Mail problems: signatures and links

I had a problem with Mail yesterday. Somehow I lost the connection between the app and my server, and I had to redo the configuration. When I finished I had all my own mailboxes, but the InBox was still empty, though I could view the new and old messages on the server. I finally got one of our IT guys to figure out what was wrong and he fine-tuned the configuration and my messages were loaded back to my InBox from the server. I mention all that because I suspect it may somehow have caused the problems I have found today.
Signatures: When I open the signature preferences, I have 3 signatures that appear and I can change most everything, except at the bottom where I should be able to choose which signature I want, the only one listed is None, and it is grayed out. So how can I get it to recognize the 3 signatures in the box above that?
Links: When I get an email that has some links imbedded in it, when I click on any of those links, in any of those such messages, nothing happens. I can sometimes go around that by hovering on the link, copying it down on paper, then typing it into the URL blank, but some of the links are so long that is not a reasonable workaround. I really need such links to work for me. Any suggestions?
All help with both problems will be much appreciated.

I think this is an issue with the phone's proximity sensor (the one that turns the screen off when you hold it up to your ear). It's a bug that seems to occur when you switch to another app (any app) while still on a phone call. You'll notice in Messages that the screen goes dark when you move your thumb over the earpiece/iSight camera, but not when you move your other thumb.
Simplest solution is to force-quit the Messages app (double-click the home button, and swipe up on the app). The problem should resolve itself when you restart Messages.

  • Mail.app signatures and rules gone after update

After updating to OS X 10.9.4 and Mail.app 7.3 all my mail signatures and rules are gone.
If I now recreate those rules and signatures they are gone when I restart.
I have tried repairing permissions in disk utility. It has not restored my lost configurations nor does it allow me to maintain preferences across restarts.
I do not have Time Machine backups, all my data is with Google. The only things on my computer which are not on Google are things like this Mail client configuration.
Has anyone else lost this configuration and been able to restore it?

  • Apple Mail problems (Signatures)

I recently found out that my company logo which is used in my Apple mail signature is not displayed on platforms such as, outlook. Outlook users receive my logo as a pasted graphic and my text signature as an attachment. This sort of goes against the purpose of having an email signature, especially when used for business. I spoke with tech support at apple, they advised it was a problem with PC based programs. I called Microsoft and they refused to help me, because I was not using outlook. If anyone has any advice I sure would appreciate the help.

I have the same problem !

  • Mail Problems before and after 10.4.6

On Friday, running under 10.4.5, Mail started acting strangely (it would have the gray wheel around my main accounts -- from two different servers). I would have to force quit. At the same time, address book stopped opening (it would require a force quit as well) and iCal similarly began to have problems (it would not accept new events and would also require a force quit). I upgraded to 10.4.6 and now Mail (2.08) will not open at all and the other problems continue. I have verified the permissions. there is plenty of free space. I am not keen to reinstall and since the problem occurred without any other apparent problem, I wonder if anyone has a solution.

I'm having the exact same problems -- plus Safari is repeatedly crashing. Strangely, it's only happening on one side of the two user set up!!
I reinstalled OS 10.4.5 Monday (4/3) to try to fix the Mail issue, and later that night 10.4.6 was automatically downloaded and installed. That's when the other problems started.
Question: Are fresh versions of just Mail 2.0.8 and Safari 2.0.3 (or later) ONLY available for downloading somewhere?

  • Mail Problems: Loading and Quitting

This might turn out to be a long discription, but bear with me...
I had problems with Mail today--I had just received an iTunes receipt and Mail crashed; it appeared as if the program got stuck loading the new message. When I reopened Mail, none of my messages were loading and it appeared as if I had nothing in my Inbox or any of my other folders. I found on an Apple Discussion post that I should try shutting off the Internet and holding the Shift key down while opening Mail. This worked, so I continued on with the instructions in the threat, which told me to put my Envelope Index and a copy of the Mail folder on the desktop. This prompted me to reopen Mail; Mail then reloaded all my messages and sort of "started over" if you will.
At first, this process appeared to have fixed the problem, but I tried quitting Mail, and now Mail won't quit. The window disappears, but the arrow still points toward the icon in the dock, indicating that the program is still open. When I click on the Icon, the top Menu bar changes to Mail, and Mail is highlighted blue. I am forced to "Force Quit" and reopen. Sometimes, after I do this, I have the same problem where the messages won't load and it appears as if I have no mail in my Inbox or other folders.
I've repaired permissions and cleaned my Mac using Onyx. What now? I can't lose all my messages in my Mail program--I have tons saved!
    Thanks!

    Hello Jessica.
This might turn out to be a long discription, but
    bear with me...
    I love detailed descriptions...
It could be that the crash caused some filesystem corruption, so you should start by verifying/repairing your disk, as described in this article (note that it's not repairing permissions what I'm talking about here):
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
If the problem persists after having fixed all filesystem issues, it could be that the Mail preferences file itself became corrupted and Mail chokes on it when trying to save changes, so you may want to try this (skip step 2 if you already have a backup copy of the Mail folder on the Desktop):
    1. Make sure Mail is not running.
    2. Make a backup copy of the HOME/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is stored.
    3. In the Finder, go to HOME/Library/Preferences/. Locate the file com.apple.mail.plist and move it to the Desktop (to be deleted if this fixes the problem).
You'll have to set up your accounts from scratch all over again. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don't. Just enter the account information and Mail will automagically rediscover the data in HOME/Library/Mail/ when done.
You'll also have to re-configure most of your settings in Mail > Preferences. The first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable "Display remote images in HTML messages" if it's enabled.

