Mail program freezing on me

I am unable to use my mail program. Whenever I access the software it freeze on me and I have to force quit. I tried reparing the disk both using the install apple disk and applejack. Still no luck. Any bright ideas out there?
Thanks
Luc

I am having the same problem with mail since yesterday and have spent much of yesterday and today sorting through forums to find this thread.
I, too, found that creating a new user eliminated the mail program freeze. The freeze comes and goes, perhaps lasting 30 seconds with a rhythmic hard drive sound. Force quitting mail immediately stops the rhythmic drive sound, but the freeze means you may have to wait 30-120 seconds to even get the force quit command to be able to be entered.
I had already tried removing com.apple.mail.plist without help
I did this because yesterday I had new freezing problems with Safari. Removing safari's com.apple.safari.plist eliminated the problem, but an hour later the problem had migrated to mail, and this migration really worries me.
I downloaded and ran Preferential Treatment this afternoon and it says all my preferences are OK.
I wanted to run disk utility off the DVD to check the drive (checked OK at the Apple Store a few weeks ago...problem then was a corrupted user, they did an archive and install as the computer wouldn't boot for me). Worked fine the last two weeks.
I have tried today to boot from my Tiger DVD while holding down C. It doesn't work. Also, if I just stick it in, it kicks it out. I checked the Apple help files for this. It recommended downloading superdriveFWUpdate since my PM G5 is an early model. Did this and when run it said I didn't need this. The only other advice that the site points to for problems booting from the DVD refers to 10.3.9 and before, and I'm running 10.4.9.
Do you have any other advice on how I am going to get my PM G5 to boot from the DVD to check the disk before going forward? Again, the folks at Apple Store Saddlecreek said the problem didn't appear to be disk related before, and was a bad user. unfortunately, the archive and install caused hours of work trying to set up syncing between my palm, .mac calendars on the G5, and iMac.
I started follwing the advice you'd given to Luc, to make a backup of ~/Library/Mail and the first time I did this I got a message "finder couldn't complete the operation because some data in "envelope index"couldn't be written" I took that doc and put it on the desktop, and tried again. This time I got the same message for "13052.emit"
What is your advice at this point?
Should I trash all the files in my ~library/mail folder or just some?
There's a file called LSMMap2 and one below it called LSMMap2.corrupt, in fact.
I have two email accounts, one of which has 60,000 plus emails for a newsgroup that I like to be able to go back into to do searches on previously discussed questions, but I do now have them on the other user account I set up on the computer today.
Thanks

  • TS3276 I use Mail for my email and lately, if I get an email coming in while writing one, the program freezes for a few seconds. Frustrating.

I have a 27" iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. I use Mail for my email. Just in the past 2 -3 months, if I'm writing an email while another one is coming in to the inbox, the program freezes, the spinning colour ball appears and I can't continue typing for 5 seconds or more. I get and write a lot of emails so it's frustrating.
I've also noticed that sending messages is taking longer than it used to. The program spins its wheels for a few seconds before sending. Definitely noticeably longer than prior to this situation. Any ideas anyone?

  • I get junk mail on my iPad that states "this message has no content".  If I click on it my mail freezes up and after some time my mail program works again.  I use a .mac address.  Anyone have similar issues?

I get junk mail on my iPad that states "this message has no content". If I try to delete it or click on it my .mac mail freezes up and it takes some time for my mail program to continue.  Has anyone else had this issue?  Ideas for resolution?

Yeah, I've seen it from iOS 7 to the present. It appears to be a network issue, as the Mail app is trying to grab the information to display the first few lines in the abbreviated display. I haven't had mine freeze though. When I click on it, it will simply show a blank message. Now I can quit the app and later reload the app, and "sometimes" the contents come back right away. In other instances, not right away, but eventually.
You might try quitting all the apps, then going to the Settings app to Reset and reset your Network Settings. The iPad will reboot. Try it again after that.

  • Mail program or screen freezed~~~!! Help me!

Mail has been freezed and no screen touch is working....
Someone help me to get out this problem....
No way out, if once the program would have been freezed...

    I think,
there might be some bugs are crawlling around the mail program.
It was happened when I tried to open an attached file with one of the other readers in my iPad, e.g. iBook. I'd opened the attached directly from the email, and then was trying to switch to the other reader(pdf reader).
Then, it's been frozen.... But under the frozen screen, program was working...
Looks like standing on an ice above the river stream.....brrrrrr!

  • How can I keep my iPhone 4 Mail from freezing & losing drafts?

I often send email from my iPhone (4 with iOS 5.0.1) only to find that the phone doesn't have a connection.
Often once it has a connection again, the mail program will never load -- instead freezing, the "load wheel" forever circling, "Checking for Mail..."
This is a big problem for the email I "sent" -- because without a connection it didn't save to the Outbox.
I have tried to solve it by saving my outgoing emails as drafts, but they don't save as drafts without a connection!? Why should the device require a connection to save a draft??
It's actually very similar to a problem I used to have with my iPhone 2's mail program. I searched for this topic before posting and I found other users had the previous problem too, in 2008: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1611568?start=0&tstart=0
    Help?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Programs freeze?!

