Mail progress "spinning wheel"

After installing leopard I no longer see any progress "spinning wheel" to indicate if searching has begun or is finished, like Tiger had. (There is a progress spinning wheel on SEND.) Anyone know if there's supposed to be one or how to get it back?

The whole email thing has become useless! If you don't get one error message, you get another. Then...you think you've got it sent...wait for the "zinggy" sound.....no sound, but no rejection.
Then....a few hours later - you get the rejection.
This is driving me crazy! What did they do??????
I've called the .Mac help people who have no solution. They advised me to send a form which I've done twice - TWICE!!!!!!!
There does not seem to be any resolution to this for those of us who have this issue!

my Mac mail inbox, adjacent the icloud tray has a continious grey spinning wheel, no new mail is coming in.
Also there is a grey clock adjacent Reminders/Notes/iCloud? Are they related; how to fix?

    Hi Eric,
    This is my very first post because I can usually fix things on my own, but I was freaking out a bit. I did so many things to mess up my mail, including changing an IMAP account to a POP account, applying rules that were not very smart, and when things started to go wrong, I deleted the POP account. Essentially, I pulled all my emails off the server, put them in a folder on my Mac, then deleted that folder by deleting the account. But, I appreciate your reply and potential solution. I'm always happy to learn more about my Mac, and now I know where I can look (home/user folder Library/Mail) should this happen again, so thanks for that. I was just going to leave a reply to my own post;
I panicked, but (I think) I have fixed this. I used Time machine to restore my inbox. Suffice it to say I have a much better understanding of Apple's Mail app and how careful you need to be with setting Rules. <—— (Very embarrassed face)

  • Spinning wheel not showing when sending mail

    Hello,
I recently gave my older iMac G5/2GHz to my Mom and got her all set up - I transferred all of her documents and photos from her old original iMac G3/350 to the "new" iMac G5/2GHz. The iMac G5/2GHz has a very clean and up-to-date Mac OS X 10.4.11 on it. I used the iMac G5/2GHz right up until I got my new iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo a few weeks ago.
I deleted all the prefs files and related files and folders from Mail 2.1.3 and started off with a "fresh" copy of Mail 2.1.3. I then imported all her e-mail messages, folders and addresses from her old version of Outlook Express 5.0.6. I had a few problems with the import but I got it all straightened around (she had a few mail folders named with either a colon ":" or a slash "/" in them so I got that straightened out and everything worked fine afterward).
But there's a strange problem happening with Mail 2.1.3 when she sends e-mails now. I am used to seeing the little "spinning wheel" to the right of the "Sent" mailbox when sending an e-mail to someone and the word "Sent" actually always seemed to change to "Sending" while mail was being sent but it doesn't do that anymore. The only way we can tell what's happening when sending e-mail is to open the Activity window from Mail's "Window" menu.
Has anyone else encountered this problem and is there any way you may know of to fix it so that we can see the "progress" (the "spinning wheel") of the mail being sent to the right of the "Sent" mailbox (without having to use the "Activity" window)?
All of her messages send and receive no problem but I can't, for the life of me, figure out why we can't see the progress of mail being sent out (we can see the progress spinning to the right of the Inbox when checking mail but nothing shows up when sending mail).
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Gerard

    Hi Gerard,
Yes it can, first I'd try this...
Right click on that Mail folder, choose archive, you'll get everything in the folder, and the folder itself in a file called Mail.zip, move it to a safe place, same for the Mail Downloads folder... only the plist is separate.
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
(Deleting may or may not require you to setup your account(s) again.)
Quit Mail, then In your home folder, try moving this +folder & file+ to the Desktop then reboot...
First, Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these +folder & file+ to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Reboot.

Can you log on to the email account via webmail in a web browser, view the email and delete it from there if necessary.

