only and waiting till I can find a WiFi connection to find out what the message actually says
         B) Downloading the whole message and paying many hundreds of dollars a month in data roaming fees
         C) Using the fixed mail size limit setting and accept that my mail program will crash several times a day and
require the phone to be rebooted each time to restore normal functionality
Anyway, it seem this problem is clearly due a bug with the Nokia mail software in recent builds, since it worked fine with these exact same settings for the first year I had the phone, and repeated clean re-installs of the latest firmware do not fix the problem. Therefore, if any Nokia developers are monitoring this board you can add this to your bug list, and you know where to start looking for the bad bit of code.

  • Mail problems on Yosemite

    Hi there,
Does anybody know if anything is going to be done regarding the mail problem on Yosemite?
this was a recurring on Maverics too...
Since i updated to Yosemite, mail does not work well on my iMac, i cannot get my mail... but i can send mail.
it does not seem to connect properly to my Pop account.
my mail does work well on my iPhone and other devices.
it was fine after the recent Yosemite update, and now it's back... and very frustrating,
is there anyone who can help ? or anyone at Apple that is going to fix it for once and for all ?
    Thanks.

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
