MAIL problem - telefonica smtp outgoing server

First sorry this is on the safari board. Couldn't find the one for mail!
I am on holiday and the ISP I can find (public) is Telefonica. I have tried the standard smtp outgoing server (smtp.telefonica.net) but even on this I keep getting a "address rejected by server'. I've tried different servers but I think telefonica is fairly tight about that sort of stuff. I think the problem is a password and username is needed however I can't get these.
Is there any way around this, perhaps setting up a personal smtp server, or someway of bypassing their outgoing mail restrictions? This is my first mac so I'm a little bit stuck...
hope you can help!

Ok fixed it. For anyone else having the problem of a not being able to send outgoing mail with a public ISP do the following.
1) setup a gmail account and record password and username.
2) Set up a new server in mail: "mail/preferences/accounts/outgoingmail server (drop down)/edit server list"
3) add a new server by clicking on 'plus'
4) server name is 'smtp.gmail.com'. check 'use custom port' and enter 587. check use ssl box.
5) in Authentication drop down, choose password then enter your gmail username and password.
All this worked for me after fannying around with loads and loads of far more complicated things! Hope this helps someone like it did me!

  • Dealing with two email accounts that use the same SMTP (outgoing) server

    Folks:
re:   mail.app  5.2 (MacOS 10.7.4) with respect to POP accounts only
I've read this thread multiple times, spent many hours experimenting, and my web searches haven't come up with any more useful help.
How do you persuade mail.app to accept settings for two similar, but distinct email accounts that use the same SMTP (outgoing) server?   Say, the accounts are "blue.example.com" and "[email protected]". These have different user names and passwords.   The SMTP server is "smtp.example.com".
I think this is the appearance of success: the SMTP Server List (as seen in edit-the SMTP-Server-List mode) shows:
Server Name                   In Use By Account
        smtp.example.com      [email protected], [email protected]
(Description column omitted for brevity.  And of course, mail.app doesn't show the little envelope icons.)
But I cannot reliably achieve this result.   When I select the SMTP server from the list for the second account --as suggested in the above-referenced thread--- I see the credentials (user name and password) for the first.  Should I overwrite them?  No, I don't think so -- I think that will break the first account.   I feel mail.app should present me with empty credentials boxes instead.  Maybe this happens -- sometimes.  But I can't see how to make it happen.  Am I simply overlooking something?
A slightly different way of asking about this issue:   Suppose  I manage to do a proper setup for the two accounts and they work.  Then I change the password for "[email protected]" on the server. What is a reliable way of reaching the SMTP credentials for that account to make the edit?  Same question for "[email protected]"?    Even when I successfully attach two accounts to one SMTP server, I seem only able to reach the first listed one to make changes. (In this case, "blue.example.com").
It is possible I'm missing something incredibly obvious...    I know the credentials for each account are distinct, but maybe mail.app copies them from the POP (incoming) settings.   Nah, that can't be, can it?   Or what?
Maybe I'm seeing bizarre things due to scrambled mail.app preferences.  I've seen it before on other apps: delete the current preference file, get an auto-generated fresh one, and sanity returns. But with mail.app, with the prospect of losing years of emails --yeah, I've done it--  I'm extremely reluctant to mess around.
    Suggestions, please.
    TIA

OK, I'm convinced.   The mail.app UI is BROKEN -- in my primary user account.  Such that it cannot reliably select an outgoing server for editing.
I created a new user account and installed some relevant example accounts in mail.app in that account.  No problem. Well, a bit obscure, but still fully logical and reliable selection of individual SMTP accounts for editing.
For the sake of clarity, I think it is best to mark this "answered" and repost, focusing on the symptoms and asking how one might go about repairing the problem.  So I'll do that.

Yosemite Mail deleted all my outgoing server settings. Any way to retrieve them?

What is your email provider (e.g Gmail, Microsoft, Yahoo, Comcast, AT&T, etc...), and what email client software are you using (Apple Mail, Thunderbird, Outlook, etc)?
It's likely far easier to just Google the correct settings for your mail provider and recreate the outgoing (SMTP) settings.

In Mail Settings Lookup, my outgoing server is not listed correctly.  How does it get changed

Yes, how does it get changed in the online "Mail Settings Lookup"  It is wrong there, but right in my mail preferences.  My Charter Account is locked on my computer.

  • Yahoo mail can't send - Outgoing server "(null)" failed

I can not send ONLY from MY Yahoo email address. When I try to send a message is says "Outgoing Server '(null)' failed."
I have tried changing my password to one without numbers or characters, deleting the account and re-adding, restoring the iPhone. Nothing.
Here is the wierd thing: any other Yahoo account works just fine. My wifes yahoo address works perfectly, I created a new one and it works perfectly as well. It is just my address. Has anyone else had this problem?