  • Signatures and Links

I'm wanting to add a link in my signature. I did it successfully once but now when I click "Add" under Link it takes me to a list of recent web pages. It may very well be the page I want but when I click that it asks if I want to download this application. How do I get to where I put the URL in the Link box and then get the underlined text in my message? Something changed. CraigT

Curious, indeed. It does the same thing on my Mac. One way to get around it, I think, is to create your signature with the link in a new message (it does work there), then cut and paste it into the new signature you create in preferences.

Port forwarding is telling your router to send incoming packages on a specific port directly to a machine in the lan, you don't need that when you are only working inside your lan. You do have to make sure that you connect with your ssh client to the port on which the ssh server is listening.
So the port specified in ssh_config on the laptop needs to be the same as the one specified in sshd_config on the desktop.

  • Digital Signatures and Encryption in Yosemite Mail

After upgrading to Yosemite, I am having difficulty using the Mac Mail app to send digitally signed and encrypted email.
Before the upgrade to Yosemite, I was able to send signed and encrypted emails using certificate/keys in my keychain using both the Mac Mail app and Microsoft Outlook 2011 for Mac.
After upgrading, I am still able to send signed and encrypted message in Outlook, but the Mac Mail app gives the following error when I attempt to send a signed email:
'You don’t have a trusted certificate in your keychain that matches the email address “XXXX@XXXX”. Without a certificate, you can’t sign messages sent from this address.'   (Actual name replaced)
When I look at my certificates in my keychain, a certificate is available with "Usage: Digital Signature" that has the email address from the error message "XXXX@XXXX" with exact case in the RFC 822 Name.
Another interesting piece of data that might help track this down is that when I first launch the Mac Mail application, the Mac Mail application is able to successfully decrypt emails that have been previously sent encrypted to me.  HOWEVER, after I attempt to send an email and get the "You don’t have a trusted certificate..." error message, these emails are no longer able to be decrypted.  I get the "Unable to decrypt message" header above the message and the content of the message is just a "smime.p7m".  If I close the mail application and restart it, these encrypted message are once again decrypt-able until I attempt to send a message.
It almost seems like things are working until mail tries to access the keychain.
I have attempted to delete my certificate and keys from my keychain and then adding those items again.
I have attempted to close the mail application and reopen it.
I have attempted to reboot my computer.

    1.  I want to confirm that this is still an issue for me in 10.10.1 and mail Version 8.1 (1993)
    2.  I have another data point.
At my office I have wired networking and wireless networking available.  Primarily I utilize the wired networking for access to network drives, etc.
When using the wired networking, I experience all the problems that have been catalogued in this thread.  Can't sign, can't encrypt, can't close the compose window after the mail program fails to find my certificate.
However, when I switch to wireless networking before starting the mail application, digital signatures and encryption seem to work!  This is pretty weird behavior.  Make sure to restart mail if you were previously wired.
    Here are some theories:
Something to do with OCSP?  When I am wired vs wireless I am on different ip subnets and subject to different firewall rule sets.  Perhaps OCSP is trying to determine the status of the certificate and failing?
Here are some things I have tested:
I switched to a different official apple brand thunderbolt to ethernet adapter with no change in behavior
I disabled wireless and disconnected my wired network.  So no network access at all.  Signatures and encryption work!  The message obviously does not send, but it appears in my outbox and I don't get the signature error.  When I reconnect my wired cable, the message sends successfully and appears as encrypted in my sent folder!
I have attempted to disable OCSP by using "Keychain Access --> Preferences --> Certificates Tab --> OCSP (OFF) and CRL (OFF)" but this hasn't made a difference in the behavior of wired networking.
Ran a TCPDUMP on traffic to the OCSP service but didn't see any traffic when I attempted to send a message and received the signature error
I am pretty stumped on this.  This is very odd behavior
Does anyone else experience this behavior?

  • Signatures and Mail

I used to be able to pick and choose various signatures from a drop down menu for each sending account. This has now gone. There is a procedure to bring signatures back under the Customiseoption but a) this only works in each message sent, and 2) the drop down does not work, even thought there are several different signatures defined.
    Any fixes found?

    Deborah,
I was having the same problem, but after a bit of playing around I think I have it sorted.
In Mail go to your Preferences. Click on the Signature Panel. There is a drop down menu located in bottom quarter of the Signature preferences window that says *Choose Signature*. I've a feeling it defaults to None so you need to set it yourself.
Select the mail account that you want a sig to appear on, and then choose the appropriate sig text.
If you have more than one sig text applied to an account you will have the option to select "At Random" or "In Sequence" also.
I think what you are experiencing is because at the moment you have None (the default) set in *Choose Signature* and therefore you are having to select a sig text each time you compose a mail.
    Hope this helps.
