"Mail" question (right board for this?)
My emails show only the most recent part of email conversations when I know there is more correspondence. Do I have to change my default settings? I even went to "Find Out How" before posting here. Is it just me or shouldn't all email programs show the complete history of emails like Lotus Notes? I went to scroll down in "Mail" and was like "where are the other emails going back and forth?" How are we supposed to reference things in our replies from previous replies if we can't see them? Please help!! Thanks so much.
Gimp is designed to run on unix/linux systems that use a graphics system called "X11".
Apple uses its in aqua interface on OS X. The X11 app on Leo is supposed to simulate
an X11 environment to enable apps like Gimp to run.
The problem is, X11 is for the most part, has been broken on leopard mainly
because X11 in Leopard syncs up with Xorg 7.2. The developers switched from the XFree86 codebase (based on, IIRC, X11R6.8) to the X.org codebase (X11R7.2).
Although it temporary adds many painful bugs, it's based on a much more modern codebase and the result in the long term once the bugs are ironed out, will make X11 in Leopard great to use (porting will become easier, we will see a more "Mac-like" behaviour, a better window manager, and a more up-to-date code base).
Most of the X11 ills were fixed with the Apple 10.5.2 Leo update.
Gimp for Leo will work now with latest builds of Gimp and X11 for Leopard.

Thanks a Million, Jin FredaSTS allows you to lock/release/approve one set of plan data (say many records). I thought your requirement is to approve individual order documents. configuring this in STS would be unnecessarily complicated I think.
Similarly IP is to work on a set of data (say all order quantity for a region or period), not for individual orders. Building all the checks and validations that you would probably want in an order entry may not be easy to build in IP.
VC or Webdynpro can't post to a infocube. They can certainly write to a transactional ODS (which probably would be a better place to write such data).
I have limited knowledge of your requirement so can't say whether it is a problem - probably not a show-stopper. If you are entering a set of orders in one go, may be IP is appropriate, but if you are looking for an application where users may be posting individual orders at random times, IP would be a bad choice I think. -
cant find the right forum for this but as i am having problems booting my macbook pro, keep having to reser pram etc and now wont boot at all.....

a. Restore entire macpro hard drive from time machine to a time over a year ago before problems started
b. Restore more recent individual files such as logic projects individually from same time machine backup
c. install any programs manually again only couple of vsts

Thousands of "mail is not enabled for this user"
Someone is sending my domain email to thousands of non existent mail accounts. It's like they are combining every possible prefix to my domain they know of. It's been going on for weeks. The Mail service, however, is not being brought down by this at all. So I don't know what kind of attack this is or how to stop it.
Can someone help me? Below is a minute section of my System log:

------------------Two possibilities - both fall under the heading 'reconaissance by e-mail'. A spammer or hacker will try 1000's of common names, then look at which ones didn't bounce to determine which ones have accounts on your system.
They then have a comprehensive list of account names on your server, and can proceed to attempt likely passwords for each, or send endless spam to your users. Either one is a Bad Thing, doubly so if you've got any accounts that you created just to test things, and have weak passwords, but you've always counted on nobody knowing they exist.
At one point, I actually had a 'testuser' account that had 'testuser' as the password - I just hadn't remembered to delete it after I was done testing. It's very common for a system to have a couple of these hanging around. I didn't have trouble with it, but looking for and getting rid of these is critical.
Either way, the immdiate solution is to go Server Admin->Mail->Settings->Relay, and add the IP address(es) of the senders to the 'Refuse all messages from these hosts or networks' section. Mail attempts will still show up in your SMTP log, but they'll look like this one I got this morning (one of dozens):

Next is to take a look at your password policies - if you've got strong password policies (must include characters and numbers, must be 7 characters or longer, etc., you're probably OK, but if anyone has weak passwords, or god forbid, uses their userid as their password, you're pretty vulnerable.
It's also worth noting that someone with a full list of your users has a fair number of tools for improved odds of phishing, or spear-phishing, where they create finely targeted mails that say things like 'Bob Smith told me to contact you for your password', and look very real. A warning mail to your users to remind them that they need to keep passwords secret, and be cautious about mail, even if it appears to know something about them, would be good. I wouldn't specify that you've been recon'd, just a general 'New Year Security Reminder' or some such.

What was the exact error message you received? When you removed and re-installed iTunes, did you use the precise instructions in this Apple support document to walk you through the process?

