Mail - random connections
My mail keeps going off line and gives me a message that there is a problem with port 110. But then it randomly comes back and sends/receives emails. This has been happening very sporadically over the last few weeks, but today it is even worse. The Safari internet connection remains ok throughout. Could I have changed a setting without realising it? Why is it happening randomly? Linda.
Lindart,
Since this is happening on port 110, I am going to assume it is a POP3 account. Do you check this account from any other computer or device? And if so, could that be trying to access the mail account at the same time?
This article was written for iPhone, but applies to any POP3 account being accessed from more than one email program:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307009
If you are getting errors similar to those in that article, it could indicate a connection issue, or a large message that is causing your mail client to time out. If Mail reconnects before the server has timed out, the server will see that as two connections, and generate the same kind of errors.
Hope this helps,
Nathan C.

Hi
Overnight both my hotmail accounts on my Iphone 4s, through Mail, have stopped working and I cannot access my email. Every time I try I get the message "Cannot get Mail. Connection to the Server Failed"
I have rebooted my phone, deleted and readded the accoutns and even reset my network settings to factory seeting but nothing works. A few hours ago it randomly started working again but has since stopped.
Please Help!!!Contact Microsoft to see if Hotmail is having any issues.
The issue described is not an iPhone or iOS issue. -
I'm having strange random connection failures. Are there ineffieciency in my config?
I've been having strange, random connection failures and I'm trying to eliminate possible causes.
What happens is while I'm browsing on the net over wifi, a link will at random not connect to the site, but instead fault to the ISP error page. It happens with highly reliable sites like google, or ebay, or whatever. If I direct connect to the cable modem, the problem site is immediately available.
I'm sitting <6 feet from a 871W router (with antenna). There's one router in my building and others are at my neighbors.
Below is the conf file. Just to imagine how rediculious this problem is, here's a screen shot from a web page. This shows a web page I visited, and after clicking on a link (an embedded youtube video), the error showed up within the page itself.
Why would only some URLs fail to connect? Is there inefficiencies in my config?

endI removed the ip router 0 0 to no great effect, which I consider to be a win.
I'm guessing that since overload is what--I understand--translates the one outside to the many inside IPs, that the suggestion to have only one overload configured means I should combine the two ip ranges into one.
I deleted 10.0.0.0 network. Changed the bridge references to 1 and vlan references to 1. Now wifi and ethernet should all be using the same internal network? That's the idea, right? Any more fat?

Hi StuNYC,
Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you're seeing an alert message when opening Mail on your iOS devices. Do you have multiple email accounts setup on the devices? Take a look at the article below, it provides suggestions that will resolve most issues that cause an alert like that to appear in when starting the Mail app.
iOS: Troubleshooting Mail

I hope this helps.

Hi, just ran into a problem with my mail today. I've never had a problem with my POP account before. Earlier today I opened up Entourage to take a look at it ( I never use it but was just doing a little exploring). After it opened it gave me a prompt - something about changing the keychains - and I clicked OK. But immediately after this I had problems receiving mail in both Mail and Entourage. First I received this pop-up from Mail:
The POP server “oooooo” rejected the password for user “oooooo”
Please re-enter your password, or cancel.
I re-enter my password and then nothing. After several attempts of this Mail stops connecting to the server.
Anybody know what to do?
ThanksHi nipponmark.
Open /Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access, choose Keychain First Aid from the application menu, and proceed to repair the keychain. If that doesn’t work, you may try removing the password entry from the keychain and letting Mail create it again the next time it asks for it.
The fact that Mail appears to be trying to connect to the server on port 0 indicates that there could be something wrong with the network or with your network settings.
Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list. Leave checked (enabled) only the port configuration needed to connect to Internet and Built-in Ethernet (in that order if not the same), uncheck (disable) the rest of network port configurations and see whether that helps — if it doesn’t, turn ON again the ones you want enabled.
Now, from the System Preferences > Network > Show popup menu, choose the network interface used to connect to Internet, go to the Proxies section, and try disabling the SOCKS Proxy if it’s enabled.
Try using a different method to connect to Internet, if possible, or connecting the computer to Internet as directly as possible (i.e. bypassing any routers that might be present, using an ethernet cable instead of wireless, etc.), or shutting down both the computer and the router/modem used to connect to Internet, restarting, and see whether that makes a difference. -
Mail server connection problem
Mail in my macbook pro from time to time interrupts mail server connection (mac mini server). As i discoveredn turn off turn on wi fi reestablish connection. Does anybody know how to solve the problem?
Check the server log for details on the local mail server activity. These mail server logs are available via Console.app or via Server.app.
To verify local DNS services — a very common cause of problems — launch Terminal.app and issue the following harmless, diagnostic command:
sudo changeip -checkhostname
You'll need to enter an administrative password for the sudo, might then see a one-time message describing the use of sudo, then some server network configuration information if and as available, and finally an indication that there are no changes required, or that there are DNS or network or other issues.
You'll need to be referencing your local DNS server — you cannot reference your ISP DNS servers, nor any other off-LAN DNS servers here — in your clients. This either by explicit configuration in the clients, or via the DNS server settings distributed by your local DHCP server. Do not reference both local and off-LAN DNS servers, either — just your own local DNS server(s) on your local NAT'd network. No off-LAN off-NAT'd-network DNS servers can provide valid DNS translations for your local LAN, and SMTP traffic is based on properly configured DNS. -
Reading Inbox - javax.mail.MessagingException: Connect failed;
I get an error message while trying to read emails by connecting to a company mailbox. The message is as follows:
javax.mail.MessagingException: Connect failed;
nested exception is:
java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused: no further information
boolean com.sun.mail.pop3.POP3Store.protocolConnect(java.lang.String, int, java.lang.String, java.lang.String)

void javax.mail.Service.connect(java.lang.String, java.lang.String, java.lang.String)

