Mail problems-can't click reply and more

When I first got my Imac I transfer all data from my older machine running OS X. Mail worked just fine for a couple of weeks then it started having the same problem I have now. I tried rebuilding and throwing away the preference but no luck so I gave up and reinstalled Mail which caused me to lose my emails and accounts. I set up everything again and things ran fine for the past year. Now I’m having the same problem.
My emails accounts are POP. I have no problem receiving them or reading them. When you click the “reply” or “reply all” buttons you get no response. You can click “forward” and type in a email address but then no further action can be taken. When you click “new message” it will only let you type 2 characters in the message and then beeps at you. I made no changes to the system before this happen. Everything was working fine one day and the next day the problems arrived. Any suggestions?

What you say about reinstalling Mail, besides being a bad idea, doesn’t make sense to me. Reinstalling Mail cannot have caused you to lose anything — actually, that’s precisely why reinstalling Mail is rarely appropriate or useful to solve a problem.
If you lost your mail it has to be because you did something else you shouldn’t have done either, such as deleting the accounts or something like that. Or maybe nothing has really been deleted and your old mail is just inaccessible as a result of something you did...
Anyway, the problem you describe is caused by some Launch Services cache or preferences corruption that affects the built-in spell checker. The following article describes how to manually reset Launch Services — the notes at the bottom of the article also provide information about the side effects of deleting each of the files involved:

If you prefer using a cache cleaning utility instead of following the manual procedure described in the previous article, take a look at this other article for general troubleshooting and cache-cleaning procedures. Actually, you should also verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described there:

The most appropriate utility for this particular problem probably is Tiger Cache Cleaner, but you may also want to consider other utilities, such as OnyX, or Cache Out X, which are free. Whatever utility you choose, be sure to read this first:

As an example, this is how you should proceed with OnyX:
1. Quit all applications.
2. Launch OnyX and enter your administrator password.
3. Go to Maintenance > Reset and check LaunchServices database.
4. Un-check any other pre-checked options.
5. Click the Execute button.
6. Restart the computer.

BTW, after having verified/repaired the startup disk (as described above), if the version of the system software on the Install disc used to reinstall Mail is earlier than what you’re using now (and only in that case), then you must also reinstall the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you’re using, to bring Mail back in sync with the rest of the system:

After installing the Combo Update, the computer may restart twice and the first restart may take several minutes. This is normal.

Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk before installing the update, no applications should be running while installing it, and you may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications (not normal applications) installed.

  • Mail Problem - can't 'Reply' or write 'New' email message

    Hi all:)
    I have a bit of a problem with my mail. When I 'reply' to a message, the sender's address does not come up in the 'to' field. I can type in an address and can put in a subject, but the cursor will not go down to the main body of the message. The same thing happens when I try to send a 'New' message - I can input an email address in the 'To' field and type in a Subject, but the cursor will not go down into the main body - consequently, I can't type a message.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Yes, you can, but Might try this first...
    Quit Mail...
    First I'd backup these two Mail folders, by right clicking on them in the Finder, then choose Archive/Compress.
    Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail
    Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail Downloads
    Right click on that Mail folder, choose archive, you'll get everything in the folder, and the folder itself in a file called Mail.zip, move it to a safe place, same for the Mail Downloads folder... only the plist is separate.
    Try dragging this file to the desktop in case we need to put it back later, then logout/in...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
    (May or may not require you to setup your account(s) again.)
    Quit Mail, then In your home folder, try moving this +folder & file+ to the Desktop then reboot...
    First, Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these +folder & file+ to the Desktop.
    Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
    Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Reboot.

  • Niche iPhone (ios6?) e-mail problem - can't delete

    Hi there,
    I was lucky enough to get an iphone 5 on the release day.  I connected my iPhone 5 account with my work e-mail (using exchange) and with other pop e-mail accounts that I have.  Push is working great on my work e-mail account, however, I seem to be having an e-mail deletion problem.  Here is what happened:
    I received a calendar invite from a co-worker in e-mail format.  I accepted the invite through outlook on my computer (when you accept it, it auto-deletes the invite e-mail from your inbox and replies with an acceptance notice).  So now, my work inbox is empty.  However, on my iphone, it still shows the invite in the inbox.  When I attempt to delete the e-mail from my iphone, it says that the message cannot be moved or deleted, so it just stays there.  The only way to get rid of the e-mail is to delete that mail account, and then re-add it to my phone.
    This also happened on a separate pop-connected e-mail address.  I deleted an e-mail through a webmail interface, the iphone wouldn't see that the e-mail was deleted (even after attempting to sync multiple times) and when attempting to delete it through the Mail app, I received a message stating that the e-mail can't be deleted or moved.
    Anyone else having this problem, any suggestions?