Is Structured FM12 the right solution for this problem?
I've been tasked with solving a tricky problem at my office. Briefly: We've got a technical manual that needs to be printed each time we sell a piece of equipment. Currently, the manual is produced using a combination of MS Access DB and a convoluted Word doc that uses Mail Merge to pull data from the Access DB into the appropriate fields. The DB has a hundred tables or so, and some of the tables are "calculated" values - i.e. the value in the fields is calculated based on values entered in other tables within the DB. The Word doc uses some kind of "if-then-else" logic to determine which tables to use for which fields when building the doc. This whole setup is currently maintained by the engineering, sales, and marketing departments.
We currently use FM11 (unstructured) in the Technical Writing department, and my boss is asking me to figure out a way to migrate the Access/Word doc described above to a format we can use so we can take ownership of the documentation process for this particular line of equipment. I suspect the variables involved here go way beyond what we can do with conditional text and variables within FM, but I'm wondering if Structured FM (either 11 or 12) is more suited to this project, either by using some sort of conduit between FM and an SQL DB, or directly within FM using conditinal text, variables, or some other organizational function present in either FM11 or FM12.
Any guidance here would be appreciated. I'm not even sure what questions to ask at this point to get a proper shove in the right direction.I love this line: Get that SQL queries into XML directly or into CSV and transform the CSV into XML via XSLT. Reminds me of that bit in "Good Morning, Vietnam" where Robin Williams goes through the routine about the Vice President: "Well, sir, since the VP is such a VIP, shouldn't we keep his ETA on the QT? Otherwise, he might get KIA and then we'd all be on KP." And now, back to work...
I'm going to try to answer all of the questions above, in order, and add a little info where appropriate.
TW dept may or may not take over all maintenance of the doc. That's one of the recommendations I'm tasked with providing. My current thinking is, engineering should remain in charge of entering relevant tool data to the data repository, sales should provide TW with a "spec sheet" of what was sold, and TW should then use the specs to "build" the document for customer release.
Will a DB still be used? Unknown. That seems the best way to catalog and access the data, but I'm open to alternatives if there are any that make sense.
I am totally unfamiliar with structure, XML, DITA, HTML, etc. Literally 100% of my experience with FM has been in the unstructured workspace. This whole structured FM inquiry was inspired by a blurb in my "Unstructured FrameMaker 11" book (from p474: "If you need to use complex combinations of condition tags, consider setting up a workflow in the structured interface of FrameMaker. Structured documents allow you to create versions based on attributes, which are easier to use and more powerful than expressions.") A quick Google of this blurb didn't turn up much useful information, but this seems to jive with Lynne's input above re: attributes.
Data is not currently in SQL - it's in Access DB. We can migrate to SQL if necessary - that's one of the answers I'm supposed to be providing.
The reason this is all currently being done in Word is because that's what the Sales & Engineering departments understand, and currently they're responsible for these docs. I'm sure this started out as a simple, nerdy solution to a small problem - some engineer didn't want to maintain two separate Word docs when he could create a database and then use mail merge to automagically build the same thing. Since then, it's grown to hundreds of tables and thousands of possible permutations.
We already have FrameMaker installations in the department. If we can do this with FM11, great, but if not, no big deal - boss has already said he wants to move to FM12 as soon as possible. In other words, purchasing software - unless it's something additional needed to make all this work - isn't really a budgetary consideration.
As mentioned, I have no skills with using FM for any kind of structured project, but I'm willing to learn if it seems like a good solution. Just need to figure out how to proceed.

Is JavaFX the right choice for the following implementation choice I have to make? (see below for the requirement)
Requirements:
1. Provide a way to visualise within a web application an entity relationship type diagram (i.e. nodes with relationships between them). The backend database will hold the topology relationship. So to visualise this on a web application will need the ability to draw rectangles/lines/text etc.
2. Provide a way to allow the use to trigger "add a new node", or "edit info in this node". For example a right hand context sensitive menu for example.
3. Ideally will scale as the user resizes the browser window
4. Would like the main functionality of the application to remain web based (is a Ruby on Rails application in fact), but have the visualization of the diagram render within the web application as transparently as possible.
Options / Issues:
* Issues I've struck with some investigation I've done is that whilst the <canvas> tag looks good for Mozilla/Firefox etc, it does not seem to have support on InternetExplorer. Hence cross-browser compatibility seems to be a real issue for the JavaScript type solutions from what I can see. This is why I thought JavaFX may be good?
* Options therefore seem to me to be:
- javascript (e.g. <canvas> tag) => cross-platform issue
- JavaFX / Applet => (this is what I'm asking about)
- Microsoft => costs $$ for development environment etc
- AIR / Flex / Flex => ??? costs $$ again I think