The code is very simple and as follows:
import java.io.*;
import java.util.Properties;
import javax.mail.*;
import javax.mail.internet.*;
import javax.activation.*;
public class GetMessageExample {
public static void main (String args[]) throws Exception {
String host = "companyname.com";
String username = "user";
String password = "xxxx";
try{
// Create empty properties

// Get the store

store.connect(host, username, password);
// Get folder

folder.open(Folder.READ_ONLY);

for (int i=0, n=message.length; i<n; i++) {
System.out.println(i + ": " + message.getFrom()[0]
+ "\t" + message[i].getSubject());
// Close connection
folder.close(false);
store.close();
} catch (Exception e) {
e.printStackTrace();
I have a two part question:
1. At home I am using a dial-up connection it works when I change the settings to an email account as provided by the local ISP.
I have tried it with both "pop3" and "imap" in
Store store = session.getStore("pop3");
for the company email but it does not work.
Is this a problem with company security? Maybe firewall/proxy error? If so how do I get around it?
2. Also, when I am in the office (LAN used to connect to Internet) I cannot even get a connection to the ISP account - similar problem or different?
Any thoughts and help most appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
MarkIt could be that the mail server is not accepting connections from the machine you are on. Have you tried using Outlook Express or the Netscape email client to connect to the server/account from the machine that is getting the failure?

Javax.mail.MessagingException: Connection refused: connect on localhost
Hello,
I am using Tomcat5.0.28 for a javamail servlet program. I am giving the hostname as localhost. After entering the input details in my html file, i get the error- "javax.mail.MessagingException: Connection refused: connect; nested exception is: java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused: connect " .
can anybody help me regarding in solving error.
Thanks.First, you're using a very old version of JavaMail. Please upgrade. Some of the properties you're setting aren't supported in that old version.
Second, you don't need the socket factory properties, get rid of them.
Finally, it looks like you're trying to connect on port 143 using SSL. Port 143 is the non-SSL port. That's probably not going to work. Still, it looks like something is refusing to let you connect at all. If you really can telnet from the same machine your program is running on to the same server machine on port 143, then you probably have some sort of firewall that's preventing your program from connecting. Please post the entire debug output if it still fails after correcting the problems above. (Move the setDebug call to before the getStore call.) -
I updated to mountain lion and now mail cannot connect to my server
I updated to mountain lion and now mail cannot connect to my server. It says check your user name and password are correct. Well they are, and were. Nothing has changed except the mac OS.
Has anyone else suffered this and knows a way around it? Too annoying to log into my mail every 15mins via a web page anymore.
Efforts tried to resolve this so far:
retyped user name and password, removed account and created a new account, restarted computer, software update, searched forums. so far all have proved unsuccessful.
I have also written to my mail provider and am waiting for feed back from them, but if anyone has any advice it would be gratefully received.
Many thanks,
MikeMany users upgrading to Mountain Lion have run into this problem, myself included. You likely have corrupted settings for your "Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)" for each of the failed Accounts. Open Mail>go to Mail's Preferences>Accounts>select an Account in the left column to work on>then set up your Outgoing Mail Server which will INCLUDE resetting up your Password, as its asking you to. Click on "SMTP Outgoing Mail Server" near the bottom of the Accounts window while your mail account is highlighted in the left hand column. When you click on SMTP... you will see a drop down box icon offered at the right side of the line. Click it and then select at the bottom of the the list "Edit SMTP Mail Server". Fill in the required settings for your ISP mail account using their recommended settings.

Since I upgraded to Moutain Lion I'm dealing with wifi problems : no connection or random connection. With OS X Lion wifi was OK.
So, Darrall, it seems to be fixed. Mind you, this has happened through a seemingly unrelated, but hopefully replicable sequence of events. You be the judge.
I went to my other login account, which as it happens is also an admin account. Voila, the secondary click worked fine. So I returned to my primary account, where I did the following:
First, I unpaired the trackpad. then I remembered I needed something to move the mouse with, so I re-paired the magic mouse I'd had before. I thought I'd turned off the trackpad, but apparently not, so the computer re-paired it automatically. None of this had any immediate effect, as you'd imagine.
Then I went to Mission Control in Preferences. There, I deselected "Show dashboard as a space", and in the hotcorners, I deselected Mission Control from the bottom left, where it had been. I didn't replace it.
Now, my secondary click works. Uh huh. I was suspicious that it might have more to do with Mission Control and/or Dashboard than the trackpad, only because I'd beaten that horse till my arm hurt and this was all I could think of.
Never did I imagine this would get fixed short of creating a new login account and somehow copying everything - since I didn't know what was wrong, I could easily have copied the error too - so I'm very pleased and relieved. If you haven't fixed yours yet, try this. Let me know what happens! -

Java Mail throws Connect failed error in Oracle 11g Enterprise Edition
Hi,
I am using Oracle 11g Enterprise edition.I have a java class which is used for reading outlook 2010 inbox and download attachments from mails .For Connecting to OutLook from oracle i am using "POP3S" protocol in my java class. Any help is appreciated

I suspect root cause is with Java not Oracle.
Oracle RDBMS does NOT speak any "protocol" except SQL natively. -