    If your device is signed into an old iCloud ID, and if it is an earlier version of your current ID*, do the following:
    Make sure you are signed into iMessage and FaceTime with your current ID.  If they are signed into the old ID, go to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive and Settings>FaceTime, tap the ID, sign out, then sign back in with your current ID.
    Then temporarily recreate the old ID by going to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  (You should not have to verify the old email account so it doesn’t matter if you no longer have access to it.)  Now go to Settings>iCloud, turn off Find My iDevice and enter your current password when prompted (even though it prompts you for the password for your old ID).  Then go to Settings>iCloud, tap Sign Out (or Delete Account if you are not running iOS 8) and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign back in with your current iCloud ID and password (your data will download back to your device).
    * If that's not the case, you'll have to contact the Apple account security team and ask for assistance resetting the password for the old ID: Apple ID: Contacting Apple for help with Apple ID account security.  You'll have to be able to prove your identity to them before they will do this.

  • Using mac mail I can't click on link

    I use Mac Mail. When I get a email that I have to click a link to take me to Firefox nothing happens. If I restart my computer it will work for about 2 hours and then stop working again. I called Applecare and they had me delete the Cache. That didn't solve the problem. Now I am using Safari and it is working fine. I really prefer Firefox but need the link feature to work all the time.

    I am still using two browsers but it's interesting that I don't have this problem with my Mac Laptop. Mac Mail works fine with Firefox. I have called Apple twice and they have no solution. I did un-install Firefox and then re-installed it but that didn't help. I'm still looking for a solution !!

  • Mail problem- can't receive email

    We have two email accounts (through Comcast) and all of a sudden, only one account has the spinning wheel of endlessness, like it's trying to retrieve mail but never stops. The other account is fine. Both accounts can send mail successfully, and if we go on Comcast's webmail access, we can see the new mail that is not making it to the Mail program. Also, we have to Force Quit Mail. I called Comcast, and they had us change some server port numbers, but that didn't help, and then they referred us to you. Please help.

  • I have too many apps on my ipad can I click remove and then reinstall when I have space. I need to experiment with free apps to see what I like before buying?

    Over the last year I have 'purchased' many free art and photography apps looking for the perfect mix.
    Every now and then I check my purchases and the ones I've had to remove are still in my list of purchases with a little cloud and a downward pointing arrow asking to be installed which is wonderful for me.
    However, I also downloaded lots of free European maps and need to remove them to make room for my art trials. I don't want to lose them either.
    Am I using this resource wisely or is there a better way. I have the 16GB iPad and lots of space is being taken up with art saved in photos pending refining or just photos to inspire.
    PS That's my first question! The next one is about photos and albums but that better wait. Advice on the above is more pressing as is the space on my iPad

    Yes you can.  Any purchases (including free apps) made from the iTunes or Apps Store are kept your history and you can download (install) again as many time you want.  Once you remove any apps, you will then find it to have the cloud logo for installing again.
    The only thing you must worried are any saved content within the app you will be deleting.  As you can download the app again, it's local content (saved files) will be lost unless backed up someway.

  • IOS7 mail problem: Can't Limit Recent Messages

    It seems iOS7 eliminated the option to set the number of recent e-mails to have on the phone.  Looking at the MacWorld guide to iOS7 I found the following : "Similarly, a few settings are no longer available: the option to choose how many recent messages to show..."   This is a problem for me, I have about 30,000 gmail messages, I don't need them all on the phone.  Unless there is an option I can't find, I would respectfully request Apple consider providing thie "# recent" option to iOS7.

  • I have a 1st generation apple tv that my kids use in their tv room but the remote now will only toggle up and down. Anyone have this problem, can only acess movies and can toggle over to the side for tv shows or other content

    Really frustrating. I have tried to pair 2 different remotes to see if that was the problem, but still can't toggle but up or down........ help!!

    Have you restarted the AppleTV?
    I have several white remotes for ATV1's and a couple have 'sticky' up buttons that require a harder press (one of these was chucked in the sunk a few years ago by my daughter), so I'm not convinced of their longevity as much as I prefer them ergonomically over the new silver ones.
    Odd for two to be exhibiting the same issue which which is why I suggest restarting.  If you had a low battery you'd probably be getting an onscreen warning icon.