REQUIREMENTS:

QUESTIONS:
As well as your recommendation re which product would suite I had some specific questions which I would appreciate clarification on:
Q1 - I assume if I have a web backend that can deliver topology inforrmation in an appropriate XML format via a HTTP REST type GET call that this could be used as a the source of data for a jGraph visualisation running within an Applet?
Q2 - If running within an Applet, can jGraph cater for a right hand menu option off the nodes/links on the graph, that I could use to trigger other calls back to the backend? (e.g. to trigger an Add New Node call)
Q3 - Following on from Q2 scenario, if I trigger an add new node scenario, if I wanted to visualise the form to type in the attributes for the new node, could this be handled within the applet by jGraph, or would this be a case of just adding your own Swing based dialogs to handle this?
Q4 - Do the basic JGraph do any basic layout without having to go up to the layout Pro package (which I think costs if using it commercially).
Q5 - If the answer to Q4 is No, how difficult would it be using the base JGraph library to do a basic layout? Is this doable/recommended? i.e. how would one "layout" the diagram if using only the base JGraph component? (noting from my requirements I'm really after a component I could send my topology information to in XML form and have it just visualise it for me)
Q6 - Running the visualiation in an Applet in a browser, is the typical usage one where all changes to topology are made as calls to backend? i.e. or is there an approach where one would allow users to make changes to the topology within the applet and build up all the changes here on the client, and then at some point synch these back to the backend? (I'm assuming the keep it simple approach would be not to do this)
Q7 - Is there a sample application/project with source code that implements a JGraph in applet/browser talking to web backend for data?
Q8 - How does JGraphPro & mXGraph fit into the picture re solving my requirements in the most cost effective manner -
Is JSP the right technology for this project?
I'm heavy into core java, but haven't used JSP before. The project manager suggested JSP for this project, but since I'm writing the spec and the code, I need to determine if it's suitable for the task before committing to it.

Is Oracle Text the right solution for this need of a specific search!

We are on Oracle 11.2.0.2 on Solaris 10. We have the need to be able to do search on data that are having diacritical marks and we should be able to do the serach ignoring this diacritical marks. That is the requirement. Now I got to hear that Oracle Text has a preference called BASIC_LEXER which can bypass the diacritical marks and so solely due to this feature I implemented Oracle Text and just for this diacritical search and no other need.
I mean I set up preference like this:

More so when I am now finding that the functionality of LIKE is not available in Oracle Text - the Oracle text search are based on tokens or words and they are different from output of the LIKE operator. So may be should I have just used a simple function like below and used that for my purpose instead of using Oracle Text:
This function (remove_dia) just removes the diacritical characters and may be for my need this is all that is needed. Can someone help to review that given my need I am better of not using Oracle Text? I need to continue using the functionality of Like operator and also need to bypass diacritical characters so the simple function that I have meets my need whereas Oracle Text causes a change in behaviour of search queries.

OrauserNIf all you need is LIKE functionality and you do not need any of the complex search capabilities of Oracle Text, then I would not use Oracle Text. I would create a function-based index on your name column that uses your function that removes the diacritical marks, so that your searches will be faster. Please see the demonstration below.

P2 Question - "Preview unsupported for this format"
Workflow: P2 is dumped onto powerbook, P2 from powerbook is then dumped to internal drives on MacPro.
The clip was then brought into the Final Cut P2 viewer to watch. It was a crash clip, so we watched it a handful of times. It was never actually imported and converted to a Quiktime.
Now (a few months later) we're going through logging everything for a project and when I went to import this folder, all the clips worked but the last 4 in a row. One of them being the crash clipped that we were watching.
The message the P2 viewer gave was "preview unsupported for this format."
The thumbnail is there, but it won't play and I get the red exclamation point upon import.
Any idea on why this is?The same thing happened to me last night. Well, not really last night. More like this morning at 1 am. Ugh.
I had three cards stored on the P2 Store. Used P2CMS to view them and verify their integrity. All the clips played fine.
I used P2 Genie to transfer them to a FW400 drive (with plenty of room).
Before formatting the P2 Store, I tried to look at the clips in the P2CMS. Several of the clips had the "red X in a box" icon superimposed. I had seen the "red ! in a box" which signifies that the clip is spanned on two cards and you only have one card in the source folder or in the P2 Store, but never the "red X."
After reading this thread, I poked around in the CONTENTS folder and found that the VIDEO folder was indeed empty on the FW400 drive. (one lesson learned is that the thumbnail that you see in P2CMS and the Log and Transfer window is just that, a thumbnail. It certainly is not the actual first frame of a clip.)
I transferred again, using P2 Genie, and this time everything was fine. Thank god.
I really don't think that I trashed the VIDEO contents by hand. I think something happened during the transfer.

