Mail program not sending or receiving

My Mail has stopped receiving & sending emails. (I can still access them online). The SMTP says it is offline. How do I fix this & why does it just suddenly happen?. It has happened twice before in the past year. Frustrating.

Hi,
Ports for Incoming and Outgoing should not be the same. Port 995 may be suitable for outgoing with SSL if the provider permits. For IMAP accounts Port 993 is the Incoming to match with SSL.
Port 110 is for Incoming POP3 use, but not Outgoing. You university internet service should be able to advise you better than they appear to have so far. Verizon should be able to tell you if their SMTP can be used where the ISP is not Verizon.

Mail will not send or receive. It intermittently stops working. Why?

I had problems with sending emails from one server in particular, however, I would ask if you have gone to the page of your server and found specific instructions for configuring your mail. My iMAC would not send out emails, so I went to my (Italian) server's page and solved the problem.
It was not sufficient to let the MAC wizard connect you up with your server, and, indeed, MAIL invited me to consider installing the server's email manually. So doing, my problem was solved.
Your server's page should have a list of email programs (cf Outlook, Thunderbird, etc.) , with instructions as to how to configure them. Look for the item referring to Macintosh Mail, keep it in background in order to go back to it as you configure your mail.
My problem was that I could not convince Mail to accept the out connection, but when I eliminated my server entirely in Mail's Preferences, I added that server once again: Mail told me that it could not safely transfer my password and asked me if I wanted to set up the site manually. I clicked on manual, and found very precise specifications as to the number of the port to be used, then instructions on how to find the menu for the out mail, with a particular number I had to insert in the drop-down menu they specified.
It was not as complicated as it sounds here, but requires patience.

Re: Macbook Pro 10.6.8 RAM Upgarde to 8 GB
The amount of RAM is not dependant on the operating system. It is all about the model of you Mac.
10.6.8 is the version of OS X that is installed on your system. It has no real baring on the amount of RAM that CAN be installed.
Personally I have never had good luck with Corsair RAM. I have always had good luck with Crucial and Kingston.

• Mail will not send or receive.

I am having awful problems with Mail since upgrading to mountain lion. If I choose a folder (as opposed to keeping it on Inbox for all) everything goes blank and Mail crashes. I can't go back to a draft I started either because that requires going to the Draft folder. I'm also having trouble sending and receiving email. I restart Mail at least 20 times a day because it crashes so much. I've tried suggestions mentioned on message boards, but nothing has worked. Luckily, I have an iPhone where I can view the majority of my email. But I'm at my computer all day. This is a huge inconvience. Please make a patch for this problem asap!

Thanks for your help. So far, there's been no change. The mail goes blank and crashes as soon as I click on an account. I am quite computer literate, so, yes, the accounts are online and the server settings are correct. Neither of those things would cause the program to freeze repeatedly anyway. But I appreciate the suggestions.
Hopefully all the error reports from my forced quits will catch someone's attention.

• My imac mail will not send or receive mail

My mail on my imac has a triangle with(!) in it, saying that server can't be found, I recently changed my password for my email account with bellsouth. Net. When I try to open my mail on my phone I get a message that my user id and or password is incorrect, when I change it back to old password it says outgoing server is I n correct . AT&T mail says its the computer apple says AT&T mail. I can go to AT&T mail login and open my mail, but not on the computer or iPhone 4S should I delete mail account on computer and reinstall it

Since you changed your password for your email account, have you updated that information on your iPhone 4S account? If your account settings, i.e. username/password, seem correct on all of your devices, deleting the account and reinstalling it sounds like a reasonable option.

• Mail Program not sending group email

I set up a message group months ago with 33 addresses. Worked fine. Suddenly a few weeks ago, all members of the group reported not getting the messages, but I was not getting any bounce-backs. I checked with GoDaddy where I have an Exchange service. They tested and found that the messages I was sending were being received by their server, not blocked. Yet this group is still not receiving my messages! Simultaneously, I have another message group set up with about 30 addresses. It works fine! I am mystified. Any ideas?

• My mail is not sending or receiving.

I get all accounts whirling away but on the activity pane at the bottom it states that the working rate (incoming mails) is zero. I run 10.7.5 on a 2008 iMac, 2.8 Ghz Intel Core Duo. 4GB 800 Mhz DDr2 SDRAM. My mail accounts work fine on iPad - same settings as on the imac, so I guess there are some background files that have got corrupted? Help!

You do not say who your email service provider is????
Verify your mail sever is functioning on their end.
I see now it is working on your iPad
check your Mail>preference and verify settings
Did you shut down mail and relaunch
Did you reboot?

• Mail program not working....IMAP and POP not working, Exchange does

Suddenly my Apple e-mail program, mail, does not send or receive mail. The IMAP account (iCloud) and the POP account (earthlink) do not connect. My Exchange account does. I can get to the e-mails by going directly to the provider using Safari. As far as I know, I have changed nothing.

Verify your EarthLink settings:
Earthlink Settings
http://support.earthlink.net/email/email-server-settings.php
I would retire the EarthLink account and use iCloud instead. You mentioned using Open DNS. Use Namebench to see what comes up as best options for your location. You can have more than one. It defaults to the top setting, but if it fails to connect, it trys other options listed.
Test your network connection.
Download and run: Namebench (free) http://code.google.com/p/namebench/
Once you have the fastest domain name servers, you then have to manually change your DNS settings in System Preferences/Network/
Select different browsers under the popup. I got varying results when using different browsers. Surprisingly, Firefox suggest Google Public DNS as primary, but Chrome and Safari gave me same settings.
System Preferences > Network > Select you internet service (be it Airport, Ethernet etc) then click advanced tab > Select DNS and enter the settings

To diagnose problems with Thunderbird, try the following:
*Restart the operating system in '''[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safe_mode safe mode with Networking]'''. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-including-safe-mode Windows 8], [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-7 Windows 7], [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/start-computer-safe-mode#start-computer-safe-mode=windows-vista Windows Vista], [http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/boot_failsafe.mspx?mfr=true" Windows XP], [http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564 OSX]
; If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.