I have the same problem. The issue is IMAP vs. POP. Setting up the bizmail account with the pre-loaded "YahooMail" link in the Mail setup options sets up your bizmail account with IMAP settings. While this allows you to see all your storage folders from the server, for whatever reason, you can't receive mail as the incoming server "null" fails. I can send mail just fine, but I can't receive. Now the work-around was to set it up as an "other account," not using the YahooMail link. Then you have to select "POP", then use "pop.bizmail.yahoo.com" (ignore the quotes) for the incoming mail server with SSL turned OFF. For outgoing, you use "smtp.bizmail.yahoo.com:465", turn ON SSL. The 465 designates the correct port, so you should have that in there. This will allow you to both send and receive, but will NOT allow you to view your storage folders. The account would have to be set up as IMAP in order to see those folders, but I have been unsuccessful in getting that information from yahoo business support. They are as useless as the "geniuses" at the Apple Store. Hope this helps!

    Hi!
I want to install a Symantec Mail Security for SMTP 5.0.1(host1) with Messaging Server 6.3 (in production - host2), but when I try to access to POP protocol to send a message from Internet, the system display a message with a relay problem.

internet -> symantec mail security system -> sun messaging server -> recipientA better approach is the following

  • Yahoo Biz mail can't send - Outgoing server "(null)" failed

I recently purchased the iPhone and can't get my Yahoo biz mail account to send mail, it only receives. I have read the other thread on this topic and reported it via the Apple feed back site but I still have not seen anyone post a reply that has found a solution for this other than using POP3 which then limits folder access only to the inbox. Does anyone have a success story for this issue and a way to solve the problem? Please reply if you have any info. Thanks!

Try cwmx.com as the host name on outgoing server under mail. I don't use Yahoo biz mail , but it solved my problem last week

  • Mail is using wrong outgoing server

We just changed hosts for our company email and website. I set up a new account with the new info for incoming and outgoing servers. When I try to send Mail tries to send using the old outgoing server, despite the fact that I entered the new server info when I set up the new account in Mail.
When it bounces back I get a pull down menu where I can choose the right server and then it works. I don't want to delete the old account as I'd loose the emails in it. Is there a place where the computer stores a list of servers where I could delete the old server name?

Mail tries to send using the old outgoing server, despite the fact that I entered the new server info when I set up the new account in Mail.
Because you didn't make the new account the primary one, so Mail chooses the current primary account and it's mail server settings. You'll need to go to Preferences > Composing and select your new account from the pop-down list as the "Send new email from:" account.
Is there a place where the computer stores a list of servers where I could delete the old server name?
Yes. Preferences > Accounts > Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP):. Click on the pop-down menu and select Edit Server List… to remove servers.

  • Problems Connecting to Outgoing Server

What would cause me to be unable to connect to the outgoing server to my school's email account?
I've checked all of my settings, talked to my ISP and the IT department, and nothing has worked. I've even tried having the mac's firewall set on "Allow all incoming connections", but that didn't work either. Something is blocking me from connecting to the outgoing server, but I can't figure out what exactly is causing the problem.
I also tried doing a ping through network utility but I don't know if it is reliable because both the outgoing and incoming server for my school's account is the same (mail.etbu.edu).
Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

(Well, the IT department originally specified to use port 25 if I was not using SSL or use 465 if I was using SSL. I tried both ports with and without SSL, but nothing had worked. They said nothing had changed on their end for over a year. Everything had been working fine for a few weeks when I first started using Mail, but now it won't connect. I even tried changing the firewall settings to "Allow all Incoming Connections," but no luck there either.)
    I opened terminal and tried:
    telnet mail.etbu.edu 25
    telnet mail.etbu.edu 465
    telnet mail.etbu.edu 587
Port 465 is the only one that would connect. So, I changed my settings to the following:
incoming server (mail.etbu.edu): Port 995 with SSL and Authentication: Password
Outgoing server (mail.etbu.edu): Port 465 (custom) with SSL and Authentication: Password
But still no connection to outgoing server. Ideas? Thoughts?