I'm really new to photoshop...so some might ask why I'm trying such a complicated project...I'm asking myself the same query.
I'm an underwater videographer and I'm trying to make my own web pages. This is what I want to do...create a web page that has a series of 25 boxes of equal pixel dimensions (144 x 108), within a grid space that's 720 x 540 pixels.
In the center box I want the text "ENTER". When the text is mouse clicked, I want the action to take me to page 2. Within each of the remaining 24 boxes, I want 24 of my video clips that range in time from 4-10 sec.playing on a loop. Each clip is an MPEG4 file and has 1440 x 1080 resolution.
Thus far I've created the grid space and the 25 boxes. Each box is in its own layer. The center box has the word "ENTER" and I have it sized, colored, shaded and hilighted to my satisfaction. The background behind the TEXT is grey, the background in each box is checkerboard. I'm using the "WEB" workspace.
My questions are
1) how do I make the text react to a mouse click,
2) how do I get my clips to show up in each box.
Can you just send me to the training lessons or help text that will begin to guide me thru my maze.

Is JMF the right technology for this...
Hi All!
I have a requirement to build a client app that is subscribed to a JMS topic. Based on the published message, the client has to select and play the appropriate video clip from a total of n video clips. Here are my questions:
1) Is JMF the right technology to play video clips (.AVI format)? What are the alternatives?
2) Can I have these play in full-screen mode?
3) During idle time, can I display a default image (.JPEG)?
4) Does Swing or AWT have to also be used?
5) How can I cache the video clips (16MB * 6 clips) in memory to make it more performant? Is this even neccessary?
6) I need this application to run 24*7 with minimum failure rate. Is this a realistic expectation for JMF?

3. what is "idle time"? you mean the time where your video pauses? yes, you can..
4. doesn't matter. The visual component which you'll get from jmf (to show video) is of type java.awt.Component
5. this is not neccessary. You would reach nothing with caching video in memory. Actually, you didn't say if you are talking about sender, server or recipient side..
6. no. I generally don't trust Applets very much. I would use Macromedia Flash with FlashCom server then, although it has less features and parameters, but it seems to be more stable.

Not sure if this is the right forum for this.. disk drive icon on desktop
for msn messanger. Im a new PC to mac user (3 DAYS OLD)and yesterday tried to install msn messanger. I double clicked the install file and it made a diskdrive icon in white. When I dragged the icon to the trash (msn already installed), the trash bin turned into an eject icon. I emptied the trash (like I would on windows) and the msn icon on the dock vanished. I reinstalled it and this time there was a question mark on the msn logo. So msn now works but I have an icon which I dont need on my desktop. Does this happen with all installs?
Ok this isn't working. Im on the mac so I'll tell you exactly whats going on. I downloaded msn messanger mac version 5.1.1. The download window opens up and it downloads. I close that window. There is still a window open called "Microsoft messanger" with the icon (blue/green people). If I double click that or drag that icon to my dock bar msn opens up.
At this point I have the messanger511.dmg file sitting on my desktop. If I quit msn the icon stays in the dock. If I eject the dmg file or put it to the trash bin, when I goto open up msn from the dock there is a question mark.
This has been my whole point. It seems if I remove that .dmg file the program doesnt work.. am I missing something?
ok update... I read back a few replies about the question mark thing...I had to drag the icon to the application folder as it wasnt in there. At that point I could eject the image file and everything seems ok..however when I start msn from the dock, the white disk drive shows up in finder where the macHD and the network icons are. I can eject it and it goes away but this shows up everytime I start msn..
should I of had to do this?