  • Spinning Wheel, Mail Unexpectedly Quits

I am using Mail 1.3.11 and have been for years. Just in the last week, Mail will unexpectedly quit and ask me if I want to send bug report. I can usually open one mail, then get spinning colorwheel for over a minute then get the App Mail has quit window. This happens everytime I open Mail now. I can't really check or delete any mails. I read advice on holding down shift and checking junk filter. Did all that and still quits on me. I called tech support for my internet provider and they claim it is not on their end. The spinning wheel seems to start when mail is trying to contact smtp.mail.west.cox server.
I am stumped. Is there a newer version of Mail? Should I upgrade and will it fix this problem? Like I mentioned, I have used this version for years and no problems until recent.

Thanks David for the help. The place I got the log from was in the window after Mail crashed again. When I went to Open Library/Logs/etc. the file mail.crash.log was greyed out. Anyway, here it is.
    Here is the crash log:

  • Mac boot issue; gray screen, spinning wheel, and progress bar

Recently I shut down my Mac only to find when I tried turning it back on it was very slow and unresponsive. I proceeded to shut down a couple more times and this resulted in a gray screen upon startup with a spinning wheel, apple logo, and a progress bar. The progress bar did not fill at all at first, and as I left my laptop for about 40 minutes, it still hadn't moved. I proceeded then to boot in recovery and tried to repair my disk. This resulted in another issue, and would not repair, so I decided to just erase my HD, since there was not anything important on it anyways. I really just wanted my laptop to turn on so I could start my paper. Well it wouldn't erase my hard disk and this led to me becoming very impatient and just quitting the process. On the next attempt to boot in recovery, the hard disk doesn't even show up. Only the recovery disk (previously there were two disks as options, as well as the wifi selection). I'm now using safari through the recovery option. I'd like to simply get my computer back. If i can't get anywhere on here, i'm just going to bring it to the apple store and return it, most likely, as i've had nothing but problems with this thing. I've had it since the middle of September, and I can't hardly believe i've already encountered such an issue. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

I'd make a trip to the Apple Store - your hard disk may be dying (the Recovery partition is very small) or there might be something corrupt in your system. They'll be able to evaluate it.

  • I want to delete my mac account and replace it with my gmail account. I know how to do this but when I click and open up mail I get the spinning wheel and have to force quit mail.

I want to disable my mac.com mail, I know how to delete it but I cannot get into mail to do this, whenever I click on mail, or mail in system preferences to open it I get the spinning wheel and have to force quit. I am running a Macbook 10.7.5
    Thanks,
    Edward.

You can't merge Apple IDs.  You also can't cancel (delete) and existing ID, you can only choose to stop using it.
If your old ID was compromised and you can no longer access it, you'll have to contact Apple for assistance.  Go to https://expresslane.apple.com ; click 'See all products and services' at the bottom of the page. In the next page click 'More Products and Services, then 'Apple ID'. In the next page select 'Other Apple ID Topics' then then 'Apple ID account Security’.

  • Can't get Mail to work - I get the spinning wheel and Mail freezes.  I have to Force Quit it.  How do I fix this?

Can't get Mail to work - I get the spinning wheel and Mail freezes.  I have to Force Quit Mail .  How do I fix this problem?

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Log out and log back in. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Post your results.
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • How do I get rid of the spinning wheel in Mail?

I am using OS X 10.8.4 and the dreaded spinning wheel keeps appearing everytime I try to do ANYTHING, including type a word or two in a new email or read an existing email.

As far as the previous situation, of my lost mail and folder, etc., I was told that if I didn't have a backup from before I did the upgrade to OS X 10.8.4, there was nothing more that could be done.  I left the discussion because "there was nothing that could be done."
After that, at the recommendation of one of these dedicated volunteers, I connected my external hard drive and now I guess Time Machine is doing periodic updates.
On this situation, the headache of the SBBOD is with Mail.  But...since I typed that question, yesterday, I am finding that I have a similar problem with iPhoto.  It is very slow to go from one step to another, with the appearance of the SBBOD.
The ANYTHING I was referring to was anything I try to do in Mail.  It's click on something, wait for the spinning to stop.  Type a couple of letters or words and wait for the spinning to stop.  I tried this with Safari closed and it was still a problem.
All of this started yesterday.  It wasn't a problem before that.
I did look at old posts of the same problem and tried a couple of solutions, one being move the "Mail" folder out of the Library after doing the Go, Go to folder, etc. and that didn't work.