So Its extremely frustrating to "upload" a file into different types of programs and the program freezes.  For example when I upload a file onto an email when I am looking for a file to upload into the email the "attachment box" freezes and I need to force quit mail. When I download a file from apple mail it freezes and I have to force quit.  But its not limited to apple mail, it also happens when I am on gmail when I try and upload/ download a file the program freezes and I have to force quit.  I also tried a different internet search engine.  I originally was using Chrome so I thought it was Chrome, so I went onto Safari and yet it did the same thing.  I have tried to trouble shoot this problem to the best of my ability, now I am lost.  is there something I need to do?  All software files are up to date.

    Try a restart.
Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear and again when you log in. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don’t do them all at once.

  • Problem with corrupted Mail program

This all started because my battery is so weak at this point that if I unplug for more than a few minutes, the system just blinks off....which is exactly what happened while the Mail program was doing something important. When I rebooted, my mail program was completely corrupted.
Now it hangs while checking mail and registers up to 24 new e-mails, but shows none of them, or simply fetches the same e-mail over and over again in each folder. Then it freezes up while the progress whirlygig thing goes around and around...even if I take a mailbox off-line it seems to do this same thing.
I disabled some of the mailboxes and found that this erased the content of all my e-mails in each folder that was disabled.
Meanwhile, it will actually send mail perfectly well.
If I remember correctly, reinstalling my system software will not fix this problem, unless there's something I don't know about. (These days there are many of those things.) Is there a preferences folder I can trash or something I can do to fix my mail program, while hopefully saving my past e-mails (I can dream, can't I?)? Suggestions are most welcome.
    Thanks so much!
    Jennifer

    Golden Shoes:
    Thanks for the quick response.
I have a POP account. Several.
Also, I don't run the computer without the AC. It was being moved from a desk to a table when it shut down suddenly before I could reattach the cable.
Would the mail preferences be located in the user folder? I tried getting rid of them and still had the same problem. I'm worried about tossing something global out when I shouldn't.
Finally, if you don't mind, snark never solved a problem. I'm sure you have nothing to prove and if you do, I don't need to know. I simply had a question since I am new to this operating system.

  • Mail app freezes upon opening after Mavericks install

Following my installation of mavericks, apple mail app freezes upon opening. Windows do not open; program immediately begins "not responding." Having followed this with a force quit loop for a day, I installed airmail, a serviceable alternative, but not well integrated with address book. As such, I'm interested in finding a fix for mail app. Advice will be greatly appreciated.

I have same problem with my macbook pro 2009
Worked fine when first installed now mail app fails to open. Not the same issue as with macbook airs.

  • Problem Mail program & Outgoing Mail Server - Problem with Earthlink

I had Earthlink POP / SMTP ( In/Out ) Mail server and mac Mail set up when I pulled the power plug on PMG4 due to freeze up !
Now have no contents in mac Mail program In/Out/Sent/Draft on the PMG4 hardrive or the external Lacie brick back-up hardrive. I am told by Earthlink this is because I had the " don't save email copy on server " box checked in the Mail/Add account/Advanced section.
Any idea how I can retieve my email folders ?
Also cannot get rid of 6 account names listed erroneously under Mail/Preferences/Account/Accounts Information/outgoing mail server ! And yet there is only one account listed when the accounts button is pushed. This is making it impossible to connect to the earthlink server ! Earthlink says everythings fine on their end and I have the correct Server Port number entered ! Earthlink says it's a problem with macMail !
    Help !

This is no longer an issue

  • Hotmail acct hacked and now Mail program won't work

It looks like my hotmail account was hacked and sent numerous spam emails to my address book. I changed my password and they seemed to have stopped, but now I cannot send/receive emails using this acct through mac mail program. I have accessed my hotmail acct thru mail for years now.
The only thing that comes up is the msg: "POP server "pop3.live.com" rejected the password for user ...
    but doesnt take the password.
Now I cant send/rec from my iPhone either -- tells me the user name or password is incorrect.
The questions: would the spam issue block my hotmail acct and freeze the mail program. If so, can it be restore and how? ANY HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED! THANKS

Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Reboot.
And maybe instead if entering pop.live3.com, try using 208.87.32.68

  • Mail is freezing a lot

Mail is freezing up very frequently, and I often have to Force Quit the program. Now I can't get into my Sent mailbox because Mail says it's "Rebuilding the table of contents . . . (12% done)" and it has been getting stuck on this exact phrase for several days. I have quit and reopened the program several times, but it keeps trying to rebuild the table of contents, and then everytime I try to get into my Sent box, it will say it is opening it, but nothing happens.
Can anyone give me advice about what's going on and what I can do to fix it?

    Jill,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
If you are using 10.3.9, rather than 10.4 (Tiger) then it would be better to post in the forum for earlier Mail programs -- see:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=740
However, whether you respond here or in a new Topic there, do you know how large your Sent mailbox might be? You can check by using the Finder, to open Home/Library/Mail/your POP folder for this account, locating the Sent Messages.mbox folder, control-clicking over it, and choosing Get Info.
To open Mail without it freezing, you should try holding down the Shift key while clicking on the Mail Icon to launch it. However, there seems to be a problem with the Sent mailbox, but this does not mean the messages are lost.
    More info, please.

Try closing the Mail app completely and see if it works properly when you re-open the app : from the home screen (i.e. not with the Mail app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Mail app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
If that doesn't work also do a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