  • After updating to 9.0.1, I have LOTS of problems. Bookmarks, google search, and more.

    1. The icons accompanying the bookmarks in the list disappeared.
    2. The former method of ordering the bookmarks disappeared and I cannot find any new one. The list of bookmarks in the catalogue (library? I use the program in Spanish) has become incomplete.
    3. By mistake I clicked to show some bookmarks in a horizontal top bar. Now I cannot make it disappear.
    4. And suddenly the google search box disappeared, too! It had been there after the updating until a while ago, when nr 3 happened.
    What is happening here? Something must be seriously wrong, for my bank says I cannot use some of its functions that used to work fine with Firefox if I do not go back to earlier versions.

  • Issues with Facebook; Chat window problems; can't minimize window , and send chat as message when one receiver logs off.

    While using Firefox I have an 2 issues with Facebook chat. 1. Cannot minimize (-) the chat window, only close it (x). When the receiver in chat logs off and a message didn't go through- the option to "send message as email" doesn't work. These have been ongoing problems for several months. I don't have these issues when I use Safari.

  • Weird Problems, Hard Disk icon dissapears and more

    When i startup my computer, my hard disk icon dissapears. I have been to another website and i can use applescript and enter this :

    well this all works find and dandy but once i shut down the computer and start back up it dissapears again.
    and also when i start my computer it asks for the keychain password, i enter it and it goes away. but it comes back up every time i login to my account. i have had these issues since i have installed in on my laptop. no issues at all on my mirror drive 1.25ghz g4.
    ANy ideas???

  • Can't Click and Drag Icons/Files

    Hi,
    I  am  having  issues  with  my  Macbook Pro  13inch  trackpad.
    I  can't  click  anything  and  drag  any  icons/files  as  I  usually  could. I  also  cannot  select  and  highlight  texts  too.
    Earlier  I  was  advised  by  someone  on  Apple  Discussions  Community  to  clean  the  trackpad  for  about  2  min  with  a 
    dampcloth. Later,  it  seemed  to  work  as  usual  but  after  3  weeks  I'm  facing  the  problem  yet  again.
    Anyone  has  a  solution  for  this  problem ?

    If the issue is with pressing the trackpad to click, if that is what you mean by clicking and dragging issues, more often than not it will be an issue with the trackpad itself and you may need a repair. The trackpad can be replaced on your Mac.

  • Why can't I click on and read my yahoo emails?

    This problem just started today. I can log into Yahoo email account, but can not click on any individual email, links on page, folders, etc. The cursor stay an arrow and does not turn into the hand/finger. If I try to click on something anyway, I get the colored spinning wheel! Sometimes I get a message that page is not responding. I was able to access everything this morning with no problem, tonight it has been driving me crazy! I have an Imac, os version 10.6.8, computer is only a few months old! Please Help! I am using Safari also.

    through mail application just open it and then it will ask you to add your email and password. if it didn't ask you click mail, Preferences, accounts, then click the +  and follow the screen.

         There are several different methods. Try one. If it doesn't work,
         then try the next one. Don't try to do everything at once.

    Note: you may need to continue entering false answers to the questions until you trigger the response needed to start making changes. It will take six or nine retries.
    Or you can email iTunes Support at iTunes Store Support.
    If all else fails:
      1. Go to: Apple Express Lane;

      3. Then choose iTunes Store;
      4. Then choose Account Management;
      5. Now choose iTunes Store Security and answer the bullet questions, then click

    Another user had success doing the following:
    I got some help from an apple assistant on the phone. It is kind of round about way to get in.
    Here is what he said to do and it is working for me...
      a. on the device that is asking you for the security questions go to "settings", > "store" >
          tap the Apple ID and choose view"Apple ID" and sign in.
      b. Tap on payment information and add a credit/debit card of your preference then select
          "done", in the upper right corner
      c. sign out and back into iTunes on the device by going to "settings"> "store" > tap the
          Apple ID and choose "sign-out" > Tap "sign -in" > "use existing Apple ID" and you
          should be asked to verify your security code for the credit /debit card and NOT the
          security questions.
      d. At this time you can remove the card by going back in to edit the payment info and
          selecting "none" as the card type then saving the changes by selecting "done". You
          should now be able to use your iTunes store credit without answering the security
          questions.
    It's working for me ...I just have to put in my 3 digit security pin from the credit card I am using.