  • Mail App not opening - spinning wheel!

    Hi,
I recently upgraded to OS10.4.4 (combo) from 10.3.9
Mail presented as a problem even then. I got some help by searching these sites. (Deleted my Plist, re-entered all account info) Got it working - though it had refused to import/transfer all my old mail.
Now it has thrown the dolly out - as if I got one over it - it refuses to open!
Spinning wheel and I have to force quit.
    Any ideas out there?
    Thanks. Steve.

    Hi Ernie,
I should clarify that I don't have both mail clients running at the same time - and that neither are set to check mail other than manually. Once in a while I just click on Thunderbird and download messages so that I have a copy to work with if Mail misbehaves!
Judging from the volume and demand on your time on this forum I don't think it a bad idea. Actually there are features in Thunderbird that are quite good! I like the ability to insert Smilies in messages from a convenient drop down button!!
I'm just a loyal Apple person and want, really really want, to use an integrated Apple suite of apps.
Now. Just how do I get those old messages (in previous POP account folders) into my current POP accounts?
Like Shirley, (another poster that you are helping so much) I think I may have pressed 'import' old settings when I updated to 10.4.4. thus creating a demand for new accounts instead of importing the older ones. Isn't that a wrong judgement of intuition by Apple? Their programming is usually more intuitive...
Thanks a lot for all your advice last evening Ernie - you're a Star!!
    Steve.

  • Mail don't stop the spinning wheel

and I can't access my mails from MobileMe, my two other accounts in Mail are working. I realized that I still can send mails from my MobileMe account but my mail application
shows the wheel, even if the mail I send is already out and received.
Strange issue. MobileMe is always receiving slower mails then the other accounts, but now......?!?!
thanks in advance for any idea.

I had the same problem pop up earlier this week.
    Menus greyed out/spinning wheel.
Apple support told me to nuke my gmail account and reinstall it.
That did not fix it. But I did lose all of the messages in my gmail
inbox. What a surprise. Apple support fails again.
Perhaps Apple could enlighten us about the bug in their software that is causing the
problem and ETA for a fix.
I found this fix on another thread:
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
then it will import you mail messages into the mailbox.

  • Spinning wheel in mail

Mail has developed the irritating habit of a permanent spinning wheel at the top of the list of e-mails on the left side of the screen and a permanent "Downloading [x] of [x]" at the bottom of that list.  Why is this happening and is there a fix.  I'm not sure if it started with the download of 6.1.3 or later.

    1. Double-click the Home button to reveal Task Bar at bottom
    2. Hold the Mail app down for a second or two until you see the minus sign
    3. Tap the minus sign to close app
    4. Re-launch the app and test
Note: If necessary close all apps in the Task Bar

Try rebooting while holding down the Command and R keys (two keys).
If you see an icon for Recovery, select it and continue.
Then select Disk Utiltiy and press Return.
Now select the hard drive and the Repair Disk.
Quit DU when that is done and restart.

  • Mac displays spinning wheel and progress bar at startup.

    Ok, here's the story:
My account password wasn't being recognized. Since I couldn't access my desktop, I tried the resetpassword command in terminal (in OS X Utilities through Command + R) but it didn't work. I restarted my Mac and it displayed a progress bar and spinning wheel. When the progress bar finished, the spinning wheel kept spinning and it wouldn't stop. Each time I boot the Mac, it does it again. I tried doing repair disk using disk utility (through OS X Utilities) but it said that it couldn't be be fixed. I even tried resetting the PRAM.
I want to know if it's possible to recover my files through OS X Utilities... i'm really frustrated because it's the second time i've lost my files.

Try to boot up into safe mode, see if that does anything for you.