  • Mail problem accessing Novell POP server

This one is both complicated and puzzling, and I sure would appreciate a solution.
We use Novell Groupwise for email. It allows both POP and IMAP access.
Two weeks ago, I stopped being able to access mail from the servers using either POP or IMAP from both home and office. Simultaneously, almost. At home I was using Mail, at the office Eudora.
After the usual tinkering, I got both home and office working with Mail through POP. That lasted a few days.
Yesterday, POP stopped working at the office. Then, at one point, it worked, and the day's mail came in all at once. Then it stopped working. I went home. I got a lot of mail when I checked in. Then it stopped. Today, I've gotten no mail at the office from the POP server.
Mail is communicating with the server. When I put the wrong password in, it lets me know it was not accepted. I don't get that message with the right password.
My IT people say the mail server is functioning properly, and that no one else who uses Mail is having similar problems. I've checked all the settings, and they are as they should be.
    I recently upgraded to 10.4.1.11.
Does this sound like a problem anyone has seen before?

Thanks to infinite vortex.  Changing the frequency from five to fifteen minutes seems to have solved the problem, at least so far.  Curious--but not surprising--that I could find nothing about such a limit anywhere on Cox's web site, nor was this mentioned by their tech support in a series of exchanges trying to resolve the problem.

  • Smtp outgoing server problems

Since i upgraded to version 4 software it seems on my iphone i can receive emails but can't send them from my Virginmedia email account. I keep getting the message sayin the sender address ****@virginmedia.com was rejected by the server.. anyone know why this is happening ?
I do also have yahoo email which is working fine..
    Thanks in Advance :0)

This worked for me when I had this problem. Go to: Settings> Mail, Contacts, Calendars> (click on your account you are having problems with) scroll down to the "outgoing mail server" tab & make sure the server are ON. When I upgraded to ios4 mine was set to OFF & I didn't know it LOL.
    Hope this helps!!!

Why would the out going server which works for iPad not work on iPad mini

Mike found this from the website from your email provider make sure your using the imap server unless you want to use pop on your device.
    Incoming Mail (POP3) Server:
    pop.bellaliant.net
    imap.bellaliant.net
    Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server:
    smtp.bellaliant.net
    imap.bellaliant.net
    Incoming Mail Server Username

  • Mail does not recognize outgoing server for Forwards or content other than text

Since installing Mountain Lion Mail has been erratic.  It generally will not send mail that I Forward nor will it send mail that includes links, graphics photos, etc.  It sends original mail consisting of text only without a problem.  When I try to Forward mail, or send new mail that includes content over and above text, I get the following result:
None of the options will send the mail.   If I “Try With Selected Server”, I go into an endless loop – click on it, get the same Cannot Send… window back.  “Try Later” merely puts the message into my Outbox where it sits – and sits.  It will sit there for days if I let it.  If I sooner or later try to send it, I get the above Cannot Send… window again.  If I “Edit the Message”it still will not send. The Connection Doctor tells me that the mail account is logged in and connected without a problem.  If I “Edit SMTP Server List” I get Mail Preferences – the edit SMTP list window – and no SMTP servers listed – blank list.  Yet the Mail account has the proper iCloud SMTP server in its set-up.  Moreover, text only emails send without a hitch.  I can readily send them before, during and after the “Cannot Send…” window pops up for an email that has other than text included in its content.
Interestingly, if I put the problem email into my Draft mailbox and then go online and log-in to my iCloud account, I can then open the email in iCloud online and send it – and it sends without a pause or quibble. Why won’t it send through Mail on my computer???
NONE of this happened in Lion.

  • Apple mail won't save outgoing server port...? Odd symptom.

Each time I close Mail, the SMTP port reverts to 25. I can enter a new port, but Mail won't save that port info. I have to re-enter after opening Mail each time.
    Symptom goes like this:
Open Mail, then when sending 1st message after opening app an error "cannot send mail using selected server" appears. I need to go into the settings & switch the port from the default port that is displayed (25), to 3535. After doing that & clicking ok, closing the window, the password dialog box appears & mail sends just fine. Every other message from that point will send.
Close Mail, then reopen. Have to repeat same process again.

Two weeks later (after post, above)
I Solved the Problem - I reinstalled Mac OSX 10.6.6 (It was rather painless)
My Mail is working again. Safari now also again remembers passwords.
Also, my Aperture's Mail export also works. (Mail is no longer grayed out).

  • MAIL PROBLEMS!! Outgoing

    Hi there,
when i use mail (from dock, not mobile me) i can receive but i cannot send.
When i do try to send i get the following message:
    'Error
this message could not be delivered and will remain in your Outbox until it ca be delivered.
The attempt to read data from the server "smtp.mac.com" failed.'
I have had this problem for a few weeks now, and i have still not resolved it.
Recently, i moved from Chester to Norwich. Meaning that my internet has changed.
I have been told that this could be the reason???
    thankyou x

    Greetings and welcome,
Could your problem be related to .mac changing to mobleme? If the smtp server has changed it's name that would give you this problem.
To change the address you would go to the accounts tab in preferences. You'll have to visit mobleme to find out if the server name has changed.
